Abstract:We study the integration problem over the $s$-dimensional unit cube on four types of Banach spaces of integrands. First we consider Haar wavelet spaces, consisting of functions whose Haar wavelet coefficients exhibit a certain decay behavior measured by a parameter $\alpha >0$. We study the worst case error of integration over the norm unit ball and provide upper error bounds for quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) cubature rules based on arbitrary $(t,m,s)$-nets as well as matching lower error bounds for arbitrary cubature rules. These results show that using arbitrary $(t,m,s)$-nets as sample points yields the best possible rate of convergence. Afterwards we study spaces of integrands of fractional smoothness $\alpha \in (0,1)$ and state a sharp Koksma-Hlawka-type inequality. More precisely, we show that on those spaces the worst case error of integration is equal to the corresponding fractional discrepancy. Those spaces can be continuously embedded into tensor product Bessel potential spaces, also known as Sobolev spaces of dominated mixed smoothness, with the same set of parameters. The latter spaces can be embedded into suitable Besov spaces of dominating mixed smoothness $\alpha$, which in turn can be embedded into the Haar wavelet spaces with the same set of parameters. Therefore our upper error bounds on Haar wavelet spaces for QMC cubatures based on $(t,m,s)$-nets transfer (with possibly different constants) to the corresponding spaces of integrands of fractional smoothness and to Sobolev and Besov spaces of dominating mixed smoothness. Moreover, known lower error bounds for periodic Sobolev and Besov spaces of dominating mixed smoothness show that QMC integration based on arbitrary $(t,m,s)$-nets yields the best possible convergence rate on periodic as well as on non-periodic Sobolev and Besov spaces of dominating smoothness.

Abstract:We describe a new open-source Python-based package for high accuracy correlated electron calculations using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) in real space: PyQMC . PyQMC implements modern versions of QMC algorithms in an accessible format, enabling algorithmic development and easy implementation of complex workflows. Tight integration with the PySCF environment allows for a simple comparison between QMC calculations and other many-body wave function techniques, as well as access to high accuracy trial wave functions.

High-order numerical integration on regular embedded surfaces

Abstract:We present a high-order surface quadrature (HOSQ) for accurately approximating regular surface integrals on closed surfaces. The initial step of our approach rests on exploiting square-squeezing--a homeomorphic bilinear square-simplex transformation, re-parametrizing any surface triangulation to a quadrilateral mesh. For each resulting quadrilateral domain we interpolate the geometry by tensor polynomials in Chebyshev--Lobatto grids. Posterior the tensor-product Clenshaw-Curtis quadrature is applied to compute the resulting integral. We demonstrate efficiency, fast runtime performance, high-order accuracy, and robustness for complex geometries.

Quasi-interpolation projectors for Subdivision Surfaces

Abstract:Subdivision surfaces are considered as an extension of splines to accommodate models with complex topologies, making them useful for addressing PDEs on models with complex topologies in isogeometric analysis. This has generated a lot of interest in the field of subdivision space approximation. The quasi-interpolation offers a highly efficient approach for spline approximation, eliminating the necessity of solving large linear systems of equations. Nevertheless, the lack of analytical expressions at extraordinary points on subdivision surfaces makes traditional techniques for creating B-spline quasi-interpolants inappropriate for subdivision spaces. To address this obstacle, this paper innovatively reframes the evaluation issue associated with subdivision surfaces as a correlation between subdivision matrices and limit points, offering a thorough method for quasi-interpolation specifically designed for subdivision surfaces. This developed quasi-interpolant, termed the subdivision space projection operator, accurately reproduces the subdivision space. We provide explicit quasi-interpolation formulas for various typical subdivision schemes. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the quasi-interpolants for Catmull-Clark and Loop subdivision exhibit third-order approximation in the (L_2) norm and second-order in the (L_\infty) norm. Furthermore, the modified Loop subdivision quasi-interpolant achieves optimal approximation rates in both the (L_2) and (L_\infty) norms.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 533-566, February 2024. We study quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) integration over the multidimensional unit cube in several weighted function spaces with different smoothness classes. We consider approximating the integral of a function by the median of several integral estimates under independent and random choices of the underlying QMC point sets (either linearly scrambled digital nets or infinite-precision polynomial lattice point sets). Even though our approach does not require any information on the smoothness and weights of a target function space as an input, we can prove a probabilistic upper bound on the worst-case error for the respective weighted function space, where the failure probability converges to 0 exponentially fast as the number of estimates increases. Our obtained rates of convergence are nearly optimal for function spaces with finite smoothness, and we can attain a dimension-independent super-polynomial convergence for a class of infinitely differentiable functions. This implies that our median-based QMC rule is universal in the sense that it does not need to be adjusted to the smoothness and the weights of the function spaces and yet exhibits the nearly optimal rate of convergence. Numerical experiments support our theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel parametric surfaces intersection algorithm based on discrete surfels. First the parametric surfaces are sampled as point sampling surfaces. Each point is called a surfel with geometric information attached. Then the surfels are resampled adaptively by error analysis. Adaptive octree is built to accelerate the intersection operations. Finally, the intersection lines are resulted after sorting these discrete intersection points. Experiments show that our algorithm is effective and easy to implement. The precision of the intersection lines is controllable.

Abstract:We construct quasi-Monte Carlo methods to approximate the expected values of linear functionals of Galerkin discretizations of parametric operator equations which depend on a possibly infinite sequence of parameters. Such problems arise in the numerical solution of differential and integral equations with random field inputs. We analyze the regularity of the solutions with respect to the parameters in terms of the rate of decay of the fluctuations of the input field. If $p\in (0,1]$ denotes the "summability exponent" corresponding to the fluctuations in affine-parametric families of operators, then we prove that deterministic "interlaced polynomial lattice rules" of order $\alpha = \lfloor 1/p \rfloor+1$ in $s$ dimensions with $N$ points can be constructed using a fast component-by-component algorithm, in $\mathcal{O}(\alpha\,s\, N\log N + \alpha^2\,s^2 N)$ operations, to achieve a convergence rate of $\mathcal{O}(N^{-1/p})$, with the implied constant independent of $s$. This dimension-independent convergence rate is superior to the rate $\mathcal{O}(N^{-1/p+1/2})$, for $2/3\leq p\leq 1$ recently established for randomly shifted lattice rules under comparable assumptions. In our analysis we use a non-standard Banach space setting and introduce "smoothness-driven product and order dependent (SPOD)" weights for which we show fast CBC construction.

Abstract:This paper presents a method to compute the {\it quasi-conformal parameterization} (QCMC) for a multiply-connected 2D domain or surface. QCMC computes a quasi-conformal map from a multiply-connected domain $S$ onto a punctured disk $D_S$ associated with a given Beltrami differential. The Beltrami differential, which measures the conformality distortion, is a complex-valued function $\mu:S\to\mathbb{C}$ with supremum norm strictly less than 1. Every Beltrami differential gives a conformal structure of $S$. Hence, the conformal module of $D_S$, which are the radii and centers of the inner circles, can be fully determined by $\mu$, up to a Möbius transformation. In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm to simultaneously search for the conformal module and the optimal quasi-conformal parameterization. The key idea is to minimize the Beltrami energy subject to the boundary constraints. The optimal solution is our desired quasi-conformal parameterization onto a punctured disk. The parameterization of the multiply-connected domain simplifies numerical computations and has important applications in various fields, such as in computer graphics and vision. Experiments have been carried out on synthetic data together with real multiply-connected Riemann surfaces. Results show that our proposed method can efficiently compute quasi-conformal parameterizations of multiply-connected domains and outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms. Applications of the proposed parameterization technique have also been explored.

Abstract:In a previous paper (J. Comp. Phys. 230 (2011), 3668--3694), the authors proposed a new practical method for computing expected values of functionals of solutions for certain classes of elliptic partial differential equations with random coefficients. This method was based on combining quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) methods for computing the expected values with circulant embedding methods for sampling the random field on a regular grid. It was found capable of handling fluid flow problems in random heterogeneous media with high stochastic dimension, but a convergence theory was missing. This paper provides a convergence analysis for the method in the case when the QMC method is a specially designed randomly shifted lattice rule. The convergence result depends on the eigenvalues of the underlying nested block circulant matrix and can be independent of the number of stochastic variables under certain assumptions. In fact the QMC analysis applies to general factorisations of the covariance matrix to sample the random field. The error analysis for the underlying fully discrete finite element method allows for locally refined meshes (via interpolation from a regular sampling grid of the random field). Numerical results on a non-regular domain with corner singularities in two spatial dimensions and on a regular domain in three spatial dimensions are included.

Abstract:We analyze convergence rates of quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) quadratures for countably-parametric solutions of linear, elliptic partial differential equations (PDE) in divergence form with log-Gaussian diffusion coefficient, based on the error bounds in Nichols and Kuo (J Complex 30(4):444–468, 2014. 10.1016/j.jco.2014.02.004). We prove, for representations of the Gaussian random field PDE input with locally supported basis functions, and for continuous, piecewise polynomial finite element discretizations in the physical domain novel QMC error bounds in weighted spaces with product weights that exploit localization of supports of the basis elements representing the input Gaussian random field. In this case, the cost of the fast component-by-component algorithm for constructing the QMC points scales linearly in terms of the integration dimension. Abstract:We present the Quantum Monte Carlo Integration (QMCI) engine developed by Quantinuum. It is a quantum computational tool for evaluating multi-dimensional integrals that arise in various fields of science and engineering such as finance. This white paper presents a detailed description of the architecture of the QMCI engine, including a variety of distribution-loading methods, a novel quantum amplitude estimation method that improves the statistical robustness of QMCI calculations, and a library of statistical quantities that can be estimated. The QMCI engine is designed with modularity in mind, allowing for the continuous development of new quantum algorithms tailored in particular to financial applications. Additionally, the engine features a resource mode, which provides a precise resource quantification for the quantum circuits generated. The paper also includes extensive benchmarks that showcase the engine's performance, with a focus on the evaluation of various financial instruments.

Abstract:Gerber and Chopin [J. R. Stat. Soc. Ser. B. Stat. Methodol. 77 (2015) 509–579] recently introduced Sequential quasi-Monte Carlo (SQMC) algorithms as an efficient way to perform filtering in state–space models. The basic idea is to replace random variables with low-discrepancy point sets, so as to obtain faster convergence than with standard particle filtering. Gerber and Chopin (2015) describe briefly several ways to extend SQMC to smoothing, but do not provide supporting theory for this extension. We discuss more thoroughly how smoothing may be performed within SQMC, and derive convergence results for the so-obtained smoothing algorithms. We consider in particular SQMC equivalents of forward smoothing and forward filtering backward sampling, which are the most well-known smoothing techniques. As a preliminary step, we provide a generalization of the classical result of Hlawka and Mück [Computing (Arch. Elektron. Rechnen) 9 (1972) 127–138] on the transformation of QMC point sets into low discrepancy point sets with respect to non uniform distributions. As a corollary of the latter, we note that we can slightly weaken the assumptions to prove the consistency of SQMC.

Abstract:This paper presents MQGeometry , a multi-layer quasi-geostrophic (QG) equation solver for non-rectangular geometries. We advect the potential vorticity (PV) with finite volumes to ensure global PV conservation using a staggered discretization of the PV and stream function (SF). Thanks to this staggering, the PV is defined inside the domain, removing the need to define the PV on the domain boundary. We compute PV fluxes with upwind-biased interpolations whose implicit dissipation replaces the usual explicit (hyper-)viscous dissipation. The discretization presented here does not require tuning of any additional parameter, e.g., additional eddy viscosity. We solve the QG elliptic equation with a fast discrete sine transform spectral solver on rectangular geometry. We extend this fast solver to non-rectangular geometries using the capacitance matrix method. Subsequently, we validate our solver on a vortex-shear instability test case in a circular domain, on a vortex–wall interaction test case, and on an idealized wind-driven double-gyre configuration in an octagonal domain at an eddy-permitting resolution. Finally, we release a concise, efficient, and auto-differentiable PyTorch implementation of our method to facilitate future developments on this new discretization, e.g., machine-learning parameterization or data-assimilation techniques.

Abstract:Surface mapping plays an important role in geometric processing, which induces both area and angular distortions. If the angular distortion is bounded, the mapping is called a quasiconformal mapping (QC-Mapping). Many surface mappings in our physical world are quasiconformal. The angular distortion of a QC mapping can be represented by the Beltrami differentials. According to QC Teichmüller theory, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of Beltrami differentials and the set of QC surface mappings under normalization conditions. Therefore, every QC surface mapping can be fully determined by the Beltrami differential and reconstructed by solving the so-called Beltrami equation. In this work, we propose an effective method to solve the Beltrami equation on general Riemann surfaces. The solution is a QC mapping associated with the prescribed Beltrami differential. The main strategy is to define an auxiliary metric (AM) on the domain surface, such that the original QC mapping becomes conformal under the auxiliary metric. The desired QC-mapping can then be obtained by using the conventional conformal mapping method. In this paper, we first formulate a discrete analogue of QC mappings on triangular meshes. Then, we propose an algorithm to compute discrete QC mappings using the discrete Yamabe flow method. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first work to compute the discrete QC mappings for general Riemann surfaces, especially with different topologies. Numerically, the discrete QC mapping converges to the continuous solution as the mesh grid size approaches to 0. We tested our algorithm on surfaces scanned from real life with different topologies. Experimental results demonstrate the generality and accuracy of our auxiliary metric method.
Wasserstein Quantum Monte Carlo: A Novel Approach for Solving the Quantum Many-Body Schrödinger Equation

Abstract:Solving the quantum many-body Schrödinger equation is a fundamental and challenging problem in the fields of quantum physics, quantum chemistry, and material sciences. One of the common computational approaches to this problem is Quantum Variational Monte Carlo (QVMC), in which ground-state solutions are obtained by minimizing the energy of the system within a restricted family of parameterized wave functions. Deep learning methods partially address the limitations of traditional QVMC by representing a rich family of wave functions in terms of neural networks. However, the optimization objective in QVMC remains notoriously hard to minimize and requires second-order optimization methods such as natural gradient. In this paper, we first reformulate energy functional minimization in the space of Born distributions corresponding to particle-permutation (anti-)symmetric wave functions, rather than the space of wave functions. We then interpret QVMC as the Fisher-Rao gradient flow in this distributional space, followed by a projection step onto the variational manifold. This perspective provides us with a principled framework to derive new QMC algorithms, by endowing the distributional space with better metrics, and following the projected gradient flow induced by those metrics. More specifically, we propose "Wasserstein Quantum Monte Carlo" (WQMC), which uses the gradient flow induced by the Wasserstein metric, rather than Fisher-Rao metric, and corresponds to transporting the probability mass, rather than teleporting it. We demonstrate empirically that the dynamics of WQMC results in faster convergence to the ground state of molecular systems.

A parametrix method for elliptic surface PDEs

Abstract:Elliptic problems along smooth surfaces embedded in three dimensions occur in thin-membrane mechanics, electromagnetics (harmonic vector fields), and computational geometry. In this work, we present a parametrix-based integral equation method applicable to several forms of variable coefficient surface elliptic problems. Via the use of an approximate Green's function, the surface PDEs are transformed into well-conditioned integral equations. We demonstrate high-order numerical examples of this method applied to problems on general surfaces using a variant of the fast multipole method based on smooth interpolation properties of the kernel. Lastly, we discuss extensions of the method to surfaces with boundaries.

Abstract:Computing accurate yet efficient approximations to the solutions of the electronic Schrödinger equation has been a paramount challenge of computational chemistry for decades. Quantum Monte Carlo methods are a promising avenue of development as their core algorithm exhibits a number of favorable properties: it is highly parallel, and scales favorably with the considered system size, with an accuracy that is limited only by the choice of the wave function ansatz. The recently introduced machine-learned parametrizations of quantum Monte Carlo ansatzes rely on the efficiency of neural networks as universal function approximators to achieve state of the art accuracy on a variety of molecular systems. With interest in the field growing rapidly, there is a clear need for easy to use, modular, and extendable software libraries facilitating the development and adoption of this new class of methods. In this contribution, the DeepQMC program package is introduced, in an attempt to provide a common framework for future investigations by unifying many of the currently available deep-learning quantum Monte Carlo architectures. Furthermore, the manuscript provides a brief introduction to the methodology of variational quantum Monte Carlo in real space, highlights some technical challenges of optimizing neural network wave functions, and presents example black-box applications of the program package. We thereby intend to make this novel field accessible to a broader class of practitioners both from the quantum chemistry as well as the machine learning communities.
