Abstract:In 2013, Pak and Panova proved the strict unimodality property of $q$-binomial coefficients $\binom{\ell+m}{m}_q$ (as polynomials in $q$) based on the combinatorics of Young tableaux and the semigroup property of Kronecker coefficients. They showed it to be true for all $\ell,m\geq 8$ and a few other cases. We propose a different approach to this problem based on computer algebra, where we establish a closed form for the coefficients of these polynomials and then use cylindrical algebraic decomposition to identify exactly the range of coefficients where strict unimodality holds. This strategy allows us to tackle generalizations of the problem, e.g., to show unimodality with larger gaps or unimodality of related sequences. In particular, we present proofs of two additional cases of a conjecture by Stanley and Zanello.

Abstract:Abstract In 1987, Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdős conjectured that the independence polynomial of any tree is unimodal. Although it attracts many researchers' attention, it is still open. Motivated by this conjecture, in this paper, we prove that rooted products of some graphs preserve real rootedness of independence polynomials. As application, we not only give a unified proof for some known results, but also we can apply them to generate infinite kinds of trees whose independence polynomials have only real zeros. Thus their independence polynomials are unimodal.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a conjecture, which generalises Euler's partition theorem involving odd parts and different parts for all moduli. We prove this conjecture for two family partitions. We give $q$-difference equations for the related generating function if the moduli is three. We provide new companions to Rogers-Ramanujan-Andrews-Gordon identities under this conjecture.

Unimodality and certain bivariate formal Laurent series

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the unimodality and strict unimodality of certain formal bivariate Laurent series with non-negative coefficients. We show that the sets of these formal bivariate Laurent series form commutative semirings under the operations of addition and multiplication of formal Laurent series. This result is used to establish the unimodality of sequences involving Gauss polynomials and certain refined color partitions. In particular, we solve an open problem posed by Andrews on the unimodality of generalized Gauss polynomials and establish an unimodal result for a statistic of plane partitions. We also establish many unimodal results for rank statistics in partition theory, including the rank statistics of concave and convex compositions studied by Andrews, as well as certain unimodal sequences studied by Kim-Lim-Lovejoy. Additionally, we establish the unimodality of the Betti numbers and Gromov-Witten invariants of certain Hilbert schemes of points.

Abstract:The equidistribution of roots of quadratic congruences with prime moduli depends crucially upon effective bounds for special Weyl linear forms. Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec discovered strong estimates for these Weyl linear forms when the quadratic polynomial has negative discriminant. Tóth proved analogous but weaker bounds when the quadratic polynomial has positive discriminant. We establish strong estimates for these Weyl linear forms for quadratics of positive discriminants. As an application of our bounds, we derive a quantitative uniform distribution of modular square roots with integer moduli in an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:The primary focus of this paper is overpartitions, a type of partition that plays a significant role in $q$-series theory. In 2006, Treneer discovered an explicit infinite family of congruences of overpartitions modulo $5$. In our research, we have identified explicit infinite families of congruences of overpartitions modulo $3,7,11$. This work reveals the connection between overpartitions and half-integral modular forms.

Abstract: The Borwein conjecture asserts that for any positive integer $n$ and $k$, the coefficient $a_{3k}$ of $q^{3k}$ in the expansion of $\prod_{j=0}^n (1-q^{3j+1})(1-q^{3j+2})$ is nonnegative. In this note we prove that for any $k\leq n$, $$a_{3k}+a_{3(n+1)+3k}+\cdots+a_{3n(n+1)+3k}>0.$$

Abstract:We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions. For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.

Abstract:We obtain asymptotic formulas for sums of coefficients over arithmetic progressions of polynomials related to the Borwein conjectures. Let $a_i$ denote the coefficient of $q^i$ in the polynomial $\prod_{j=1}^n\prod_{k=1}^{p-1}(1-q^{pj-k})^s$, where $p$ is an odd prime, and $n, s$ are positive integers. In this note, we prove that $$\Big|\sum_{i=b \text{mod} 2pn}a_i-\frac{(p-1)p^{sn-1}}{2n}\Big|\leq p^{sn/2},$$ if $b$ is divisible by $p$, and $$\Big|\sum_{i=b \text{mod} 2pn}a_i+\frac{p^{sn-1}}{2n}\Big|\leq p^{sn/2},$$ if $b$ is not divisible by $p$. This improves a recent result of Goswami and Pantangi.

Abstract:We begin by considering a sequence of polynomials in three variables whose coefficients count restricted binary overpartitions with certain properties. We then concentrate on two specific subsequences that are closely related to the Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, deriving combinatorial and algebraic properties of some special cases. We show that the zeros of these polynomial sequences lie on certain algebraic curves, some of which we study in greater detail. Finally, we extend part of this work to restricted $b$-ary overpartitions for arbitrary integers $b\geq 2$.

Abstract:In 1933, Borsuk proposed the following problem: Can every bounded set in $${{\mathbb{E}}^n}$$ be divided into n + 1 subsets of smaller diameter? This problem has been studied by many authors, and a lot of partial results have been discovered. In particular, Kahn and Kalai’s counterexamples surprised the mathematical community in 1993. Nevertheless, the problem is still far away from being completely resolved. This paper presents a broad review on related subjects and, based on a novel reformulation, introduces a computer proof program to deal with this challenging problem.

Abstract:Motivated by recent works on the butterfly structure, particularly by its generalization introduced by Canteaut et al. (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 63(11):7575–7591, 2017), we first push further the study of permutation polynomials over binary finite fields by completely characterizing those permutations defined over the finite field (of order ) having the following shape: where , , m is odd, , and . We shall provide an approach to handle the bijectivity of for any . Notably, we show that the problem of finding conditions for bijectivity of the quadrinomial is closely related to the study of the famous equation (*). We then reduce the initial problem into the problem of finding conditions for which an equation of the form (*) has a unique solution in for every . In addition, as a crucial direct consequence our result, we prove the validity of the conjecture (Conjecture 19) proposed by Li et al. (Des Codes Cryptogr 89:737–761, 2021). We emphasize that our positive answer completely characterizes permutations with boomerang uniformity 4 from the butterfly structure, which leads to the view of the quadrinomial as excellent candidates to design block ciphers in symmetric cryptography. Despite a lot of attention regarding the considered conjecture, it remains unsolved on its whole when the coefficients lie in . However, this article is the first which propose an approach that solves the enter conjecture by handling both sides of it involving equivalence simultaneously. We believe that our novel approach and its strength could benefit from proving the bijectivity of other families of polynomials over finite fields.

Abstract:Borwein and Choi conjectured that a polynomial $P(x)$ with coefficients $\pm1$ of degree $N-1$ is cyclotomic iff $$P(x)=\pm \Phi_{p_1}(\pm x)\Phi_{p_2}(\pm x^{p_1})\cdots \Phi_{p_r}(\pm x^{p_1p_2\cdots p_{r-1}})$$ where $N=p_1p_2\cdots p_{r}$ and the $p_i$ are primes, not necessarily distinct. Here $\Phi_p(x):=(x^p-1)/(x-1)$ is the $p-$th cyclotomic polynomial. In \cite{1}, they also proved the conjecture for $N$ odd or a power of 2. In this paper we introduce a so-called $E-$transformation, by which we prove the conjecture for a wider variety of cases and present the key as well as a new approach to investigate the conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that the number $q(n)$ of partitions into distinct parts is log-concave for $n \geq 33$ and satisfies the higher order Turán inequalities for $n\geq 121$ conjectured by Craig and Pun. In doing so, we establish explicit error terms for $q(n)$ and for $q(n-1)q(n+1)/q(n)^2$ based on Chern's asymptotic formulas for $\eta$-quotients.

Abstract:Let $P(x)\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a polynomial with at least two distinct complex roots. We prove that the number of solutions $(x_1, \dots, x_k, y_1, \dots, y_k)\in [N]^{2k}$ to the equation \[ \prod_{1\le i \le k} P(x_i) = \prod_{1\le j \le k} P(y_j)\neq 0 \] (for any $k\ge 1$) is asymptotically $k!N^{k}$ as $N\to +\infty$. This solves a question first proposed and studied by Najnudel. The result can also be interpreted as saying that all even moments of random partial sums $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}\sum_{n\le N}f(P(n))$ match standard complex Gaussian moments as $N\to +\infty$, where $f$ is the Steinhaus random multiplicative function.

The Differential and Boomerang Properties of a Class of Binomials

Abstract:Let $q$ be an odd prime power with $q\equiv 3\ ({\rm{mod}}\ 4)$. In this paper, we study the differential and boomerang properties of the function $F_{2,u}(x)=x^2\big(1+u\eta(x)\big)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, where $u\in\mathbb{F}_{q}^*$ and $\eta$ is the quadratic character of $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We determine the differential uniformity of $F_{2,u}$ for any $u\in\mathbb{F}_{q}^*$ and determine the differential spectra and boomerang uniformity of the locally-APN functions $F_{2,\pm 1}$, thereby disproving a conjecture proposed in \cite{budaghyan2024arithmetization} which states that there exist infinitely many $q$ and $u$ such that $F_{2,u}$ is an APN function.

Abstract:The isomorphism of polynomials (IP), one of the hard problems in multivariate public key cryptography induces an equivalence relation on a set of systems of polynomials. Then the enumeration problem of IP consists of counting the numbers of different classes and counting the cardinality of each class that is highly related to the scale of key space for a multivariate public key cryptosystem. In this paper we show the enumeration of the equivalence classes containing $\sum\nolimits_{i = 0}^{n - 1} {a_i X^{2q^i } } $ when char$(\mathbb{F}_q )$ = 2, which implies that these polynomials are all weak IP instances. Moreover, we study the cardinality of an equivalence class containing the binomial $aX^{2q^i } + bX^{2q^j } (i \ne j)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n } $ without the restriction that char($(\mathbb{F}_q )$) = 2, which gives us a deeper understanding of finite geometry as a tool to investigate the enumeration problem of IP.
An overpartition analogue of Bressoud conjecture for even moduli

Abstract:In 1980, Bressoud conjectured a combinatorial identity $A_j=B_j$ for $j=0$ or $1$. In this paper, we introduce a new partition function $\overline{B}_0$ which can be viewed as an overpartition analogue of the partition function $B_0$. An overpartition is a partition such that the last occurrence of a part can be overlined. We build a bijection to get a relationship between $\overline{B}_0$ and $B_1$, based on which an overpartition analogue of Bressoud's conjecture for $j=0$ is obtained.

Abstract:Given a partition $\lambda$, we write $e_j(\lambda)$ for the $j^{\textrm{th}}$ elementary symmetric polynomial $e_j$ evaluated at the parts of $\lambda$ and $e_jp_A(n)$ for the sum of $e_j(\lambda)$ as $\lambda$ ranges over the set of partitions of $n$ with parts in $A$. For $e_jp_A(n)$, we prove analogs of the classical formula for the partition function, $p(n)=1/n \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\sigma_1(n-k)p(k)$, where $\sigma_1$ is the sum of divisors function. We prove several congruences for $e_2p_4(n)$, the sum of $e_2$ over the set of partitions of $n$ into four parts. Define the function $\textrm{pre}_j(\lambda)$ to be the multiset of monomials in $e_j(\lambda)$, which is itself a partition. If $\mathcal A$ is a set of partitions, we define $\textrm{pre}_j(\mathcal A)$ to be the set of partitions $\textrm{pre}_j(\lambda)$ as $\lambda$ ranges over $\mathcal A$. If $\mathcal P(n)$ is the set of all partitions of $n$, we conjecture that the number of odd partitions in $\textrm{pre}_2(\mathcal P(n))$ is at least the number of distinct partitions. We prove some results about $\textrm{pre}_2(\mathcal B(n))$, where $\mathcal B(n)$ is the set of binary partitions of $n$. We conclude with conjectures on the log-concavity of functions related to $e_jp(n)$, the sum of $e_j(\lambda)$ for all $\lambda\in \mathcal P(n)$.
