Abstract:In this paper, we propose a queueing model to describe traffic breakdown phenomena caused by perturbations of on-ramp merging vehicles. In congested mainline traffic flow, we assume that a merging vehicle will trigger a jam queue formulation. If this jam queue cannot dissipate before the next vehicle merges into the main road, it could grow into a wide jam and eventually result in traffic breakdown. Different from many existing models that focused on the propagation of jam waves, the proposed model emphasizes the size evolution of a jam queue (local congested vehicle cluster) instead of its spatial evolutions. This new approach reduces analysis difficulties and allows us to directly link microscopic driving behaviors with macroscopic breakdown phenomena. Test results show that the simulated breakdown probability curve (parameter tuning using Next Generation Simulation vehicular trajectories) fits with the empirical breakdown probability curve that is estimated by Performance Measurement System (PeMS) data. This indicates that this new model can account for the probability of breakdown phenomena and help us set an appropriate inflow rate so as to void breakdown and meanwhile maintain a high road capacity.

Abstract:Traffic incidents bring disruptions to the smooth movement of vehicles and have a spillover effect on the traffic in urban road networks. Although there has been a large number of studies that attempt to estimate spatiotemporal impact of traffic incidents, most, if not all, of them focus on the incident that occurs on a stretch of freeway. In contrast to the freeway where road sections follow the order of a straight line, the complex topological structure of road networks poses challenges for estimating the impact region of the incident. In this research, we develop an integer programming model with a set of novel constraints to formulate the spatiotemporal evolution of incident impact in urban road networks. The interdependence of incident impact on adjacent links is characterized by leveraging the propagation of shockwaves. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments using simulation data to validate our model and present the potential application of our model in real world. Results demonstrate that our model is able to achieve satisfactory performance in capturing the spatiotemporal evolution of incident impact and quantifying the incident-induced delay.
On the Aw-Rascle-Zhang traffic models with nonlocal look-ahead interactions

Our model includes a specific nonlocal Arrhenius-type look-ahead slowdown factor. We establish both local and global well-posedness theories for these nonlocal ARZ models.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents a new class of one-dimensional (1D) traffic models with look-ahead rules that take into account of two effects: nonlocal slow-down effect and right-skewed non-concave asymmetry in the fundamental diagram. The proposed 1D cellular automata (CA) models with the Arrhenius type look-ahead interactions implement stochastic rules for cars' movement following the configuration of the traffic ahead of each car. In particular, we take two different look-ahead rules: one is based on the distance from the car under consideration to the car in front of it; the other one depends on the car density ahead. Both rules feature a novel idea of multiple moves, which plays a key role in recovering the non-concave flux in the macroscopic dynamics. Through a semi-discrete mesoscopic stochastic process, we derive the coarse-grained macroscopic dynamics of the CA model. We also design a numerical scheme to simulate the proposed CA models with an efficient list-based kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) algorithm. Our results show that the fluxes of the KMC simulations agree with the coarse-grained macroscopic averaged fluxes for the different look-ahead rules under various parameter settings.</p>
Learning "Look-Ahead" Nonlocal Traffic Dynamics in a Ring Road

Abstract:The macroscopic traffic flow model is widely used for traffic control and management. To incorporate drivers' anticipative behaviors and to remove impractical speed discontinuity inherent in the classic Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) traffic model, nonlocal partial differential equation (PDE) models with ``look-ahead" dynamics have been proposed, which assume that the speed is a function of weighted downstream traffic density. However, it lacks data validation on two important questions: whether there exist nonlocal dynamics, and how the length and weight of the ``look-ahead" window affect the spatial temporal propagation of traffic densities. In this paper, we adopt traffic trajectory data from a ring-road experiment and design a physics-informed neural network to learn the fundamental diagram and look-ahead kernel that best fit the data, and reinvent a data-enhanced nonlocal LWR model via minimizing the loss function combining the data discrepancy and the nonlocal model discrepancy. Results show that the learned nonlocal LWR yields a more accurate prediction of traffic wave propagation in three different scenarios: stop-and-go oscillations, congested, and free traffic. We first demonstrate the existence of ``look-ahead" effect with real traffic data. The optimal nonlocal kernel is found out to take a length of around 35 to 50 meters, and the kernel weight within 5 meters accounts for the majority of the nonlocal effect. Our results also underscore the importance of choosing a priori physics in machine learning models.

Abstract:We present a network formulation for a traffic flow model with nonlocal velocity in the flux function. The modeling framework includes suitable coupling conditions at intersections to either ensure maximum flux or distribution parameters. In particular, we focus on 1-to-1, 2-to-1 and 1-to-2 junctions. Based on an upwind type numerical scheme, we prove the maximum principle and the existence of weak solutions on networks. We also investigate the limiting behavior of the proposed models when the nonlocal influence tends to infinity. Numerical examples show the difference between the proposed coupling conditions and a comparison to the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards network model.

Abstract:In this study, a new car-following model is established aiming to predict the variation of vehicle headways on urban road. The linear stability condition is derived corresponding to the prevision of headway in moving. The modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) equation is deduced through the nonlinear analysis. The kink–antikink soliton solution of the mKdV equation can interpret the urban traffic jams near the critical point under the prevision of vehicle headway. Moreover, it is clear that the prevision of headway effect did improve the stability of urban traffic flow since the traffic jams are alleviated efficiently by taking into account the prevision of headway term in numerical simulations, which are consistent with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:We propose and study a one-dimensional traffic flow cellular automaton model of high-speed vehicles with the Fukui–Ishibashi-type (FI) acceleration rule for all cars, and the Nagel–Schreckenberg-type (NS) stochastic delay mechanism. We obtain analytically the fundamental diagrams of the average speed and vehicle flux depending on the vehicle density and stochastic delay probability. Our theoretical results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:We propose and study a one-dimensional traffic flow cellular automaton model of high-speed vehicles with the Fukui-Ishibashi-type acceleration for all cars, and the Nagel-Schreckenberg-type (NS) stochastic delay only for cars following the trail of the car ahead. The main difference in the delay scenario between our model and the NS model is that a car with spacing ahead longer than the velocity limit M may not be delayed in our model. By using a car-oriented mean-field theory, we analytically derive fundamental diagrams of the average speed as a function of the car density. Our theoretical results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:The emerging connected and automated vehicle technologies allow vehicles to perceive and process traffic information in a wide spatial range. Modeling nonlocal interactions between connected vehicles and analyzing their impact on traffic flows become important research questions to traffic planners. This paper considers a particular nonlocal LWR model that has been studied in the literature. The model assumes that vehicle velocities are controlled by the traffic density distribution in a nonlocal spatial neighborhood. By conducting stability analysis of the model, we obtain that, under suitable assumptions on how the nonlocal information is utilized, the nonlocal traffic flow is stable around the uniform equilibrium flow and all traffic waves dissipate exponentially. Meanwhile, improper use of the nonlocal information in the vehicle velocity selection could result in persistent traffic waves. Such results can shed light to the future design of driving algorithms for connected and automated vehicles.

Abstract:Stochasticity is becoming increasingly essential in traffic flow research, given its notable influence in several applications, such as real-time traffic management. To consider stochasticity in macroscopic traffic flow modeling, this paper introduces a stochastic Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (SLWR) model, which not only captures equilibrium values in steady-state conditions but also describes stochastic variabilities. The SLWR model follows a conservation law, in which the free-flow speed is randomized to represent heterogeneities of drivers. To more accurately reflect real-life traffic patterns, a nonlinear speed-density relationship is considered. For addressing this highly nonlinear problem, a dynamically bi-orthogonal (DyBO) method is coupled with the Taylor series expansion technique. The results of simulation experiments show that the SLWR model can effectively describe the evolution of stochastic dynamic traffic with temporal or geometric bottlenecks. Moreover, the DyBO solutions exhibit reasonable accuracy while significantly reducing computation costs compared with the Monte Carlo method.

Abstract:In order to study the temporal and spatial evolution law of day-to-day network flow under short-time disturbance, network perspective travel time is computed according to past travel experience. With the pursuit goal of maximizing the punctual probability and path prospect, a model is established to adjust schemed departure time and route. On departure day, network travel time is updated again according to the real-time information of each period before departure, and actual departure time and route are readjusted to obtain the actual travel choice. So a model of considering real-time information on departure day is established to describe daily evolution of road network traffic. Finally, a numerical example to verify the model and algorithm, the results show that:in case of no accident, considering adjustment on departure day, flow distribution has smaller amplitude but longer time for stability; in case of accident occurring before stability, the stable flow distribution will be affected, but occurring after stability, the result is opposed;accident will increase flow shock when consider re-adjustment.

Abstract:This paper proposes two lattice traffic models by taking into account the drivers' delay in response. The lattice versions of the hydrodynamic model are described by the differential-difference equation and difference-difference equation, respectively. The stability conditions for the two models are obtained by using the linear stability theory. The modified KdV equation near the critical point is derived to describe the traffic jam by using the reductive perturbation method, and the kink–antikink soliton solutions related to the traffic density waves are obtained. The results show that the drivers' delay in sensing headway plays an important role in jamming transition.

Abstract:Two kinds of Riemann solutions for the Aw-Rascle hydrodynamic traffic flow model with the logarithmic equation of state are explicitly obtained by using the combination between 1-rarefaction or 1-shock wave along with 2-contact discontinuity. The formation of vacuum state and delta shock wave is identified and analyzed when the perturbation parameter in the pressure term drops to zero, where the intrinsic cavitation and concentration phenomena are surveyed and explored concretely. Additionally, several numerical results displaying the formation process of vacuum state and delta shock wave are also presented by taking three different perturbation parameters for comparison.

Abstract:Additional to the basic Nagel–Schreckenberg model for single-lane traffic flow, we consider the effect of the velocity-difference between two successive vehicles on the randomization of the latter one. This modification improves the transit capacity of the model, which results in a much higher simulated flux. Moreover, in a circular road, this model simulates an abnormal hysteresis effect. The characteristic shape of hysteresis curves may shed some light on the distinguish of synchronized flow and jams.

Abstract:A traffic flow model describing the formation and dynamics of traffic jams was introduced by Berthelin et al. [5], which consists of a pressureless gas dynamics system under a maximal constraint on the density and can be derived from the Aw-Rascle model under the constraint condition by letting the traffic pressure vanish. In this paper, we give up this constraint condition and consider the following form in which The Riemann problem for the above traffic flow model are solved constructively. The delta shock wave arises in the Riemann solutions, although the system is strictly hyperbolic, its first eigenvalue is genuinely nonlinear and the second eigenvalue is linearly degenerate. Furthermore, we clarify the generalized Rankine-Hugoniot relations and -entropy condition. The position, strength and propagation speed of the delta shock wave are obtained from the generalized Rankine-Hugoniot conditions. The delta shock may be useful for the description of the serious traffic jam. More importantly, it is proved that the limits of the Riemann solutions of the above traffic flow model are exactly those of the pressureless gas dynamics system with the same Riemann initial data as the traffic pressure vanishes.

Abstract:We prove the well-posedness of weak entropy solutions of a scalar non-local traffic flow model with time delay. Existence is obtained by convergence of finite volume approximate solutions constructed by Lax-Friedrich and Hilliges-Weidlich schemes, while the L1 stability with respect to the initial data and the delay parameter relies on a Kruzkov-type doubling of variable technique.Numerical tests are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed schemes, as well as the solution dependence on the delay and look-ahead parameters.

Abstract:A new lattice hydrodynamic model is proposed by considering the interruption probability effect on traffic flow with passing and analyzed both theoretically and numerically. From linear and non-linear stability analysis, the effect of interruption probability on the phase diagram is investigated and the condition of existence for kink–antikink soliton solution of mKdV equation is derived. The stable region is enhanced with interruption probability and the jamming transition occurs from uniform flow to kink flow through chaotic flow for higher and intermediate values of non-interruption effect of passing. It is also observed that there exists conventional jamming transition between uniform flow and kink flow for lower values of non-interruption effect of passing. Numerical simulations are carried out and found in accordance with the theoretical findings which confirm that the effect of interruption probability plays an important role in stabilizing traffic flow when passing is allowed.

An anisotropic traffic flow model with look-ahead effect for mixed autonomy traffic

Abstract:In this paper we extend the Aw-Rascle-Zhang (ARZ) non-equilibrium traffic flow model to take into account the look-ahead capability of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), and the mixed flow dynamics of human driven and autonomous vehicles. The look-ahead effect of CAVs is captured by a non-local averaged density within a certain distance (the look-ahead distance). We show, using wave perturbation analysis, that increased look-ahead distance loosens the stability criteria. Our numerical experiments, however, showed that a longer look-ahead distance does not necessarily lead to faster convergence to equilibrium states. We also examined the impact of spatial distributions and market penetrations of CAVs and showed that increased market penetration helps stabilizing mixed traffic while the spatial distribution of CAVs have less effect on stability. The results revealed the potential of using CAVs to stabilize traffic, and may provide qualitative insights on speed control in the mixed autonomy environment.

Abstract:Oblique shock waves are unavoidable in a rectangular hypersonic inlet, leading to a non-uniform flow field. While a significant body of the literature exists regarding the shock train modeling in a uniform incoming flow condition, few efforts have focused on the shock train behavior considering the influence of the shock wave boundary layer interactions. A low-order dynamic model of the shock train has been constructed with the help of the free interaction theory and a 1-D analysis approach. Experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out to evaluate the low-order model. The results show that the model has the capability of qualitatively analyzing the shock train behavior. In the cases with incident shocks, the rapid forward movement of the shock train has been observed by experiment. Besides this phenomenon was also modeled using the low-order model. Schlieren images show that when the shock train approaches the interaction zone, its behavior is characterized by oscillation and then follows a rapid forward movement with a linear increasing backpressure at 2.7 Ma. This phenomenon is analyzed theoretically based on the free interaction theory. Meanwhile with the help of the direct numerical simulation results from some existing studies, the flow structures in the interaction region and the following boundary layer also provide the evidence.
