Abstract:We offer elementary proofs for several results in consecutive pattern containment that were previously demonstrated using ideas from cluster method and analytical combinatorics. Furthermore, we establish new general bounds on the growth rates of consecutive pattern avoidance in permutations.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, we study the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a generalized pattern. Generalized patterns allow the requirement that some pairs of letters must be adjacent in an occurrence of the pattern in the permutation, and consecutive patterns are a particular case of them. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern, showing that they are an exponentially small proportion of the total number of permutations. For some other generalized patterns we give partial results, showing that the number of permutations avoiding them grows faster than for classical patterns but more slowly than for consecutive patterns.

Abstract:Starting with an inclusion-exclusion proof of a combinatorial identity, a direct bijection can be produced using recursive subtraction (sometimes with a direct combinatorial description). We apply this method to identities for generalized Wilf equivalences among consecutive patterns in inversion sequences, giving direct bijective proofs of some generalized Wilf equivalences shown by Auli and Elizalde. We also give new bijective proofs of a stronger relation among some consecutive patterns.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a bijection between 3142-avoiding permutations and 3241-avoiding permutations which proves the equidistribution of five classical set-valued statistics. Our bijection also enables us to establish a bijection between 3142-avoiding permutations and 4132-avoiding permutations, and a bijection between 2413-avoiding permutations and 1423-avoiding permutations, both of which preserve five classical set-valued statistics. Our results are generalizations of several conjectures posed by Burstein.

Abstract:The concept of pattern avoidance respectively containment in permutations can be extended to permutations on multisets in a straightforward way. In this note we present a direct proof of the already known fact that the well-known Stanley-Wilf Conjecture, stating that the number of permutations avoiding a given pattern does not grow faster than exponentially, also holds for permutations on multisets.

Abstract:A Cayley permutation is a word of positive integers such that if a letter appears in this word, then all positive integers smaller than that letter also appear. We initiate a systematic study of pattern avoidance on Cayley permutations adopting a combinatorial species approach. Our methods lead to species equations, generating series, and counting formulas for Cayley permutations avoiding any pattern of length at most three. We also introduce the species of primitive structures as a generalization of Cayley permutations with no "flat steps". Finally, we explore various notions of Wilf equivalence arising in this context.

On (shape-)Wilf-equivalence of certain sets of (partially ordered) patterns

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Gao and Kitaev on Wilf-equivalence of sets of patterns {12345,12354} and {45123,45213} that extends the list of 10 related conjectures proved in the literature in a series of papers. To achieve our goals, we prove generalized versions of shape-Wilf-equivalence results of Backelin, West, and Xin and use a particular result on shape-Wilf-equivalence of monotone patterns. We also derive general results on shape-Wilf-equivalence of certain classes of partially ordered patterns and use their specialization (also appearing in a paper by Bloom and Elizalde) as an essential piece in proving the conjecture. Our results allow us to show (shape-)Wilf-equivalence of large classes of sets of patterns, including 11 out of 12 classes found by Bean et al. in relation to the conjecture.

Counting occurrences of patterns in permutations

Abstract:We develop a new, powerful method for counting elements in a multiset. As a first application, we use this algorithm to study the number of occurrences of patterns in a permutation. For patterns of length 3 there are two Wilf classes, and the general behaviour of these is reasonably well-known. We slightly extend some of the known results in that case, and exhaustively study the case of patterns of length 4, about which there is little previous knowledge. For such patterns, there are seven Wilf classes, and based on extensive enumerations and careful series analysis, we have conjectured the asymptotic behaviour for all classes.

Pattern avoidance in nonnesting permutations

Abstract:Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the distribution of consecutive patterns in the set of 123-avoiding permutations and the set of 132-avoiding permutations, that is, in $\mathcal{S}_n(123)$ and $\mathcal{S}_n(132)$. We first study the distribution of consecutive pattern $\gamma$-matches in $\mathcal{S}_n(123)$ and $\mathcal{S}_n(132)$ for each length 3 consecutive pattern $\gamma$. Then we extend our methods to study the joint distributions of multiple consecutive patterns. Some more general cases are discussed in this paper as well.

Abstract:Two words $p$ and $q$ are avoided by the same number of length-$n$ words, for all $n$, precisely when $p$ and $q$ have the same set of border lengths. Previous proofs of this theorem use generating functions but do not provide an explicit bijection. We give a bijective proof for all pairs $p, q$ that have the same set of proper borders, establishing a natural bijection from the set of words avoiding $p$ to the set of words avoiding $q$.

Wilf equivalences for patterns in rooted labeled forests

Abstract:Building off recent work of Garg and Peng, we continue the investigation into classical and consecutive pattern avoidance in rooted forests, resolving some of their conjectures and questions and proving generalizations whenever possible. Through extensions of the forest Simion-Schmidt bijection introduced by Anders and Archer, we demonstrate a new family of forest-Wilf equivalences, completing the classification of forest-Wilf equivalence classes for sets consisting of a pattern of length 3 and a pattern of length at most 5. We also find a new family of nontrivial c-forest-Wilf equivalences between single patterns using the forest analogue of the Goulden-Jackson cluster method, showing that a ( 1 − o ( 1 ) ) n -fraction of patterns of length n satisfy a nontrivial c-forest-Wilf equivalence and that there are c-forest-Wilf equivalence classes of patterns of length n of exponential size. Additionally, we consider a forest analogue of super-strong-c-Wilf equivalence, introduced for permutations by Dwyer and Elizalde, showing that super-strong-c-forest-Wilf equivalences are trivial by enumerating linear extensions of forest cluster posets.

Combinatorial Exploration: An algorithmic framework for enumeration

Abstract:Combinatorial Exploration is a new domain-agnostic algorithmic framework to automatically and rigorously study the structure of combinatorial objects and derive their counting sequences and generating functions. We describe how it works and provide an open-source Python implementation. As a prerequisite, we build up a new theoretical foundation for combinatorial decomposition strategies and combinatorial specifications. We then apply Combinatorial Exploration to the domain of permutation patterns, to great effect. We rederive hundreds of results in the literature in a uniform manner and prove many new ones. These results can be found in a new public database, the Permutation Pattern Avoidance Library (PermPAL) at <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://permpal.com" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>. Finally, we give three additional proofs-of-concept, showing examples of how Combinatorial Exploration can prove results in the domains of alternating sign matrices, polyominoes, and set partitions.

Composable Constraint Models for Permutation Enumeration

Abstract:Constraint programming (CP) is a powerful tool for modeling mathematical concepts and objects and finding both solutions or counter examples. One of the major strengths of CP is that problems can easily be combined or expanded. In this paper, we illustrate that this versatility makes CP an ideal tool for exploring problems in permutation patterns. We declaratively define permutation properties, permutation pattern avoidance and containment constraints using CP and show how this allows us to solve a wide range of problems. We show how this approach enables the arbitrary composition of these conditions, and also allows the easy addition of extra conditions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our techniques by modelling the containment and avoidance of six permutation patterns, eight permutation properties and measuring five statistics on the resulting permutations. In addition to calculating properties and statistics for the generated permutations, we show that arbitrary additional constraints can also be easily and efficiently added. This approach enables mathematicians to investigate permutation pattern problems in a quick and efficient manner. We demonstrate the utility of constraint programming for permutation patterns by showing how we can easily and efficiently extend the known permutation counts for a conjecture involving the class of $1324$ avoiding permutations. For this problem, we expand the enumeration of $1324$-avoiding permutations with a fixed number of inversions to permutations of length 16 and show for the first time that in the enumeration there is a pattern occurring which follows a unique sequence on the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

Abstract:The main theme of this paper is the enumeration of the occurrence of a pattern in words and permutations. We mainly focus on asymptotic properties of the sequence $f_r^v(k,n),$ the number of $n$-array $k$-ary words that contain a given pattern $v$ exactly $r$ times. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of the random variable $X_n,$ the number of pattern occurrences in a random $n$-array word. The two topics are closely related through the identity $P(X_n=r) = $ $\frac{1}{k^n}f_r^v(k,n).$ In particular, we show that for any $r\geq 0,$ the Stanley-Wilf sequence $\bigl(f_r^v(k,n)\bigr)^{1/n}$ converges to a limit independent of $r,$ and determine the value of the limit. We then obtain several limit theorems for the distribution of $X_n,$ including a CLT, large deviation estimates, and the exact growth rate of the entropy of $X_n.$ Furthermore, we introduce a concept of weak avoidance and link it to a certain family of non-product measures on words that penalize pattern occurrences but do not forbid them entirely. We analyze this family of probability measures in a small parameter regime, where the distributions can be understood as a perturbation of a uniform measure. Finally, we extend some of our results for words, including the one regarding the equivalence of the limits of the Stanley-Wilf sequences, to pattern occurrences in permutations.

Abstract:We introduce "fertility Wilf equivalence," "strong fertility Wilf equivalence," and "postorder Wilf equivalence," three variants of Wilf equivalence for permutation classes that formalize some phenomena that have appeared in the study of West's stack-sorting map. We introduce "sliding operators" and show that they induce useful bijections among sets of valid hook configurations. Combining these maps with natural decompositions of valid hook configurations, we give infinitely many examples of fertility, strong fertility, and postorder Wilf equivalences. As a consequence, we obtain infinitely many joint equidistribution results concerning many permutation statistics. In one very special case, we reprove and extensively generalize a result of Bouvel and Guibert. Another case reproves and generalizes a result of the current author. A separate very special case proves and generalizes a conjecture of the current author concerning stack-sorting preimages and the Boolean-Catalan numbers. We end with two open questions.
Shifts of Finite Type Obtained by Forbidding a Single Pattern

Abstract:Given a finite word $w$, Guibas and Odlyzko (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) showed that the autocorrelation polynomial $\phi_w(t)$ of $w$, which records the set of self-overlaps of $w$, explicitly determines for each $n$, the number $|B_n(w)|$ of words of length $n$ that avoid $w$. We consider this and related problems from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics, focusing on the setting of $X_{\{w\}}$, the space of all bi-infinite sequences that avoid $w$. We first summarize and elaborate upon (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) and other work to show that the sequence $|B_n(w)|$ is equivalent to several invariants of $X_{\{w\}}$. We then give a finite-state labeled graphical representation $L_w$ of $X_{\{w\}}$ and show that $w$ can be recovered from the graph isomorphism class of the unlabeled version of $L_w$. Using $L_w$, we apply ideas from probability and Perron-Frobenius theory to obtain results comparing features of $X_{\{w\}}$ for different $w$. Next, we give partial results on the problem of classifying the spaces $X_{\{w\}}$ up to conjugacy. Finally, we extend some of our results to spaces of multi-dimensional arrays that avoid a given finite pattern.

Further Bijections to Pattern-Avoiding Valid Hook Configurations

Abstract:Valid hook configurations are combinatorial objects used to understand West's stack-sorting map. We extend existing bijections corresponding valid hook configurations to intervals in partial orders on Motzkin paths. To enumerate valid hook configurations on $312$-avoiding permutations, we build off of an existing bijection into a Motzkin poset and construct a bijection to certain well-studied closed lattice walks in the first quadrant. We use existing results about these lattice paths to show that valid hook configurations on $312$-avoiding permutations are not counted by a $D$-finite generating function, resolving a question of Defant's, and additionally to compute asymptotics for the number of such configurations. We also extend a bijection of Defant's to a correspondence between valid hook configurations on $132$-avoiding permutations and intervals in the Motzkin-Tamari posets, providing a more elegant proof of Defant's enumeration thereof. To investigate this bijection, we present a number of lemmas about valid hook configurations that are generally applicable and further study the bijections of Defant's.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pattern avoidance for stabilized-interval-free (SIF) permutations. These permutations are contained in the set of indecomposable permutations and in the set of derangements. We enumerate pattern-avoiding SIF permutations for classical and pairs of patterns of size 3. In particular, for the patterns 123 and 231, we rely on combinatorial arguments and the fixed-point distribution of general permutations avoiding these patterns. We briefly discuss 123-avoiding permutations with two fixed points and offer a conjecture for their enumeration by the distance between their fixed points. For the pattern 231, we also give a direct argument that uses a bijection to ordered forests.

Abstract:Certain famous combinatorial sequences, such as the Catalan numbers and the Motzkin numbers, when taken modulo a prime power, can be computed by finite automata. Many theorems about such sequences can therefore be proved using Walnut, which is an implementation of a decision procedure for proving various properties of automatic sequences. In this paper we explore some results (old and new) that can be proved using this method.
