Abstract:Modal quantum theory (MQT) is a "toy model" of quantum theory in which amplitudes are elements of a general field. The theory predicts, not the probabilities of a measurement result, but only whether or not a result is possible. In this paper we review MQT and extend it to include mixed states, generalized measurements and open system dynamics. Even though MQT does not have density operators, superoperators or any concept of "positivity", we can nevertheless establish a precise analogue to the usual representation theorem for CP maps. We also embed MQT in a larger class of modal theories. We show that the possibility assignments for separate measurements on a bipartite system in MQT are always weakly consistent with some probability assignment that respects the no-signalling principle.

Abstract:We prove a generalized version of the no-broadcasting theorem, applicable to essentially \emph{any} nonclassical finite-dimensional probabilistic model satisfying a no-signaling criterion, including ones with ``super-quantum'' correlations. A strengthened version of the quantum no-broadcasting theorem follows, and its proof is significantly simpler than existing proofs of the no-broadcasting theorem.

Abstract:We examine the toy model of modal quantum theory (MQT), an analogue of actual quantum theory based on finite fields. In particular, we investigate how several essential ``no-go'' results (for cloning, deleting and hiding processes) work in MQT. Cloning and deleting are still forbidden in MQT, though the details of these results are somewhat different in the new context. However, the information of a modal qubit can be completely hidden in the correlations between two entangled modal qubits.

Abstract:We propose in this note the study of quantum channels from association schemes. This is done by interpreting the (0,1)-matrices of a scheme as the Kraus operators of a channel. Working in the framework of one-shot zero-error information theory, we give bounds and closed formulas for various independence numbers of the relative non-commutative (confusability) graphs, or, equivalently, graphical operator systems. We use pseudocyclic association schemes as an example. In this case, we show that the unitary entanglement-assisted independence number grows at least quadratically faster, with respect to matrix size, than the independence number. The latter parameter was introduced by Beigi and Shor as a generalization of the one-shot Shannon capacity, in analogy with the corresponding graph-theoretic notion.

Abstract:The no cloning theorem leads to information-theoretic security in various quantum cryptographic protocols. However, this security typically derives from a possibly weaker property that classical information encoded in certain quantum states cannot be broadcast. To formally capture this property, we introduce the study of "orthogonality broadcasting." When attempting to broadcast the orthogonality of two different qubit bases, we establish that the power of classical and quantum communication is equivalent. However, quantum communication is shown to be strictly more powerful for broadcasting orthogonality in higher dimensions. We then relate orthogonality broadcasting to quantum position verification and provide a new method for establishing error bounds. Our key technical contribution is an uncertainty relation that uses the geometric relation of the states that undergo broadcasting rather than the non-commutative aspect of the final measurements.

Abstract:The quantum no-broadcasting theorem states that it is impossible to produce perfect copies of an arbitrary quantum state, even if the copies are allowed to be correlated. Here we show that, although quantum broadcasting cannot be achieved by any physical process, it can be achieved by a virtual process, described by a Hermitian-preserving trace-preserving map. This virtual process is canonical: it is the only map that broadcasts all quantum states, is covariant under unitary evolution, is invariant under permutations of the copies, and reduces to the classical broadcasting map when subjected to decoherence. We show that the optimal physical approximation to the canonical broadcasting map is the optimal universal quantum cloning, and we also show that virtual broadcasting can be achieved by a virtual measure-and-prepare protocol, where a virtual measurement is performed, and, depending on the outcomes, two copies of a virtual quantum state are generated. Abstract:The no-quantum broadcasting theorem which is a weaker version of the nocloning theorem restricts us from broadcasting completely unknown quantum information to multiple users. However, if the sender is aware of the quantum information (state) to be broadcasted, then the above restriction disappears and the task reduces to a multiparty remote state preparation. Without recognizing this fact, several schemes for broadcasting of known quantum states have been proposed in the recent past and erroneously/misleadingly referred to as protocols for quantum broadcasting (e.g., Yu et al. in Quant Inf Process 16(2):41, 2017 presented a technically correct scheme for multiparty remote state preparation which can at best be referred to as broadcasting of known quantum states, but referred to it as a scheme for quantum broadcasting). Here, we elaborate on the relation between the protocols of remote state preparation and those of broadcasting of known quantum information and show that it is possible to broadcast known quantum information to multiple receivers in deterministic as well as probabilistic manner with optimal resources. Further, the effect of noise on such schemes, and some new facets (like joint broadcasting) of such schemes have been discussed. A proof of principle realization of the proposed optimal scheme using an IBM quantum computer is also reported. Possibilities of generalizations of the so-called broadcasting schemes and potential applications are also discussed with appropriate importance.

No-broadcasting characterizes operational contextuality

Abstract:Operational contextuality forms a rapidly developing subfield of quantum information theory. However, the characterization of the quantum mechanical entities that fuel the phenomenon has remained unknown with many partial results existing. Here, we present a resolution to this problem by connecting operational contextuality one-to-one with the no-broadcasting theorem. The connection works both on the level of full quantum theory and subtheories thereof. We demonstrate the connection in various relevant cases, showing especially that for quantum states the possibility of demonstrating contextuality is exactly characterized by non-commutativity, and for measurements this is done by a norm-1 property closely related to repeatability. Moreover, we show how techniques from broadcasting can be used to simplify known foundational results in contextuality.

Abstract:In this article, we are interested in the physical model of general quantum protocols implementing secure two-party computations in the light of Mayers' and Lo's & Chau's no-go theorems of bit commitment and oblivious transfer. In contrast to the commonly adobted quantum pure two-party model in the literature where classical communication is normally ignored, we propose an alternative interpretation for the purification of classical communication in two-party protocols by introducing a quantum third party for the classical channel. This interpretation leads to a global three-party model, involving Alice's and Bob's machines and the environment coupled to the macroscopic channel, using the decoherence scheme in quantum measurements. This model could give a more general view on the concealing/binding trade-off of quantum bit commitment protocols. Inspired from this three-party interpretation, we extend the no-go theorems for denying some classes of two-party protocols having access to some particular quantum trusted third-parties, known as quantum two-party oracles. The extension implies that a quantum protocol for implementing secure two-party computations musts have access to a trusted third-party which erases information and thus makes dissipation of heat to the environment.

Abstract:Shannon proved that almost all Boolean functions require a circuit of size $\Theta(2^n/n)$. We prove a quantum analog of this classical result. Unlike in the classical case the number of quantum circuits of any fixed size that we allow is uncountably infinite. Our main tool is a classical result in real algebraic geometry bounding the number of realizable sign conditions of any finite set of real polynomials in many variables.

Abstract:Bell nonlocality and steering are archetypal characteristics of quantum mechanics that mark a significant departure from conventional classical notions. They basically refer to the presence of quantum correlations between separated systems which violate a nonlocal inequality, the violation otherwise not possible if we restrict ourselves only to classical correlations. In view of the importance of such unique correlations one may be interested to generate more states exhibiting nonlocality starting from a few, a protocol which is termed as broadcasting. However, in the present submission, we show using universal Buzek-Hillary(BH) quantum cloning machine that, if one restricts to broadcasting through local quantum cloning, then such nonlocality cannot be broadcasted. Our study is done in the purview of the Bell-CHSH inequality and the CJWR (E.G.Cavalcanti,S.J. Jones,H.M Wiseman and M.D. Reid, Phys.Rev.A 80,032112(2009)) steering inequality. It is observed that when number of measurement settings is greater than 6, some of the output states are steerable after the application of local optimal B-H cloners. We find that, under some restrictions, if the Werner and Bell diagonal states are subjected to such procedures, then the resultant state is rendered unsteerable. We extend this study to three qubit systems and find that genuine tripartite nonlocality cannot be broadcasted using universal BH local quantum cloners, when we consider the Svetlichny's inequality. For two qubit systems, we have considered $10^5$ simulated general local unitaries over Werner and Bell-diagonal states and find that for none of these states broadcasting on nonlocality and 3-steerability is possible.

Abstract:Inspired by classical ("actual") Quantum Theory over $\mathbb{C}$ and Modal Quantum Theory (MQT), which is a model of Quantum Theory over certain finite fields, we introduce General Quantum Theory as a Quantum Theory -- in the København interpretation -- over general division rings with involution, in which the inner product "is" a $(\sigma,1)$-Hermitian form $\varphi$. This unites all known such approaches in one and the same theory, and we show that many of the known results such as no-cloning, no-deleting, quantum teleportation and super-dense quantum coding, which are known in classical Quantum Theory over $\mathbb{C}$ and in some MQTs, hold for any General Quantum Theory. On the other hand, in many General Quantum Theories, a geometrical object which we call "quantum kernel" arises, which is invariant under the unitary group $\mathbf{U}(V,\varphi)$, and which carries the geometry of a so-called polar space. We use this object to construct new quantum (teleportation) coding schemes, which mix quantum theory with the geometry of the quantum kernel (and the action of the unitary group). We also show that in characteristic $0$, every General Quantum Theory over an algebraically closed field behaves like classical Quantum Theory over $\mathbb{C}$ at many levels, and that all such theories share one model, which we pin down as the "minimal model," which is countable and defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. Moreover, to make the analogy with classical Quantum Theory even more striking, we show that Born's rule holds in any such theory. So all such theories are not modal at all. Finally, we obtain an extension theory for General Quantum Theories in characteristic $0$ which allows one to extend any such theory over algebraically closed fields (such as classical complex Quantum Theory) to larger theories in which a quantum kernel is present.

Abstract:Quantum broadcasting is central to quantum information processing and characterizes the correlations within quantum states. Nonetheless, traditional quantum broadcasting encounters inherent limitations dictated by the principles of quantum mechanics. In a previous study, Parzygnat et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 132, 110203 (2024)] introduced a canonical broadcasting quantum map that goes beyond the quantum no-broadcasting theorem through a virtual process. In this work, we generalize the concept of virtual broadcasting to unilocal broadcasting by incorporating a reference system and introduce protocols that can be approximated using physical operations with minimal cost. First, we propose a universal unilocal protocol enabling multiple parties to share the correlations of a target bipartite state, which is encoded in the expectation value for any observable. Second, we formalize the simulation cost of a virtual quantum broadcasting protocol into a semidefinite programming problem. Notably, we propose a specific protocol with optimal simulation cost for the 2-broadcasting scenario, revealing an explicit relationship between simulation cost and the quantum system's dimension. Moreover, we establish upper and lower bounds on the simulation cost of the virtual $n$-broadcasting protocol and demonstrate the convergence of the lower bound to the upper bound as the quantum system's dimension increases.

Minimal operational theories: classical theories with quantum features

Abstract:We introduce a class of probabilistic theories where the dynamics of each system is limited to the minimal set of operations consistent with the set of states and allowing for conditional tests. We show that almost all minimal theories with conditioning satisfy two quantum no-go theorems: no-information without disturbance and no-broadcasting. As a relevant example, we construct a minimal toy-theory with conditioning where all systems are classical. The theory does not have incompatible measurements nor preparation uncertainty relations, and it is Kochen-Specker noncontextual, and at the same time it exhibits irreversibility of measurement disturbance, no-information without disturbance and no-broadcasting. This proves that the latter three properties cannot be understood $per se$ as signatures of non-classicality.

Abstract:We study the nonlocality of arbitrary dimensional bipartite quantum states. By computing the maximal violation of a set of multi-setting Bell inequalities, an analytical and computable lower bound has been derived for general two-qubit states. This bound gives the necessary condition that a two-qubit state admits no local hidden variable models. The lower bound is shown to be better than that from the CHSH inequality in judging the nonlocality of some quantum states. The results are generalized to the case of high dimensional quantum states, and a sufficient condition for detecting the non-locality has been presented.

Abstract:We develop a notion of quantum channels that can make states useless for universal quantum computation by destroying their magic (non-stabilizerness) - we refer to them as magic-breaking channels. We establish the properties of these channels in arbitrary dimensions. We prove the necessary and sufficient criteria for qubit channels to be magic-breaking and present an algorithm for determining the same. Moreover, we provide compact criteria in terms of the parameters for several classes of qubit channels to be magic-breaking under various post-processing operations. Further, we investigate the necessary and sufficient conditions for the tensor product of multiple qubit channels to be magic-breaking. We establish implications of the same for the dynamical resource theory of magic preservability.

Quantum Simultaneous Protocols without Public Coins using Modified Equality Queries

Abstract:In this paper we study a quantum version of the multiparty simultaneous message-passing (SMP) model, and we show that in some cases, quantum communication can replace public randomness, even with no entanglement between the parties. This was already known for two players, but not for more than two players, and indeed, so far all that was known was a negative result. Our main technical contribution is a compiler that takes any classical public-coin simultaneous protocol based on "modified equality queries," and converts it into a quantum simultaneous protocol without public coins with roughly the same communication complexity. We then use our compiler to derive protocols for several problems, including frequency moments, neighborhood diversity, enumeration of isolated cliques, and more.

Abstract:Analyzing shareability of correlations arising in any physical theory may be considered as a fruitful technique of studying the theory. Our present topic of discussion involves an analogous approach of studying quantum theory. For our purpose, we have deviated from the usual procedure of assessing monogamous nature of quantum correlations in standard Bell-CHSH scenario. We have considered correlations arising in a quantum network involving independent sources. Precisely speaking, we have analyzed monogamy of nonbilocal correlations by deriving a relation restricting marginals. Interestingly, restrictions constraining distribution of nonbilocal correlations remain same irrespective of whether inputs of the nodal observers are kept fixed(in different bilocal networks) while studying nonbilocal nature of marginal correlations.

Three-Receiver Quantum Broadcast Channels: Classical Communication with Quantum Non-unique Decoding

Abstract:In network communication, it is common in broadcasting scenarios for there to exist a hierarchy among receivers based on information they decode due, for example, to different physical conditions or premium subscriptions. This hierarchy may result in varied information quality, such as higher-quality video for certain receivers. This is modeled mathematically as a degraded message set, indicating a hierarchy between messages to be decoded by different receivers, where the default quality corresponds to a common message intended for all receivers, a higher quality is represented by a message for a smaller subset of receivers, and so forth. We extend these considerations to quantum communication, exploring three-receiver quantum broadcast channels with two- and three-degraded message sets. Our technical tool involves employing quantum non-unique decoding, a technique we develop by utilizing the simultaneous pinching method. We construct one-shot codes for various scenarios and find achievable rate regions relying on various quantum Rényi mutual information error exponents. Our investigation includes a comprehensive study of pinching across tensor product spaces, presenting our findings as the asymptotic counterpart to our one-shot codes. By employing the non-unique decoding, we also establish a simpler proof to Marton's inner bound for two-receiver quantum broadcast channels without the need for more involved techniques. Additionally, we derive no-go results and demonstrate their tightness in special cases.

Abstract:We explore finite-field frameworks for quantum theory and quantum computation. The simplest theory, defined over unrestricted finite fields, is unnaturally strong. A second framework employs only finite fields with no solution to x^2+1=0, and thus permits an elegant complex representation of the extended field by adjoining i=\sqrt{-1}. Quantum theories over these fields recover much of the structure of conventional quantum theory except for the condition that vanishing inner products arise only from null states; unnaturally strong computational power may still occur. Finally, we are led to consider one more framework, with further restrictions on the finite fields, that recovers a local transitive order and a locally-consistent notion of inner product with a new notion of cardinal probability. In this framework, conventional quantum mechanics and quantum computation emerge locally (though not globally) as the size of the underlying field increases. Interestingly, the framework allows one to choose separate finite fields for system description and for measurement: the size of the first field quantifies the resources needed to describe the system and the size of the second quantifies the resources used by the observer. This resource-based perspective potentially provides insights into quantitative measures for actual computational power, the complexity of quantum system definition and evolution, and the independent question of the cost of the measurement process.
