What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores how to utilize Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) to enhance the performance of future Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems and proposes several possible application scenarios and technical directions. Specifically, the paper attempts to address the following issues: 1. **Enhancing the spatial multiplexing level of MIMO systems**: By increasing the degrees of freedom of the channel to improve spatial multiplexing capability, especially in the presence of strong Line-of-Sight (LOS) communication links, the number of available eigenchannels can be increased, thereby supporting more parallel data transmissions. 2. **Joint active and passive beamforming**: By optimizing the beamforming at the transmitter and the reflection phase of the RIS, the received signal power can be increased, thereby enhancing system capacity. This requires precise Channel State Information (CSI) and typically involves solving non-convex optimization problems. 3. **RIS reflection modulation**: By adjusting the phase of RIS elements, data transmission can be achieved without additional hardware, thereby improving spectral efficiency. 4. **Virtual MIMO transmission**: Utilizing RIS as a virtual MIMO terminal, even without Radio Frequency (RF) links, spatial-temporal coding and other techniques can be realized by adjusting the phase of the RIS. Additionally, the paper discusses the application of RIS in interference suppression, such as reducing inter-cell, inter-user, and inter-antenna interference through its signal nulling capability. Although RIS theoretically offers many advantages, practical deployment still faces challenges, such as how to configure RIS in real-time without relying on complex signal processing and channel state information acquisition. In summary, this paper aims to address the challenges faced by MIMO systems in future wireless networks by introducing RIS technology, including but not limited to improving energy efficiency, reducing costs, and providing guidance for future research directions.
