Abstract:Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be torsion groups. We prove that the monoids of product-one sequences over $G_1$ and over $G_2$ are isomorphic if and only if the groups $G_1$ and $G_2$ are isomorphic. This was known before for abelian groups.

Abstract:It is shown that if $\{H_n\}_{n \in \omega}$ is a sequence of groups without involutions, with $1 < |H_n| \leq 2^{\aleph_0}$, then the topologist's product modulo the finite words is (up to isomorphism) independent of the choice of sequence. This contrasts with the abelian setting: if $\{A_n\}_{n \in \omega}$ is a sequence of countably infinite torsion-free abelian groups, then the isomorphism class of the product modulo sum $\prod_{n \in \omega} A_n/\bigoplus_{n \in \omega} A_n$ is dependent on the sequence.

Abstract:Let $G_{2}$ be a group which acts trivially on an abelian group $G_{1}$. As is well known, each perturbed direct product of $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ under a 2-cocycle $\varepsilon\in Z^{2}(G_{2},G_{1})$ determines a central extension of $G_{1}$ by $G_{2}$. The purpose of this paper is to study perturbed direct products of groups and to decide in some cases how the isomorphism of these groups can be decided. Furthermore, we show that the study of the isomorphism of perturbed direct products of an abelian torsion group and a finite group is reduced to the study of the isomorphism of $p$-subgroups. We characterize such isomorphisms in various situations with some assumptions on the quotient group.

Harmonious sequences in groups with a unique involution

Abstract:We study several combinatorial properties of finite groups that are related to the notions of sequenceability, R-sequenceability, and harmonious sequences. In particular, we show that in every abelian group $G$ with a unique involution $\imath_G$ there exists a permutation $g_0,\ldots, g_{m}$ of elements of $G \backslash \{\imath_G\}$ such that the consecutive sums $g_0+g_1, g_1+g_2,\ldots, g_{m}+g_0$ also form a permutation of elements of $G\backslash \{\imath_G\}$. We also show that in every abelian group of order at least 4 there exists a sequence containing each non-identity element of $G$ exactly twice such that the consecutive sums also contain each non-identity element of $G$ twice. We apply several results to the existence of transversals in Latin squares.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a monoid (written multiplicatively). We call $H$ Archimedean if, for all $a, b \in H$ such that $b$ is a non-unit, there is an integer $k \ge 1$ with $b^k \in HaH$; strongly Archimedean if, for each $a \in H$, there is an integer $k \ge 1$ such that $HaH$ contains any product of any $k$ non-units of $H$; and duo if $aH = Ha$ for all $a \in H$. We prove that the ideals of two strongly Archimedean, cancellative, duo monoids make up isomorphic semigroups under the induced operation of setwise multiplication if and only if the monoids themselves are isomorphic up to units; and the same holds upon restriction to finitely generated ideals in Archimedean, cancellative, duo monoids. Then we use the previous results to tackle a new case of a problem of Tamura and Shafer from the late 1960s.

Matchings in matroids over abelian groups

Abstract:We formulate and prove matroid analogues of results concerning matchings in groups. A matching in an abelian group $(G,+)$ is a bijection $f:A\to B$ between two finite subsets $A,B$ of $G$ satisfying $a+f(a)\notin A$ for all $a\in A$. A group $G$ has the matching property if for every two finite subsets $A,B \subset G$ of the same size with $0 \notin B$, there exists a matching from $A$ to $B$. In [19] it was proved that an abelian group has the matching property if and only if it is torsion-free or cyclic of prime order. Here we consider a similar question in a matroid setting. We introduce an analogous notion of matching between matroids whose ground sets are subsets of an abelian group $G$, and we obtain criteria for the existence of such matchings. Our tools are classical theorems in matroid theory, group theory and additive number theory.

On the isomorphism problem for power semigroups

Abstract:Let $\mathcal P(S)$ be the semigroup obtained by equipping the family of all non-empty subsets of a (multiplicatively written) semigroup $S$ with the operation of setwise multiplication induced by $S$ itself. We call a subsemigroup $P$ of $\mathcal P(S)$ downward complete if any element of $S$ lies in at least one set $X \in P$ and any non-empty subset of a set in $P$ is still in $P$. We obtain, for a commutative semigroup $S$, a characterization of the cancellative elements of a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(S)$ in terms of the cancellative elements of $S$. Consequently, we show that, if $H$ and $K$ are cancellative semigroups and either of them is commutative, then every isomorphism from a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(H)$ to a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(K)$ restricts to an isomorphism from $H$ to $K$. This solves a special case of a problem of Tamura and Shafer from the late 1960s and generalizes a recent result by Bienvenu and Geroldinger, where it is assumed, among other conditions, that $H$ and $K$ are numerical monoids.

Abstract:We investigate ternary products of groupoids and prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the collection of right modular groupoids with a left identity element l and laterally commutative, l-bi-unital semiheaps. This result is applied to prove that the natural ternary product induced by a right modular groupoid S with left identity is isomorphic to the natural ternary product of a groupoid T if and only if S and T are isomorphic groupoids. Ternary products of other classes of groupoids are also characterised, including the natural and standard ternary products of inverse semigroups. These two classes of ternary products are proved to be varieties of type (3,1,1).

Abstract:For a group $ G $ we consider its tensor square $G \otimes G$ and exterior square $G \wedge G$. We prove that for a circularly orderable group $G$, under some assumptions on $H_1(G)$ and $H_2(G)$, its exterior square and tensor square are left-orderable. This yields an obstruction for a circularly orderable group $G$ to have torsion. We apply these results to study circular orderability of tabulated virtual knot groups.

On the growth of torsion in the cohomology of some arithmetic groups of $\mathbb{Q}$-rank one

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.

Abstract:Let $S,T$ be two numerical semigroups. We study when $S$ is one half of $T$, with $T$ almost symmetric. If we assume that the type of $T$, $t(T)$, is odd, then for any $S$ there exist infinitely many such $T$ and we prove that $1 \leq t(T) \leq 2t(S)+1$. On the other hand, if $t(T)$ is even, there exists such $T$ if and only if $S$ is almost symmetric and different from $\mathbb{N}$; in this case the type of $S$ is the number of even pseudo-Frobenius numbers of $T$. Moreover, we construct these families of semigroups using the numerical duplication with respect to a relative ideal.

On the order sequence of a group

Abstract:This paper provides a bridge between two active areas of research, the spectrum (set of element orders) and the power graph of a finite group. The order sequence of a finite group $G$ is the list of orders of elements of the group, arranged in non-decreasing order. Order sequences of groups of order $n$ are ordered by elementwise domination, forming a partially ordered set. We prove a number of results about this poset, among them the following. M.~Amiri recently proved that the poset has a unique maximal element, corresponding to the cyclic group. We show that the product of orders in a cyclic group of order $n$ is at least $q^{\phi(n)}$ times as large as the product in any non-cyclic group,where $q$ is the smallest prime divisor of $n$ and $\phi$ is Euler's function, with a similar result for the sum. The poset of order sequences of abelian groups of order $p^n$ is naturally isomorphic to the (well-studied) poset of partitions of $n$ with its natural partial order. If there exists a non-nilpotent group of order $n$, then there exists such a group whose order sequence is dominated by the order sequence of any nilpotent group of order $n$. There is a product operation on finite ordered sequences, defined by forming all products and sorting them into non-decreasing order. The product of order sequences of groups $G$ and $H$ is the order sequence of a group if and only if $|G|$ and $|H|$ are coprime. The paper concludes with a number of open problems.

Abstract:Using an algebraic point of view we present an introduction to the groupoid theory, that is, we give fundamental properties of groupoids as, uniqueness of inverses and properties of the identities, and study subgroupoids, wide subgroupoids and normal subgroupoids. We also present the isomorphism theorems for groupoids and as an applications we obtain the corresponding version of Zassenhaus Lemma and Jordan-Hölder Theorem for groupoids. Finally inspired by the Ehresmann-Schein-Nambooripad Theorem we improve a result of R. Exel concerning a one to one correspondence between partial actions of groups and actions of inverse semigroups.

Abstract:Given a finitely generated discrete group {\Gamma}, we construct for any admissible crossed product completion and for any metrizable finite dimensional compact {\Gamma}-space X, a universal Higson-Roe six-term exact sequence for the transformation groupoid X\rtimes {\Gamma}. In particular, we generalize the maximal Higson- Roe sequence to such groupoids. In the case where the groupoid X\rtimes {\Gamma} satisfies the rectified Baum-Connes conjecture, this yields some rigidity consequences.

Abstract:An old problem in group theory is that of describing how the order of an element behaves under multiplication. To generalize some classical bounds concerning the order $\mathrm o(ab)$ of two elements $a, b$ in a finite abelian group to the non-commutative case, we replace $\mathrm o(ab)$ with a notion of mutual order $\mathrm o(a, b)$, defined as the least positive integer $n$ such that $a^nb^n = 1$. Motivated by this, we then compare $\mathrm o(ab)$ and $\mathrm o(a, b)$ in finite nilpotent groups, and show that in a group of class $\gamma$, the ratio $\mathrm o(ab)/\mathrm o(a, b)$ lies in some fixed finite set $S(\gamma) \subset \mathbb Q$, whose elements do not involve prime factors exceeding $\gamma$. In particular, we generalize a result of P. Hall, which asserts that $\mathrm o(ab) = \mathrm o(a, b)$ in $p$-groups with $p > \gamma$. We end with a more detailed analysis for groups of class 2, which allows one to give a more explicit description of $\mathrm o(ab)/\mathrm o(a, b)$.

Abstract:In this paper we study C⁎-algebra version of Sarnak Conjecture for noncommutative toral automorphisms. Let AΘ be a noncommutative torus and αΘ be the noncommutative toral automorphism arising from a matrix S∈GL(d,Z). We show that if the Voiculescu–Brown entropy of αΘ is zero, then the sequence {ρ(αΘnu)}n∈Z is a sum of a nilsequence and a zero-density-sequence, where u∈AΘ and ρ is any state on AΘ. Then by a result of Green and Tao [9], this sequence is linearly disjoint from the Möbius function.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite semigroup, and let $E(\mathcal{S})$ be the set of all idempotents of $\mathcal{S}$. Gillam, Hall and Williams proved in 1972 that every $\mathcal{S}$-valued sequence $T$ of length at least $|\mathcal{S}|-|E(\mathcal{S})|+1$ is not (strongly) idempotent-product free, in the sense that it contains a nonempty subsequence the product of whose terms, in their natural order in $T$, is an idempotent, which affirmed a question of Erdős. They also showed that the value $|\mathcal{S}|-|E(\mathcal{S})|+1$ is best possible. Here, motivated by Gillam, Hall and Williams' work, we determine the structure of the idempotent-product free sequences of length $|\mathcal{S}\setminus E(\mathcal{S})|$ when the semigroup $\mathcal{S}$ (not necessarily finite) satisfies $|\mathcal{S}\setminus E(\mathcal{S})|$ is finite, and we introduce a couple of structural constants for semigroups that reduce to the classical Davenport constant in the case of finite abelian groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abeilian group. A sequence $S$ with terms from $G$ is zero-sum if the sum of terms in $S$ equals zero. It is a minimal zero-sum sequence if no proper, nontrivial subsequence is zero-sum. The maximal length of a minimal zero-sum subsequence in $G$ is the Davenport constant, denoted $D(G)$. For a rank 2 group $G=C_n \oplus C_n$, it is known that $D(G)=2n-1$. However, the structure of all maximal length minimal zero-sum sequences remains open. If every such sequence contains a term with multiplicity $n-1$, then $C_n \oplus C_n$ is said to have Property B, and it is conjectured that this is true for all rank 2 groups $C_n \oplus C_n$. In this paper, we show that Property B is multiplicative, namely, if $G=C_n \oplus C_n$ and $G=C_m \oplus C_m$ both satisfy Property B, with $m, n\geq 3$ odd and $mn>9$, then $C_{mn}\oplus C_{mn}$ satisfies Property B also. Combined with previous work in the literature, this reduces the question of establishing Property B to the prime cases, and in such case the complete structural description of the sequence follows.

Abstract:Abstract We study two classes of torsion classes that generalize functorially finite torsion classes, that is, semistable torsion classes and morphism torsion classes. Semistable torsion classes are parametrized by the elements in the real Grothendieck group up to TF equivalence. We give a close connection between TF equivalence classes and the cones given by canonical decompositions of the spaces of projective presentations due to Derksen–Fei. More strongly, for ‐tame algebras and hereditary algebras, we prove that TF equivalence classes containing lattice points are exactly the cones given by canonical decompositions. One of the key steps in our proof is a general description of semistable torsion classes in terms of morphism torsion classes. We also answer a question by Derksen–Fei negatively by giving examples of algebras that do not satisfy the ray condition. As an application of our results, we give an explicit description of TF equivalence classes of preprojective algebras of type .

Abstract:We prove a rigidity theorem for morphisms from products of open subschemes of the projective line into solvable groups not containing a copy of $\Ga$ (for example, wound unipotent groups). As a consequence, we deduce several structural results about unirational group schemes, including that unirationality for group schemes descends through separable extensions. We also apply the main result to prove that permawound unipotent groups are unirational and -- when wound -- commutative.
