Abstract:Consider the $3$-dimensional $\mathcal N=4$ supersymmetric gauge theory associated with a compact Lie group $G_c$ and its quaternionic representation $\mathbf M$. Physicists study its Coulomb branch, which is a noncompact hyper-Kähler manifold with an $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-action, possibly with singularities. We give a mathematical definition of the Coulomb branch as an affine algebraic variety with $\mathbb C^\times$-action when $\mathbf M$ is of a form $\mathbf N\oplus\mathbf N^*$, as the second step of the proposal given in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1503.03676" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1503.03676">arXiv:1503.03676</a>.

Abstract:A bstract Five- and four-dimensional superconformal field theories with eight supercharges arise from canonical threefold singularities in M-theory and Type IIB string theory, respectively. We study their Coulomb and Higgs branches using crepant resolutions and deformations of the singularities. We propose a relation between the resulting moduli spaces, by compactifying the theories to 3d, followed by 3d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 mirror symmetry and an S -type gauging of an abelian flavor symmetry. In particular, we use this correspondence to determine the Higgs branch of some 5d SCFTs and their magnetic quivers from the geometry. As an application of the general framework, we observe that singularities that engineer Argyres-Douglas theories in Type IIB also give rise to rank-0 5d SCFTs in M-theory. We also compute the higher-form symmetries of the 4d and 5d SCFTs, including the one-form symmetries of generalized Argyres-Douglas theories of type ( G, G′ ).

Abstract:A bstract Compactification of M-theory and of IIB string theory on threefold canonical singularities gives rise to superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in 5d and 4d, respectively. The resolutions and deformations of the singularities encode salient features of the SCFTs and of their moduli spaces. In this paper, we build on Part 0 of this series [1] and further explore the physics of SCFTs arising from isolated hypersurface singularities. We study in detail these canonical isolated hypersurface singularities that admit a smooth Calabi-Yau (crepant) resolution. Their 5d and 4d physics is discussed and their 3d reduction and mirrors (the magnetic quivers) are determined in many cases. As an explorative tool, we provide a Mathematica code which computes key quantities for any canonical isolated hypersurface singularity, including the 5d rank, the 4d Coulomb branch spectrum and central charges, higher-form symmetries in 4d and 5d, and crepant resolutions.

Abstract:Let $(\bar{M}, \omega)$ be a compact symplectic manifold with convex boundary and $c_1(T\bar{M})=0$. Suppose that $(\bar{M}, \omega)$ is equipped with a convex Hamiltonian $G$-action for some connected, compact Lie group $G$. We construct an action of the pure Coulomb branch of $G$ on the $G$-equivariant symplectic cohomology of $\bar{M}.$ Building on work of Teleman, we use this construction to characterize the Coulomb branches of Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima in terms of equivariant symplectic cohomology.

The presentation follows a somewhat different route from other excellent reviews on the subject and it is geared towards using this tool to classify four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories. Abstract:We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1404.5527" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1404.5527">arXiv:1404.5527</a>. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

Abstract:We construct and study a nonstandard t-structure on the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Braverman-Finkelberg-Nakajima space of triples $\mathcal{R}_{G,N}$, where $N$ is a representation of a reductive group $G$. Its heart $\mathcal{KP}_{G,N}$ is a finite-length, rigid, monoidal abelian category with renormalized $r$-matrices. We refer to objects of $\mathcal{KP}_{G,N}$ as Koszul-perverse coherent sheaves. Simple objects of $\mathcal{KP}_{G,N}$ define a canonical basis in the quantized $K$-theoretic Coulomb branch of the associated gauge theory. These simples possess various characteristic properties of Wilson-'t Hooft lines, and we interpret our construction as an algebro-geometric definition of the category of half-BPS line defects in a 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theory of cotangent type.

Abstract:We study generalized global symmetries and their ’t Hooft anomalies in 3d \mathcal{N}=4 N = 4 superconformal field theories (SCFTs). Following some general considerations, we focus on good quiver gauge theories, comprised of balanced unitary nodes and unbalanced unitary and special unitary nodes. While the global form of the Higgs branch symmetry group may be determined from the UV Lagrangian, the global form of Coulomb branch symmetry groups and associated mixed ’t Hooft anomalies are more subtle due to potential symmetry enhancement in the IR. We describe how Coulomb branch symmetry groups and their mixed ’t Hooft anomalies can be deduced from the UV Lagrangian by studying center charges of various types of monopole operators, providing a concrete and unambiguous way to implement ’t Hooft anomaly matching. The final expression for the symmetry group and ’t Hooft anomalies has a concise form that can be easily read off from the quiver data, specifically from the positions of the unbalanced and flavor nodes with respect to the positions of the balanced nodes. We provide consistency checks by applying our method to compute symmetry groups of 3d \mathcal{N}=4 N = 4 theories corresponding to magnetic quivers of 4d Class S theories and 5d SCFTs. We are able to match these results against the flavor symmetry groups of the 4d and 5d theories computed using independent methods. Another strong consistency check is provided by comparing symmetry groups and anomalies of two theories related by 3d mirror symmetry.

Coulomb branch surgery: Holonomy saddles, S-folds and discrete symmetry gaugings

Abstract:Symmetries of Seiberg-Witten (SW) geometries capture intricate physical aspects of the underlying 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ field theories. For rank-one theories, these geometries are rational elliptic surfaces whose automorphism group is a semi-direct product between the Coulomb branch (CB) symmetries and the Mordell-Weil group. We study quotients of the SW geometry by subgroups of its automorphism group, which most naturally become gaugings of discrete 0- and 1-form symmetries. Yet, new interpretations of these surgeries become evident when considering 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories. There, certain CB symmetries are related to symmetries of the corresponding $(p,q)$-brane web and, as a result, CB surgeries can give rise to (fractional) S-folds. Another novel interpretation of these quotients is the folding across dimensions: circle compactifications of the 5d $E_{2N_f + 1}$ Seiberg theories lead in the infrared to two copies of locally indistinguishable 4d SU(2) SQCD theories with $N_f$ fundamental flavours. This extends earlier results on holonomy saddles, while also reproducing detailed computations of 5d BPS spectra and predicting new 5d and 6d BPS quivers. Finally, we argue that the semi-direct product structure of the automorphism group of the SW geometry includes mixed 't Hooft anomalies between the 0- and 1-form symmetries, and we also present some new results on non-cyclic CB symmetries.

Coulomb branches for quaternionic representations

Abstract:I describe the \emph{Chiral rings} $R_{3,4}$ for $3$D, $N=4$ supersymmetric $G$-gauge theory and matter fields in quaternionic representations $E$: first, by a topological tweak of the construction of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1601.03586" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1601.03586">arXiv:1601.03586</a>, and second, more explicitly, by Weyl group descent from the maximal torus. A topological obstruction is $w_4(E)$ modulo squares, for $R_3$; a secondary obstruction, from $\eta\cdot E$, may appear for $R_4$. Flatness over the Toda bases allows their calculation by reduction to $\mathrm{SU}_2$. For some representations, an Abelianization formula describes the $R$ in terms of the maximal torus and the Weyl group. This provides an alternative to a recent attempt <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2201.09475" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.09475">arXiv:2201.09475</a>.

Completely (iso-)split scale-invariant Coulomb branch geometries are isotrivial

Abstract:We show that scale-invariant special Kahler geometries whose generic r-complex-dimensional abelian variety fiber is isomorphic (completely split) or isogenous (completely iso-split) as a complex torus to the product of r one-dimensional complex tori have constant $\tau^{ij}$ modulus on the Coulomb branch, i.e., are isotrivial. These simple results are useful in organizing the classification of scale-invariant special Kahler geometries, which, in turn, is relevant to the classification of possible 4-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric superconformal field theories.

Abstract:We explore the geometrical structure of Higgs branches of quantum field theories with 8 supercharges in 3, 4, 5 and 6 dimensions. They are symplectic singularities, and as such admit a decomposition (or foliation ) into so-called symplectic leaves , which are related to each other by transverse slices . We identify this foliation with the pattern of partial Higgs mechanism of the theory and, using brane systems and recently introduced notions of magnetic quivers and quiver subtraction, we formalise the rules to obtain the Hasse diagram which encodes the structure of the foliation. While the unbroken gauge symmetry and the number of flat directions are obtainable by classical field theory analysis for Lagrangian theories, our approach allows us to characterise the geometry of the Higgs branch by a Hasse diagram with symplectic leaves and transverse slices, thus refining the analysis and extending it to non-Lagrangian theories. Most of the Hasse diagrams we obtain extend beyond the cases of nilpotent orbit closures known in the mathematics literature. The geometric analysis developed in this paper is applied to Higgs branches of several Lagrangian gauge theories, Argyres-Douglas theories, five dimensional SQCD theories at the conformal fixed point, and six dimensional SCFTs.

3d $N=2$ theories from M-theory on CY4 and IIB brane box

Abstract:We study 3D $N=2$ supersymmetric field theories geometrically engineered from M-theory on non-compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds (CY4). We establish a detailed dictionary between the geometry and topology of non-compact CY4 and the physics of 3D $N=2$ theories in three different regimes. The first one is the Coulomb branch description when the CY4 is smooth. The second one is non-abelian gauge theory when the CY4 has a degenerate $\mathbb{P}^1$-fibration structure. The third one is the strongly coupled SCFT from a CY4 singularity. We find interesting flavor symmetry enhancements in the singular limit of CY4, as well as an interesting and previously unexplored phenomenon in 3D, termed ``flavor symmetry duality''. Many examples are analyzed with an emphasis on toric CY4s and $\mathbb{C}^4$ orbifolds with crepant resolutions. We develop a new brane box method to study the physics of Coulomb branch of 3D $N=2$ theory that admits a toric construction. Via IIB/M-theory duality we find that the brane box diagram living in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be physically realized as a configuration of intersecting 4-branes which are extended objects in 8D maximal supersymmetric theory, which is shown to be consistent via various chains of dualities. The rank, effective gauge coupling and certain hints to flavor symmetry enhancement of the 3D $N=2$ theory are read off from the brane box and cross-checked against the results obtained from geometric engineering. The exotic branes in 8D maximal supersymmetric theory and the 4-string junctions thereof are shown to play a crucial role in the construction of the brane box.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider how the approach of Bezrukavnikov and Kaledin to understanding the categories of coherent sheaves on symplectic resolutions can be applied to the Coulomb branches introduced by Braverman, Finkelberg and Nakajima. In particular, we construct tilting generators on resolved Coulomb branches, and give explicit quiver presentations of categories of coherent sheaves on these varieties, with the wall-crossing functors described by natural bimodules.

Abstract:Certain star shaped quivers exhibit a pattern of symmetry enhancement on the Coulomb branch of $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories. This paper studies a subclass of theories where such global symmetry enhancement occurs through a computation of the Highest Weight Generating Function (HWG) and of the corresponding Hilbert Series (HS), providing a further test of the Coulomb branch formula. This special subclass has a feature in which the HWG takes a particularly simple form, as a simple rational function which is either a product of simple poles (termed freely generated) or a simple PE (termed complete intersection). Out of all possible star shaped quivers, this is a particularly simple subclass. The present study motivates a further study of identifying all star shaped quivers for which their HWG is of this simple form.

Abstract:In recent work, we demonstrated that a spectral variety for the Berry connection of a 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ GLSM with Kähler vacuum moduli space $X$ and abelian flavour symmetry is the support of a sheaf induced by a certain action on the equivariant quantum cohomology of $X$. This action could be quantised to first-order matrix difference equations obeyed by brane amplitudes, and by taking the conformal limit, vortex partition functions. In this article, we elucidate how some of these results may be recovered from a 3d perspective, by placing the 2d theory at a boundary and gauging the flavour symmetry via a bulk A-twisted 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theory (a sandwich construction). We interpret the above action as that of the bulk Coulomb branch algebra on boundary twisted chiral operators. This relates our work to recent constructions of actions of Coulomb branch algebras on quantum equivariant cohomology, providing a novel correspondence between these actions and spectral data of generalised periodic monopoles. The effective IR description of the 2d theory in terms of a twisted superpotential allows for explicit computations of these actions, which we demonstrate for abelian GLSMs.
