Abstract:Large Language Models (LLMs), such as the LLaMA model, have demonstrated their effectiveness in various general-domain natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Nevertheless, LLMs have not yet performed optimally in biomedical domain tasks due to the need for medical expertise in the responses. In response to this challenge, we propose HuaTuo, a LLaMA-based model that has been supervised-fine-tuned with generated QA (Question-Answer) instances. The experimental results demonstrate that HuaTuo generates responses that possess more reliable medical knowledge. Our proposed HuaTuo model is accessible at this https URL.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main goal of this paper is to address the poor performance of large language models (LLMs) in biomedical tasks. Specifically, while existing large language models perform well in general natural language processing tasks, they fall short in tasks requiring specialized medical knowledge. This shortcoming can lead to reduced diagnostic accuracy, incorrect drug recommendations, and inappropriate medical advice, potentially endangering patient health. To solve this problem, the research team proposed the HuaTuo model, a new language model based on the LLaMA model and fine-tuned with supervision for Chinese medical knowledge. By integrating both structured and unstructured Chinese medical knowledge graphs (CMeKG), HuaTuo aims to generate more reliable and professional medical responses. Additionally, the paper introduces a new evaluation metric, SUS (Safety, Usability, and Smoothness), to assess the model's performance in the biomedical field. Experimental results show that the HuaTuo model significantly improves the practicality of knowledge while ensuring safety.
