Abstract:We introduce a strategy to tackle some known obstructions of current approaches to the Fourier uniformity conjecture. Assuming GRH, we then show the conjecture holds for intervals of length at least $(\log X)^{\psi(X)}$, with $\psi(X) \rightarrow \infty$ an arbitrarily slowly growing function of $X$. We expect the methods should adapt to nilsequences, thus also showing that the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis implies close to exponential growth in the sign patterns of the Liouville function.

Abstract:This paper concerns the problem of phase retrieval from Fourier measurements with random masks. Here we focus on researching two kinds of random masks. Firstly, we utilize the Fourier measurements with real masks to estimate a general signal \begin{document}$ \mathit{\boldsymbol{x}}_0\in \mathbb{R}^d $\end{document} in noiseless case when \begin{document}$ d $\end{document} is even. It is demonstrated that \begin{document}$ O(\log^2d) $\end{document} real random masks are able to ensure accurate recovery of \begin{document}$ \mathit{\boldsymbol{x}}_0 $\end{document}. Then we find that such real masks are not adaptable to reconstruct complex signals of even dimension. Subsequently, we prove that \begin{document}$ O(\log^4d) $\end{document} complex masks are enough to stably estimate a general signal \begin{document}$ \mathit{\boldsymbol{x}}_0\in \mathbb{C}^d $\end{document} under bounded noise interference, which extends E. Candès et al.'s work. Meanwhile, we establish tighter error estimations for real signals of even dimensions or complex signals of odd dimensions by using \begin{document}$ O(\log^2d) $\end{document} real masks. Finally, we intend to tackle with the noisy phase problem about an \begin{document}$ s $\end{document}-sparse signal by a robust and efficient approach, namely, two-stage algorithm. Based on the stable guarantees for general signals, we show that the \begin{document}$ s $\end{document}-sparse signal \begin{document}$ \mathit{\boldsymbol{x}}_0 $\end{document} can be stably recovered from composite measurements under near-optimal sample complexity up to a \begin{document}$ \log $\end{document} factor, namely, \begin{document}$ O(s\log(\frac{ed}{s})\log^4(s\log(\frac{ed}{s}))) $\end{document}
A phase-space approach to weighted Fourier extension inequalities

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to expose and investigate natural phase-space formulations of two longstanding problems in the restriction theory of the Fourier transform. These problems, often referred to as the Stein and Mizohata--Takeuchi conjectures, assert that Fourier extension operators associated with rather general (codimension 1) submanifolds of euclidean space, may be effectively controlled by the classical X-ray transform via weighted $L^2$ inequalities. Our phase-space formulations, which have their origins in recent work of Dendrinos, Mustata and Vitturi, expose close connections with a conjecture of Flandrin from time-frequency analysis, and rest on the identification of an explicit "geometric" Wigner transform associated with an arbitrary (smooth strictly convex) submanifold $S$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our main results are certain natural "Sobolev variants" of the Stein and Mizohata--Takeuchi conjectures, and involve estimating the Sobolev norms of such Wigner transforms by geometric forms of classical bilinear fractional integrals. Our broad geometric framework allows us to explore the role of the curvature of the submanifold in these problems, and in particular we obtain bounds that are independent of any lower bound on the curvature; a feature that is uncommon in the wider restriction theory of the Fourier transform. Finally, we provide a further illustration of the effectiveness of our analysis by establishing a form of Flandrin's conjecture in the plane with an $\varepsilon$-loss. While our perspective comes primarily from euclidean harmonic analysis, the procedure used for constructing phase-space representations of extension operators is well-known in optics.

On the local Fourier uniformity problem for small sets

Abstract:We consider vanishing properties of exponential sums of the Liouville function $\lambda$ of the form $$ \lim_{H\to\infty}\limsup_{X\to\infty}\frac{1}{\log X}\sum_{m\leq X}\frac{1}{m}\sup_{\alpha\in C}\bigg|\frac{1}{H}\sum_{h\leq H}\lambda(m+h)e^{2\pi ih\alpha}\bigg|=0, $$ where $C\subset\mathbb{T}$. The case $C=\mathbb{T}$ corresponds to the local $1$-Fourier uniformity conjecture of Tao, a central open problem in the study of multiplicative functions with far-reaching number-theoretic applications. We show that the above holds for any closed set $C\subset\mathbb{T}$ of zero Lebesgue measure. Moreover, we prove that extending this to any set $C$ with non-empty interior is equivalent to the $C=\mathbb{T}$ case, which shows that our results are essentially optimal without resolving the full conjecture. We also consider higher-order variants. We prove that if the linear phase $e^{2\pi ih\alpha}$ is replaced by a polynomial phase $e^{2\pi ih^t\alpha}$ for $t\geq 2$ then the statement remains true for any set $C$ of upper box-counting dimension $<1/t$. The statement also remains true if the supremum over linear phases is replaced with a supremum over all nilsequences coming form a compact countable ergodic subsets of any $t$-step nilpotent Lie group. Furthermore, we discuss the unweighted version of the local $1$-Fourier uniformity problem, showing its validity for a class of ``rigid'' sets (of full Hausdorff dimension) and proving a density result for all closed subsets of zero Lebesgue measure.

Abstract:We prove a probabilistic Fourier extension theorem that says Fourier extension holds when averaged over certain smooth Alpert multipliers. The proofs use smooth Alpert wavelets with the classical techniques of stationary phase and interpolation of L^2 and L^4 estimates. The correct L^4 bounds for resonant forms require an expectation over Alpert multipliers.

Abstract:We give an exposition of some connections between Fourier optimization problems and problems in number theory. In particular, we present some recent conditional bounds under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, achieved via a Fourier optimization framework, on bounding the maximum possible gap between consecutive prime numbers represented by a given quadratic form; and on bounding the least quadratic non-residue modulo a prime number. This is based on joint works with Emanuel Carneiro, Andrés Chirre, Micah Milinovich, and Antonio Pedro Ramos.

Quantum Harmonic Analysis on locally compact abelian groups

Abstract:We extend the notions of quantum harmonic analysis, as introduced in [48], to abelian phase spaces, by which we mean a locally compact abelian group endowed with a Heisenberg multiplier. In this way, we obtain a joint harmonic analysis of functions and operators for each such phase space. For all this, we spend significant extra effort to include also phase spaces which are not second countable. We obtain most results from [48] for these general phase spaces, up to Wiener's approximation theorem for operators. As an addition, we extend certain of those results (most notably Wiener's approximation theorem) to operators acting on certain coorbit spaces affiliated with the phase space.

Abstract:An operator generalisation of the notion of geometric phase has been recently proposed purely based on physical grounds. Here we provide a mathematical foundation for its existence, while uncovering new geometrical structures in quantum systems. While probing the average of any observable it is found that a quantum system exhibits different ray spaces and associated fibre bundle structures. The generalised geometric phase is understood as (an)holonomy of a connection over these fibre bundles. The underlying ray spaces in general are found to be pseudo-Kahler manifolds, and its symplectic structure gets manifests as the generalised geometric phase.

Phase time and Ehrenfest's theorem in relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum gravity

Abstract:We revisit the concept of phase time, which has been previously proposed as a solution to the problem of time in quantum gravity. Concretely, we show how the geometry of configuration space together with the phase of the wave function of the universe can, under certain conditions, lead to the definition of a positive-definite inner product from which probabilities can be defined. The norm is conserved under time evolution, and we obtain a version of Ehrenfest's theorem that is analogous to the one in ordinary quantum mechanics. We address how the present approach avoids some difficulties that were encountered in previous attempts at defining an Ehrenfest theorem relative to phase time in the context of relativistic quantum mechanics and canonical quantum gravity, and how it is connected to a notion of gauge fixing the inner product. We conclude with a brief outlook.

Abstract:We study a fluid of two-dimensional parallel hard squares in bulk and under confinement in channels, with the aim of evaluating the performance of Fundamental-Measure Theory (FMT). To this purpose, we first analyse the phase behaviour of the bulk system using FMT and Percus-Yevick theory, and compare the results with MD and MC simulations. In a second step, we study the confined system and check the results against those obtained from Transfer Matrix Method and from our own Monte Carlo simulations. Squares are confined to channels with parallel walls at angles of 0$^{\circ}$ or 45$^{\circ}$ relative to the diagonals of the parallel hard squares, respectively, which allows for an assessment of the effect of the external-potential symmetry on the fluid structural properties. In general FMT overestimates bulk correlations, predicting the existence of a columnar phase (absent in simulations) prior to crystallisation. The equation of state predicted by FMT compares well with simulations, although the PY approach with the virial route is better in some range of packing fractions. The FMT is highly accurate for the structure and correlations of the confined fluid due to the dimensional crossover property fulfilled by the theory. Both density profiles and equations of state of the confined system are accurately predicted by the theory. The highly non-uniform pair correlations inside the channel are also very well described by FMT.

Abstract:We apply Milne's phase-amplitude representation [W. E. Milne, Phys. Rev. 35, 863 (1930)] to a scattering problem involving disjoint classically allowed regions separated by a barrier. Specifically, we develop a formalism employing different sets of amplitude and phase functions --- each set of solutions optimized for a separate region --- and we use these locally adapted solutions to obtain the true value of the scattering phase shift and accurate tunneling rates for ultra-narrow shape resonances. We show results for an illustrative example of an attractive potential with a large centrifugal barrier.

On Fourier Asymptotics and Effective Equidistribution

Abstract:We prove effective equidistribution of expanding horocycles in $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ with respect to various classes of Borel probability measures on $\mathbb{R}$ having certain Fourier asymptotics. Our proof involves new techniques combining tools from automorphic forms and harmonic analysis. In particular, we prove effective equidistribution with respect to the Hausdorff measures on certain shifted, possibly irrational, missing digit Cantor sets, whose Hausdorff dimensions can be as small as 0.61. This improves upon the dimension and rationality restrictions of the recent breakthrough of Khalil--Luethi [Invent. Math]. As an application in Diophantine approximation, a complete Khintchine's theorem follows for a large class of self-similar measures extending a groundbreaking work of Yu [arXiv, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2101.05910" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2101.05910">2101.05910</a>].

Abstract:We study higher uniformity properties of the von Mangoldt function $\Lambda$, the Möbius function $\mu$, and the divisor functions $d_k$ on short intervals $(x,x+H]$ for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$. Let $\Lambda^\sharp$ and $d_k^\sharp$ be suitable approximants of $\Lambda$ and $d_k$, $G/\Gamma$ a filtered nilmanifold, and $F\colon G/\Gamma \to \mathbb{C}$ a Lipschitz function. Then our results imply for instance that when $X^{1/3+\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X$ we have, for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$, \[ \sup_{g \in \text{Poly}(\mathbb{Z} \to G)} \left| \sum_{x < n \leq x+H} (\Lambda(n)-\Lambda^\sharp(n)) \overline{F}(g(n)\Gamma) \right| \ll H\log^{-A} X \] for any fixed $A>0$, and that when $X^{\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X$ we have, for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$, \[ \sup_{g \in \text{Poly}(\mathbb{Z} \to G)} \left| \sum_{x < n \leq x+H} (d_k(n)-d_k^\sharp(n)) \overline{F}(g(n)\Gamma) \right| = o(H \log^{k-1} X). \] As a consequence, we show that the short interval Gowers norms $\|\Lambda-\Lambda^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ and $\|d_k-d_k^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ are also asymptotically small for any fixed $s$ in the same ranges of $H$. This in turn allows us to establish the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture and the divisor correlation conjecture with a short average over one variable. Our main new ingredients are type $II$ estimates obtained by developing a "contagion lemma" for nilsequences and then using this to "scale up" an approximate functional equation for the nilsequence to a larger scale. This extends an approach developed by Walsh for Fourier uniformity.

Geometric phases in generalized radical Floquet dynamics

Abstract:The Pancharatnam phase is a generalization of the Berry phase that applies to discrete sequences of quantum states. Here, we show that the Pancharatnam phase is a natural invariant for a wide class of quantum many-body dynamics involving measurements. We specifically investigate how a non-trivial Pancharatnam phase arises in the trajectories of Floquet quantum error-correcting codes and show that this phase can be extracted in a "computationally-assisted" interferometry protocol, involving additional post-processing based on the measurement record that defines a given quantum many-body trajectory. This Pancharatnam phase can also be directly related to the Berry phase accrued by continuous unitary evolution within a gapped phase. For the $\mathbb Z_2$ Floquet code of Hastings and Haah, we show that the associated family of unitary evolutions is the radical chiral Floquet phase. We demonstrate this correspondence explicitly by studying an exactly-solvable model of interacting spins.

Abstract:We analyze the behavior of a non-Hermitian opened one-dimensional quantum system with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. This system is built by a dimer, with balanced gains and losses described by a parameter $\gamma$. By varying $\gamma$ the system resonances, which are naturally separated, coalesce at the exceptional point (EP). The transmission spectrum is obtained by means of the scattering matrix ($S$ matrix) formalism and we examine the wave functions corresponding to the resonances as a function of $\gamma$. Specifically, we look for the behavior and distribution of the phases of the $S$ matrix before, at and after the EP.

Abstract:Several problems on Fourier series and trigonometric approximation on a hexagon and a triangle are studied. The results include Abel and Cesàro summability of Fourier series, degree of approximation and best approximation by trigonometric functions, both direct and inverse theorems. One of the objective of this study is to demonstrate that Fourier series on spectral sets enjoy a rich structure that allow an extensive theory for Fourier expansions and approximation.

Stable Gabor phase retrieval for multivariate functions. Journal of the European Mathematical Society (2021)] the instabilities of Gabor phase retrieval problem, i.e. reconstructing $ f\in L^2(\mathbb{R})$ from its spectrogram $|\mathcal{V}_g f|$ where $$\mathcal{V}_g f(x,\xi) = \int_{\mathbb{R}} f(t)\overline{g(t-x)}e^{-2\pi i \xi t}\,\mbox{d}t,$$ have been classified in terms of the connectivity of the measurements. These findings were however crucially restricted to the case where the window $g(t)=e^{-\pi t^2}$ is Gaussian. In this work we establish a corresponding result for a number of other window functions including the one-sided exponential $g(t)=e^{-t}\mathbb{1}_{[0,\infty)}(t)$ and $g(t)=\exp(t-e^t)$. As a by-product we establish a modified version of Poincaré's inequality which can be applied to non-differentiable functions and may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Hyperuniformity emerges generically in the coarsening regime of phase-separating fluids. Numerical studies of active and passive systems have shown that the structure factor S(q) behaves as q ς for q → 0, with hyperuniformity exponent ς = 4. For passive systems, this result was explained in 1991 by a qualitative scaling analysis of Tomita, exploiting isotropy at scales much larger than the coarsening length. Here we reconsider and extend Tomita's argument to address cases of active phase separation and of non-constant mobility, again finding ς = 4. We further show that dynamical noise of variance D creates a transient ς = 2 regime for , crossing over to ς = 4 at larger . Here, ν is the coarsening exponent for the domain size , such that , and is the rescaled wavenumber. In diffusive coarsening ν = 1/3, so the rescaled crossover wavevector vanishes at large times when d ≥ 2. The slowness of this decay suggests a natural explanation for experiments that observe a long-lived ς = 2 scaling in phase-separating active fluids (where noise is typically large). Conversely, in d = 1, we demonstrate that with noise the ς = 2 regime survives as t → ∞, with . (The structure factor is not then determined by the zero-temperature fixed point.) We confirm our analytical predictions by numerical simulations of continuum theories for active and passive phase separation in the deterministic case and of Model B for the stochastic case. We also compare them with related findings for a system near an absorbing-state transition rather than undergoing phase separation. A central role is played throughout by the presence or absence of a conservation law for the centre of mass position R of the order parameter field.
