Abstract:Isotropic positive definite functions on spheres play important roles in spatial statistics, where they occur as the correlation functions of homogeneous random fields and star-shaped random particles. In approximation theory, strictly positive definite functions serve as radial basis functions for interpolating scattered data on spherical domains. We review characterizations of positive definite functions on spheres in terms of Gegenbauer expansions and apply them to dimension walks, where monotonicity properties of the Gegenbauer coefficients guarantee positive definiteness in higher dimensions. Subject to a natural support condition, isotropic positive definite functions on the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, such as Askey's and Wendland's functions, allow for the direct substitution of the Euclidean distance by the great circle distance on a one-, two- or three-dimensional sphere, as opposed to the traditional approach, where the distances are transformed into each other. Completely monotone functions are positive definite on spheres of any dimension and provide rich parametric classes of such functions, including members of the powered exponential, Matérn, generalized Cauchy and Dagum families. The sine power family permits a continuous parameterization of the roughness of the sample paths of a Gaussian process. A collection of research problems provides challenges for future work in mathematical analysis, probability theory and spatial statistics.

Path Integral Representations on the Complex Sphere

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the path integral representations for the coordinate systems on the complex sphere S3C. The Schroedinger equation, respectively the path integral, separates in exactly 21 orthogonal coordinate systems. We enumerate these coordinate systems and we are able to present the path integral representations explicitly in the majority of the cases. In each solution the expansion into the wave-functions is stated. Also, the kernel and the corresponding Green function can be stated in closed form in terms of the invariant distance on the sphere, respectively on the hyperboloid.

As a consequence, for an isotropic and continuous positive definite function in the Euclidean space, if it is compactly supported, it can be adopted as an isotropic positive definite function on a sphere.

The function in the integrand $\frac{1-e^{-\pi y^2+\pi \omega y}}{1-e^{2\pi \omega y}}$ is entire. Therefore, no residue is added when we move the path of integration.

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of one-loop integrals by investigating the connection between their singularity structures and geometric configurations in the projective space associated to their Feynman parametrization. We analyze these integrals by two recursive methods, which leads to two independent algebraic algorithms that determine the symbols of any one-loop integrals in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. The discontinuities of Feynman diagrams are shown to arise from taking certain "spherical contour" residues in Feynman parameter space, which is geometrically interpreted as a projection of the quadric surface (associated to the Symanzik polynomial at one loop) through faces of the integration region (which is a simplex). This geometry also leads to a manifestly Lorentz-invariant understanding for perturbative unitarity at one loop.

To do so, we first prove a characterization of the nonsymmetric Beta distribution via size-biased sampling. Two applications are a new characterization of the Dirichlet distribution and a marked version of a classical characterization of the Poisson–Dirichlet distribution via invariance and independence properties.

Abstract:The art of analysis involves the subtle combination of approximation, inequalities, and geometric intuition as well as being able to work at different scales. With this subtlety in mind, we present this paper in a manner designed for wide accessibility for both advanced undergraduate students and graduate students. The main results include a singular integral for measuring the level sets of a $C^{1,1}$ function mapping from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}$, that is, one whose derivative is Lipschitz continuous. We extend this to measure embedded submanifolds in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that are merely $C^1$ using the distance function and provide an example showing that the measure does not hold for general rectifiable boundaries.

Abstract:At the end of 19-th century, 1874, Hermann Schwartz found that for every point inside a planar disk, a two-dimensional Poisson Kernel can be written as a ratio of two segments, which he called as the geometric interpretation of that Kernel \cite{Schwarz}. About 90 years later, Lars Ahlfors, in his textbook, called this ratio as interesting \cite{Ahlfors}. We shall see here that every two different points, in a multidimensional space also define a similar ratio of two segments. The main goal of this paper is to study some integral properties of the ratio as well as introduce and proof One Radius Theorem for Spherical Ratio of two points. In particular, we introduce a new integration technique involving the ratio of two segments and a non-trivial integral equivalence leading to an integral relationship between Newtonian Potential and Poisson Kernel in any multi-dimensional space.

Abstract:We give a classification of unitary representations of certain Polish, not necessarily locally compact, groups: the groups of all measurable functions with values in the circle and the groups of all continuous functions on compact, second countable, zero-dimensional spaces with values in the circle. In the proofs of our classification results, certain structure theorems and factorization theorems for linear operators are used.

Abstract:This work aims to build a bridge between probability methods and finite element methods. It starts with considering probability distributions supported in an interval [a,b], which incorporate the traditional probability distributions defined on the whole real space as limit cases on the one hand, lead to a type of spherical probability models with wide potential applications on the other hand. This type of probability has scaling and symmetry feature, and sufficient conditions under which a density function can be generated through discrete polynomial spectrum are given in this work followed by concrete examples. The density function ρ obtained in this way has the advantage of being positive definite. Computer based numerical simulation shows that the theoretically verified criteria for probability distribution are almost optimal with respect to our testing examples. After the establishment of an approximation theorem in L1 space, we propose a probabilistic Galerkin scheme that can be either continuous or discontinuous, which is potentially useful to asymptotically solve some PDEs on the sphere locally and globally.

Abstract:This work studies the convexity of a class of positive definite probability measures with density functionsρ=cλ∑n=0∞g(n)Cnλwλ, that are generated through the interval characteristic sequences. We discuss when such measures supported in an interval are convex and demonstrate how convexity is preserved under multiplication by certain multipliers and under the intertwining product. A key message to be delivered from this work is: any integrable function f on the interval with a polynomial expansion that has relatively fast absolute convergence, can be decomposed into a non-unique pair of positive convex interval probabilities (f+,f−)∈Eλ′×Eλ′ up to normalization, in the sense that f=f+−f−, where Eλ′ is a class of convex functions. Consequently not only the study of an interval distribution is reduced to the study of the properties of class Eλ′, but also the discontinuous probabilistic Galerkin schemes can be simplified. As concrete examples the decomposition of polynomials and truncated normal distribution are computed and graphically illustrated. Such interval measures lead to localized spherical probability measures, and as a convex expression of probability measure is a Jensen type inequality for spherical random variables. Based on the spherical information entropy models, one dependent on the domain partition and the other not, we propose three minimization formulations for the probabilistic finite element method, including one that mixes the least-squares and entropy models.
Spherical and hyperbolic orthogonal ring patterns: integrability and variational principles

Abstract:We introduce orthogonal ring patterns in the 2-sphere and in the hyperbolic plane, consisting of pairs of concentric circles, which generalize circle patterns. We show that their radii are described by a discrete integrable system. This is a special case of the master integrable equation Q4. The variational description is given in terms of elliptic generalizations of the dilogarithm function. They have the same convexity principles as their circle-pattern counterparts. This allows us to prove existence and uniqueness results for the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems. Some examples are computed numerically. In the limit of small smoothly varying rings, one obtains harmonic maps to the sphere and to the hyperbolic plane. A close relation to discrete surfaces with constant mean curvature is explained.

Abstract:We consider the group $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$ of isometries of a semi-homogeneous tree $T=T_{q_+,q_-}$ with valencies $q_+ +1$ and $q_- +1$ and its two orbits $V_+$, $V_-$ respectively. We make use of the action of $\mathrm{Aut} (T)$ to equip the spaces of finitely supported radial functions on each of $V_\pm$ with convolution products, hence with a notion of positive definite functions. The $\ell^1$-functions radial around a root vertex $v_0\in V_+$ form an abelian convolution algebra. We study its multiplicative functionals, called spherical functions, given by eigenfunctions of the nearest-neighbor isotropic transition operator (the Laplace operator on $T$, and determine which of them are positive definite. Each positive definite function gives rise to a unitary representation of $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$; in this way, we produce a series of unitary spherical representations. For $q_+<q_-$, the representation whose spherical function has eigenvalue 0 is square-integrable.

Abstract:Using a natural representation of a 1/ s -concave function on as a convex set in we derive a simple formula for the integral of its s -polar. This leads to convexity properties of the integral of the s -polar function with respect to the center of polarity. In particular, we prove that the reciprocal of the integral of the polar function of a log-concave function is log-concave as a function of the center of polarity. Also, we define the Santaló regions for s -concave and log-concave functions and generalize the Santaló inequality for them in the case the origin is not the Santaló point.

Abstract:Let f be a circle diffeomorphism with irrational rotation number. As established by Douady and Yoccoz in the eighties, for any given there exists a unique automorphic measure of exponent s for f . In the present paper we prove that the same holds for multicritical circle maps , and we provide two applications of this result. The first one, is to prove that the space of invariant distributions of order 1 of any given multicritical circle map is one-dimensional, spanned by the unique invariant measure. The second one, is an improvement over the Denjoy–Koksma inequality for multicritical circle maps and absolutely continuous observables.
