Abstract:In this note we provide bounds on the spectral gap for the Dirichlet sub-Laplacians on $H$-type groups. We use probabilistic techniques and in particular small deviations of the corresponding hypoelliptic Brownian motion.

Abstract: We prove the dispersive estimates and Strichartz inequalities for the solution of the Schr\"{o}dinger equation related to the full Laplacian on H-type groups, by means of Besov spaces defined by a Littlewood-Paley decomposition related to the spectral of the full Laplacian. Let $p$ be the dimension of the center on those groups and we assume that $p>1$. This requires a careful analysis due also to the non-homogeneous nature of the full Laplacian.

Abstract:We prove the spectral gap property for random walks on the product of two non-locally isomorphic analytic real or p-adic compact groups with simple Lie algebras, under the necessary condition that the marginals posses a spectral gap. Furthermore, we give additional control on the spectral gap depending on certain specific properties of the given groups and marginals; in particular, we prove some new cases of the super-approximation conjecture. One ingredient of the proof is a local Ulam stability result which is introduced and proved in this paper. This result characterizes partially defined almost homomorphisms between two analytic compact groups with simple Lie algebras.

Our approach relies on restriction type estimates where the multiplier is additionally truncated along the spectrum of the Laplacian on the center of the group.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a notion of Poincaré exponent for isometric representations of discrete groups on Hilbert spaces. Similarly as growth exponents control the geometry this exponent is shown to control the size of spectral gaps. Following similar ideas as Patterson and Sullivan it is used in the case of negatively curved groups to construct weakly contained boundary representations reflecting the spectral properties of the original representation analogously as complementary series representations in the case of semi-simple Lie groups. This is exploited to deduced sharp estimates on spectral invariants. A quantitive property (T) á la Cowling is also established proving uniform bound on the mixing rate of representations of hyperbolic groups with property (T). Along the way some properties of boundary representations are discussed. A original characterisation of the positivity of the so-called Knapp-Stein operators and certain fusion rules on the boundary complementary series representations are established.

Abstract:We prove that the restriction operator for the H-type groups is bounded from L-p to L-p' for p near to 1 when the dimension of the center is larger than one, and the range of p depends on the dimension of the center. This is different from the Heisenberg group, on which the restriction operator is not bounded from L-p to L-p' unless p = 1.
Bounds on spectral gaps of Hyperbolic spin surfaces

Abstract:We describe a method for constraining Laplacian and Dirac spectra of two dimensional compact orientable hyperbolic spin manifolds and orbifolds. The key ingredient is an infinite family of identities satisfied by the spectra. These spectral identities follow from the consistency between 1) the spectral decomposition of functions on the spin bundle into irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and 2) associativity of pointwise multiplication of functions. Applying semidefinite programming methods to our identities produces rigorous upper bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap as well as on the Dirac spectral gap conditioned on the former. In several examples, our bounds are nearly sharp; a numerical algorithm based on the Selberg trace formula shows that the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, a particular surface with signature $[1;3]$, and the Bolza surface nearly saturate the bounds at genus $0$, $1$ and $2$ respectively. Under additional assumptions on the number of harmonic spinors carried by the spin-surface, we obtain more restrictive bounds on the Laplacian spectral gap. In particular, these bounds apply to hyperelliptic surfaces. We also determine the set of Laplacian spectral gaps attained by all compact orientable two-dimensional hyperbolic spin orbifolds. We show that this set is upper bounded by $12.13798$; this bound is nearly saturated by the $[0;3,3,5]$ orbifold, whose first non-zero Laplacian eigenvalue is $\lambda^{(0)}_1\approx 12.13623$.

Abstract:We show that the cohomological Laplacian in degree 1 in the group cohomology of $\operatorname{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ is a sum of hermitian squares in the algebra $\mathbb{M}_n(\mathbb{R}G)$. We provide an estimate of the spectral gap for this Laplacian for every unitary representation.

Abstract:The purpose of this note is to investigate the concentration properties of spectral projectors on manifolds. This question has been intensively studied (by Logvinenko--Sereda, Nazarov, Jerison--Lebeau, Kovrizhkin, Egidi--Seelmann--Veseli{ć}, Burq--Moyano, among others) in connection with the uncertainty principle. We provide the first high-frequency results in a geometric setting which is neither Euclidean nor a perturbation of Euclidean. Namely, we prove the natural (and optimal) uncertainty principle for the spectral projector on the hyperbolic half-plane.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a sharp defective log-Sobolev inequality on H-type groups. Then we use such an inequality to show exponential integrability of Lipschitz functions with respect to the heat kernel measure. A defective log-Sobolev-type inequality for the Gaussian-like measure with respect to the sub-Riemannian distance is also proved on arbitrary H-type groups.

Abstract:We discuss upper and lower bounds for the size of gaps in the length spectrum of negatively curved manifolds. For manifolds with algebraic generators for the fundamental group, we establish the existence of exponential lower bounds for the gaps. On the other hand, we show that the existence of arbitrary small gaps is topologically generic: this is established both for surfaces of constant negative curvature (Theorem 3.1), and for the space of negatively curved metrics (Theorem 4.1). While arbitrary small gaps are topologically generic, it is plausible that the gaps are not too small for almost every metric. One result in this direction is presented in Section 5.

Abstract:We prove the existence of spectral gaps of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators on loop spaces over a class of Riemannian manifolds which include hyperbolic spaces. This is an alternative proof and an extension of a result in Chen-Li-Wu in J. Funct. Anal. 259 (2010), 1421-1442. Further, we study the asymptotic behavior of the spectral gap.

On the Aldous-Caputo Spectral Gap Conjecture for Hypergraphs

Abstract:In their celebrated paper (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0906.1238" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0906.1238">arXiv:0906.1238</a>), Caputo, Liggett and Richthammer proved Aldous' conjecture and showed that for an arbitrary finite graph, the spectral gap of the interchange process is equal to the spectral gap of the underlying random walk. A crucial ingredient in the proof was the Octopus Inequality - a certain inequality of operators in the group ring $\mathbb{R}[S_n]$ of the symmetric group. Here we generalize the Octopus Inequality and apply it to generalize the Caputo-Liggett-Richthammer Theorem to certain hypergraphs, proving some cases of a conjecture of Caputo.

Abstract:We provide new examples of translation actions on locally compact groups with the "local spectral gap property" introduced in \cite{BISG15}. This property has applications to strong ergodicity, the Banach-Ruziewicz problem, orbit equivalence rigidity, and equidecomposable sets. The main group of study here is the group $\text{Isom}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ of orientation-preserving isometries of the euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, for $d \geq 3$. We prove that the translation action of a countable dense subgroup $\Gamma$ on Isom$(\mathbb R^d)$ has local spectral gap, whenever the translation action of the rotation projection of $\Gamma$ on $\text{SO}(d)$ has spectral gap. Our proof relies on the amenability of $\text{Isom}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and on work of Lindenstrauss and Varjú, \cite{LV14}.

Abstract:In his seminal 1981 study D. Jerison showed the remarkable negative phenomenon that there exist, in general, no Schauder estimates near the characteristic boundary in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$. On the positive side, by adapting tools from Fourier and microlocal analysis, he developed a Schauder theory at a non-characteristic portion of the boundary, based on the non-isotropic Folland-Stein Hölder classes. On the other hand, the 1976 celebrated work of Rothschild and Stein on their lifting theorem established the central position of stratified nilpotent Lie groups (nowadays known as Carnot groups) in the analysis of Hörmander operators but, to present date, there exists no known counterpart of Jerison's results in these sub-Riemannian ambients. In this paper we fill this gap. We prove optimal $\Gamma^{k,\alpha}$ ($k\geq 2$) Schauder estimates near a $C^{k,\alpha}$ non-characteristic portion of the boundary for $\Gamma^{k-2, \alpha}$ perturbations of horizontal Laplacians in Carnot groups.
