Abstract:This perspective paper deals with an overview of particle-in-cell / Monte Carlo collision models applied to different plasma-propulsion configurations and scenarios, from electrostatic (E x B and pulsed arc) devices to electromagnetic (RF inductive, helicon, electron cyclotron resonance) thrusters, with an emphasis on plasma plumes and their interaction with the satellite. The most important elements related to the modeling of plasma-wall interaction are also presented. Finally, the paper reports new progress in the particle-in-cell computational methodology, in particular regarding accelerating computational techniques for multi-dimensional simulations and plasma chemistry Monte Carlo modules for molecular and alternative propellant

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper The paper primarily focuses on the application of particle simulation techniques in plasma propulsion systems and attempts to address the following issues: 1. **Understanding Key Plasma Processes**: - Key processes in the complex partially magnetized plasma inside plasma thrusters, such as electron heating, electron and ion transport, plasma-wall interactions, and ion-induced erosion. - Research on alternative propellants. 2. **Limitations of Experimental Characterization**: - Difficulty in obtaining reliable diagnostic data under laboratory conditions, as equipment typically does not allow direct and non-intrusive access. - The impact of ground test facilities on thruster performance (e.g., variations in background pressure within the chamber affecting thruster operation). - Difficulty in replicating natural operating conditions, such as typical space environments or atmospheric flows. 3. **Importance of Numerical Simulation**: - Numerical simulation is crucial for understanding discharge configurations and the interaction between plasma plumes and spacecraft, especially in actual geometries. - If these 3D numerical tools can be made available to the industry, they can improve the efficiency of existing products and promote breakthroughs in new designs. Through the above research, the paper aims to advance the numerical simulation technology of plasma propulsion systems to better understand and optimize the design and performance of plasma thrusters.
