Abstract:Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n > 2. The k-curvature, for k = 1,2,...,n, is defined as the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tenser. The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k = 1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions is known for the case k = 2, n = 4, for locally conformally flat manifolds and for the cases k > n/2. In this paper we prove the solvability of the k-Yamabe problem in the remaining cases k ≤ n/2, under the hypothesis that the problem is variational. This includes all of the cases k = 2 as well as the locally conformally flat case.

Abstract:This paper considers the k-Yamabe problem on manifolds with boundary.We investigate the problem under the assumption that the k-Yamabe equation has a variational structure instead of that the manifold is locally conformally fiat,where 2 ≤ k ＜ n/2,n is the dimension of the manifold.In particular,we show that the 2-Yamabe problem is solvable on the manifold of dimension n ＞ 4 with umbilic boundary if its Yamabe constant is smaller than that of the standard half unit sphere and the mean curvature of the boundary is nonnegative.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$. Under some assumptions, we prove that there exists a positive function $\varphi$ solution of the following Yamabe type equation \Delta \varphi+ h\varphi= \tilde h \varphi^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}} where $h\in L^p(M)$, $p>n/2$ and $\tilde h\in \mathbb R$. We give the regularity of $\varphi$ with respect to the value of $p$. Finally, we consider the results in geometry when $g$ is a singular Riemannian metric and $h=\frac{n-2}{4(n-1)}R_g$, where $R_g$ is the scalar curvature of $g$.

Abstract:Let $g$ be a complete, asymptotically flat metric on $\mathbb{R}^3$ with vanishing scalar curvature. Moreover, assume that $(\mathbb{R}^3,g)$ supports a nearly Euclidean $L^2$ Sobolev inequality. We prove that $(\mathbb{R}^3,g)$ must be close to Euclidean space with respect to the $d_p$-distance defined by Lee-Naber-Neumayer. We then discuss some consequences for the stability of the Yamabe invariant of $S^3$. More precisely, we show that if such a manifold $(\mathbb{R}^3,g)$ carries a suitably normalized, positive solution to $\Delta_g w + \lambda w^5 = 0$ then $w$ must be close, in a certain sense, to a conformal factor that transforms Euclidean space into a round sphere.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:The Yamabe Invariant of a smooth compact manifold is by definition the supremum of the scalar curvatures of unit-volume Yamabe metrics on the manifold. For an explicit infinite class of 4-manifolds, we show that this invariant is positive but strictly less than that of the 4-sphere. This is done by using spin^c Dirac operators to control the lowest eigenvalue of a perturbation of the Yamabe Laplacian. These results dovetail perfectly with those derived from the perturbed Seiberg-Witten equations, but the present method is much more elementary in spirit.

A Variational Approach to the Yamabe Problem: Conformal Transformations and Scalar Curvature on Compact Riemannian Manifolds

Abstract:We start by taking the analytical approach to discuss how the minimizer of Yamabe functional provides constant scalar curvature and its relationship with the Sobolev Space $W^{1,2}.$ Then, after demonstrating the importance of the sphere $S^n$, with stereographic projection and dilation, we show that the minimizer of Yamabe functional on standard sphere is obtained from a standard round metric $\bar{g}$ by a conformal diffeomorphism, thus giving us the constraint $\lambda (M) < \lambda(S^n),$ which leads us to the final theorem that the Yamabe problem is solvable when $\lambda(M) < \lambda(S^n).$ For the proof of this theorem, we adopt the approach of Concentration-Compactness.

Abstract:We show that the S^1-equivariant Yamabe invariant of the 3-sphere, endowed with the Hopf action, is equal to the (non-equivariant) Yamabe invariant of the 3-sphere. More generally, we establish a topological upper bound for the S^1-equivariant Yamabe invariant of any closed oriented 3-manifold endowed with an S^1-action. Furthermore, we prove a convergence result for the equivariant Yamabe constants of an accumulating sequence of subgroups of a compact Lie group acting on a closed manifold.

Abstract:By constructing normal coordinates on a quaternionic contact manifold M, we can osculate the quaternionic contact structure at each point by the standard quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group. By using this property, we can do harmonic analysis on general quaternionic contact manifolds, and solve the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on M if its Yamabe invariant satisfies λ(M) < λ(ℍ n ).

Abstract:A contact Riemannian manifold, whose complex structure is not necessarily integrable, is the generalization of the notion of a pseudohermitian manifold in CR geometry. The Tanaka–Webster–Tanno connection plays the role of the Tanaka–Webster connection for a pseudohermitian manifold. Conformal transformations and the Yamabe problem are also defined naturally in this setting. By using special frames and normal coordinates on a contact Riemannian manifold, we prove that if the complex structure is not integrable, the Yamabe invariant on a contact Riemannian manifold is always less than the Yamabe invariant of the Heisenberg group. So the Yamabe problem on a contact Riemannian manifold is always solvable.

Abstract:Braverman and Kazhdan proposed a conjecture, later refined by Ngô and broadened to the framework of spherical varieties by Sakellaridis, that asserts that affine spherical varieties admit Schwartz spaces, Fourier transforms, and Poisson summation formulae. The first author in joint work with B.~Liu and later the first two authors proved these conjectures for certain spherical varieties $Y$ built out of triples of quadratic spaces. However, in these works the Fourier transform was only proven to exist. In the present paper we give, for the first time, an explicit formula for the Fourier transform on $Y.$ We also prove that it is unitary in the nonarchimedean case. As preparation for this result, we give explicit formulae for Fourier transforms on Braverman-Kazhdan spaces attached to maximal parabolic subgroups of split, simple, simply connected groups. These Fourier transforms are of independent interest, for example, from the point of view of analytic number theory.

Abstract:We show that the kernel of the Rumin Laplacian agrees with that of the Hodge-de Rham Laplacian on compact Sasakian manifolds. As a corollary, we obtain another proof of primitiveness of harmonic forms. Moreover, the space of harmonic forms coincides with the sub-Riemann limit of Hodge-de Rham Laplacian when its limit converges. Finally, we express the analytic torsion function associated with the Rumin complex in terms of the Reeb vector field.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed spin manifold of dimension $m\geq6$ equipped with a Riemannian metric $\ig$ and a spin structure $\sa$. Let $\lm_1^+(\tilde\ig)$ be the smallest positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator $D_{\tilde\ig}$ on $M$ with respect to a metric $\tilde\ig$ conformal to $\ig$. The Bär-Hijazi-Lott invariant is defined by $\lm_{min}^+(M,\ig,\sa)=\inf_{\tilde\ig\in[\ig]}\lm_1^+(\tilde\ig)\Vol(M,\tilde\ig)^\frac{1}{m}$. In this paper, we show that \[ \lm_{min}^+(M,\ig,\sa)<\lm_{min}^+(S^m,\ig_{S^m},\sa_{S^m})=\frac m2\Vol(S^m,\ig_{S^m})^{\frac1m} \] provided that $\ig$ is not locally conformally flat. This estimate is a spinorial analogue to an estimate by T. Aubin, solving the Yamabe problem in this setting.

Abstract:We consider on a closed Riemannian spin manifold $(M^n,g,\sigma)$ the spinorial Yamabe type equation $D_g\varphi=\lambda|\varphi|^{\frac{2}{n-1}}\varphi$, where $\varphi$ is a spinor field and $\lambda$ is a positive constant. For a normalized solution $\varphi$ of this equation we find a positive lower bound for $\lambda^2$. As an application we obtain an explicit lower bound of the Bär-Hijazi-Lott invariant for some spin manifolds with positive scalar curvature.

Abstract:We provide optimal pinching results on closed Einstein manifolds with positive Yamabe invariant in any dimension, extending the optimal bound for the scalar curvature due to Gursky and LeBrun in dimension four. We also improve the known bounds of the Yamabe invariant \emph{via} the $L^{\frac{n}{2}}$-norm of the Weyl tensor for low-dimensional Einstein manifolds. Finally, we discuss some advances on an algebraic inequality involving the Weyl tensor for dimensions $5$ and $6$.

On the scalar curvature rigidity for mainifolds with non-positive Yamabe invariant

Abstract:In this paper, we study scalar curvature rigidity of non-smooth metrics on smooth manifolds with non-positive Yamabe invariant. We prove that if the scalar curvature is not less than the Yamabe invariant in distributional sense, then the manifold must be isometric to an Einstein manifold. This result extends Theorem 1.4 in Jiang, Sheng and the first author (Sci. China Math. 66 (2023) no. 6, 1141-1160), from a special case where the manifolds have zero Yamabe invariant to general cases where the manifolds have non-positive Yamabe invariant. This result depends highly on an analysis and estimates of geometric evolution equations.
