Abstract:This article explores the links between chymical medicine, charity, and vocation in the writings and careers of Henri Rousseau de Montbazon and Nicolas Aignan, known as "the Louvre Capuchins" (les capucins du Louvre) because they operated a royally sponsored medical laboratory at the Louvre from 1678 to 1679. It shows that Rousseau and Aignan's hybrid persona as chymical physicians and mendicant friars allowed them to leverage courtly values surrounding charitable poor relief into lucrative patronage under Louis XIV. Aignan in particular developed a detailed theological and natural philosophical defence of this identity, framing it as a recovery of the authentic vocation of the Christian priest-physician, a healer of bodies as well as souls. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, I argue that Rousseau and Aignan's attempts to reconcile their identities as both friars and healers into a single persona were increasingly challenged by the medical establishment and their own order.

Abstract:Current filamentation instability is observed and studied in a laboratory environment with a 60 MeV electron beam and a plasma capillary discharge. Multiple filaments are observed and imaged transversely at the plasma exit with optical transition radiation. By varying the plasma density the transition between single and multiple filaments is found to be k(p)σ(r)~2.2. Scaling of the transverse filament size with the plasma skin depth is predicted in theory and observed over a range of plasma densities. Lowering the bunch charge, and thus the bunch density, suppresses the instability.

Abstract:We examine the metallicity distribution within and between galaxies and hence determine their present -day mean abundance. Adding in components for intergalactic gas, we arrive at an estimate of the mean metal abundance of the Universe. We find the pleasantly Copernican result that the overall mean abundance is close to solar. We then discuss the evolution with time of this quantity, using simplified, but general, models of galactic chemical evolution. The variation of the total metal content of the Universe with epoch turns out to be constrained within fairly well-defined limits for plausible variations in the global mean star formation rate. However, what would be observed at any given redshift depends critically on which regions of galaxies are being sampled and on the formation histories of these particular regions. Finally, we investigate the joint constraints provided by current observations of the evolution of the metallicity and gas content of the Universe, as measured by QSO damped Lyman IX absorbers. We note a generic inconsistency in global models and introduce a more realistic model, with different evolution for different galaxy types, which can overcome this difficulty. Current chemical evidence does not require that the global average star formation rate in the Universe should have decreased by a large factor since galaxy formation began.

Abstract:Count Henri de Bonneval, was born in Bordeaux in 1806, in the line of descent of one of the most ancient French families of noble rank. He was assistant manager of the Strasbourg stud farm in 1830, when Louis-Philippe, an Orleanist, ascended to the throne of the Bourbon Charles X. As several other legitimists, Count Henri refused to take an oath to the new king and prefered to resign his position. Interested in medicine, he was deeply impressed by Hahnemann's Organon der Heilkunst and decided to leave France for KOthen, in Saxony, in order to learn homeopathy directly from its founder Back to France, he defended in Montpellier the first French medical thesis devoted to homeopathy and then opened a consulting room in Bordeaux. He rapidly gained a solid reputation and a large audience as a practitioner of homeopathy. At the same time, Henri acquired the Chateau de Latresne and the 500 acres surrounding land. He renovated and brought up to date the agricultural and wine-producing activities of the estate. The medical doctor soon proved to be an expert agronomist, extending his competence to the famous vineyard Chateau Canon of St. Emilion. Throughout his life, the Count showed notable qualities of philanthropy, materialized at Latresne by the construction of a church and, adjacent to the chapel, a boarding school, two classrooms and shelters for poor or sick old people. At the end of his life, Henri de Bonneval wrote a comprehensive book, that includes the presentation and discussions of the homeopathic methods, some philosophical reflections and personal memories.

Abstract:BY the death of Emile Bourquelot, Professor of galenical pharmacy in the University of Paris, science has sustained an irreparable loss. Born in a small village in the Ardennes in 1852, Bourquelot was apprenticed in a pharmacy in Sedan while the town was still occupied by the Germans. He afterwards became chief pharmacist in the Hôpital Laeonec, and then successively assistant professor and professor of galenical pharmacy in the Ecole Supérieure de Pharmacie, now the faculty of pharmacy in the University of Paris. Bourquelot at once devoted himself to the investigation of various pharmaceutical problems, but gradually restricted himself almost entirely to the study of the enzymes occurring in drugs and various plants, their action and the changes brought about by them in the constituents of drugs and their galenical preparations. His researches in this direction, often in conjunction with M. Herissey, M. Bridel, and other of his assistants and pupils, gained for him a world-wide reputation. His investigation of the constituents of gentian root and of the changes brought about by enzymes during the drying of the root and the making and keeping of preparations made from it may well serve as a model for future workers. The latter years of his life were mainly devoted to the study of the synthetical as well as the analytical action of enzymes, in which field remarkable results were obtained.

Abstract:In 1766, The Bordeaux's apothecary Marc-Hilaire Vilaris (1719-1792) identified with certainty a kaolin's deposit at Saint-Yrieix, in the country of Limousin, allowing so the porcelain manufacture in France and the development of a china clay's and porcelain's dough trade. Archives documents give evidence of regularly supplies of limousin's raw materials by the pharmacist Frantz Heinrich Müller (1732-1820), Director of the Royal china's Manufactury of Denmark, some time before production of the famous table service Flora Danica.

Abstract:Jean Rey, a physician from The Bugue, a little town near Bergerac, published, in 1630, a book entitled "Essays" in which he explained the increase of the mass of lead, when it was strongly heated, by the fixation of a part of the air. This revolutionary publication was not received by the European scientists, because the Father Mersenne, "the secretary of learned Europe", was not able to repeat his experiments. Between 1774 and 1775, Pierre Bayen, who was a military apothecary, published his Works concerning the "precipitate per se", for us HgO, showing that when this compound was destroyed by heating, it produced a gas, and that the mass of this gas and the mass of the mercury obtained were equal to the mass of the "precipitate per se". He concluded that the phlogiston theory was contradictory with the results of the experiments. When, later on, Lavoisier published his important article on the increase of the mass of steal when it was heated in the air, he "forgot" to cite the Works of Bayen. In January 1775, Pierre Bayen published a letter in which he mentioned that he had discovered an exemplar of Jean Rey's book and explained that this physician of the 17th century had supposed the explanation that had been proved by Lavoisier. Nicolas Gobet then published a new edition of the "Essays" in 1777, but this new edition became itself quite rare. An inscription pencilled on the book kept by the British Museum pretends that all the exemplars Lavoisier could find were destroyed. It is not rigorous to conclude on a single document, especially when it is not signed, but it is sufficient to induce doubt.

Abstract:In 1730, shortly before his death, the Paris anatomist Joseph-Guichard Duverney wrote his will, leaving his anatomical specimens to the Académie des Sciences, of which he was a member. But the will was disputed by Pierre Chirac, supervisor of the Jardin du Roi where Duverney, as professor of anatomy, had performed most of the dissections that produced the specimens. The ensuing debate between Chirac and René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, arguing for the Académie, reveals the tensions surrounding both the concept of intellectual property in this period and the collective enterprise in natural philosophy. The differing roles and audiences of the Académie and the Jardin were central to this debate. In addition, this essay explores the origins and significance of the anatomical specimens themselves and their changing role in instruction and display, as well as the transition from the cabinet of curiosities to the natural history museum.

Abstract:Marin Cureau de La Chambre (1594-1669) was a physician from Le Mans who advised and treated two French Kings, Louis XIII and Louis XIV, as well as his patron, Chancellor Pierre Séguier. As both a physician and a philosopher, he was among the first members of the Académie Française and the Académie des Sciences. His key role in dethroning Latin and using French in its place would have sufficed to ensure his notoriety, as French then became a vehicle for disseminating the sciences throughout Europe. However, it was his interpretation of "the functions of the soul" that made him a true pioneer in the field of neuropsychology, even though he has since been forgotten and overlooked. Indeed, he developed concepts that even today seem contemporary, in particular, concepts dealing with emotions and memory in both animals and human beings.
[The marriage between the physician and philology]

Abstract:The day before yesterday: the physician-philologist. The times of the first appearance of printed books and of the re-discovery of ancient texts are also the times of syphilis. The physician, more than a philosopher as Galen suggested, is also a philologist. A very interesting example is fournished by Antonio Benivieni (+1502) and by his book De causis abditis (1506). Yesterday: the philologist-physician. Charles Daremberg (1816-1872) is our example. In 1841, he wrote his medical thesis Exposition des connaissances de Galien sur l'anatomie, la physiologie et la pathologie du systeme nerveux (faculte de medecine de Paris, n 222). Today: a necessary couple, the physician and the philologist. Greek and Latin are no more subjects of teaching in school, and the philologists seem to be strange, dusty and dirty people. Is the physician-philologist still alive or not? To be useful to the daily practice of medicine, history of medicine will be also a philological matter, as philology is the complete study of ancient, modern and contemporary texts. It teaches to read well, to understand all that has been written and, as a consequence, all that the patients tell today to their physicians. The problem is not teaching something more (new facts, new notions...) but teaching to know well; in a word, teaching the famous continuous learning, which is still a difficult reality.

Abstract:During the reign of Louis XIV, anatomical demonstrations became a public attraction in Paris. At the Jardin du Roi, the star performer was Joseph-Guichard Duverney, who attracted hundreds to his anatomy lectures. Simultaneously, Duverney also instructed the Dauphin and his courtiers, lectured to medical students at the Hôtel-Dieu hospital (making off with corpses in the process) and dissected before the Paris Academy of Sciences. Duverney's dramatic, rhetorical and anatomical skills made him the best-known man of science in Louis XIV's Paris.
A multi-disciplinary analysis of the Portrait of Philip the Good in Dijon

Abstract:One of the finest fifteenth-century portraits of the Burgundian Duke Philip the Good resides in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. This small yet exceptionally crafted panel holds significance for both historians and art historians alike. Surprisingly, prior to this study, the context, the dating and the authorship of the piece remained obscure, and the widely circulated hypothesis of it being "a copy of a lost portrait by Rogier van der Weyden" has never been corroborated by convincing arguments. Clarifying the context, dating and authorship of the painting were the primary objectives of the investigations discussed in the article. Therefore, this painting underwent a multidisciplinary investigation spanning both the positive and human sciences. Macro-XRF scans were conducted alongside hyperspectral reflectance scans, multispectral imaging in the visible and infrared range, and optical coherence tomography. These analyses were complemented by an art historical study. As a result, a precise delineation between authentic and retouched sections was achieved. This article does not merely present the various perspectives separately but constructs a coherent narrative based on all these foundations. This holistic multidisciplinary research methodology produced a clear account, albeit with some scope for future inquiry. The involvement of the painter Pieter Cristus was conclusively demonstrated. This painter, whether himself personally, an assistant in the workshop or a contemporary follower, is attributed to the genesis of this work, which is presumed to be not the original portrait but a contemporaneous copy, possibly commissioned by the Burgundian Duke himself. While we no longer remain in the dark and have lifted some veils, this study also paves the way for further investigation into this panel and the numerous other portraits of Philip the Good.

Abstract:Summary The transcutaneous partial pressures of oxygen (tcpO2) and carbon dioxide (tcpCO2) were measured at eight different sites in 10 adult male subjects with an electrode at a temperature of 44°C. The mean tcpO2 values (mmHg) were significantly lower on the face (forehead 26·6, cheek 29·6) and the palm (26·4) than at other sites (60·6–69·6), The tcpCO2 values (mmHg) were only slightly higher on the face. Removal of the stratum corneum produced an average increase of the tcpO2 on the palm of 37·6 mmHg and on the forehead of 19·6 mmHg. However, in 10 children with an age range of 3–9 years, the difference in the mean pO2 between the cheek and forearm was very small. There was no significant difference in the cutaneous blood flow at 44°C between the cheek, palm and forearm.
Frère Jacques Beaulieu: from rogue lithotomist to nursery rhyme character

Abstract:Purpose: We discuss the history of Frère Jacques Beaulieu, a celebrated 17th century French lithotomist, and question the relationship of his name to a well-known nursery rhyme character. Materials and methods: We reviewed historical reports about Beaulieu and his career as a lithotomist. Nursery rhyme interpretations were also reviewed. Results: Beaulieu was born in 1651 to a peasant family and learned the practice of lithotomy by apprenticeship. He was never formally ordained yet donned a monk habit and called himself Frère Jacques. He was the first person to use the lateral approach to perineal lithotomy and openly shared his surgical technique. His lithotomy procedure was observed by the high court in Paris on 3 separate occasions between 1697 and 1704. Unfortunately his patients had significant morbidity and mortality, and he was denied operating privileges. He performed approximately 5,000 lithotomies in 30 years and died in 1719 at age 68 years. The nursery rhyme "Frère Jacques" probably refers to a playful group of Jacobinic monks who often overslept. We found no direct association between Frere Jacques Beaulieu and the nursery rhyme character. Conclusions: Beaulieu was an early urologist who was the first to describe the lateral approach to perineal lithotomy. Unlike other lithotomists of the 17th century, he openly shared his surgical techniques and stimulated others to refine the procedure. Regardless of the exact derivation of the nursery rhyme, the name Frere Jacques will always be remembered in song.

We will discuss in this article five different examples taken from personal recent analysis dealing with aristocratic bodies from French Middle Ages to modern times. Botanical, mineralogical and toxicological studies were performed in order to better understand anatomic discoveries and technical facts.
Turbulence Measurements in the Garonne River Tidal Bore: First Observations

Abstract:A tidal bore is an abrupt rise in water depth advancing in some estuaries during spring tide conditions. In the present study, some detailed turbulence field measurements were conducted continuously at high-frequency (64 Hz) in the Garonne River tidal bore. The turbulent velocity components were sampled with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) at 0.8 m beneath the freesurface. On 10 and 11 Sept. 2010, the tidal bore was undular as it passed in front of the sampling site. The tidal bore Froude number estimated from the channel bathymetry and observations was equal to 1.20 and 1.30 on 10 and 11 Sept. 2010 respectively. The turbulent velocity data showed the marked impact of the tidal bore propagation. The longitudinal velocity component highlighted some rapid flow deceleration during the passage of the tidal bore, associated with a sudden rise in the free surface elevation, and a flow reversal after the tidal bore front passage. The Reynolds stress data indicated some large amplitudes and rapid fluctuations during the tidal bore and flood flow. These field observations are the first detailed turbulence measurements in a tidal bore with high spatial and temporal resolutions.

Abstract:The Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program has been performing surveillance of antibiotic-resistant organisms in Canada since 1994. The authors of this study compared two point-prevalence surveys of antimicrobial use that were conducted in hospitals that were participating in the program in 2002 and 2009. The authors compared the use of antimicrobials between these two surveys. The changes in antimicrobial use over time are presented, in addition to potential reasons for and consequences of these changes.
