Abstract:This paper presents a power distribution network (PDN) decoupling capacitor optimization application with three primary goals: reduction of solution times for large networks, development of flexible network scoring routines, and a concentration strictly on achieving the best network performance. Example optimizations are performed using broadband models of a printed circuit board (PCB), a chip-package, on-die networks, and candidate capacitors. A novel worst-case time-domain optimization technique is presented as an alternative to the traditional frequency-domain approach. The trade-offs and criteria for scoring the computed network are presented. The output is a recommended set of capacitors which can then be applied to the product design.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of optimizing the decoupling capacitor network in the power distribution network (PDN) of high-performance digital systems to improve system performance and reliability. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following three main objectives: 1. **Reducing the solution time for large networks**: For complex PDNs, traditional optimization methods may require a long computation time. The paper proposes a new optimization method aimed at reducing the solution time, especially when dealing with large-scale networks. 2. **Developing a flexible network scoring mechanism**: Different design requirements may need different scoring criteria. The paper introduces multiple scoring methods, allowing engineers to choose the most appropriate scoring metrics based on specific design goals. 3. **Focusing on achieving optimal network performance**: Traditional optimization methods may focus on minimizing cost or quantity, whereas this paper emphasizes maximizing performance and robustness. By optimizing the decoupling capacitor network, it ensures stable voltage supply under various load conditions, avoiding transient voltage fluctuations that could affect the load equipment. To achieve these goals, the paper introduces an optimization technique based on time-domain worst-case response as an alternative to traditional frequency-domain methods. This approach can more accurately assess the actual performance of the PDN in the network and provide a clear, quantifiable scoring standard. Additionally, the paper discusses how to combine frequency-domain and time-domain analyses to obtain a more comprehensive performance characteristic evaluation.
