Abstract:We prove an analog of the disintegration theorem for tracial von Neumann algebras in the setting of elementary equivalence rather than isomorphism, showing that elementary equivalence of two direct integrals implies fiberwise elementary equivalence under mild, and necessary, hypotheses. This verifies a conjecture of Farah and Ghasemi. Our argument uses a continuous analog of ultraproducts where an ultrafilter on a discrete index set is replaced by a character on a commutative von Neumann algebra, which is closely related to Keisler randomizations of metric structures. We extend several essential results on ultraproducts, such as Łoś's theorem and countable saturation, to this more general setting.

Abstract:We provide a complete characterization of theories of tracial von Neumann algebras that admit quantifier elimination. We also show that the theory of a separable tracial von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{N}$ is never model complete if its direct integral decomposition contains $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors $\mathcal{M}$ such that $M_2(\mathcal{M})$ embeds into an ultrapower of $\mathcal{M}$. The proof in the case of $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors uses an explicit construction based on random matrices and quantum expanders.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of operator algebras -- tracially complete C*-algebras -- as a vehicle for transferring ideas and results between C*-algebras and their tracial von Neumann algebra completions. We obtain structure and classification results for amenable tracially complete C*-algebras satisfying an appropriate version of Murray and von Neumann's property gamma for II_1 factors. In a precise sense, these results fit between Connes' celebrated theorems for injective II_1 factors and the unital classification theorem for separable simple nuclear C*-algebras. The theory also underpins arguments for the known parts of the Toms-Winter conjecture.

Abstract:Every positive multilinear map between -algebras is separately weak -continuous. We show that the joint weak -continuity is equivalent to the joint weak -continuity of the multiplications of the -algebras under consideration. We study the behavior of general tracial positive maps on properly infinite von Neumann algebras and by applying the Aron–Berner extension of multilinear maps, we establish that under some mild conditions every tracial positive multilinear map between general -algebras enjoys a decomposition , in which is a tracial positive linear map with the commutative range and is a tracial completely positive map with the commutative domain. As an immediate consequence, tracial positive multilinear maps are completely positive. Furthermore, we prove that if the domain of a general tracial completely positive map between -algebra is a von Neumann algebra, then has a similar decomposition. As an application, we investigate the generalized variance and covariance in quantum mechanics for arbitrary positive maps. Among others, an uncertainty relation inequality for commuting observables in a composite physical system is presented.

Abstract:In this note, we developed several results concerning abelian von Neumann algebras, their spectrums, and their tensor products with other von Neumann algebras. In particular, we developed a theory connecting elements of the spectrum of $L^\infty(\Omega, \mu)$ with ultrafilters on a Boolean algebra associated with $(\Omega, \mu)$, generalizing the case where $\Omega$ is a discrete space and its spectrum is identified with the space of ultrafilters on $\Omega$. These ultrafilters were also used to define a new kind of tracial ultrapowers. We also developed a theory representing elements of $L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} M$ as functions that are continuous from the spectrum to $M$ equipped with the weak* topology, analogous to the classical direct integral theory, but which can apply to non-separable von Neumann algebras. We then applied this theory to prove several structural results of isomorphisms $L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} M \rightarrow L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} N$ where $M$ and $N$ are $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors and placed several constraints on $M$ and $N$. The ultrafilter representation of the spectrum was then used to perform certain calculations to provide specific examples regarding the spectrum representations of tensor products as well as the structures of isomorphisms $L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} M \rightarrow L^\infty(\Omega, \mu) \bar{\otimes} N$.

Abstract:We prove that the space of traces $\text{T}(A)$ of the unital full free product $A=A_1*A_2$ of two unital, separable $C^*$-algebras $A_1$ and $A_2$ is typically a Poulsen simplex, i.e., a simplex whose extreme points are dense. We deduce that $\text{T}(A)$ is a Poulsen simplex whenever $A_1$ and $A_2$ have no $1$-dimensional representations, e.g., if $A_1$ and $A_2$ are finite dimensional with no $1$-dimensional direct summands. Additionally, we characterize when the space of traces of a free product of two countable groups is a Poulsen simplex. Our main technical contribution is a new perturbation result for pairs of von Neumann subalgebras $(M_1,M_2)$ of a tracial von Neumann algebra $M$ which gives necessary conditions ensuring that $M_1$ and a small unitary perturbation of $M_2$ generate a II$_1$ factor.

Abstract:We prove novel asymptotic freeness results in tracial ultraproduct von Neumann algebras. In particular, we show that whenever is a tracial free product von Neumann algebra and , are Haar unitaries, the relative commutants and are freely independent in the ultraproduct . Our proof relies on Mei–Ricard's results [MR16] regarding -boundedness (for all ) of certain Fourier multipliers in tracial amalgamated free products von Neumann algebras. We derive two applications. Firstly, we obtain a general absorption result in tracial amalgamated free products that recovers several previous maximal amenability/Gamma absorption results. Secondly, we prove a new lifting theorem which we combine with our asymptotic freeness results and Chifan–Ioana–Kunnawalkam Elayavalli's recent construction [CIKE22] to provide the first example of a factor that does not have property Gamma and is not elementary equivalent to any free product of diffuse tracial von Neumann algebras.

Abstract:The standard generators of tridiagonal algebras, recently introduced by Terwilliger, are shown to generate a new (in)finite family of mutually commuting operators which extends the Dolan-Grady construction. The involution property relies on the tridiagonal algebraic structure associated with a deformation parameter $q$. Representations are shown to be generated from a class of quadratic algebras, namely the reflection equations. The spectral problem is briefly discussed. Finally, related massive quantum integrable models are shown to be superintegrable.

Abstract:We show that the canonical equivalences of categories between 2-dimensional (unoriented) topological quantum field theories valued in a symmetric monoidal category and (extended) commutative Frobenius algebras in that symmetric monoidal category are symmetric monoidal equivalences. As an application, we recover that the invariant of 2-dimensional manifolds given by the product of (extended) commutative Frobenius algebras in a symmetric tensor category is the multiplication of the invariants given by each of the algebras.

Abstract:We survey the developments in the model theory of tracial von Neumann algebras that have taken place in the last fifteen years. We discuss the appropriate first-order language for axiomatizing this class as well as the subclass of II$_1$ factors. We discuss how model-theoretic ideas were used to settle a variety of questions around isomorphism of ultrapowers of tracial von Neumann algebras with respect to different ultrafilters before moving on to more model-theoretic concerns, such as theories of II$_1$ factors and existentially closed II$_1$ factors. We conclude with two recent applications of model-theoretic ideas to questions around relative commutants.

Abstract:We study correspondences of tracial von Neumann algebras from the model-theoretic point of view. We introduce and study an ultraproduct of correspondences and use this ultraproduct to prove, for a fixed pair of tracial von Neumann algebras M and N, that the class of M-N correspondences forms an elementary class. We prove that the corresponding theory is classifiable, all of its completions are stable, that these completions have quantifier elimination in an appropriate language, and that one of these completions is in fact the model companion. We also show that the class of triples (M, H, N), where M and N are tracial von Neumann algebras and H is an M-N correspondence, form an elementary class. As an application of our framework, we show that a II_1 factor M has property (T) precisely when the set of central vectors form a definable set relative to the theory of M-M correspondences. We then use our approach to give a simpler proof that the class of structures (M, Phi), where M is a sigma-finite von Neumann algebra and Phi is a faithful normal state, forms an elementary class. Finally, we initiate the study of a family of Connes-type ultraproducts on C*-algebras.

Reconstructing Classical Algebras via Ternary Operations

Abstract:Although algebraic structures are frequently analyzed using unary and binary operations, they can also be effectively defined and unified through ternary operations. In this context, we introduce structures that contain two constants and a ternary operation. We demonstrate that these structures are isomorphic to various significant algebraic systems, including Boolean algebras, de Morgan algebras, MV-algebras, and (near) rings of characteristic two. Our work highlights the versatility of ternary operations in describing and connecting diverse algebraic structures.

Abstract:Given a finite tensor category , we prove that a modified trace on the tensor ideal of projective objects can be obtained from a suitable trivialization of the Nakayama functor as right -module functor. Using a result of Costello, this allows us to associate to any finite tensor category equipped with such a trivialization of the Nakayama functor a chain complex valued topological conformal field theory, the trace field theory . The trace field theory topologically describes the modified trace, the Hattori-Stallings trace, and also the structures induced by them on the Hochschild complex of . In this article, we focus on implications in the linear (as opposed to differential graded) setting: We use the trace field theory to define a non-unital homotopy commutative product on the Hochschild chains in degree zero. Abstract:A classical result in quantum topology is that oriented 2-dimensional topological quantum field theories (2-TQFTs) are fully classified by commutative Frobenius algebras. In 2006, Turaev and Turner introduced additional structure on Frobenius algebras, forming what are called extended Frobenius algebras, to classify 2-TQFTs in the unoriented case. This work provides a systematic study of extended Frobenius algebras in various settings: over a field, in a monoidal category, and in the framework of monoidal functors. Numerous examples, classification results, and general constructions of extended Frobenius algebras are established.

Abstract:In this paper, we explain a strategy on $g$-vectors to discover some new minimal $\tau$-tilting infinite two-point algebras. Consequently, the $\tau$-tilting finiteness of various two-point monomial algebras, including all radical cube zero cases, could be determined. Moreover, we find that the derived equivalence class of the Kronecker algebra contains only itself and its opposite algebra.
