Abstract:We present Gemini-N/'Alopeke speckle observations of KIC 9832227, a system originally predicted to become a red nova. The diffraction limited observations do not find an outer companion between 11 and 678 AU that could be responsible for the period changes of the system.

Abstract:Abstract We observed the candidate dual quasar J2122−0026 with speckle interferometric imaging at the Gemini-North Observatory. Results of our one-hour high resolution ‘Alopeke imaging observation agree with and confirm Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the pair separated at ∼0.′′5. Abstract:We explore the possibility of detecting very faint, very close-in stellar companions using large aperture ground-based telescopes and the technique of optical speckle imaging. We examine the state of high-angular-resolution speckle imaging and contrast levels being achieved using current speckle cameras on the Gemini 8 m telescope. We then explore the use of the modern image reconstruction technique—multiframe blind deconvolution (MFBD)—applied to speckle imaging from the Gemini 8 m telescope. We show that MFBD allows us to measure the flux ratio of the imaged stars to high accuracy and the reconstructed images yield higher precision astrometry. Both of these advances provide a large refinement in the derived astrophysical parameters compared with current Fourier techniques. MFBD image reconstructions reach contrast levels of ∼5 × 10 −3 , near the diffraction limit, to ∼10 −4 about 1.′′0 away. At these deep contrast levels with angular limits starting near the 8 m diffraction limit (∼20 mas), most stellar companions to a solar-like stars can be imaged in the optical to near-IR bandpass (320–1000 nm). Abstract:Stellar multiplicity is correlated with many stellar properties, yet multiplicity measurements have proven difficult for the M dwarfs—the most common type of star in our galaxy—due to their faintness and the fact that a reasonably complete inventory of later M dwarfs did not exist until recently. We have therefore carried out the Pervasive Overview of "Kompanions" of Every M dwarf in Our Neighborhood (POKEMON) survey, which made use of the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument on the 4.3 m Lowell Discovery Telescope, along with the NN-EXPLORE Exoplanet Stellar Speckle Imager on the 3.5 m WIYN telescope. The POKEMON sample is volume limited from M0V through M9V out to 15 pc, with additional brighter targets at larger distances. In total, 1125 targets were observed. New discoveries were presented in the first paper in the series. In this second paper in the series, we present all detected companions, gauge our astrometric and photometric precision, and compare our filtered and filterless speckle observations. We find that the majority (58.9%) of the companions we detect in our speckle images are not resolved in Gaia, demonstrating the need for high-resolution imaging in addition to long-term astrometric monitoring. Additionally, we find that the majority (73.2%) of simulated stellar companions would be detectable by our speckle observations. Specifically within 100 au, we find that 70.3% of simulated companions are recovered. Finally, we discuss future directions of the POKEMON survey.

Integral Field Spectroscopy of the Cometary Starburst Galaxy NGC 4861

Abstract:Using the PMAS Integral Field Unit on the Calar Alto 3.5m telescope we observed the southern component (Markarian 59) of the `cometary' starburst galaxy NGC 4861. Mrk 59 is centred on a giant nebula and concentration of stars 1 kpc in diameter. Strong $\rm H\alpha$ emission points to a star-formation rate (SFR) at least 0.47 $\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$. Mrk 59 has a very high [OIII]$\rm\lambda5007/H\beta$ ratio, reaching 7.35 in the central nebula, with a second peak at a star-forming hotspot further north. Fast outflows are not detected but nebular motion and galaxy rotation produce relative velocities up to 40 km $\rm s^{-1}$. Spectral analysis of different regions with `Fitting Analysis using Differential evolution Optimisation' (FADO) finds that the stars in the central and `spur' nebulae are very young, $\rm \leq125~Myr$ with a large $\rm <10~Myr$ contribution. Older stars ($\rm \sim 1~Gyr$) make up the northern disk component, while the other regions show mixtures of 1 Gyr age with very young stars. This and the high specific SFR $\rm\sim 3.5~Gyr^{-1}$ imply a bimodal star formation history, with Mrk 59 formed in ongoing starbursts fuelled by a huge gas inflow, turning the galaxy into an asymmetric `green pea' or blue compact dwarf. We map the HeII$\lambda4686$ emission, and identify a broad component from the central nebula, consistent with the emission of $\sim 300$ Wolf-Rayet stars. About a third of the HeII$\lambda$4686 flux is a narrow line emitted from a more extended area covering the central and spur nebulae, and may have a different origin.

Abstract:Here we present speckle observations of 16 low-separation (s < 30 au) high-probability candidate binaries from the catalog by Medan et al., where secondaries typically lack astrometric solutions in Gaia. From these speckle observations, we find a second component is always detected within the field of view. To determine if the detection is consistent with a physical companion or a chance alignment with a background source, we utilize a statistic from Tokovinin & Kiyaeva that compares the apparent motion of the systems to the expected orbital motion ( μ ′ ). Using simulated binary orbits, we construct likelihood distributions of μ ′ assuming various total errors on the measurements. With the hypothesis that the system is a true binary, we show that large measurement errors can result in μ ′ values higher than expected for bound systems. Using simulated chance alignments, we also create similar likelihoods to test this alternative hypothesis. By combining likelihoods of both true binaries and chance alignments, we find that 15 of the 16 candidates are physical systems regardless of the level of measurement error. Our findings also accommodate all 16 as physical systems if the average, relative measurement error on the binary separations and position angles is ∼4.3%, which is consistent with our knowledge of the Gaia and Gemini speckle pipelines. Importantly, beyond assessing the likelihood of a true binary versus chance alignment, this quantitative assessment of the true average measurement error will allow more robust error estimates of mass determinations from short separation binaries with Gaia and/or Gemini speckle data.

Abstract:We report here the highest resolution near-IR imaging to date of the HD 141569A disc taken as part of the NICI Science Campaign. We recover 4 main features in the NICI images of the HD 141569 disc discovered in previous HST imaging: 1) an inner ring / spiral feature. Once deprojected, this feature does not appear circular. 2) an outer ring which is considerably brighter on the western side compared to the eastern side, but looks fairly circular in the deprojected image. 3) an additional arc-like feature between the inner and outer ring only evident on the east side. In the deprojected image, this feature appears to complete the circle of the west side inner ring and 4) an evacuated cavity from 175 AU inwards. Compared to the previous HST imaging with relatively large coronagraphic inner working angles (IWA), the NICI coronagraph allows imaging down to an IWA of 0.3". Thus, the inner edge of the inner ring/spiral feature is well resolved and we do not find any additional disc structures within 175 AU. We note some additional asymmetries in this system. Specifically, while the outer ring structure looks circular in this deprojection, the inner bright ring looks rather elliptical. This suggests that a single deprojection angle is not appropriate for this system and that there may be an offset in inclination between the two ring / spiral features. We find an offset of 4+-2 AU between the inner ring and the star center, potentially pointing to unseen inner companions.

The POKEMON Speckle Survey of Nearby M Dwarfs. I. New Discoveries

Abstract:M dwarfs are favorable targets for exoplanet detection with current instrumentation, but stellar companions can induce false positives and inhibit planet characterization. Knowledge of stellar companions is also critical to our understanding of how binary stars form and evolve. We have therefore conducted a survey of stellar companions around nearby M dwarfs, and here we present our new discoveries. Using the DSSI speckle imager at the 4.3-meter Lowell Discovery Telescope, and the similar NESSI instrument at the 3.5-meter WIYN telescope, we carried out a volume-limited survey of M-dwarf multiplicity to 15 parsecs, with a special emphasis on including the later M dwarfs that were overlooked in previous surveys. Additional brighter targets at larger distances were included for a total sample size of 1070 M dwarfs. Observations of these 1070 targets revealed 26 new companions; 22 of these systems were previously thought to be single. If all new discoveries are confirmed, then the number of known multiples in the sample will increase by 7.6%. Using our observed properties, as well as the parallaxes and 2MASS K magnitudes for these objects, we calculate the projected separation, and estimate the mass ratio and component spectral types, for these systems. We report the discovery of a new M-dwarf companion to the white dwarf Wolf 672 A, which hosts a known M-dwarf companion as well, making the system trinary. We also examine the possibility that the new companion to 2MASS J13092185-2330350 is a brown dwarf. Finally, we discuss initial insights from the POKEMON survey.

Adaptive Optics Imaging and Spectroscopy of Cygnus A: I. Evidence for a Minor Merger

Abstract:We present Keck II adaptive optics near infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of the central regions of the powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A. The 0.05" resolution images clearly show an unresolved nucleus between two spectacular ionization/scattering cones. We report the discovery of a relatively bright (K'~19) secondary point source 0.4" or 400 pc in projection southwest of the radio nucleus. The object is also visible in archival Hubble Space Telescope optical images, although it is easily confused with the underlying structure of the host. Although the near infrared colors of this secondary point source are roughly consistent with those of an L-dwarf, its spectrum and optical-to-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) virtually rule out the possibility that it may be any foreground projected object. We conclude that the secondary point source is likely to be an extragalactic object associated with Cygnus A. We consider several interpretations of the nature of this object, including: a young star cluster peering through the dust at the edge of one of the ionization cones; an older, large globular cluster; a compact cloud of dust or electrons that is acting as a mirror of the hidden active nucleus; and the dense core of a gas stripped satellite galaxy that is merging with the giant elliptical host. The data presented here are most consistent with the minor merger scenario. The spectra and SED of the object suggest that it may be a densely packed conglomeration of older stars heavily extincted by dust, and its high luminosity and compact nature are consistent with those of a satellite that has been stripped to its tidal radius. Further spectroscopic observations are nevertheless necessary to confirm this possibility.

Abstract:We present near-IR speckle images of 21 massive Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) associated with outflows. The aim of this study is to search for sub-arcsecond reflection nebulae associated with the outflow cavity. We find that 6 of the massive YSOs show a conical nebula which can be interpreted in terms of reflected light from the dusty walls of the outflow cavity. In all cases, the small scale structures seen in our images are compared with outflow indicators found in the literature. No clear correlation is found between the presence of the reflection nebulosity and any property such as degree of embeddedness. We also note that 3 of the sources show close companions, one of them belonging also to the sample with conical nebula.

Abstract:We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging confirming the optical disappearance of the failed supernova (SN) candidate identified by Gerke, Kochanek & Stanek. This similar to 25 M-circle dot red supergiant experienced a weak similar to 10(6) L-circle dot optical outburst in 2009 and is now at least 5 mag fainter than the progenitor in the optical. The mid-IR flux has slowly decreased to the lowest levels since the first measurements in 2004. There is faint (2000-3000 L-circle dot) near-IR emission likely associated with the source. We find the late-time evolution of the source to be inconsistent with obscuration from an ejected, dusty shell. Models of the spectral energy distribution indicate that the remaining bolometric luminosity is >6 times fainter than that of the progenitor and is decreasing as similar to t(-4/3). We conclude that the transient is unlikely to be an SN impostor or stellar merger. The event is consistent with the ejection of the envelope of a red supergiant in a failed SN and the late-time emission could be powered by fallback accretion on to a newly formed black hole. Future IR and X-ray observations are needed to confirm this interpretation of the fate for the star.

Abstract:M dwarfs are ubiquitous in our Galaxy, and the rate at which they host stellar companions, and the properties of these companions, provide a window into the formation and evolution of the star(s), and of any planets that they may host. The Pervasive Overview of "Kompanions" of Every M dwarf in Our Neighborhood (POKEMON) speckle survey of nearby M dwarfs is volume limited from M0V through M9V out to 15 pc, with additional targets at larger distances. In total, 1125 stars were observed, and 455 of these are within the volume-limited, 15 pc sample of M-dwarf primaries. When we combine the speckle observations with known companions from the literature, we find that the stellar multiplicity rate of M dwarfs within 15 pc is 23.5% ± 2.0%, and that the companion rate is 28.8% ± 2.1%. We also find that the projected separation distribution for multiples that are known to host planets peaks at 198 au, while the distribution for multiples that are not yet known to host planets peaks at 5.57 au. This result suggests that the presence of close-in stellar companions inhibits the formation of M-dwarf planetary systems, similar to what has been found for FGK stars.

Abstract:We present Spitzer observations of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs) in three interacting systems: NGC 5291, Arp105 and Stephan's Quintet. The spectra show bright emission from polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nebular lines and warm molecular hydrogen, characteristic of recent episodes of star formation. The PAH emission that falls in the IRAC 8.0 micron band leads to the TDGs having an extremely red IRAC color, with [4.5] - [8.0] > 3. The emission from PAHs is characterized by a model with mainly neutral 100-C PAH atoms.
An astrometric companion to the nearby metal-poor, low-mass star LHS 1589

Abstract:We report the discovery of a companion to the high proper motion star LHS 1589, a nearby high-velocity, low-mass subdwarf. The companion (LHS 1589B) is located 0.224+/-0.004" to the southwest of the primary (LHS 1589A), and is 0.5 magnitude fainter than the primary in the K_s band. The pair was resolved with the IRCAL infrared camera at Lick Observatory, operating with the Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics system. A low-resolution spectrum of the unresolved pair obtained at the MDM observatory shows the source to be consistent with a cool subdwarf of spectral subtype sdK7.5. A photometric distance estimate places the metal-poor system at a distance d=81+/-18 parsecs from the Sun. We also measure a radial velocity V_rad=67+/-8 km/s which, together with the proper motion and estimated distance, suggests that the pair is roaming the inner Galactic halo on a highly eccentric orbit. With a projected orbital separation s=18.1+/-4.8 AU, and a crude estimate of the system's total mass, we estimate the orbital period of the system to be in the range 75 yr < P < 500 yr. This suggests that the dynamical mass of the system could be derived astrometrically, after monitoring the orbital motion over a decade or so. The LHS 1589AB system could thus provide a much needed constraint to the mass-luminosity relationship of metal-poor, low-mass stars.

High-Resolution Near Infrared Spectroscopy of HD~100546: IV. Orbiting Companion Disappears on Schedule

Abstract:HD~100546 is a Herbig Ae/Be star surrounded by a disk with a large central region that is cleared of gas and dust (i.e., an inner hole). High-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy reveals a rich emission spectrum of fundamental ro-vibrational CO emission lines whose time variable properties point to the presence of an orbiting companion within the hole. The Doppler shift and spectroastrometric signal of the CO v=1-0 P26 line, observed from 2003 to 2013, are consistent with a source of excess CO emission that orbits the star near the inner rim of the disk. The properties of the excess emission are consistent with those of a circumplanetary disk. In this paper, we report follow up observations that confirm our earlier prediction that the orbiting source of excess emission would disappear behind the near side of the inner rim of the outer disk in 2017. We find that while the hotband CO lines remained unchanged in 2017, the v=1-0 P26 line and its spectroastrometric signal returned to the profile observed in 2003. With these new observations, we further constrain the origin of the emission and discuss possible ways of confirming the presence of an orbiting planetary companion in the inner disk.

Abstract:The F-type star KIC. 8462852 has recently been identified as an exceptional target for search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) observations. We describe an analysis methodology for optical SETI, which we have used to analyze nine hours of serendipitous archival observations of KIC. 8462852 made with the VERITAS gamma-ray observatory between 2009 and 2015. No evidence of pulsed optical beacons, above a pulse intensity at the Earth of approximately 1 photon m(-2), is found. We also discuss the potential use of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays in searching for extremely short duration optical transients in general.

Abstract:Discovering new actively-accreting protoplanets is crucial to answering open questions about planet formation. However, identifying such planets at orbital distances where they are expected to be abundant is extremely challenging, both due to the technical requirements and large distances to star-forming regions. Here we use the kernel phase interferometry (KPI) technique to search for companions around the $\sim$6 and $\sim$8 Myr old Herbig Ae stars MWC 758 and MWC 480. KPI is a data analysis technique which is sensitive to moderate asymmetries, arising from eg. a circumstellar disk or companions with contrasts of up to 6-8 mags, at separations down to and even below the classical Rayleigh diffraction limit ($\sim 1.2\lambda / D$). Using the high spectral resolution K-band mode of the SCExAO/CHARIS integral field spectrograph, we search for both excess Br-$\gamma$ line emission and continuum emission from companions around MWC 480 and MWC 758. We are able to set limits on the presence of rapidly accreting protoplanets and brown dwarfs between 4 and 16 au, well interior to those of previous studies. In Br-$\gamma$, we set limits on excess line emission equivalent to accretion rates ranging from $10^{-5} M_{j}^{2}.yr^{-1}$ to $10^{-6}M_{j}^{2}.yr^{-1}$. Our achievable contrasts demonstrate that KPI using SCExAO/CHARIS is a promising technique to search for giant accreting protoplanets at smaller separations compared to conventional imaging.

Abstract:Here we show that the low temperature phase of magnetite is associated with an effective, although fractional, ordering of the charge. Evidence and a quantitative evaluation of the atomic charges are achieved by using resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) experiments whose results are further analyzed with the help of ab initio calculations of the scattering factors involved. By confirming the results obtained from X-ray crystallography we have shown that RXD is able to probe quantitatively the electronic structure in very complex oxides, whose importance covers a wide domain of applications.
