We thus get, in this setting, an algorithm which given a f.g. regular ideal, build a regular element in this ideal.

Abstract:Denoting by V(n) the number of regular integers $(\text{mod}n)$, we study properties of the sequences $\displaystyle \biggl(\frac{V(n+1)}{V(n)}\biggr)_{n\geq1}$ and $\displaystyle (V(n+1)-V(n))_{n\geq1}$. We also prove that the sets $\displaystyle\biggl \lbrace\frac{\psi(n)}{V(n)} : n\geq1\biggr \rbrace$ and $\displaystyle\biggl \lbrace\frac{V(n)}{\phi(n)} : n\geq1\biggr \rbrace$ are everywhere dense in $(1,+\infty)$.

Abstract:Our result contains as special cases the Frobenius theorem (1895) on the~number of solutions to the equation $x^n=1$ in a finite group and the Solomon theorem (1969) on the number of solutions in a group to systems of equations with fewer equations than unknowns. Instead of systems of equations, we consider arbitrary first-order formulae in the group language with constants. Our result substantially generalizes the Klyachko--Mkrtchyan theorem (2014) on this topic.

Abstract:In this note we give a bijective proof for the explicit formula giving the total number of principal series of the direct product $\mathbb{Z}_{p^{\alpha_1}} \times \mathbb{Z}_{p^{\alpha_2}}$, where $p$ is a prime number. This new proof is easier to generalize to arbitrary finite abelian groups than the original direct calculation method.

Abstract:Green [Geometric and Functional Analysis 15 (2005), 340--376] established a version of the Szemerédi Regularity Lemma for abelian groups and derived the Removal Lemma for abelian groups as its corollary. We provide another proof of his Removal Lemma that allows us to extend its statement to all finite groups. We also discuss possible extensions of the Removal Lemma to systems of equations.

Abstract:We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.

We study the structure of rings which satisfy the von Neumann regularity of commutators, and call a ring [math] C-regular if [math] for all [math], [math] in [math]. For a C-regular ring [math], we prove [math], where [math], [math], [math], [math] are the Jacobson radical, upper nilradical, Wedderburn radical, and center of a given ring [math], respectively, and [math] denotes the polynomial ring with a set [math] of commuting indeterminates over [math]; we also prove that [math] is semiprime if and only if the right (left) singular ideal of [math] is zero. We provide methods to construct C-regular rings which are neither commutative nor von Neumann regular, from any given ring. Moreover, for a C-regular ring [math], the following are proved to be equivalent: (i) [math] is Abelian; (ii) every prime factor ring of [math] is a duo domain; (iii) [math] is quasi-duo; and (iv) [math] is reduced.

Abstract:Let $K[G]$ denote the edge ring of a finite connected simple graph $G$ on $[d]$ and $\mat(G)$ the matching number of $G$. It is shown that $\reg(K[G]) \leq \mat(G)$ if $G$ is non-bipartite and $K[G]$ is normal, and that $\reg(K[G]) \leq \mat(G) - 1$ if $G$ is bipartite.

Abstract:In this article, we studied the inverse Erdős-Heilbronn problem with the restricted sumset from two components $A$ and $B$ that are not necessarily the same. We give a completely elementary proof for the problem in $\mathbb{Z}$ and some partial results that contributes to the elementary proof of the problem in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, avoiding the usage of the powerful polynomial method and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.

Abstract: In this paper, we prove Dahmen and Beukers' conjecture that the number of integral Lam\'{e} equations with index $n$ modulo scalar equivalence with the monodromy group dihedral $D_{N}$ of order $2N$ is given by \[L_{n}(N)=\frac{1}{2}\left( \frac{n(n+1)\Psi(N)}{24}-\left( a_{n}% \phi(N)+b_{n}\phi(\tfrac{N}{2}) \right) \right) +\frac{2}% {3}\varepsilon_{n}(N).\] Our main tool is the new pre-modular form $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ of weight $n(n+1)/2$ introduced by Lin and Wang \cite{LW2} and the associated modular form $M_{n,N}(\tau):=\prod_{(r,s)}Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ of weight $\Psi(N)n(n+1)/{2}$, where the product runs over all $N$-torsion points $(r,s)$ of exact order $N$. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to the precise formula of the vanishing order of $M_{n,N}(\tau)$ at infinity: \[v_{\infty}(M_{n,N}(\tau))=a_{n}\phi(N)+b_{n}\phi( N/2).\] This formula is extremely hard to prove because the explicit expression of $Z_{r,s}^{(n)}(\tau)$ is not known for general $n$. Here we succeed to prove it by using certain Painlev\'{e} VI equations. Our result also indicates that this conjecture is intimately connected with the problem of counting pole numbers of algebraic solutions of certain Painlev\'{e} VI equations. The main results of this paper has been announced in \cite{Lin-CDM}.

Abstract:For a regular $2n$-gon there are $(2n-1)!!$ ways to match and glue the $2n$ sides. The Harer-Zagier bivariate generating function enumerates the gluings by $n$ and the genus $g$ of the attendant surface and leads to a recurrence equation for the counts of gluings with parameters $n$ and $g$. This formula was originally obtained by using the multidimensional Gaussian integrals. Soon after Jackson and later Zagier found alternative proofs that used the symmetric group characters. In this note we give a different, characters-based, proof. Its core is computing and marginally inverting Fourier transform of the underlying probability measure on $S_{2n}$. Aside from Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for one-hook diagrams, the counting techniques we use are of elementary, combinatorial nature.

Uniform exponent bounds on the number of primitive extensions of number fields

Abstract:A folklore conjecture asserts the existence of a constant $c_n > 0$ such that $\#\mathcal{F}_n(X) \sim c_n X$ as $X\to \infty$, where $\mathcal{F}_n(X)$ is the set of degree $n$ extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ with discriminant bounded by $X$. This conjecture is known if $n \leq 5$, but even the weaker conjecture that there exists an absolute constant $C\geq 1$ such that $\#\mathcal{F}_n(X) \ll_n X^C$ remains unknown and apparently out of reach. Here, we make progress on this weaker conjecture (which we term the "uniform exponent conjecture") in two ways. First, we reduce the general problem to that of studying relative extensions of number fields whose Galois group is an almost simple group in a natural primitive permutation representation. Second, for almost all such groups, we prove the strongest known upper bound on the number of such extensions. These bounds have the effect of resolving the uniform exponent conjecture for solvable groups, sporadic groups, exceptional groups, and classical groups of bounded rank.

Abstract:We define generalised equations of Z-Mahler type, based on the Zeckendorf numeration system. We show that if a sequence over a commutative ring is Z-regular, then it is the sequence of coefficients of a series which is a solution of a Z-Mahler equation. Conversely, if the Z-Mahler equation is isolating, then its solutions define Z-regular sequences. This is a generalisation of results of Becker and Dumas. We provide an example to show that there exist non-isolating Z-Mahler equations whose solutions do not define Z-regular sequences. Our proof yields a new construction of weighted automata that generate classical q-regular sequences.

Towards solid abelian groups: A formal proof of Nöbeling's theorem

Abstract:Condensed mathematics, developed by Clausen and Scholze over the last few years, is a new way of studying the interplay between algebra and geometry. It replaces the concept of a topological space by a more sophisticated but better-behaved idea, namely that of a condensed set. Central to the theory are solid abelian groups and liquid vector spaces, analogues of complete topological groups. Nöbeling's theorem, a surprising result from the 1960s about the structure of the abelian group of continuous maps from a profinite space to the integers, is a crucial ingredient in the theory of solid abelian groups; without it one cannot give any nonzero examples of solid abelian groups. We discuss a recently completed formalisation of this result in the Lean theorem prover, and give a more detailed proof than those previously available in the literature. The proof is somewhat unusual in that it requires induction over ordinals -- a technique which has not previously been used to a great extent in formalised mathematics.

On the regularity number of a finite group and other base-related invariants

Abstract:A $k$-tuple $(H_1, \ldots, H_k)$ of core-free subgroups of a finite group $G$ is said to be regular if $G$ has a regular orbit on the Cartesian product $G/H_1 \times \cdots \times G/H_k$. The regularity number of $G$, denoted $R(G)$, is the smallest positive integer $k$ with the property that every such $k$-tuple is regular. In this paper, we develop some general methods for studying the regularity of subgroup tuples in arbitrary finite groups, and we determine the precise regularity number of all almost simple groups with an alternating or sporadic socle. For example, we prove that $R(S_n) = n-1$ and $R(A_n) = n-2$. We also formulate and investigate natural generalisations of several well-studied problems on base sizes for finite permutation groups, including conjectures due to Cameron, Pyber and Vdovin. For instance, we extend earlier work of Burness, O'Brien and Wilson by proving that $R(G) \leqslant 7$ for every almost simple sporadic group, with equality if and only if $G$ is the Mathieu group ${\rm M}_{24}$. We also show that every triple of soluble subgroups in an almost simple sporadic group is regular, which generalises recent work of Burness on base sizes for transitive actions of sporadic groups with soluble point stabilisers.

Abstract:In 2014, as part of a larger study of overpartitions with restrictions of the overlined parts based on residue classes, Munagi and Sellers defined $d_2(n)$ as the number of overpartitions of weight $n$ wherein only even parts can be overlined. As part of that work, they used a generating function approach to prove a parity characterization for $d_2(n)$. In this note, we give a combinatorial proof of their result and extend it to a modulus 4 characterization; we provide both generating function and combinatorial proofs of this stronger result. The combinatorial arguments incorporate classical involutions of Franklin, Glaisher, and Sylvester, along with a recent involution of van Leeuwen and methods new with this work.
