Abstract:A new form of Hamiltonian of (1 + 1)-dimensional lattice gauge theory with fermions is proposed and the exact ground state is found. The string tension is calculated exactly. The result shows that for both massless and massive theories quarks are confined by a linear potential and no phase transition occurs when the lattice spacing goes to zero.

Abstract:Yang-Mills theories are an important building block of the standard model and in particular of quantum chromodynamics. Its correlation functions describe the behavior of its elementary particles, the gauge bosons. In quantum chromodynamics, the correlation functions of the gluons are basic ingredients for calculations of hadrons from bound state equations or properties of its phase diagram with functional methods. Correlation functions of gluons are defined only in a gauge fixed setting. The focus of many studies is the Landau gauge which has some features that alleviate calculations. I discuss recent results of correlation functions in this gauge obtained from their equations of motions. Besides the four-dimensional case also two and three dimensions are treated, since the effects of truncations, viz., the procedure to render the infinitely large system of equations finite, can be studied more directly in these cases. In four dimensions, the anomalous running of dressing functions plays a special role and it is explained how resummation is realized in the case of Dyson-Schwinger equations. Beyond the Landau gauge other gauges can provide additional insights or can alleviate the development of new methods. Some aspects or ideas are more easily accessible in alternative gauges and the results presented here for linear covariant gauges, the Coulomb gauge and the maximally Abelian gauge help to refine our understanding of Yang-Mills theories.

Abstract:We consider the problem of the explicit description of the gauge-invariant subspace of pure lattice gauge theories in the Hamiltonian formulation, where the gauge group is either a compact Lie group or a finite group. The latter case is particularly interesting for quantum simulation. A basis of states where configurations are grouped according to their holonomies is shown to have several advantages over other descriptions. Using this basis, we compute some properties of interest for some non- Abelian finite groups on small lattices, and in particular we examine the question of whether a certain ansatz introduced long ago is a good approximation for the ground state.

Abstract:At one loop, we provide an explicit formula for the ground state of the one-soliton sector in the Sine-Gordon theory. The state is given in the basis of eigenstates of the field operator, or equivalently as a Schrodinger wave functional. The formula readily generalizes to other solitons in other models and as an example we also provide the ground state of the kink in the (1+1)-dimensional $\phi^4$ double well.

Abstract:In axiomatic quantum field theory, the postulate of the uniqueness of the vacuum (a pure vacuum state) is independent of the other axioms and equivalent to the cluster decomposition property. The latter, however, implies a Coulomb or Yukawa attenuation of the interactions at growing distance, hence cannot accomodate the confining properties of the strong interaction. The solution of the Yang-Mills quantum theory given previously, uses an auxiliary field to incorporate Gauss's law, and demonstrates the existence of two separate vacua, the perturbative and the confining vacuum, therefore a mixed vacuum state, deriving confinement, as well as the related, expected properties of the strong interaction. The existence of multiple vacua is, in fact, expected by the axiomatic, algebraic quantum field theory, via the decomposition of the vacuum state to eigenspaces of the auxiliary field. The general vacuum state is a mixed quantum state and the cluster decomposition property does not hold. Because of the energy density difference between the two vacua, the physics of the strong interactions does not admit a Lagrangian description. I clarify the above remarks related to the previous solution of the Yang-Mills interaction, and conclude with some discussion, a criticism of a related mathematical problem, and some tentative comments regarding the spin-2 case.

Abstract:The density of states of Yang-Mills integrals in the supersymmetric case is characterized by power-law tails whose decay is independent of N, the rank of the gauge group. It is believed that this has no counterpart in matrix models, but we construct a matrix model that exactly exhibits this property. In addition, we show that the eigenfunctions employed to construct the matrix model are invariant under the collinear subgroup of conformal transformations, SL(2,R). We also show that the matrix model itself is invariant under a fractional linear transformation. The wave functions of the model appear in the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential and in free relativistic motion on AdS space.

Abstract:It is believed that Euclidean Yang-Mills theories behave like the massless Gaussian free field (GFF) at short distances. This makes it impossible to define the main observables for these theories - the Wilson loop observables - in dimensions greater than two, because line integrals of the GFF do not exist in such dimensions. Taking forward a proposal of Charalambous and Gross, this article shows that it is possible to define Euclidean Yang-Mills theories on the 3D unit torus as "random distributional gauge orbits", provided that they indeed behave like the GFF in a certain sense. One of the main technical tools is the existence of the Yang-Mills heat flow on the 3D torus starting from GFF-like initial data, which is established in a companion paper. A key consequence of this construction is that under the GFF assumption, one can define a notion of "regularized Wilson loop observables" for Euclidean Yang-Mills theories on the 3D unit torus.

Abstract:The effective geometry and the gravitational coupling of nonabelian gauge and scalar fields on generic NC branes in Yang-Mills matrix models is determined. Covariant field equations are derived from the basic matrix equations of motions, known as Yang-Mills algebra. Remarkably, the equations of motion for the Poisson structure and for the nonabelian gauge fields follow from a matrix Noether theorem, and are therefore protected from quantum corrections. This provides a transparent derivation and generalization of the effective action governing the SU(n) gauge fields obtained in [1], including the would-be topological term. In particular, the IKKT matrix model is capable of describing 4-dimensional NC space-times with a general effective metric. Metric deformations of flat Moyal-Weyl space are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Reducing Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Field Theory to a single point in the three dimensional space results in the Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Quantum Mechanics (SYMQM) which basically is the effective quantum mechanics of zero momentum modes of the original theory. Such a system is still quite non-trivial and usually inherits many properties of the original field theory. In this talk some beautiful features of the three-dimensional model will be reviewed and illustrated with the aid of the recent, quantitative solution. In particular the structure of the supersymmetric vacua and condensates will be discussed.

Abstract:It will be described how to uniquely fix the gauge using Coulomb gauge fixing, avoiding the problem of Gribov copies. The fundamental modular domain, which represents a one-to-one representation of the set of gauge invariant degrees of freedom, is a bounded convex subset of the trans- verse gauge fields. Boundary identifications are the only remnants of the Gribov copies, and carry all the information about the topology of the Yang-Mills configuration space. Conversely, the known topology can be shown to imply that (on a set of measure zero on the boundary) some points of the boundary coincide with the Gribov horizon. For the low-lying energies, wavefunctionals can be shown to spread out "across" certain parts of these boundaries. This is how the topology of Yang-Mills configuration space has an essential influence on the low-lying spectrum, in a situation where these non- perturbative effects are not exponentially suppressed. This write-up is a short summary, with adequate references, where details on most of the material I have presented can be found. However, not published before, is a new observation concerning Henyey's gauge copies.

Abstract:We consider two-dimensional ${\cal N} = (2, 2)$ Yang--Mills theory with gauge group SU($N$) in Euclidean signature compactified on a torus with thermal fermion boundary conditions imposed on one cycle. We perform non-perturbative lattice analyses of this theory for large $12 \leq N \leq 20$. Although no holographic dual of this theory is yet known, we conduct numerical investigations to check for features similar to the two-dimensional ${\cal N} = (8, 8)$ Yang--Mills theory, which has a well-defined gravity dual. We perform lattice field theory calculations to determine the phase diagram, observing a spatial deconfinement transition similar to the maximally supersymmetric case. However, the transition does not continue to low temperature, implying the absence of a topology-changing transition between black hole geometries in any holographic dual for this four-supercharge theory.

Abstract:We compute the effective action of the Polyakov loop in SU(2) and SU(3) Yang-Mills theory using a previously developed covariant variational approach. The formalism is extended to background gauge and it is shown how to relate the low order Green's functions to the ones in Landau gauge studied earlier. The renormalization procedure is discussed. The self-consistent effective action is derived and evaluated using the numerical solution of the gap equation. We find a clear signal for a deconfinement phase transition at finite temperatures, which is second order for SU(2) and first order for SU(3). The critical temperatures obtained are in reasonable agreement with high precision lattice data.

Abstract:The purpose is to study systems of interacting particles in the Generl Relativity context, by the principle of least action using purely classical concepts. The particles are described by a state tensor using a Clifford algebra for the kinematic part. The force fields, including gravitation, are described by connections on principle bundles. A solution has been found to account for individual particles. A more specific model based on scalar products, Dirac operator and chirality is studied in more details. Problems related to symmetries, including the Higgs mechanism, are intoduced. With a comprehensive coverage of topics it can be a useful pedagogical study.

Abstract:The harmonic sections of the Kaluza-Klein model can be seen as a variant of harmonic maps with additional gauge symmetry. Geometrically, they are realized as sections of a fiber bundle associated to a principal bundle with a connection. In this paper, we investigate geometric and analytic aspects of a model that combines the Kaluza-Klein model with the Yang-Mills action and a Dirac action for twisted spinors. In dimension two we show that weak solutions of the Euler-Lagrange system are smooth. For a sequence of approximate solutions on surfaces with uniformly bounded energies we obtain compactness modulo bubbles, namely, energy identities and the no-neck property hold.
First-order phase transitions in Yang-Mills theories and the density of state method

Abstract:When studied at finite temperature, Yang-Mills theories in $3+1$ dimensions display the presence of confinement/deconfinement phase transitions, which are known to be of first order -- the $SU(2)$ gauge theory being the exception. Theoretical as well as phenomenological considerations indicate that it is essential to establish a precise characterisation of these physical systems in proximity of such phase transitions. We present and test a new method to study the critical region of parameter space in non-Abelian quantum field theories on the lattice, based upon the Logarithmic Linear Relaxation (LLR) algorithm. We apply this method to the $SU(3)$ Yang Mills lattice gauge theory, and perform extensive calculations with one fixed choice of lattice size. We identify the critical temperature, and measure interesting physical quantities near the transition. Among them, we determine the free energy of the model in the critical region, exposing for the first time its multi-valued nature with a numerical calculation from first principles, providing this novel evidence in support of a first order phase transition. This study sets the stage for future high precision measurements, by demonstrating the potential of the method.

A String Theory for Two Dimensional Yang-Mills Theory I

Abstract:Two dimensional gauge theories with charged matter fields are useful toy models for studying gauge theory dynamics, and in particular for studying the duality of large $N$ gauge theories to perturbative string theories. A useful starting point for such studies is the pure Yang-Mills theory, which is exactly solvable. Its $1/N$ expansion was interpreted as a string theory by Gross and Taylor 30 years ago, but they did not provide a worldsheet action for this string theory, and such an action is useful for coupling it to matter fields. The chiral sector of the Yang-Mills theory can be written as a sum over holomorphic maps and has useful worldsheet descriptions, but the full theory includes more general extremal-area maps; a formal worldsheet action including all these maps in a "topological rigid string theory" was written by Hořava many years ago, but various subtleties arise when trying to use it for computations. In this paper we suggest a Polyakov-like generalization of Hořava's worldsheet action which is well-defined, and we show how it reproduces the free limit of the Yang-Mills theory, both by formal arguments and by explicitly computing its partition function in several cases. In the future we plan to generalize this string theory to the finite-coupling gauge theory, and to analyze it with boundaries, corresponding either to Wilson loops or to dynamical matter fields in the fundamental representation.
