Abstract:Wiles' proof of Fermat's last theorem initiated a powerful new approach towards the resolution of certain Diophantine equations over $\mathbb{Q}$. Numerous novel obstacles arise when extending this approach to the resolution of Diophantine equations over totally real number fields. We give an extensive overview of these obstacles as well as providing a survey of existing methods and results in this area.

Abstract:Suppose $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\Q$. At the 1983 ICM the first author formulated some conjectures that propose a close relationship between the explicit class field theory construction of certain abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields and an explicit construction that (conjecturally) produces almost all of the rational points on $E$ over those fields. Those conjectures are to a large extent settled by recent work of Vatsal and of Cornut, building on work of Kolyvagin and others. In this paper we describe a collection of interrelated conjectures still open regarding the variation of Mordell-Weil groups of $E$ over abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, and suggest a possible algebraic framework to organize them.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field, and let $\mathcal{O}_{K,f}$ be an order in $K$ of conductor $f\geq 1$. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve with CM by $\mathcal{O}_{K,f}$, such that $E$ is defined by a model over $\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f})$, where $j_{K,f}=j(E)$. In this article, we classify the values of $N\geq 2$ and the elliptic curves $E$ such that (i) the division field $\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f},E[N])$ is an abelian extension of $\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f})$, and (ii) the $N$-division field coincides with the $N$-th cyclotomic extension of the base field.

Supersingular elliptic curves, quaternion algebras and applications to cryptography

Abstract:This paper contains a survey of supersingular isogeny graphs associated to supersingular elliptic curves and their various applications to cryptography. Within limitation of space, we attempt to address a broad audience and make this part widely accessible. For those graphs we also present three recent results and sketch their proofs. We then discuss a generalization to superspecial isogeny graphs associated to superspecial abelian varieties with real multiplication. These graphs were introduced by Charles, Goren and Lauter and so our discussion is brief. Motivated by their cryptographic applications, we prove a general theorem concerning generation of lattices over totally real fields by elements of specified norm. Throughout the paper we have attempted to clarify certain considerations that are either vaguely stated in the literature, or are folklore. We hope this paper will be useful both to a novice wishing to familiarize themselves with this very active area, and to the expert who may enjoy some vignettes and an overview of some new results.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field, and let $\mathcal{O}_{K,f}$ be an order in $K$ of conductor $f\geq 1$. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve with CM by $\mathcal{O}_{K,f}$, such that $E$ is defined by a model over $\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f})$, where $j_{K,f}=j(E)$. It has been shown by the author and Lozano-Robledo that $\operatorname{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f},E[N])/\mathbb{Q}(j_{K,f}))$ is only abelian for $N=2,3$, and $4$. Let $p$ be a prime and let $n\geq 1$ be an integer. In this article, we bound the commutator subgroups of $\operatorname{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(E[p^n])/\mathbb{Q})$ and classify the maximal abelian extensions contained in $\mathbb{Q}(E[p^n])/\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:The development of secure cryptographic protocols and the subsequent attack mechanisms have been placed in the literature with the utmost curiosity. While sophisticated quantum attacks bring a concern to the classical cryptographic protocols present in the applications used in everyday life, the necessity of developing post-quantum protocols is felt primarily. In post-quantum cryptography, elliptic curve-base protocols are exciting to the researchers. While the comprehensive study of elliptic curves over finite fields is well known, the extended study over finite rings is still missing. In this work, we generalize the study of Weierstrass elliptic curves over finite ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$ through classification. Several expressions to compute critical factors in studying elliptic curves are conferred. An all-around computational classification on the Weierstrass elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Z}_n$ for rigorous understanding is also attached to this work.

Zeta elements for elliptic curves and applications

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with conductor $N$ and $p\nmid 2N$ a prime. Let $L$ be an imaginary quadratic field with $p$ split. We prove the existence of $p$-adic zeta element for $E$ over $L$, encoding two different $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to $E$ over $L$ via explicit reciprocity laws at the primes above $p$. We formulate a main conjecture for $E$ over $L$ in terms of the zeta element, mediating different main conjectures in which the $p$-adic $L$-functions appear, and prove some results toward them. The zeta element has various applications to the arithmetic of elliptic curves. This includes a proof of main conjecture for semistable elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ at supersingular primes $p$, as conjectured by Kobayashi in 2002. It leads to the $p$-part of the conjectural Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) formula for such curves of analytic rank zero or one, and enables us to present the first infinite families of non-CM elliptic curves for which the BSD conjecture is true. We provide further evidence towards the BSD conjecture: new cases of $p$-converse to the Gross--Zagier and Kolyvagin theorem, and $p$-part of the BSD formula for ordinary primes $p$. Along the way, we give a proof of a conjecture of Perrin-Riou connecting Beilinson--Kato elements with rational points.

Abstract:For any elliptic curve E defined over the rationals with complex multiplication and for every prime p, we describe the image of the mod p Galois representation attached to E. We deduce information about the field of definition of torsion points of these curves, in particular we classify all cases where there are torsion points over Galois number fields not containing the field of definition of the CM.

Abstract:We prove several results on torsion points and Galois representations for complex multiplication (CM) elliptic curves over a number field containing the CM field. One result computes the degree in which such an elliptic curve has a rational point of order $N$, refining results of Silverberg. Another result bounds the size of the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve with CM by a nonmaximal order in terms of the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve with CM by the maximal order. Our techniques also yield a complete classification of both the possible torsion subgroups and the rational cyclic isogenies of a $K$-CM elliptic curve $E$ defined over $K(j(E))$.

Abstract:In the theory of algebraic function fields and their applications to the information theory, the Riemann-Roch theorem plays a fundamental role. But its use, delicate in general, is efficient and practical for applications especially in the case of non-special divisors. So, in this paper, we give a survey of the known results concerning the non-special divisors in the algebraic function fields defined over finite fields, enriched with some new results about the existence of such divisors in curves of defect k. In particular, we have chosen to be self-contained by giving the full proofs of each result, the original proofs or shorter alternative proofs.

Abstract:The survey presents the evolution of Short Weierstrass elliptic curves after their introduction in cryptography. Subsequently, this evolution resulted in the establishment of present elliptic curve computational standards. We discuss the chronology of attacks on Elliptic Curve Discrete Logarithm Problem and investigate their countermeasures to highlight the evolved selection criteria of cryptographically safe elliptic curves. Further, two popular deterministic and random approaches for selection of Short Weierstrass elliptic curve for cryptography are evaluated from computational, security and trust perspectives and a trend in existent computational standards is demonstrated. Finally, standard and non-standard elliptic curves are analysed to add a new insight into their usability. There is no such survey conducted in past to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:Algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points have received a lot of attention in recent years. We present a survey of this subject covering both the case of fixed genus and the asymptotic theory. A strong impetus in the asymptotic theory has come from a thorough exploitation of the method of infinite class field towers. On the other hand, we show by a counterexample that Perret’s conjecture on infinite class field towers is wrong, and so Perret’s method of infinite ramified class field towers breaks down. In the last two sections of the paper we discuss applications of algebraic curves over finite fields with many rational points to coding theory and to the construction of low-discrepancy sequences.

Abstract:Given an elliptic curve E defined over the rational numbers and a prime p at which E has good reduction, we consider the Galois deformation ring parametrizing lifts of the residual representation on the p -torsion group E [ p ]. The deformations considered are subject to the flat condition at p . For a fixed elliptic curve without complex multiplication, it is shown that these deformation rings are unobstructed for all but finitely many primes. For a fixed prime p and varying elliptic curve E , we relate the problem to the question of how often p does not divide the modular degree. Heuristics due to M.Watkins based on those of Cohen and Lenstra indicate that this proportion should be . This heuristic is supported by computations which indicate that most elliptic curves (satisfying further conditions) have smooth deformation rings at a given prime , and this proportion comes close to as p gets larger.

A Survey of a Random Matrix Model for a Family of Cusp Forms

Abstract:The Katz-Sarnak philosophy states that statistics of zeros of $L$-function families near the central point as the conductors tend to infinity agree with those of eigenvalues of random matrix ensembles as the matrix size tends to infinity. While numerous results support this conjecture, S. J. Miller observed that for finite conductors, very different behavior can occur for zeros near the central point in elliptic curve families. This led to the excised model of Dueñez, Huynh, Keating, Miller, and Snaith, whose predictions for quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve are beautifully fit by the data. The key ingredients are relating the discretization of central values of the $L$-functions to excising matrices based on the value of the characteristic polynomials at 1 and using lower order terms (in statistics such as the one-level density and pair-correlation) to adjust the matrix size. We discuss recent successes by the authors in extending this model to a family of quadratic twists of finite conductor of a given holomorphic cuspidal newform of level an odd prime level. In particular, we predict very little repulsion for forms with weight greater than 2.

Abstract:For a non-CM elliptic curve $E$ defined over a number field $K$, the Galois action on its torsion points gives rise to a Galois representation $\rho_E: Gal(\overline{K}/K)\to GL_2(\widehat{\mathbb{Z}})$ that is unique up to isomorphism. A renowned theorem of Serre says that the image of $\rho_E$ is an open, and hence finite index, subgroup of $GL_2(\widehat{\mathbb{Z}})$. In an earlier work of the author, an algorithm was given, and implemented, that computed the image of $\rho_E$ up to conjugacy in $GL_2(\widehat{\mathbb{Z}})$ in the special case $K=\mathbb{Q}$. A fundamental ingredient of this earlier work was the Kronecker-Weber theorem whose conclusion fails for number fields $K\neq \mathbb{Q}$. We shall give an overview of an analogous algorithm for a general number field and work out the required group theory. We also give some bounds on the index in Serre's theorem for a typical elliptic curve over a fixed number field.

Abstract:Given an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ of conductor $N$, there exists a surjective morphism $\phi_E: X_0(N) \to E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, we discuss the growth of $\mathrm{deg}(\phi_E)$ and shed some light on Watkins's conjecture, which predicts $2^{\mathrm{rank}(E(\mathbb{Q}))} \mid \mathrm{deg}(\phi_E)$. Moreover, for any elliptic curve over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$, we have an analogous modular parametrization relating to the Drinfeld modular curves. In this case, we also discuss growth and the divisibility properties.

Abstract:This survey is about Galois theory of curves in characteristic p, a topic which has inspired major research in algebraic geometry and number theory and which contains many open questions. We illustrate important phenomena which occur for covers of curves in characteristic p. We explain key results on the structure of fundamental groups. We end by describing areas of active research and giving two new results about the genus and p-rank of certain covers of the affine line.

Abstract:The parity of Selmer ranks for elliptic curves defined over the rational numbers $\mathbb{Q}$ with good ordinary reduction at an odd prime $p$ has been studied by Shekhar. The proof of Shekhar relies on proving a parity result for the $\lambda$-invariants of Selmer groups over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $\mathbb{Q}_\infty$ of $\mathbb{Q}$. This has been further generalized for elliptic curves with supersingular reduction at $p$ by Hatley and for modular forms by Hatley--Lei. In this paper, we prove a parity result for the $\lambda$-invariants of Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Q}_\infty$ for the symmetric square representations associated to two modular forms with congruent residual Galois representations. We treat both the ordinary and the non-ordinary cases.
