Abstract:The Halperin $(m',m,n)$ fractional quantum Hall effects of two-component quantum particles are studied in topological checkerboard lattice models. Here for $m\neq m'$, we demonstrate the emergence of fractional quantum hall effects with the associated $\mathbf{K}=\begin{pmatrix} m+2 & 1\\ 1 & m\\ \end{pmatrix}$ matrix (even $m=2$ for boson and odd $m=3$ for fermion) in the presence of both strong intercomponent and intracomponent repulsions. Through exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we elucidate their topological fractionalizations, including (i) the $\det|\mathbf{K}|=(m^2+2m-1)$-fold ground-state degeneracies and (ii) fractionally quantized topological Chern number matrix $\mathbf{C}=\mathbf{K}^{-1}$. Our flat band model provides a paradigmatic example of a microscopic Hamiltonian featuring fractional quantum Hall effect with partial spin-polarization.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the emergence of Halperin (m', m, n) fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the system of two - component quantum particles (bosons and fermions) with strong interactions in the topological flat - band model. Specifically, the author focuses on the microscopic topological lattice model in the lowest band with unit Chern number, and identifies and studies the many - body ground - state properties of these systems by numerical methods such as exact diagonalization and density - matrix renormalization - group calculations.
### Research Background and Problem Description
1. **Multi - component Fractional Quantum Hall Effect**
- Multi - component FQHE provides a new way to realize new topological quantum phases and extends the classification of topological phases of matter.
- For example, Halperin's two - component quantum Hall effect and quantum Hall ferromagnets can support non - trivial topological excitations such as skyrmion.
2. **Topological Flat - band Model**
- Topological flat - bands are similar to two - dimensional Landau levels and become an exciting platform for studying the quantum Hall effect in two - dimensional lattice systems.
- In these models, the single - component FQHE at specific fillings has been widely studied, but the FQHE in multi - component systems still needs to be further explored.
3. **Specific Research Problems**
- Explore whether strongly interacting two - component quantum particles can produce Halperin (m', m, n) FQHE in the topological π - flux checkerboard lattice with unit Chern number.
- Verify the existence and properties of the K - matrix by numerical methods, especially how the asymmetric interactions between different components affect these effects.
### Main Research Contents
1. **Model and Method**
- A microscopic interacting Hamiltonian containing two - component quantum particles (hard - core bosons or fermions) is introduced, and the particles are coupled through the extended Hubbard interaction.
- Use exact diagonalization (ED) and density - matrix renormalization - group (DMRG) simulations to study the many - body ground - states of these systems under strong interactions.
2. **Numerical Results**
- For hard - core bosons, at fillings of ν↑ = 1/7 and ν↓ = 3/7, a seven - fold quasi - degenerate ground - state is found, and its topological order is described by the Kb = (
4 1
1 2
) matrix.
- For fermions, at fillings of ν↑ = 1/7 and ν↓ = 2/7, a fourteen - fold quasi - degenerate ground - state is found, and its topological order is described by the Kf = (
5 1
1 3
) matrix.
3. **Topological Features**
- Verify the topological degeneracy of the ground - state, that is, the degeneracy of det |K| times.
- Calculate the fractionally quantized topological Chern - number matrix and find that it is equal to the inverse matrix of the K - matrix.
### Conclusion
Through the above research, the author successfully shows the emergence of Halperin (m', m, n) FQHE in the system of two - component quantum particles with strong interactions in the topological flat - band with unit Chern number. This research provides a new paradigm for understanding and designing the exotic quantum Hall physics with unbalanced spin polarization.
