Abstract:This is a brief review of the experimental and theoretical quantum computing. The hopes for eventually building a useful quantum computer rely entirely on the so-called "threshold theorem". In turn, this theorem is based on a number of assumptions, treated as axioms, i.e. as being satisfied exactly. Since in reality this is not possible, the prospects of scalable quantum computing will remain uncertain until the required precision, with which these assumptions should be approached, is established. Abstract:Quantum computing is a growing field with significant potential applications. Learning how to code quantum programs means understanding how qubits work and learning to use quantum gates. This is analogous to creating classical algorithms using logic gates and bits. Even after learning all concepts, it is difficult to create new algorithms, which hinders the acceptance of quantum programming by most developers. This article outlines the need for higher-level abstractions and proposes some of them in a developer-friendly programming language called Rhyme. The new quantum types are extensions of classical types, including bits, integers, floats, characters, arrays, and strings. We show how to use such types with code snippets.

Abstract:Ever since the discussions about a possible quantum computer arised, quantum simulations have been at the forefront of possible utilities and the task of quantum simulations is one that promises quantum advantage. In recent years, simulations of large molecules through VQE or dynamics of many-body spin Hamiltonians may be possible, and even able to achieve useful results with the use of error mitigation techniques. Simulating smaller models is also important, and currently, in the NISQ (Noisy intermediate-scale quantum) era, it is easier and less prone to errors. This current study encompasses the theoretical background and the hardware aware circuit implementation of a quantum tunneling simulation. Specifically, this study presents the theoretical background needed for such implementation and highlights the main steps of development. Building on classic approaches of quantum tunneling simulations, this study improves the result of such simulations by employing error mitigation techniques (ZNE and REM) and uses them in conjunction with multiprogramming of the quantum chip for solving the hardware under-utilization problem that arises in such contexts. Moreover, we highlight the need for hardware-aware circuit implementations and discuss these considerations in detail to give an end-to-end workflow overview of quantum simulations.

Abstract:This thesis consists of two parts. The first part is about how quantum theory can be recovered from first principles, while the second part is about the application of diagrammatic reasoning, specifically the ZX-calculus, to practical problems in quantum computing. The main results of the first part include a reconstruction of quantum theory from principles related to properties of sequential measurement and a reconstruction based on properties of pure maps and the mathematics of effectus theory. It also includes a detailed study of JBW-algebras, a type of infinite-dimensional Jordan algebra motivated by von Neumann algebras. In the second part we find a new model for measurement-based quantum computing, study how measurement patterns in the one-way model can be simplified and find a new algorithm for extracting a unitary circuit from such patterns. We use these results to develop a circuit optimisation strategy that leads to a new normal form for Clifford circuits and reductions in the T-count of Clifford+T circuits.

Abstract:Quantum computing is a game-changing technology for global academia, research centers and industries including computational science, mathematics, finance, pharmaceutical, materials science, chemistry and cryptography. Although it has seen a major boost in the last decade, we are still a long way from reaching the maturity of a full-fledged quantum computer. That said, we will be in the noisy-intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) era for a long time, working on dozens or even thousands of qubits quantum computing systems. An outstanding challenge, then, is to come up with an application that can reliably carry out a nontrivial task of interest on the near-term quantum devices with non-negligible quantum noise. To address this challenge, several near-term quantum computing techniques, including variational quantum algorithms, error mitigation, quantum circuit compilation and benchmarking protocols, have been proposed to characterize and mitigate errors, and to implement algorithms with a certain resistance to noise, so as to enhance the capabilities of near-term quantum devices and explore the boundaries of their ability to realize useful applications. Besides, the development of near-term quantum devices is inseparable from the efficient classical simulation, which plays a vital role in quantum algorithm design and verification, error-tolerant verification and other applications. This review will provide a thorough introduction of these near-term quantum computing techniques, report on their progress, and finally discuss the future prospect of these techniques, which we hope will motivate researchers to undertake additional studies in this field.

Abstract:Basic concepts of quantum theory of information, principles of quantum calculations and the possibility of creation on this basis unique on calculation power and functioning principle device, named quantum computer, are briefly reviewed. The main blocks of quantum logic, schemes of implementation of quantum calculations, as well as some known today effective quantum algorithms, called to realize advantages of quantum calculations upon classical, are concerned. Among them special place is taken by Shor's algorithm of number factorization, Grover's algorithm of unsorted database search and, finally, the most promising in application methods of quantum phenomena simulation, particularly quantum chaos. The most perspective methods of experimental realization of quantum computer, namely nuclear-magnetic resonance and trapped ions realizations, are discussed. Phenomena of decoherence, its influence on quantum computer stability and methods of quantum error correction are described.

It is an article that will bridge the vast gap between classical and quantum computation and open an entering wedge through which one will be able to both bring himself up to speed on quantum computation and, intrinsically, in a straightforward manner, become acquainted with it. We are indeed in luck to be living in an age where computing is being reinvented, and not only seeing history in the making firsthand but, in fact, having the opportunity to be the ones who are reinventing--and that is quite a thought.

Abstract:Quantum programming languages provide necessary constructs to program quantum computers. To write such programs, one needs to understand the characteristics of quantum computers such as superposition and entanglement, which are novel as compared to programming with classical computers. Understanding these characteristics requires an understanding of quantum physics. Thus, there is a need to build high-level modeling abstractions of quantum programs for software engineers who are used to program on classical computers to understand and model quantum programs at a high-level of abstraction and independent of quantum platforms. To this end, we present some ideas for developing such quantum software modeling languages, by presenting a conceptual model of quantum programs and an example of modeling the state-based behavior of quantum entanglement program. Moreover, we present some open issues in the area of modeling quantum programs.

Abstract:The point of building a quantum computer is that it allows to model living things with predictive power and gives the opportunity to control life. Its scaling means not just the improvement of the instrument part, but also, mainly, mathematical and software tools, and our understanding of the QC problem. The first principle of quantum modeling is the reduction of reality to finite-dimensional models similar to QED in optical cavities. The second principle is a strict limitation of the so-called Feynman principle, the number of qubits in the standard formulation of the QC. This means treating decoherence exclusively as a limitation of the memory of a classical modeling computer, and introducing corresponding progressive restrictions on the working area of the Hilbert space of quantum states as the model expands. The third principle is similarity in processes of different nature. The quantum nature of reality is manifested in this principle; its nature is quantum nonlocality, which is the main property that ensures the prospects of quantum physical devices and their radical advantage over classical ones.

Abstract:We explore finite-field frameworks for quantum theory and quantum computation. The simplest theory, defined over unrestricted finite fields, is unnaturally strong. A second framework employs only finite fields with no solution to x^2+1=0, and thus permits an elegant complex representation of the extended field by adjoining i=\sqrt{-1}. Quantum theories over these fields recover much of the structure of conventional quantum theory except for the condition that vanishing inner products arise only from null states; unnaturally strong computational power may still occur. Finally, we are led to consider one more framework, with further restrictions on the finite fields, that recovers a local transitive order and a locally-consistent notion of inner product with a new notion of cardinal probability. In this framework, conventional quantum mechanics and quantum computation emerge locally (though not globally) as the size of the underlying field increases. Interestingly, the framework allows one to choose separate finite fields for system description and for measurement: the size of the first field quantifies the resources needed to describe the system and the size of the second quantifies the resources used by the observer. This resource-based perspective potentially provides insights into quantitative measures for actual computational power, the complexity of quantum system definition and evolution, and the independent question of the cost of the measurement process.

Quantum abstract machines without circuits: the need for higher algorithmic expressiveness

Abstract:Existing abstract models of quantum computation make reference to circuit elements, much in contrast to their classical counterparts. Circuits, as a model of computation, substantially limit algorithmic expression and obscure high-level connections between problems and quantum resources. It is argued here that new models are needed to achieve high-level algorithmic expressiveness that allow composable procedural abstractions to manifest, leading to the development of instructions in the sense usually understood in high-level programming languages. Doing so appears essential to the discovery of new quantum algorithms, and deeper understanding of how quantum resources compose into useful patterns, or \emph{quantum motifs}. To achieve this, stronger investment in the intersection between higher-algebra, mathematical physics and quantum science is required to cope with future challenges brought forth by \textit{very large quantum scale integration}.

The Quantum-Extended Church-Turing Thesis in Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:The quantum-Extended Church-Turing thesis has been explored in many physical theories including general relativity but lacks exploration in quantum field theories such as quantum electrodynamics. Through construction of a computational model whose gate set mimics the interactions of QED, we demonstrate that one of the defining features of quantum field theory, particle creation and annihilation, is not likely to violate the quantum-Extended Church-Turing thesis. Through this computational model, it is shown that particle creation is likely only another form of quantum parallelism. However, whether or not the quantum-Extended Church-Turing thesis will hold for all computational devices in quantum field theories is still not known. For example, we briefly examine certain interactions in quantum electrodynamics which may create multi-qubit gates. These gates may have exponential complexity at the cost of being exponentially weak. This may in turn allow for computational advantage over traditional gate sets such as Clifford+T.

Abstract:Quantum computing is a fascinating interdisciplinary research field that promises to revolutionize computing by efficiently solving previously intractable problems. Recent years have seen tremendous progress on both the experimental realization of quantum computing devices as well as the development and implementation of quantum algorithms. Yet, realizing computational advantages of quantum computers in practice remains a widely open problem due to numerous fundamental challenges. Interestingly, many of these challenges are connected to performance, robustness, scalability, optimization, or feedback, all of which are central concepts in control theory. This paper provides a tutorial introduction to quantum computing from the perspective of control theory. We introduce the mathematical framework of quantum algorithms ranging from basic elements including quantum bits and quantum gates to more advanced concepts such as variational quantum algorithms and quantum errors. The tutorial only requires basic knowledge of linear algebra and, in particular, no prior exposure to quantum physics. Our main goal is to equip readers with the mathematical basics required to understand and possibly solve (control-related) problems in quantum computing. In particular, beyond the tutorial introduction, we provide a list of research challenges in the field of quantum computing and discuss their connections to control.

Abstract:Quantum computers take advantage of interfering quantum alternatives in order to handle problems that might be too time consuming with algorithms based on classical logic. Developing quantum computers requires new ways of thinking beyond those in the familiar classical world. To help in this thinking, we give a description of the foundational ideas that hold in all of our successful physical models, including quantum theory. Our emphasis will be on the proper interpretation of our theories, and not just their statements. Our tact will be to build on the concept of information, which lies central to the operation of not just computers, but the Universe. For application to quantum computing, the essence of quantum theory is given, together with special precautions and limitations.

Abstract:Formalizations of quantum information theory in category theory and type theory, for the design of verifiable quantum programming languages, need to express its two fundamental characteristics: (1) parameterized linearity and (2) metricity. The first is naturally addressed by dependent-linearly typed languages such as Proto-Quipper or, following our recent observations: Linear Homotopy Type Theory (LHoTT). The second point has received much attention (only) in the form of semantics in "dagger-categories", where operator adjoints are axiomatized but their specification to Hermitian adjoints still needs to be imposed by hand. We describe a natural emergence of Hermiticity which is rooted in principles of equivariant homotopy theory, lends itself to homotopically-typed languages and naturally connects to topological quantum states classified by twisted equivariant KR-theory. Namely, we observe that when the complex numbers are considered as a monoid internal to Z/2-equivariant real linear types, via complex conjugation, then (finite-dimensional) Hilbert spaces do become self-dual objects among internally-complex Real modules. The point is that this construction of Hermitian forms requires of the ambient linear type theory nothing further than a negative unit term of tensor unit type. We observe that just such a term is constructible in LHoTT, where it interprets as an element of the infinity-group of units of the sphere spectrum, tying the foundations of quantum theory to homotopy theory. We close by indicating how this allows for encoding (and verifying) the unitarity of quantum gates and of quantum channels in quantum languages embedded into LHoTT.

When Quantum Meets Classical: Characterizing Hybrid Quantum-Classical Issues Discussed in Developer Forums

Abstract:Recent advances in quantum computing have sparked excitement that this new computing paradigm could solve previously intractable problems. However, due to the faulty nature of current quantum hardware and quantum-intrinsic noise, the full potential of quantum computing is still years away. Hybrid quantum-classical computing has emerged as a possible compromise that achieves the best of both worlds. In this paper, we look at hybrid quantum-classical computing from a software engineering perspective and present the first empirical study focused on characterizing and evaluating recurrent issues faced by developers of hybrid quantum-classical applications. The study comprised a thorough analysis of 531 real-world issues faced by developers -- including software faults, hardware failures, quantum library errors, and developer mistakes -- documented in discussion threads from forums dedicated to quantum computing. By qualitatively analyzing such forum threads, we derive a comprehensive taxonomy of recurring issues in hybrid quantum-classical applications that can be used by both application and platform developers to improve the reliability of hybrid applications. The study considered how these recurring issues manifest and their causes, determining that hybrid applications are crash-dominant (74\% of studied issues) and that errors were predominantly introduced by application developers (70\% of issues). We conclude by identifying recurring obstacles for developers of hybrid applications and actionable recommendations to overcome them.
