Abstract:In this work, we study unique continuation properties of Robin boundary value problems with Robin potentials $\eta \in L_{d-1+\varepsilon}$. Our results generalize earlier ones where $\eta$ was assumed to be either zero (Neumann problem) or differentiable.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend our earlier unique continuation results \cite{PZ2} for the Schrödinger-type inequality $ |\bar\partial u| \le V|u|$ on a domain in $\mathbb C^n$ by removing the smoothness assumption on solutions $u = (u_1, \ldots, u_N)$. More specifically, we establish the unique continuation property for $W_{loc}^{1,1}$ solutions when the potential $V\in L_{loc}^p $, $ p>2n$; and for $W_{loc}^{1,2n+\epsilon}$ solutions when $V\in L_{loc}^{2n}$ with $N=1$ or $n = 2$. Although the unique continuation property fails in general if $V\in L_{loc}^{p}, p<2n$, we show that the property still holds for $W_{loc}^{1,1}$ solutions when $V $ is a small constant multiple of $ \frac{1}{|z|}$.

Unique continuation of Schrödinger-type equations for $\bar\partial$

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study the unique continuation property for a Schrödinger-type equation $ \bar\partial u = Vu$ on a domain in $\mathbb C^n$, where the solution $u$ may be a scalar function, or a vector-valued function. While simple examples show that the unique continuation property fails in general if the potential $V\in L^{p}, p<2n$, we first prove that, in the case when $u $ is a scalar function, the unique continuation property holds when $V\in L_{loc}^{2n}$ and is $\bar\partial$-closed. For vector-valued smooth solutions, we establish the unique continuation property either when $V\in L_{loc}^p $, $ p>2n$ for $n\ge 3$, or when $V\in L_{loc}^{2n}$ for $n = 2$. Finally, we discuss the unique continuation property for some special cases where $V\notin L_{loc}^{2n}$, for instance, $V $ is a constant multiple of $ \frac{1}{|z|}$.

Abstract:In this paper we address the uniqueness issue in the classical Robin inverse problem on a Lipschitz domain Ω⊂Rn, with L∞ Robin coefficient, L2 Neumann data and conductivity of class W1,r(Ω), r>n. We show that uniqueness of the Robin coefficient on a subpart of the boundary, given Cauchy data on the complementary part, does hold in dimension n=2 but needs not hold in higher dimension. We also raise on open issue on harmonic gradients which is of interest in this context.

The boundary doubling inequality is derived from the combination of local Carleman estimates and global Carleman estimates. Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the quantitative unique continuation property of solutions to \begin{equation*} \Delta^2u=Vu, \end{equation*} where $V\in W^{1,\infty}$. We show that the maximal vanishing order of the solutions is not large than \begin{equation} C\left(\|V\|^{\frac{1}{4}}_{L^{\infty}}+\|\nabla V\|_{L^{\infty}}+1\right). \end{equation} Our key argument is to lift the original equation to that with a positive potential, then decompose the resulted fourth-order equation into a special system of two second-order equations. Based on the special system, we define a variant frequency function with weights and derive its almost monotonicity to establishing some doubling inequalities with explicit dependence on the Sobolev norm of the potential function.

Unique continuation principles for finite-element discretizations of the Laplacian

Abstract:Unique continuation principles are fundamental properties of elliptic partial differential equations, giving conditions that guarantee that the solution to an elliptic equation must be uniformly zero. Since finite-element discretizations are a natural tool to help gain understanding into elliptic equations, it is natural to ask if such principles also hold at the discrete level. In this work, we prove a version of the unique continuation principle for piecewise-linear and -bilinear finite-element discretizations of the Laplacian eigenvalue problem on polygonal domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Namely, we show that any solution to the discretized equation $-\Delta u = \lambda u$ with vanishing Dirichlet and Neumann traces must be identically zero under certain geometric and topological assumptions on the resulting triangulation. We also provide a counterexample, showing that a nonzero \emph{inner solution} exists when the topological assumptions are not satisfied. Finally, we give an application to an eigenvalue interlacing problem, where the space of inner solutions makes an explicit appearance.

Unique continuation for a gradient inequality with $L^n$ potential

Abstract:We establish a unique continuation property for solutions of the differential inequality $|\nabla u|\leq V|u|$, where $V$ is locally $L^n$ integrable on a domain in $\mathbb R^n$. A stronger uniqueness result is obtained if in addition the solutions are locally Lipschitz. One application is a finite order vanishing property in the $L^2$ sense for the exponential of $W^{1,n}$ functions. We further discuss related results for the Cauchy-Riemann operator $\bar\partial$ and characterize the vanishing order for smooth extension of holomorphic functions across the boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, the existence of smooth positive solutions to a Robin boundary-value problem with non-homogeneous differential operator and reaction given by a nonlinear convection term plus a singular one is established. Proofs chiefly exploit sub-super-solution and truncation techniques, set-valued analysis, recursive methods, nonlinear regularity theory, as well as fixed point arguments. Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence and the summability of solutions to a Robin boundary value problem whose prototype is the following: $$ \begin{cases} -\text{div}(b(|u|)\nabla u)=f &\text{in }\Omega,\\[.2cm] \displaystyle\frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}+\beta u=0 &\text{on }\partial\Omega \end{cases} $$ where $\Omega$ is a bounded Lipschitz domain in $\mathbb R^N$, $N>2$, $\beta>0$, $b(s)$ is a positive function which may vanish at infinity and $f$ belongs to a suitable Lebesgue space. The presence of such a function $b$ in the principal part of the operator prevents it from being uniformly elliptic when $u$ is large.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the quantitative estimates of the unique continuation property for solutions of an elliptic equation $\Delta u = V u + W_1 \cdot \nabla u + \hbox{div} (W_2 u)$ in an open, connected subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $d \geq 3$. Here, $V \in L^{q_0}$, $W_1 \in L^{q_1}$, and $W_2 \in L^{q_2}$ with $q_0 > d/2$, $q_1 > d$, and $q_2 > d$. Our aim is to provide an explicit quantification of the unique continuation property with respect to the norms of the potentials. To achieve this, we revisit the Carleman estimates established in [Dehman-Ervedoza-Thabouti-2023] and prove a refined version of them, and we combine them with an argument due to T. Wolff introduced in [Wolff-1992] for the proof of unique continuation for solutions of equations of the form $\Delta u = V u + W_1 \cdot \nabla u$.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the uniqueness of the critical point for stable solutions of the Robin problem \[ \begin{cases} -\Delta u=f(u)&\text{in }\Omega\\ u>0&\text{in }\Omega\\ \partial_\nu u+\beta u=0&\text{on }\partial\Omega, \end{cases} \] where $\Omega\subseteq\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth and bounded domain with strictly positive curvature of the boundary, $f\ge0$ is a smooth function and $\beta>0$. Moreover, for $\beta$ large the result fails as soon as the domain is no more convex, even if it is very close to be: indeed, in this case it is possible to find solutions with an arbitrary large number of critical points.

Abstract:In this paper, we established a quantitative unique continuation results for a coupled heat equations, with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, on a bounded convex domain Ω of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with smooth boundary ∂Ω. Our result shows that the value of the solutions can be determined uniquely by its value on an arbitrary open subset ω of Ω at any given positive time T.

Abstract:We consider finite element approximations of unique continuation problems subject to elliptic equations in the case where the normal derivative of the exact solution is known to reside in some finite dimensional space. To give quantitative error estimates we prove Lipschitz stability of the unique continuation problem in the global H1-norm. This stability is then leveraged to derive optimal a posteriori and a priori error estimates for a primal-dual stabilised finite method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study fractional -Laplacian Schrödinger-type equations for Robin boundary conditions. Under some suitable assumptions, we show that two solutions exist using the mountain pass lemma and Ekeland's variational principle. Then, the existence of infinitely many solutions is derived by applying the fountain theorem and the Krasnoselskii genus theory, respectively. Different from previous results, the topic of this paper is the Robin boundary conditions in for fractional order -Laplacian Schrödinger-type equations, including concave-convex nonlinearities, which has not been studied before. In addition, two examples are given to illustrate our results.

Abstract:Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a quasiconvex Lipschitz domain and $A(x)$ be a $d \times d$ uniformly elliptic, symmetric matrix with Lipschitz coefficients. Assume a nontrivial $u$ solves $-\nabla \cdot (A(x) \nabla u) = 0$ in $\Omega$, and $u$ vanishes on $\Sigma = \partial \Omega \cap B$ for some ball $B$. The main contribution of this paper is to demonstrate the existence of a countable collection of open balls $(B_i)_i$ such that the restriction of $u$ to $B_i \cap \Omega$ maintains a consistent sign. Furthermore, for any compact subset $K$ of $\Sigma$, the set difference $K \setminus \bigcup_i B_i$ is shown to possess a Minkowski dimension that is strictly less than $d - 1 - \epsilon$. As a consequence, we prove Lin's conjecture in quasiconvex domains.

Abstract:This paper is inspired by Wang, Wang and Zhang's work [ Observability and unique continuation inequalities for the Schr\"odinger equation. J. Eur. Math. Soc. 21, 3513--3572 (2019)], where they present several observability and unique continuation inequalities for the free Schr\"{o}dinger equation in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. We extend all such observability and unique continuation inequalities for the Schr\"{o}dinger equations on half-line with inverse-square potentials. Technically, the proofs essentially rely on the representation of the solution, a Nazarov type uncertainty principle for the Hankel transform and an interpolation inequality for functions whose Hankel transform have compact support.

Abstract:We prove a local unique continuation result for Schr\''odinger operators with time independent Lipschitz metrics and lower order terms which are Gevrey 2 in time and bounded in space. This implies global unique continuation from any open set in a connected Riemannian manifold. These results relax in the same geometric setting the analyticity assumption in time of the Tataru-Robbiano-Zuily-H\''ormander theorem for these operators. The proof is based on (i) a Tataru-Robbiano-Zuily-H\''ormander type Carleman estimate with a nonlocal weight adapted to the anisotropy of the Schr\''odinger operator and (ii) the description of the conjugation of the Schr\''odinger operator with Gevrey coefficients by this nonlocal weight.
