Abstract:Suppose $F$ is a field with valuation $v$ and valuation ring $O_{v}$, $E$ is a finite field extension and $w$ is a quasi-valuation on $E$ extending $v$. We study quasi-valuations on $E$ that extend $v$; in particular, their corresponding rings and their prime spectrums. We prove that these ring extensions satisfy INC (incomparability), LO (lying over), and GD (going down) over $O_{v}$; in particular, they have the same Krull Dimension. We also prove that every such quasi-valuation is dominated by some valuation extending $v$. Under the assumption that the value monoid of the quasi-valuation is a group we prove that these ring extensions satisfy GU (going up) over $O_{v}$, and a bound on the size of the prime spectrum is given. In addition, a 1:1 correspondence is obtained between exponential quasi-valuations and integrally closed quasi-valuation rings. Given $R$, an algebra over $O_{v}$, we construct a quasi-valuation on $R$; we also construct a quasi-valuation on $R \otimes_{O_{v}} F$ which helps us prove our main Theorem. The main Theorem states that if $R \subseteq E$ satisfies $R \cap F=O_{v}$ and $E$ is the field of fractions of $R$, then $R$ and $v$ induce a quasi-valuation $w$ on $E$ such that $R=O_{w}$ and $w$ extends $v$; thus $R$ satisfies the properties of a quasi-valuation ring.

Upper Ramification Groups for Arbitrary Valuation Rings

Abstract:T. Saito established a ramification theory for ring extensions locally of complete intersection. We show that for a Henselian valuation ring $A$ with field of fractions $K$ and for a finite Galois extension $L$ of $K$, the integral closure $B$ of $A$ in $L$ is a filtered union of subrings of $B$ which are of complete intersection over $A$. By this, we can obtain a ramification theory of Henselian valuation rings as the limit of the ramification theory of Saito. Our theory generalizes the ramification theory of complete discrete valuation rings of Abbes-Saito. We study "defect extensions" which are not treated in these previous works.

Abstract:Given a generically finite local extension of valuation rings $V \subset W$, the question of whether $W$ is the localization of a finitely generated $V$-algebra is significant for approaches to the problem of local uniformization of valuations using ramification theory. Hagen Knaf proposed a characterization of when $W$ is essentially of finite type over $V$ in terms of classical invariants of the extension of associated valuations. Knaf's conjecture has been verified in important special cases by Cutkosky and Novacoski using local uniformization of Abhyankar valuations and resolution of singularities of excellent surfaces in arbitrary characteristic, and by Cutkosky for valuation rings of function fields of characteristic $0$ using embedded resolution of singularities. In this paper we prove Knaf's conjecture in full generality.

Abstract:Suppose that $(K,v_0)$ is a valued field, $f(x)\in K[x]$ is a monic and irreducible polynomial and $(L,v)$ is an extension of valued fields, where $L=K[x]/(f(x))$. Let $A$ be a local domain with quotient field $K$ dominated by the valuation ring of $v_0$ and such that $f(x)$ is in $A[x]$. The study of these extensions is a classical subject. This paper is devoted to the problem of describing the structure of the associated graded ring ${\rm gr}_v A[x]/(f(x))$ of $A[x]/(f(x))$ for the filtration defined by $v$ as an extension of the associated graded ring of $A$ for the filtration defined by $v_0$. We give a complete simple description of this algebra when there is unique extension of $v_0$ to $L$ and the residue characteristic of $A$ does not divide the degree of $f$. To do this, we show that the sequence of key polynomials constructed by MacLane's algorithm can be taken to lie inside $A[x]$. This result was proven using a different method in the more restrictive case that the residue fields of $A$ and of the valuation ring of $v$ are equal and algebraically closed in a recent paper by Cutkosky, Mourtada and Teissier.

Abstract:We study Abhyankar valuations of excellent equicharacteristic local domains with an algebraically closed residue field. For zero dimensional valuations we prove that whenever the ring is complete and the semigroup of values taken by the valuation is finitely generated (which implies that the valuation is Abhyankar) the valuation can be uniformized in an embedded way by a birational map which is monomial with respect to a suitable system of generators of the maximal ideal. We prove that conversely if a valuation is Abhyankar after a birational modification and localization at the point picked by the valuation one obtains a ring whose semigroup of values is finitely generated. Combining the two results and using the good behavior of Abhyankar valuations with respect to composition and completion gives local uniformization for all Abhyankar valuations of excellent equicharacteristic local domains with an algebraically closed residue field. Some general results on Abhyankar valuations are by-products of the method of proof.

Abstract:The behavior of the Frobenius map is investigated for valuation rings of prime characteristic. We show that valuation rings are always F-pure. We introduce a generalization of the notion of strong F-regularity, which we call F-pure regularity, and show that a valuation ring is F-pure regular if and only if it is Noetherian. For valuations on function fields, we show that the Frobenius map is finite if and only if the valuation is divisorial; in this case the valuation ring is Frobenius split. For Noetherian valuation rings in function fields, we show that the valuation ring is Frobenius split if and only if Frobenius is finite, or equivalently, if and only if the valuation ring is excellent.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be an integral domain and [math] be a nonempty (either finite or infinite) set of indeterminates over [math]. There are three types of power series rings in the set [math] over [math], denoted by [math], [math], respectively. In general, [math] and the two containments can be strict. In this paper, we show that if [math] is a rank one valuation domain with valuation [math], then [math] defined by [math] is a valuation on [math]. Moreover, [math] is a prime ideal of [math] and [math] is the valuation domain associated with [math]. We also show that, for [math], if [math] is a valuation domain, then both [math] and [math] are DVRs. Our results generalize those by Arnold and Brewer in which [math] has a single indeterminate. In proving the results, we show that for each [math], [math] is completely integrally closed if and only if [math] is completely integrally closed.

Abstract:Local fields, and fields complete with respect to a discrete valuation, are essential objects in commutative algebra, with applications to number theory and algebraic geometry. We formalize in Lean the basic theory of discretely valued fields. In particular, we prove that the unit ball with respect to a discrete valuation on a field is a discrete valuation ring and, conversely, that the adic valuation on the field of fractions of a discrete valuation ring is discrete. We define finite extensions of valuations and of discrete valuation rings, and prove some global-to-local results. Building on this general theory, we formalize the abstract definition and some fundamental properties of local fields. As an application, we show that finite extensions of the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers and of the field $\mathbb{F}_p(\!(X)\!)$ of Laurent series over $\mathbb{F}_p$ are local fields.

Abstract:Let (R,m) be a regular local ring of dimension at least 2. For each valuation domain birationally dominating R, there is an associated sequence {Rn} of local quadratic transforms of R. We consider the case where this sequence {Rn}n≥0 is infinite and examine properties of the integrally closed local domain S=⋃n≥0Rn in the case where S is not a valuation domain. For this sequence, there is an associated boundary valuation ring V=⋃n≥0⋂i≥nVi, where Vi is the order valuation ring of Ri. There exists a unique minimal proper Noetherian overring T of S. T is the regular Noetherian UFD obtained by localizing outside the maximal ideal of S and S=V∩T. In the present paper, we define functions w and e, where w is the asymptotic limit of the order valuations and e is the limit of the orders of transforms of principal ideals. We describe V explicitly in terms of w and e and prove that V is either rank 1 or rank 2. We define an invariant τ associated to S that is either a positive real number or +∞. If τ is finite, then S is archimedean and T is not local. In this case, the function w defines the rank 1 valuation overring W of V and W dominates S. The rational dependence of τ over w(T×) determines whether S is completely integrally closed and whether V has rank 1. We give examples where S is completely integrally closed. If τ is infinite, then S is non-archimedean and T is local. In this case, the function e defines the rank 1 valuation overring E of V. The valuation ring E is a DVR and E dominates T, and in certain cases we prove that E is the order valuation ring of T.

Abstract:Suppose $F$ is a field with valuation $v$ and valuation domain $O_{v}$, and $R$ is an $O_{v}-$algebra. We prove that $R$ satisfies SGB (strong going between) over $O_{v}$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $R$ to satisfy LO (lying over) over $O_{v}$. Using the filter \qv constructed in [Sa1], we show that if $R$ is torsion-free over $O_{v}$ then $R$ satisfies GD (going down) over $O_{v}$. In particular, if $R$ is torsion-free and $(R^{\times} \cap O_{v}) \subseteq O_{v}^{\times}$, then for any chain in $\text{Spec}(O_v)$ there exists a chain in $\text{Spec}(R)$ covering it. Assuming $R$ is torsion-free over $O_{v}$ and $[R \otimes_{O_{v}}F:F]< \infty$, we prove that $R$ satisfies INC (incomparabilty) over $O_{v}$. Assuming in addition that $(R^{\times} \cap O_{v}) \subseteq O_{v}^{\times}$, we deduce that $R$ and $O_{v}$ have the same Krull dimension and a bound on the size of the prime spectrum of $R$ is given. Under certain assumptions on $R$ and a \qv defined on it, we prove that the \qv ring satisfies GU (going up) over $O_{v}$. Combining these five properties together, we deduce that any maximal chain of prime ideals of the \qv ring is lying over $\text{Spec}(O_{v})$, in a one-to-one correspondence.

The valuation pairing on an upper cluster algebra

Abstract:It is known that many (upper) cluster algebras are not unique factorization domains. We exhibit the local factorization properties with respect to any given seed $t$: any non-zero element in a full rank upper cluster algebra can be uniquely written as the product of a cluster monomial in $t$ and another element not divisible by the cluster variables in $t$. Our approach is based on introducing the valuation pairing on an upper cluster algebra: it counts the maximal multiplicity of a cluster variable among the factorizations of any given element. We apply the valuation pairing to obtain many results concerning factoriality, $d$-vectors, $F$-polynomials and the combinatorics of cluster Poisson variables. In particular, we obtain that full rank and primitive upper cluster algebras are factorial; an explanation of $d$-vectors using valuation pairing; a cluster monomial in non-initial cluster variables is determined by its $F$-polynomial; the $F$-polynomials of non-initial cluster variables are irreducible; and the cluster Poisson variables parametrize the exchange pairs of the corresponding upper cluster algebra.

Abstract:Suppose $F$ is a field with a nontrivial valuation $v$ and valuation ring $O_{v}$, $E$ is a finite field extension and $w$ is a quasi-valuation on $E$ extending $v$. We study the topology induced by $w$. We prove that the quasi-valuation ring determines the topology, independent of the choice of its quasi-valuation. Moreover, we prove the weak approximation theorem for quasi-valuations.

Abstract:We study the question of $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{ring}}$-definability of non-trivial henselian valuation rings. Building on previous work of Jahnke and Koenigsmann, we provide a characterization of henselian fields that admit a non-trivial definable henselian valuation. In particular, we treat cases where the canonical henselian valuation has positive residue characteristic, using techniques from the model theory and algebra of tame fields.

Abstract:We study algebraic discrete valuations dominating normal local domains of dimension two. We construct a family of examples to show that the Hilbert–Samuel function of the associated graded ring of the valuation can fail to be asymptotically of the form: quasi-polynomial plus a bounded function. We also show that the associated multiplicity can be irrational, or even transcendental.

Abstract:In the present paper, it is proved that any complete local domain of mixed characteristic has a weakly almost Cohen-Macaulay algebra in the sense that some system of parameters is a weakly almost regular sequence, which is a notion defined via a valuation. The central idea of this result originates from the main statement obtained by Heitmann to prove the Monomial Conjecture in dimension 3. In fact, A weakly almost Cohen-Macaulay algebra is constructed over the absolute integral closure of a complete local domain by applying the methods of Fontaine rings and Witt vectors. A connection of the main theorem with the Monomial Conjecture is also discussed.

Abstract:Let $F$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic and let $R$ be a finitely generated $F$-algebra with a filtration with the property that the associated graded ring of $R$ is an integral domain of Krull dimension two. We show that under these conditions $R$ satisfies a polynomial identity, answering a question of Etingof in the affirmative in a special case.

On the integrality of étale extensions of polynomial rings

Abstract:Motivated by a valuation theorem, recently obtained by Rangachev, we study the étale extensions $A\subset B$ of polynomial rings over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, such that the integral closure $\overline{A}$ is a primary $\overline{A}$-submodule of $B$. We prove that in this case $\overline{A}$ has infinite cyclic divisor class group, where the generator is a prime divisor equal to the complement of $\textrm{Spec}(B)$ in $\textrm{Spec}(\overline{A})$. Moreover, this prime divisor coincides with the ramification divisor of the finite extension $A\subset \overline{A}$. In this situation we carry out Wright's geometric approach for two-dimensional non-integral étale extensions. It follows from the work of Miyanishi that $\textrm{Spec}(\overline{A})$ is a smooth affine surface. We show that $\textrm{Spec}(\overline{A})$ is an $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-bundle over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$, more precisely a Danilov-Gizatullin surface of index three. Based on Wright's analysis of which of these affine surfaces can factorize an étale morphism of the complex affine plane and his description of its affine coordinate rings, we prove that under the strong assumption that $\overline{A}$ is always a primary $\overline{A}$-submodule of $B$, any two-dimensional complex étale extension is integral.

Uniform existential definitions of valuations in function fields in one variable

Abstract:We study function fields of curves over a base field $K$ which is either a global field or a large field having a separable field extension of degree divisible by $4$. We show that, for any such function field, Hilbert's 10th Problem has a negative answer, the valuation rings containing $K$ are uniformly existentially definable, and finitely generated integrally closed $K$-subalgebras are definable by a universal-existential formula. In order to obtain these results, we develop further the usage of local-global principles for quadratic forms in function fields to definability of certain subrings. We include a first systematic presentation of this general method, without restriction on the characteristic.
