Abstract:This chapter introduces the thermal conductivity of a novel one-dimensional carbon nanostructure - diamond nanothread. It starts by introducing the family of the diamond nanothread as acquired from density functional theory calculations and also its successful experimental synthesisation. It then briefs the mechanical properties of the diamond nanothreads as a fundamental for their engineering applications. After that, it focuses on the thermal transport properties of the diamond nanothreads by examining the influences from various parameters such as size, geometry, and temperature. Then, the application of diamond nanothread as reinforcements for nanocomposites is discussed. By the end of the chapter, future directions and their potential applications are discussed.

Abstract:In this article, we follow the framework given in the article {\it Physica A}, \textbf{158}, pg 58-63 (1989) by R. Laflamme to derive the thermofield double state for a causal diamond using the Euclidean path integral formalism, and subsequently derive the causal diamond temperature. The interpretation of the physical and fictitious system in the thermofield double state arises naturally from the boundary conditions of the fields defined on the Euclidean sections of the cylindrical background geometry $S^{1}_{\beta}\times \mathbb{R}$, where $\beta$ defines the periodicity of the Euclidean time coordinate and $S^{1}_{\beta}$ is a circumference of length $\beta$. The temperature detected by a static diamond observer at $x=0$ matches with the thermofield double temperature derived via this path integral procedure.

Abstract:We show that the particle-number distribution of diamond modes, modes that are localized in a finite space-time region, are thermal for the Minkowski vacuum state of a massless scalar field, an analogue to the Unruh effect. The temperature of the diamond is inversely proportional to its size. An inertial observer can detect this thermal radiation by coupling to the diamond modes using an appropriate energy-scaled detector. We further investigate the correlations between various diamonds and find that entanglement between adjacent diamonds dominates.

Abstract:Causal diamonds are known to have thermal behavior that can be probed by finite-lifetime observers equipped with energy-scaled detectors. This thermality can be attributed to the time evolution of observers within the causal diamond, governed by one of the conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) symmetry generators: the noncompact hyperbolic operator $S$. In this paper, we show that the unbounded nature of $S$ endows it with a quantum instability, which is a generalization of a similar property exhibited by the inverted harmonic oscillator potential. Our analysis is semiclassical, including a detailed phase-space study of the classical dynamics of $S$ and its dual operator $R$, and a general semiclassical framework yielding basic instability and thermality properties that play a crucial role in the quantum behavior of the theory. For an observer with a finite lifetime $\mathcal{T}$, the detected temperature $T_D = 2 \hbar/(\pi \mathcal{T})$ is associated with a Lyapunov exponent $\lambda_L = \pi T_D/\hbar$, which is half the upper saturation bound of the information scrambling rate.

Abstract:Recently it was suggested that the Unruh effect might occur in metamaterials at accessible Unruh temperatures. In some cases, the class of metamaterials that may be useful for this observation has a Klein instead of a Minkowski signature. Thus, confirmation of this effect in those materials requires more careful analysis. In this paper, we use the path integral formulation of Quantum Field Theory to investigate the analogous to the Unruh effect in Kleinian geometry. We calculate the analogous of the Unruh temperature for a scalar theory, provided we restrict the action in a convenient subspace of the Kleinian spacetime. As a consequence, we obtain the diamond temperature for a static observer with a finite lifetime. The result suggest metamaterials as a possible system to observe diamond regions.

The double-scaled limit of SYK is a concrete model in which we can examine and explain these different concepts of temperature. This note began as an addendum to our paper ``Comments on a Paper by Narovlansky and Verlinde" but in the process of writing it we learned new things -- interesting in their own right -- that we wish to report here.

Abstract:This study reveals a novel phenomenon demonstrating the elastic softening of synthetic diamonds when cooled to very low temperatures below 1 K. We present the results of ultrasonic measurements of single-crystalline synthetic diamonds without irradiation, namely type-IIa (colorless) and Ib (yellow) diamonds grown by high-pressure-high-temperature synthesis as well as type-IIa diamond grown by chemical vapor deposition. We observed a divergent decrease of the elastic stiffness constant $C_{44}$ in all samples at low temperatures down to 20 mK. We argue for the existence of electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom with irreducible representation $T_2$ in diamond as the origin of this elastic softening. The possible ground state preserves local $T_d$ symmetry presumably down to absolute zero. Of the ground states of atomic vacancies in diamond proposed thus far, the only relevant one is the positively charged single atomic vacancy V$^+$, which has not been observed in previous optical measurements in diamonds.

Abstract:The specific heat of S = 1/2 frustrated diamond-spin chain has been examined by means of the Green's function theory combined with the Jordan-Wigner transformation, and the particular emphasis is laid on the investigation of the effect of geometric frustration, which is generated by the competition between the exchange interactions along the spin chain. lt is found that the interplay between the geometric frustration and quantum effects gives rise to non-trivial behaviors in the curves of the specific heat: in the absence of the external magnetic field, the temperature dependence of the specific heat shows a double-peak structure for different strength of the frustration, and in the presence of the external field, the curves of the specific heat display as a three-peak structure due to the field-induced splitting of the energy levels related to the frustrated spins, which are in good agreement with the exact analytical approach based on the generalized decoration-iteration map method. Anomalous Thermal Response of Bulk Diamond to Uniaxial (100) Strain: A First-Principles Prediction

Abstract:Diamond, a material that exhibits ultrahigh thermal conductivity with a sensitive thermal response to stress, is an ideal heat-sink material in the embedded cooling paradigm. This study uses first-principles calculations with the phonon Boltzmann transport equation to predict the variation rules of the thermal conductivity of diamond along the < 100 > crystal direction under strains at three orders of magnitude: 0.1%, 1%, and 10.5%. Density functional theory is used to predict the stress-strain dependence of diamond and the temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of unstrained diamond. The predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results. The calculated uniaxial strain-thermal conductivity dependence results reveal that the thermal conductivity of diamond abnormally increases by approximately 15% under small-scale uniaxial strain because of the weakened anharmonic interatomic force constants. Under large-scale strain, the thermal conductivity considerably decreases because of reduced phonon group velocities and increased numbers of phonon scattering channels. The findings in this study will guide analyses of the dependence of thermal conductivity on strain in other diamondlike structures, such as Group IV element-based materials. The abnormal thermal response at small strain is expected to lead to the realization of an artificial thermal conduction channel.
Selective temperature sensing in nanodiamonds using dressed states

Abstract:Temperature sensing at the nanoscale is a significant experimental challenge. Here, we report an approach using dressed states to make a leading quantum sensor (the nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond) selectively sensitive to temperature, even in the presence of normally-confounding magnetic fields. Using an experimentally straightforward approach, we are able to suppress the magnetic sensitivity of the NV center by a factor of seven while retaining full temperature sensitivity and narrowing the NV center linewidth. These results demonstrate the power of engineering the sensor Hamiltonian using external control fields to enable sensing with improved specificity to target signals.

Abstract:Among all materials, mono-crystalline diamond has one of the highest measured thermal conductivities, with values above 2000 W/m/K at room temperature. This stems from momentum-conserving `normal' phonon-phonon scattering processes dominating over momentum-dissipating `Umklapp' processes, a feature that also suggests diamond as an ideal platform to experimentally investigate phonon heat transport phenomena that violate Fourier's law. Here, we introduce dilute nitrogen-vacancy color centers as in-situ, highly precise spin defect thermometers to image temperature inhomogeneities in single-crystal diamond microstructures heated from ambient conditions. We analyze cantilevers with cross-sections in the range from about 0.2 to 2.6 $\mathrm{\mu m}^2$, observing a relation between cross-section and heat flux that departs from Fourier's law predictions. We rationalize such behavior relying on first-principles simulations based on the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport equation, also discussing how fabrication-induced impurities influence conduction. Our temperature-imaging method can be applied to diamond devices of arbitrary geometry, paving the way for the exploration of unconventional, non-diffusive heat transport phenomena.

A physically motivated analytical expression for the temperature dependence of the zero-field splitting of the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond

Abstract:The temperature dependence of the zero-field splitting (ZFS) between the $|m_{s}=0\rangle$ and $|m_{s}=\pm 1\rangle$ levels of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center's electronic ground-state spin triplet can be used as a robust nanoscale thermometer in a broad range of environments. However, despite numerous measurements of this dependence in different temperature ranges, to our knowledge no analytical expression has been put forward that captures the scaling of the ZFS of the NV center across all relevant temperatures. Here we present a simple, analytical, and physically motivated expression for the temperature dependence of the NV center's ZFS that matches all experimental observations, in which the ZFS shifts in proportion to the occupation numbers of two representative phonon modes. In contrast to prior models our expression does not diverge outside the regions of fitting. We show that our model quantitatively matches experimental measurements of the ZFS from 15 to 500 K in single NV centers in ultra-pure bulk diamond, and we compare our model and measurements to prior models and experimental data.

The Relative Thermodynamic Stability of Diamond and Graphite

Abstract:Recent density-functional theory (DFT) calculations raised the possibility that diamond could be degenerate with graphite at very low temperatures. Through high-accuracy calorimetric experiments closing gaps in available data, we reinvestigate the relative thermodynamic stability of diamond and graphite. For T<400 K, graphite is always more stable than diamond at ambient pressure. At low temperatures, the stability is enthalpically driven, and entropy terms add to the stability at higher temperatures. We also carried out DFT calculations: B86bPBE-25X-XDM//B86bPBE-XDM and PBE0-XDM//PBE-XDM results overlap with the experimental -TΔS results and bracket the experimental values of ΔH and ΔG, displaced by only about 2× the experimental uncertainty. Revised values of the standard thermodynamic functions for diamond are Δf Ho =-2150±150 J mol-1 , Δf So =3.44±0.03 J K-1 mol-1 and Δf Go =-3170±150 J mol-1 .

Abstract:The temperature sensibility of amorphous diamond (a-D) films deposited with the filtered cathodic vacuum are technology was investigated in the range of -190-600 degrees C. The samples cooled by liquid nitrogen pump were in situ measured on a Linkam stage and the samples for thermal stability were heated in a furnace. The microstructure and mechanical properties were respectively examined by visible Raman spectroscopy and a nanoindenter. The results show that a-D films have better thermal stability in air, they can hold their hardness up to 400 degrees C and hold their structure up to 500 degrees C. However, the complete material loss takes place at about 600 degrees C. Raman measurements show an apparent shift of the G-peak frequency to higher values with increasing annealing temperatures. The films are not sensitive to lower temperatures. The microstucture of the films remains stable as temperatures are decreased to -190 degrees C.
Zero temperature phase transitions and their anomalous influence on thermodynamic behavior in the q-state Potts model on a diamond chain

Abstract:The q-state Potts model on a diamond chain has mathematical significance in analyzing phase transitions and critical behaviors in diverse fields, including statistical physics, condensed matter physics, and materials science. By focusing on the 3-state Potts model on a diamond chain, we reveal rich and analytically solvable behaviors without phase transitions at finite temperatures. Upon investigating thermodynamic properties such as internal energy, entropy, specific heat, and correlation length, we observe sharp changes near zero temperature. Magnetic properties, including magnetization and magnetic susceptibility, display distinct behaviors that provide insights into spin configurations in different phases. However, the Potts model lacks genuine phase transitions at finite temperatures, in line with the Peierls argument for one-dimensional systems. Nonetheless, in the general case of an arbitrary $q$-state, magnetic properties such as correlation length, magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility exhibit intriguing remnants of a zero-temperature phase transition at finite temperatures. Furthermore, residual entropy uncovers unusual frustrated regions at zero-temperature phase transitions. This feature leads to the peculiar thermodynamic properties of phase boundaries, including a sharp entropy change resembling a first-order discontinuity without an entropy jump, and pronounced peaks in second-order derivatives of free energy, suggestive of a second-order phase transition divergence, but without singularities. This unusual behavior is also observed in the correlation length at the pseudo-critical temperature, which could potentially be misleading as a divergence.

Abstract:Temperature measurements in particle simulations must account for the reduction in degrees of freedom (DoF) due to constraints. However, when local temperature is measured, e.g. from a set of particles in a subvolume or from velocities projected onto one Cartesian direction, the result can appear to unphysically violate equipartition if the local DoF are not correctly calculated. Here we provide a self-consistent method for calculating the DoF for an arbitrary local kinetic temperature measurement.

Abstract:The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the diamond-decorated square lattice in the presence of a magnetic field displays various quantum phases including the Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic, dimer-tetramer, monomer-dimer, and spin-canted phases, in addition to the trivial fully saturated state. Thermodynamic properties of this model are investigated using several complementary analytical and numerical methods such as exact diagonalization up to the systems of 40 spins, an effective monomer-dimer description, sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations for up to 180 spins, and a decoupling approximation. Our particular attention is focused on the parameter region favoring the dimer-tetramer phase. This ground state can be represented by a classical hard-dimer model on the square lattice and retains a macroscopic degeneracy even under a magnetic field. However, the description of the low-temperature thermodynamics close to the boundary between the macroscopically degenerate dimer-tetramer and the non-degenerate monomer-dimer phases requires an extended classical monomer-dimer lattice-gas model. Anomalous thermodynamic properties emerging in the vicinity of the dimer-tetramer phase are studied in detail. Under the adiabatic demagnetization we detect an enhanced magnetocaloric effect promoting an efficient cooling to absolute zero temperature, provided that the system reaches the dimer-tetramer ground state at zero field.

Abstract:Understanding temperature-dependent hardness of covalent materials is not only of fundamental scientific interest, but also of crucial importance for technical applications. In this work, a temperature-dependent hardness formula for diamond-structured covalent materials is constructed on the basis of the dislocation theory. Our results show that, at low temperature, the Vickers hardness is mainly controlled by Poisson's ratio and shear modulus with the latter playing a dominant role. With increasing temperature, the plastic deformation mechanism undergoes a transition from shuffle-set dislocation control to glide-set dislocation control, leading to a steeper drop of hardness at high temperature. In addition, an intrinsic parameter, a3G, is revealed for diamond-structured covalent materials, which measures the resistance to soften at high temperature. Our hardness model shows remarkable agreement with experimental data. Current work not only sheds lights on the physical origin of hardness, but also provides a direct principle for superhard materials design.

Abstract:Nitrogen-Vacancy centers in diamond possess an electronic spin resonance that strongly depends on temperature, which makes them efficient temperature sensor with a sensitivity down to a few mK/$\sqrt{\rm Hz}$. However, the high thermal conductivity of the host diamond may strongly damp any temperature variations, leading to invasive measurements when probing local temperature distributions. In view of determining possible and optimal configurations for diamond-based wide-field thermal imaging, we here investigate, both experimentally and numerically, the effect of the presence of diamond on microscale temperature distributions. Three geometrical configurations are studied: a bulk diamond substrate, a thin diamond layer bonded on quartz and diamond nanoparticles dispersed on quartz. We show that the use of bulk diamond substrates for thermal imaging is highly invasive, in the sense that it prevents any substantial temperature increase. Conversely, thin diamond layers partly solve this issue and could provide a possible alternative for microscale thermal imaging. Dispersions of diamond nanoparticles throughout the sample appear as the most relevant approach as they do not affect the temperature distribution, although NV centers in nanodiamonds yield lower temperature sensitivities compared to bulk diamond.
