Abstract:<p>We prove that a real-valued function (that is not assumed to be continuous) on a real analytic manifold is analytic whenever all its restrictions to analytic submanifolds homeomorphic to <span><math>S2</math></span> are analytic. This is a real analog for the classical theorem of Hartogs that a function on a complex manifold is complex analytic iff it is complex analytic when restricted to any complex curve.</p><h2>Résumé</h2><p>Nous montrons qu'une fonction à valeurs réelles (qui n'est pas assumée être continue), définie sur une variété analytique réelle est analytique si et seulement si toutes ses restrictions aux surfaces analytiques homeomorphe à la 2-sphère sont analytiques. On real analytic functions on closed subanalytic domains

Abstract:We show that a function $f : X \to \mathbb R$ defined on a closed uniformly polynomially cuspidal set $X$ in $\mathbb R^n$ is real analytic if and only if $f$ is smooth and all its composites with germs of polynomial curves in $X$ are real analytic. The degree of the polynomial curves needed for this is effectively related to the regularity of the boundary of $X$. For instance, if the boundary of $X$ is locally Lipschitz, then polynomial curves of degree $2$ suffice. In this Lipschitz case, we also prove that a function $f : X \to \mathbb R$ is real analytic if and only if all its composites with germs of quadratic polynomial maps in two variables with images in $X$ are real analytic; here it is not necessary to assume that $f$ is smooth.

Abstract:Let X X be a real analytic manifold. A function f : X → R f:X\to \mathbb {R} is called arc-analytic if it is real analytic on each real analytic arc. In real analytic geometry there are many examples of arc-analytic functions that are not real analytic. They appear while studying the arc-symmetric sets and the blow-analytic equivalence. In this paper we show that the non-analyticity locus of an arc-analytic function is arc-symmetric. We also discuss the behavior of the non-analyticity locus under blowings-up. By a result of Bierstone and Milman, an arc-analytic function f : X → R f:X\to \mathbb {R} that satisfies a polynomial equation with real analytic coefficients, can be made analytic, over any relatively compact subset of X X , by a sequence of blowings-up with smooth centers. We show that these centers can be chosen, at each stage of the resolution, inside the non-analyticity loci.

Abstract:We investigate the oscillatory properties of the quiet solar chromosphere in relation to the underlying photosphere, with particular regard to the effects of the magnetic topology. We perform a Fourier analysis on a sequence of line-of-sight velocities measured simultaneously in a photospheric (Fe I 709.0 nm) and a chromospheric line (Ca II 854.2 nm). The velocities were obtained from full spectroscopic data acquired at high spatial resolution with the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS). The field of view encompasses a full supergranular cell, allowing us to discriminate between areas with different magnetic characteristics. We show that waves with frequencies above the acoustic cut-off propagate from the photosphere to upper layers only in restricted areas of the quiet Sun. A large fraction of the quiet chromosphere is in fact occupied by ``magnetic shadows'', surrounding network regions, that we identify as originating from fibril-like structures observed in the core intensity of the Ca II line. We show that a large fraction of the chromospheric acoustic power at frequencies below the acoustic cut-off, residing in the proximity of the magnetic network elements, directly propagates from the underlying photosphere. This supports recent results arguing that network magnetic elements can channel low-frequency photospheric oscillations into the chromosphere, thus providing a way to input mechanical energy in the upper layers.

On real algebraic maps whose images are domains surrounded by the products of hyperbolas and real affine spaces

Abstract:Previously, we have systematically constructed explicit real algebraic functions which are represented as the compositions of smooth real algebraic maps whose images are domains surrounded by hypersurfaces of degree 1 or 2 with canonical projections. Here we give new examples with the hypersurfaces each of which is the product of a connected component of a hyperbola and a copy of the $1$-dimensional affine space explicitly. As a related future work we also discuss problems to obtain the zero sets of some real polynomials explicitly from increasing sequences of real numbers. This is motivated by a problem in theory of smooth functions proposed first by Sharko: can we construct nice smooth functions whose Reeb graphs are as prescribed? The Reeb space of a smooth function is the naturally obtained graph whose underlying space is the quotient space of the manifold consisting of connected components of preimages. The author first considered variants respecting the topologies of the preimages and obtained several results before. Our work is also motivated by real algebraic geometry, pioneered by Nash. We can know existence of real algebraic structures of smooth manifolds and some general sets and we already know several approximations of smooth maps by real algebraic maps. Our interest lies in explicit construction, which is difficult.

Analogues of hyperlogarithm functions on affine complex curves

Abstract:For $C$ a smooth affine complex curve, there is a unique minimal subalgebra $A_C$ of the algebra $\mathcal O_{hol}(\tilde C)$ of holomorphic functions on its universal cover $\tilde C$, which is stable under all the operations $f\mapsto \int f\omega$, for $\omega$ in the space $\Omega(C)$ of regular differentials on $C$. We identify $A_C$ with the image of the iterated integration map $I_{x_0} : \mathrm{Sh}(\Omega(C))\to\mathcal O_{hol}(\tilde C)$ based at any point $x_0$ of $\tilde C$ (here $\mathrm{Sh}(-)$ denotes the shuffle algebra of a vector space), as well as with the unipotent part, with respect to the action of $\mathrm{Aut}(\tilde C/C)$, of a subalgebra of $\mathcal O_{hol}(\tilde C)$ of moderate growth functions. We show that any regular Maurer-Cartan (MC) element $J$ on $C$ with values in the topologically free Lie algebra over $\mathrm H^1_{\mathrm{dR}}(C)^*$ gives rise to an isomorphism of $A_C$ with $\mathcal O(C) \otimes\mathrm{Sh}(\mathrm H^1_{\mathrm{dR}}(C))$, where $\mathcal O(C)$ is the algebra of regular functions on $C$, leading to the assignment of a subalgebra $\mathcal H_C(J)$ of $A_C$ (isomorphic to $\mathrm{Sh}(\mathrm H^1_{\mathrm{dR}}(C))$) to any MC element. We also associate a MC element $J_\sigma$ to each section $\sigma$ of the projection $\Omega(C)\to \mathrm H^1_{\mathrm{dR}}(C)$; when $C$ has genus $0$, we exhibit a particular section $\sigma_0$ for which $\mathcal H_C(J_{\sigma_0})$ is the algebra of hyperlogarithm functions (Poincaré, Lappo-Danilevsky).

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension at least 3. Given a compact codimension 2 real analytic submanifold $M$ of $X$, that is the boundary of a compact Levi-flat hypersurface $H$, we study the regularity of $H$. Suppose that the CR singularities of $M$ are an $\mathcal{O}(X)$-convex set. For example, suppose $M$ has only finitely many CR singularities, which is a generic condition. Then $H$ must in fact be a real analytic submanifold. If $M$ is real algebraic, it follows that $H$ is real algebraic and in fact extends past $M$, even near CR singularities. To prove these results we provide two variations on a theorem of Malgrange, that a smooth submanifold contained in a real analytic subvariety of the same dimension is itself real analytic. We prove a similar theorem for submanifolds with boundary, and another one for subanalytic sets.

Abstract:We consider the range of random analytic functions with finite radius of convergence. We show that any unbounded random Taylor series with rotationally invariant coefficients has dense image in the plane. We moreover show that if in addition the coefficients are complex Gaussian with sufficiently regular variances, then the image is the whole complex plane. We do this by exploiting an approximate connection between the coverage problem and spatial branching processes. This answers a long-standing open question of J.-P. Kahane, with sufficient regularity.

Abstract:A realization is a triple, $(A,b,c)$, consisting of a $d-$tuple, $A= (A =_1, \cdots, A_d )$, $d\in \mathbb{N}$, of bounded linear operators on a separable, complex Hilbert space, $\mathcal{H}$, and vectors $b,c \in \mathcal{H}$. Any such realization defines a (uniformly) analytic non-commutative (NC) function in an open neighbourhood of the origin, $0:= (0, \cdots , 0)$, of the NC universe of $d-$tuples of square matrices of any fixed size via the formula $h(X) = I \otimes b^* ( I \otimes I =_{\mathcal{H}} - \sum X_j \otimes A_j ) ^{-1} I \otimes c$. It is well-known that an NC function has a finite-dimensional realization if and only if it is a non-commutative rational function that is defined at $0$. Such finite realizations contain valuable information about the NC rational functions they generate. By considering more general, infinite-dimensional realizations we study, construct and characterize more general classes of uniformly analytic NC functions. In particular, we show that an NC function is (uniformly) entire, if and only if it has a jointly compact and quasinilpotent realization. Restricting our results to one variable shows that an analytic Taylor-MacLaurin series extends globally to an entire or meromorphic function if and only if it has a realization whose component operator is compact and quasinilpotent, or compact, respectively. This then motivates our definition of the set of global uniformly meromorphic NC functions as the (universal) skew field (of fractions) generated by NC rational expressions in the (semi-free ideal) ring of NC functions with jointly compact realizations.

Abstract:In the first half of twentieth century the theory of complex analytic functions and of their zerosets was fully developed. The definition of holomorphic function has a local nature. Germs of holomorphic functions form a distinguished subring of the ring of germs of continuous functions. This way came out the notion of analytic space. The definition of a complex analytic set is by local models as in the case of complex manifolds. But while local models for manifolds are open sets of ${\mathbb C}^n$, a local model of an analytic space is the zeroset of finitely many analytic functions on an open set of ${\mathbb C}^n$ together with a sheaf of continuous function to be called holomorphic. Towards the years $50$ of the last century, Cartan, Whitney, Bruhat and others tried to formulate the notion of analytic space over ${\mathbb R}$. Immediately they realize that the real sets verifying a definition similar to the complex one form a cathegory whose elements can get unpleasant behaviour. In particular this cathegory does not get the good properties of complex analytic spaces, as for instance coherence of their structural sheaves and Theorems A and B do not hold in general.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a discretely valued non-Archimedean field. We give an explicit description of analytic functions whose norm is bounded by a given real number $r$ on tubes of reduced $k$-analytic spaces associated to special formal schemes (those include $k$-affinoid spaces as well as open polydiscs). As an application we study the connectedness of these tubes. This generalizes (in the discretely valued case) a result of Siegfried Bosch. We use as a main tool a result of A.J. de Jong relating formal and analytic functions on special formal schemes and a generalization of de Jong's result which is proved in the joint appendix with Christian Kappen.

Abstract:We define and study real analytic calculus for several variables in hermitian Banach algebras. We also introduce weighted algebras analogues of the classical theorems of N. Wiener and P. Lévy on absolutely convergent Fourier series. As applications, we obtain two generalizations of N. Wiener and P. Lévy theorems. The first one for several functions of a single variable. Abstract:Let $K$ be a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero with valuation ring $R$, for instance, $K=\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $R=\mathbb{Z}_p$. We prove a general integral geometric formula for $K$-analytic groups and homogeneous $K$-analytic spaces, analogous to the corresponding result over the reals. This generalizes the $p$-adic integral geometric formula for projective spaces recently discovered by Kulkarni and Lerario, e.g., to the setting of Grassmannians. Based on this, we outline the construction of a nonarchimedean probabilistic Schubert Calculus. For this purpose, we characterize the relative position of two subspaces of $K^n$ by a position vector, a nonarchimedean analogue of the notion of principal angles, and we study the probability distribution of the position vector for random uniform subspaces. We then use this to compute the volume of special Schubert varieties over $K$. As a second application of the general integral geometry formula, we initiate the study of random fewnomial systems over nonarchimedean fields, bounding, and in some cases exactly determining, the expected number of zeros of such random systems.

Almost real closed fields with real analytic structure

Abstract:Cluckers and Lipshitz have shown that real closed fields equipped with real analytic structure are o-minimal. This generalizes the well-known subanalytic structure $\mathbb{R}_{\mathrm{an}}$ on the real numbers. We extend this line of research by investigating ordered fields with real analytic structure that are not necessarily real closed. When considered in a language with a symbol for a convex valuation ring, these structures turn out to be tame as valued fields: we prove that they are $\omega$-h-minimal. Additionally, our approach gives a precise description of the induced structure on the residue field and the value group, and naturally leads to an Ax--Kochen--Ersov-theorem for fields with real analytic structure.

Abstract:This is a short report on our new vanishing theorems for projective morphisms between complex analytic spaces. We established a complex analytic generalization of Kollár's torsion-freeness and vanishing theorem for analytic simple normal crossing pairs. Although our results may look artificial, they have already played a crucial role for the study of minimal models in the complex analytic setting.

Abstract:An important question is to describe topological conjugacy classes of dynamical systems. Here we show that within the space of real analytic one-dimensional maps with critical points of prescribed order, the conjugacy class of a map is a real analytic manifold. This extends results of Avila-Lyubich-de Melo \cite{ALM} for the quasi-quadratic unimodal case and of Clark \cite{C} for the more general unimodal case. Their methods fail in the case where there are several critical points, and for this reason we introduce the new notions of {\em pruned Julia set} of a real analytic map, and associate to a real analytic map an {\em external map} of the circle {\em with discontinuities} and {\em a pruned polynomial-like} complex extension of the real analytic map. Using this we are also able to show that topological conjugacy classes are connected (something which was not even known in the general unimodal setting). Even more, this space is contractible. In a companion paper, further applications of this paper will be given. It will be shown that within any real analytic family of real analytic one-dimensional maps, hyperbolic parameters form an open and dense subset.
