Abstract:For $h=3$ and $h=4$ we prove the existence of infinite $B_h$ sequences $\B$ with counting function $$\mathcal{B}(x)= x^{\sqrt{(h-1)^2+1}-(h-1) + o(1)}.$$ This result extends a construction of I. Ruzsa for $B_2$ sequences.

Abstract:The sequence starts with a(1) = 1; to extend it one writes the sequence so far as XY^k, where X and Y are strings of integers, Y is nonempty and k is as large as possible: then the next term is k. The sequence begins 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, ... A 4 appears for the first time at position 220, but a 5 does not appear until about position 10^{10^{23}}. The main result of the paper is a proof that the sequence is unbounded. We also present results from extensive numerical investigations of the sequence and of certain derived sequences, culminating with a heuristic argument that t (for t=5,6, ...) appears for the first time at about position 2^(2^(3^(4^(5^...^({(t-2)}^{(t-1)}))))), where ^ denotes exponentiation. The final section discusses generalizations.

Abstract:For a fixed integer $k$, we define a sequence $A_k=(a_k(n))_{n\geq0}$ and a corresponding sparse subsequence $S_k$ using the cardinality of the $n$-th symmetric power of the set $\{1,2,\ldots, k\}$. For $k\in\{2,\dots,8\}$, we find recursive formulas for $S_k$, and show that the values $a_{k}(0)$, $a_{k}(1)$, and $a_{k}(3)$ are sufficient for constructing $A_{k}$.

Abstract:Given a well-quasi-order $X$ and an ordinal $\alpha$, the set $s^F_\alpha(X)$ of transfinite strings on $X$ with length less than $\alpha$ and with finite image is also a well-quasi-order, as proven by Nash-Williams. Before Nash-Williams proved it for general $\alpha$, however, it was proven for $\alpha<\omega^\omega$ by Erdős and Rado. In this paper, we revisit Erdős and Rado's proof and improve upon it, using it to obtain upper bounds on the maximum linearization of $s^F_{\omega^k}(X)$ in terms of $k$ and $o(X)$, where $o(X)$ denotes the maximum linearization of $X$. We show that, for fixed $k$, $o(s^F_{\omega^k}(X))$ is bounded above by a function which can roughly be described as $(k+1)$-times exponential in $o(X)$. We also show that, for $k\le 2$, this bound is not far from tight.

Abstract:Inspired by Episode 3 of the Japanese manga "Seisu-tan" by Doom Kobayashi and Shin-ichiro Seki, we investigate the $k$-Göbel sequence $(g_{k,n})_n$ named after Fritz Göbel. Although the sequence is generally defined as rational, quite a few initial terms behave like an integer sequence. This article addresses a question raised in Seisu-tan and shows that $g_{k,n}$ is always an integer for any $k \geq 2$ and $0 \leq n \leq 18$.

Abstract:A sequence $\{x_{n}\}_1^\infty$ in $[0,1)$ is called Borel-Cantelli (BC) if for all non-increasing sequences of positive real numbers $\{a_n\}$ with $\underset{i=1}{\overset{\infty}{\sum}}a_i=\infty$ the set \[\underset{k=1}{\overset{\infty}{\cap}} \underset{n=k}{\overset{\infty}{\cup}} B(x_n, a_n))=\{x\in[0,1)\mid |x_n-x|<a_n \text{for} \infty \text{many}n\geq1\}\] has full Lebesgue measure. (To put it informally, BC sequences are sequences for which a natural converse to the Borel-Cantelli Theorem holds). The notion of BC sequences is motivated by the Monotone Shrinking Target Property for dynamical systems, but our approach is from a geometric rather than dynamical perspective. A sufficient condition, a necessary condition and a necessary and sufficient condition for a sequence to be BC are established. A number of examples of BC and not BC sequences are presented. The property of a sequence to be BC is a delicate diophantine property. For example, the orbits of a pseudo-Anosoff IET (interval exchange transformation) are BC while the orbits of a "generic" IET are not. The notion of BC sequences is extended to more general spaces.

Abstract:The numbers we study in this paper are of the form B n , p ( k ) , which is the number of binary words of length n that contain the word p (as a subsequence, not necessarily consecutive in the word) exactly k times. Our motivation comes from the analogous study of pattern containment in permutations. In our first set of results, we obtain explicit expressions for B n , p ( k ) for small values of k. We then focus on words p with at most 3 runs and study the maximum number of occurrences of p a word of length n can have. We also study the internal zeros in the sequence ( B n , p ( k ) ) k ≥ 0 for fixed n and discuss the unimodality and log-concavity of such sequences.

On Frobenius Formulas of Power Sequences

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n)$ be a sequence of relative prime integers, each greater than or equal to 2. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ represents the largest integer that cannot be expressed as a nonnegative linear combination of the elements in $A$. Our recent work has introduced a combinatorial method for calculating $g(A)$ in the specific form $A=(a, a+B)=(a, a+b_1, \ldots, a+b_k)$. This method reduces the problem to a simpler optimization problem, denoted as $O_B(M)$. In this paper, we apply this method to solve the open problem of characterizing $g(A)$ for the square sequence $A=(a,a+1,a+2^2,\ldots, a+k^2)$. We demonstrate that the Frobenius number $g(a, a+1^2, a+2^2, \ldots)$ for the infinite square sequence admits a simpler solution. This is because the corresponding optimization problem, $O_B(M)$, can be solved by applying number-theoretic principles, specifically Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem and related results. Consequently, we are able to resolve the open problem by utilizing Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem in conjunction with generating functions.

The Frobenius Formula for $A=(a,ha+d,ha+b_2d,...,ha+b_kd)$

Abstract:Given relative prime positive integers $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$, the Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the largest integer not representable as a linear combination of the $a_i$'s with nonnegative integer coefficients. We find the ``Stable" property introduced for the square sequence $A=(a,a+1,a+2^2,\dots, a+k^2)$ naturally extends for $A(a)=(a,ha+dB)=(a,ha+d,ha+b_2d,...,ha+b_kd)$. This gives a parallel characterization of $g(A(a))$ as a ``congruence class function" modulo $b_k$ when $a$ is large enough. For orderly sequence $B=(1,b_2,\dots,b_k)$, we find good bound for $a$. In particular we calculate $g(a,ha+dB)$ for $B=(1,2,b,b+1)$, $B=(1,2,b,b+1,2b)$, $B=(1,b,2b-1)$ and $B=(1,2,...,k,K)$. Our idea also applies to the case $B=(b_1,b_2,...,b_k)$, $b_1> 1$.

Finite sequences of integers expressible as sums of two squares

Abstract:This paper is concerned with finite sequences of integers that may be written as sums of squares of two nonzero integers. We first find infinitely many integers $n$ such that $n, n+h$ and $n+k$ are all sums of two squares where $h$ and $k$ are two arbitrary integers, and as an immediate corollary obtain, in parametric terms, three consecutive integers that are sums of two squares. Similarly we obtain $n$ in parametric terms such that all the four integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4$ are sums of two squares. We also find infinitely many integers $n$ such that all the five integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4, n+5$ are sums of two squares, and finally, we find infinitely many arithmetic progressions, with common difference $4$, of five integers all of which are sums of two squares.

Abstract:The linear complexity and k-error linear complexity of sequences are important measures of the strength of key-streams generated by stream ciphers. Fu et al. studied the distribution of 2(n)-periodic binary sequences with 1-error linear complexity in their SETA 2006 paper. Recently, people have strenuously promoted the solving of this problem from k = 2 to k = 4 step by step. Unfortunately, it still remains difficult to obtain the solutions for larger k. In this paper, we propose a new sieve method to solve this problem. We first define an equivalence relationship on error sequences and build a relation between the number of sequences with given k-error linear complexity and the number of pair-wise non-equivalent error sequences. We introduce the concept of cube fragment and build specific equivalence relation based on the concept of the cube classes to figure out the number of pair-wise non-equivalent error sequences. By establishing counting functions for several base cases and building recurrence relations for different cases of k and L, it is easy to manually get the complete counting function when k is not too large. And an efficient algorithm can be derived from this method to solve the problem using a computer when k is large.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the linear space of all two-sided generalized Fibonacci sequences $\{F_n\}_{n \in \mathbb{Z}}$ that satisfy the recurrence equation of order $k$: $F_n = F_{n-1} + F_{n-2} + \dots + F_{n-k}$. We give two types of explicit formula, one is based on generalized binomial coefficients and the other based on generalized multinomial coefficients.

Abstract:Examples of d-perfect sequences are constructed based on the method in Xing et al [8]. In particular examples of 1-perfect sequences based on genus 0 curves over binary and the ternary fields are computed, as are 2-perfect binary sequences based on an elliptic curve. The complexity profile of certain of the 2-perfect sequences are experimentally determined to follow that of 1-perfect sequences. Based on two algebraic reformulations of the known characterization of binary 1-perfect sequences, these sequences are proved to be 1-perfect.
Pattern Avoidance for Fibonacci Sequences using $k$-Regular Words

Abstract:Two $k$-ary Fibonacci recurrences are $a_k(n) = a_k(n-1) + k \cdot a_k(n-2)$ and $b_k(n) = k \cdot b_k(n-1) + b_k(n-2)$. We provide a simple proof that $a_k(n)$ is the number of $k$-regular words over $[n] = \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ that avoid patterns $\{121, 123, 132, 213\}$ when using base cases $a_k(0) = a_k(1) = 1$ for any $k \geq 1$. This was previously proven by Kuba and Panholzer in the context of Wilf-equivalence for restricted Stirling permutations, and it creates Simion and Schmidt's classic result on the Fibonacci sequence when $k=1$, and the Jacobsthal sequence when $k=2$. We complement this theorem by proving that $b_k(n)$ is the number of $k$-regular words over $[n]$ that avoid $\{122, 213\}$ with $b_k(0) = b_k(1) = 1$ for any~$k \geq 2$. Finally, we conjecture that $|Av^{2}_{n}(\underline{121}, 123, 132, 213)| = a_1(n)^2$ for $n \geq 0$. That is, vincularizing the Stirling pattern in Kuba and Panholzer's Jacobsthal result gives the Fibonacci-squared numbers.

Abstract:The critical exponent of an infinite word $\bf x$ is the supremum, over all finite nonempty factors $f$, of the exponent of $f$. In this note we show that for all integers $k\geq 2,$ there is a binary infinite $k$-automatic sequence with critical exponent $\leq 7/3$. The same conclusion holds for Fibonacci-automatic and Tribonacci-automatic sequences.

Abstract:Let $(F_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be the Fibonacci sequence given by $F_{n+2}=F_{n+1}+F_n$, for $n\geq 0$, where $F_0=0$ and $F_1=1$. There are several interesting identities involving this sequence such as $F_n^2+F_{n+1}^2=F_{2n+1}$, for all $n\geq 0$. Inspired by this naive identity, in 2012, Chaves, Marques and Togbé proved that if $(G_m)_m$ is a linear recurrence sequence (under weak assumptions) and $G_n^s+\cdots +G_{n+k}^s\in (G_m)_m$, for infinitely many positive integers $n$, then $s$ is bounded by an effectively computable constant depending only on $k$ and the parameters of $G_m$. In this paper, we generalize this result, proving, in particular, that if $(G_m)_m$ and $ (H_m)_m$ are linear recurrence sequences (also under weak assumptions), $R(z) \in \mathbb{C}[z]$, and $ \epsilon_0R(G_n)+\epsilon_1R(G_{n+1})+\cdots +\epsilon_{k-1}R(G_{n+k-1})+R(G_{n+k})$ belongs to $(H_m)_m$, for infinitely many positive integers $n$, then the degree of $R(z)$ is bounded by an effectively computable constant depending only on the upper and lower bounds of the $\epsilon_i$'s and the parameters of $G_m$ (but surprisingly not on $k$).
