Abstract:Elastic constants of zero-temperature amorphous solids are given as the difference between the Born term, which results from a hypothetical affine deformation of an amorphous solid, and a correction term which originates from the fact that the deformation of an amorphous solid due to an applied stress is, at the microscopic level, non-affine. Both terms are non-negative and thus it is a priori not obvious that the resulting elastic constants are non-negative. In particular, theories that approximate the correction term may spuriously predict negative elastic constants and thus an instability of an amorphous solid. Here we derive alternative expressions for elastic constants of zero-temperature amorphous solids that are explicitly non-negative. These expressions provide a useful blueprint for approximate theories for elastic constants and sound damping in zero temperature amorphous solids.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper is primarily dedicated to addressing the problem of calculating elastic constants in zero-temperature amorphous solids and proposes a new expression to ensure that these elastic constants are non-negative. The core issue of the paper is that existing theoretical approximation methods may lead to unreasonable negative value predictions when estimating the elastic constants of amorphous solids, which implies instability of the material. This is because elastic constants are typically expressed as the difference between a Born term and a correction term (non-affine term), both of which are non-negative. Therefore, in some cases, if the correction term is overestimated, it may result in a negative total elastic constant, which is physically unacceptable. The authors aim to derive new expressions for the elastic constants that explicitly guarantee the non-negativity of the elastic constants. To this end, the authors propose new formulas to describe the squared sound speeds in zero-temperature amorphous solids, which are explicitly non-negative. Specifically, the new expressions represent the elastic constants as the ratio of the square of the Born term to the sum of the Born term and a new non-affine correction term. The paper first introduces the background knowledge, including the non-affine characteristics of the displacement field in amorphous solids and how the system's response to external perturbations can be described through the Hessian matrix. Then, the authors re-derive the standard expressions for elastic constants and point out the potential issues within them. Through a series of mathematical transformations, the authors derive new expressions and demonstrate that the relevant matrices in these expressions are positive definite, thereby ensuring that the resulting elastic constants are always non-negative. In summary, this paper provides a new perspective on the calculation of elastic constants in zero-temperature amorphous solids, and the proposed method is expected to improve the understanding and description of the properties of such materials.
