Abstract:This research project seeks to investigate the incorporation of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology with human-computer interaction (HCI) in order to revitalize the Silk Road - specifically in Kermanshah, Iran - and its effect on cultural tourism. Kermanshah has underexplored the rich historical significance of the Silk Road, despite the presence of 24 UNESCO World Heritage sites. From the 2nd century BCE to the 18th century CE, the Silk Road was a vital trade route connecting the West and the East and had enormous cultural, economic, religious, and political effects. The purpose of this study is to examine the application of AR/VR technologies in HCI for the preservation, interpretation, and promotion of the Silk Road's tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Kermanshah, as well as their impact on cultural tourism development. The study also investigates how these innovative technologies can enhance visitors' experiences through immersive and interactive approaches, promote sustainable tourism practices, and contribute to the region's broader socioeconomic benefits. The research will analyze the challenges and opportunities of implementing AR/VR technology in HCI within the context of cultural heritage and tourism in Kermanshah and the Silk Road region more broadly. By combining HCI, AR/VR, and cultural tourism, this research seeks to provide valuable insights into the development of user-centered, immersive experiences that promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Silk Road's distinctive cultural heritage.
Human-Computer Interaction
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to explore how to utilize Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in combination with Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) to revive the Silk Road in the Kermanshah region of Iran and study its impact on cultural tourism. Although the Kermanshah region boasts 24 UNESCO World Heritage sites, its historical connection with the Silk Road has not been fully developed. The Silk Road, as an important trade route connecting the East and the West, had a profound impact on culture, economy, religion, and politics from the 2nd century BCE to the 18th century CE. The research focuses on analyzing the application of AR/VR technologies in the preservation, interpretation, and promotion of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Silk Road, and how these technologies can enhance visitor experiences through immersive and interactive means, promote sustainable tourism practices, and bring broader socio-economic benefits to the region. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges and opportunities of implementing AR/VR technologies in the context of cultural heritage and tourism. The three main research questions of the paper are: 1. What is the current status of cultural heritage on the Silk Road in Iran? 2. Can the Silk Road become a tourist attraction in Iran? 3. How to protect the historically significant sites along this ancient route that are difficult to reconstruct? The paper emphasizes the historical importance of the Silk Road, not only as a trade route but also as a bridge for cultural exchange and integration, promoting dialogue and unity between different regions. Since the late 19th century, the Silk Road has attracted the attention of historical research, and by the 1990s, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) called for the revitalization of the Silk Road through culture and tourism. The paper also mentions the role of international organizations such as UNESCO in the Silk Road revival projects, including designating parts of it as World Heritage sites and formulating related action plans. The paper selects the city of Kermanshah in Iran as a case study. This region not only has rich prehistoric sites but is also an important node on the Silk Road. The paper provides a detailed introduction to the archaeological discoveries in the region from prehistoric times to the Islamic period, as well as famous historical sites such as the Behistun Inscription, Taq-e Bostan rock reliefs, and the Bisotun Palace. These sites reflect the splendor of ancient civilizations and showcase the cultural diversity along the Silk Road. In summary, the paper aims to explore innovative methods to revive the cultural tourism of the Silk Road by combining AR/VR technologies and human-computer interaction, while also protecting and preserving its unique historical and cultural heritage.
