Abstract:Mesoscopic superposition states of photons can be prepared in three cavities interacting with the same two-level atom. By periodically modulating the three cavity frequencies around the transition frequency of the atom with a 2π/3 phase difference, the time reversal symmetry is broken and an optical circulator is generated with chiralities depending on the quantum state of the atom. A superposition of the atomic states can guide photons from one cavity to a mesoscopic superposition of the other two cavities. The physics can be understood in a finite spin-orbit-coupled Fock-state lattice where the atom and the cavities carry the spin and the orbit degrees of freedom, respectively. This scheme can be realized in circuit QED architectures and provides a new platform for exploring quantum information and topological physics in novel lattices.

Abstract:The discrete states resulting from three-dimensional confinement in semiconductor quantum dots retain much of the character of their bulk-band origins, for example their angular momentum and effective mass. In addition they have many features of discrete atomic-like single particle states. Strong optical field interactions and reasonable dephasing rates make this system attractive for basic quantum optics experiments, as well as applications in quantum information sciences. However, semiconductor quantum dots have large inhomogeneous state broadens due to variations in size and shape. In addition, epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots, one of the classes in common use, rarely have ideal symmetry. Here we show how an optical technique can be used to fine-tune the transition energies of semiconductor quantum dots states and if desired restore targeted symmetry elements. This approach can be applied to establish degeneracies in biexciton-exciton decays to form discrete entangled photon pairs or to establish indistinguishability between different quantum dots.

Abstract:We report the design of a solid-state, micron-sized hemispherical cavity that yields significantly enhanced extraction efficiency with modest Purcell enhancement from embedded quantum emitters. A simple analytical model provides a guideline for the design and optimization of the structure, while finite-difference time-domain simulations are used for full analysis of the optimum structure. Cavity modes with up to 90% extraction efficiency, a Purcell enhancement factor >2, and a quality factor of ≈50 are achieved. In addition, Gaussian-like far-field beam profiles with low divergence are exhibited for several modes. These monolithic cavities are promising for solid-state emitters buried in a high dielectric environment, such as self-assembled quantum dots and optically active defects in diamond.
Entanglement generation and quantum information transfer between spatially-separated qubits in different cavities

Abstract:The generation and control of quantum states of spatially-separated qubits distributed in different cavities constitute fundamental tasks in cavity quantum electrodynamics. An interesting question in this context is how to prepare entanglement and realize quantum information transfer between qubits located at different cavities, which are important in large-scale quantum information processing. In this paper, we consider a physical system consisting of two cavities and three qubits. Two of the qubits are placed in two different cavities while the remaining one acts as a coupler, which is used to connect the two cavities. We propose an approach for generating quantum entanglement and implementing quantum information transfer between the two spatially-separated intercavity qubits. The quantum operations involved in this proposal are performed by a virtual photon process, and thus the cavity decay is greatly suppressed during the operations. In addition, to complete the present tasks, only one coupler qubit and one operation step are needed. Moreover, there is no need of applying classical pulses, so that the engineering complexity is much reduced and the operation procedure is greatly simplified. Finally, our numerical results illustrate that high-fidelity implementation of this proposal using superconducting phase qubits and one-dimenstion transmision line resonators is feasible for current circuit QED implementations. This proposal can also be applied to other types of superconducting qubits, including flux and charge qubits.

Abstract:Quantum state transfer from flying photons to stationary matter qubits is an important element in the realization of quantum networks. Self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots provide a promising solid-state platform hosting both single photon and spin, with an inherent light-matter interface. Here, we develop a method to coherently and actively control the single-photon frequency bins in superposition using electro-optic modulators, and measure the spin-photon entanglement with a fidelity of 0.796±0.020. Further, by Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-type state projection on the frequency, path, and polarization degrees of freedom of a single photon, we demonstrate quantum state transfer from a single photon to a single electron spin confined in an InGaAs quantum dot, separated by 5 m. The quantum state mapping from the photon's polarization to the electron's spin is demonstrated along three different axes on the Bloch sphere, with an average fidelity of 78.5%.

Abstract:In this paper, a scalable photonic crystal cavity array, in which single embedded quantum dots (QDs) are coherently interacting, is studied theoretically. Firstly, we examine the spectral character and optical delay brought about by the coupled cavities interacting with single QDs, in an optical analogue to electromagnetically induced transparency. Secondly, we then examine the usability of this coupled QD-cavity system for quantum phase gate operation and our numerical examples suggest that a two-qubit system with fidelity above 0.99 and photon loss below 0.04 is possible.

Abstract:Recent experiments have demonstrated that for a quantum dot in an optical resonator off-resonant cavity mode emission can occur even for detunings of the order of 10 meV. We show that Coulomb mediated Auger processes based on additional carriers in delocalized states can facilitate this far off-resonant emission. Using a novel theoretical approach for a non-perturbative treatment of the Auger-assisted quantum-dot carrier recombination, we present numerical calculations of the far off-resonant cavity feeding rate and cavity mean photon number confirming efficient coupling at higher densities of carriers in the delocalized states. In comparison to fast Auger-like intraband scattering processes, we find a reduced overall efficiency of Coulomb-mediated interband transitions due the required electron-hole correlations for the recombination processes.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for transferring an entanglement of zero- and one-photon states from one cavity to another. The scheme, which has 100% success probability, is mainly based on a two-mode cavity dispersively interacting with a three-level atom in the A configuration and does not involve Bell-state measurement. Abstract:It has been shown that there are not only transverse but also longitudinal couplings between microwave fields and a superconducting qubit with broken inversion symmetry of the potential energy. Using multiphoton processes induced by longitudinal coupling fields and frequency matching conditions, we design a universal algorithm to produce arbitrary superpositions of two-mode photon states of microwave fields in two separated transmission line resonators, which are coupled to a superconducting qubit. Based on our algorithm, we analyze the generation of evenly-populated states and NOON states. Compared to other proposals with only single-photon process, we provide an efficient way to produce entangled microwave photon states when the interactions between superconducting qubits and microwave fields are in the strong and ultrastrong regime.
Quantum State Control in Single Quantum Dots and the Coupling with Photonic Crystal Cavities (conference Presentation)

Abstract:To implement solid-state quantum information processing, precision control of quantum states in single quantum dots including charges, spins and wavefunctions are highly desirable. For a single quantum dot based photocurrent device, single hole spins were initialized with a high fidelity by controlling carrier tunneling rates with a resonant excitation, The tunneling rates are tuned by controlling the wavefunciton spread with an external magnetic field. In addition, many-body exciton states in a coupled system with a single self-assembled quantum dot and a wetting layer are observed by strong anomalous diamagnetic shifts. A tremendous positive diamagnetic coefficient is observed when an electron in the wetting layer combines with a hole in quantum dot, which is nearly one order of magnitude larger than that of the excitonic states confined in quantum dots. When the electrons recombine with holes within quantum dot in the coupled system, a peculiar negative diamagnetic effect is observed. To scale up the quantum dot-based quantum photonic network, photonic crystal cavities with high quality factors around 10000 are fabricated with single quantum dots located in antinode position of the cavity. Selective spin enhancement from single quantum dots in the cavity are observed for each branch in Zeeman splitting because of the Purcell effect, particularly can be precisely controlled with a vector magnetic field. Strong coupling for cavity QED between different excitonic states in a single quantum dot and the cavity will be presented, which has potential applications in realizing quantum nodes for quantum photonic network.
Few-Photon SUPER: Quantum emitter inversion via two off-resonant photon modes

Abstract:With the realization of controlled quantum systems, exploring excitations beyond the resonant case opens new possibilities. We investigate an extended Jaynes-Cummings model where two photon modes are coupled off-resonantly to a quantum emitter. This allows us to identify few-photon scattering mechanisms that lead to a full inversion of the emitter while transferring off-resonant photons from one mode to another. This behaviour connects to recent measurements of a two-level emitter scattering two off-resonant photons simultaneously. Furthermore, our results can be understood as quantized analogue of the recently developed off-resonant quantum control scheme known as Swing-UP of quantum EmitteR (SUPER). Our intuitive formalism gives a deeper insight into the interaction of a two-level emitter with off-resonant light modes with the prospect of novel photonic applications.

Abstract: We propose a scheme for the complete differentiation of 64 three-photon hyperentangled GHZ states in both polarization and spatial-mode degrees of freedoms using the quantum-dot cavity system. The three-photon hyperentangled-GHZ-state-analysis scheme can also be used to generate 3-photon hyperentangled GHZ states. This proposed hyperentangled analysis and generation device can serve as crucial components of the high-capacity, long-distance quantum communication. We use quantum swapping as an example to show the application of this device in quantum communication with polarization and spatial-mode degrees of freedoms. Using numerical calculations, we show that the present scheme may be feasible in strong-coupling regimes with current technologies.
Magneto-optical properties of a quantum dot array interacting with a far-infrared photon mode of a cylindrical cavity

Abstract:We model the equilibrium properties of a two-dimensional electron gas in a square lateral superlattice of quantum dots in a GaAs heterostructure subject to an external homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field and a far-infrared circular cylindrical photon cavity with one quantized mode, the TE011 mode. In a truncated linear basis constructed by a tensor product of the single-electron states of the noninteracting system and the eigenstates of the photon number operator, a local spin density approximation of density functional theory is used to compute the electron-photon states of the two-dimensional electron gas in the cavity. The common spatial symmetry of the vector fields for the external magnetic field and the cavity photon field in the long wavelength approximation enhances higher order magnetic single- and multi-photon processes for both the para- and the diamagnetic electron-photon interactions. The electron-photon coupling introduces explicit photon replicas into the bandstructure and all subbands gain a photon content, constant for each subband, that can deviate from an integer value as the coupling is increased or the photon energy is varied. The subbands show a complex Rabi anticrossing behavior when the photon energy and the coupling bring subbands into resonances. The complicated energy subband structure leads to photon density variations in reciprocal space when resonances occur in the spectrum. The electron-photon coupling polarizes the charge density and tends to reduce the Coulomb exchange effects as the coupling strength increases.

Abstract:In the SUPER scheme (Swing-UP of the quantum EmitteR population), excitation of a quantum emitter is achieved with two off-resonant, red-detuned laser pulses. This allows generation of high-quality single photons without the need of complex laser stray light suppression or careful spectral filtering. In the present work, we extend this promising method to quantum emitters, specifically semiconductor quantum dots, inside a resonant optical cavity. A significant advantage of the Super scheme is identified in that it eliminates re-excitation of the quantum emitter by suppressing photon emission during the excitation cycle. This, in turn, leads to almost ideal single photon purity, overcoming a major factor typically limiting the quality of photons generated with quantum dots in high quality cavities. We further find that for cavity-mediated biexciton emission of degenerate photon pairs the Super scheme leads to near-perfect biexciton initialization with very high values of polarization entanglement of the emitted photon pairs.

Abstract:Scalable architectures for quantum information technologies require to selectively couple long-distance qubits while suppressing environmental noise and cross-talk. In semiconductor materials, the coherent coupling of a single spin on a quantum dot to a cavity hosting fermionic modes offers a new solution to this technological challenge. Here, we demonstrate coherent coupling between two spatially separated quantum dots using an electronic cavity design that takes advantage of whispering-gallery modes in a two-dimensional electron gas. The cavity-mediated long-distance coupling effectively minimizes undesirable direct cross-talk between the dots and defines a scalable architecture for all-electronic semiconductor-based quantum information processing.

Abstract:We propose a method for transferring quantum entangled states of two photonic cat-state qubits (cqubits) from two microwave cavities to the other two microwave cavities. This proposal is realized by using four microwave cavities coupled to a superconducting flux qutrit. Because of using four cavities with different frequencies, the inter-cavity crosstalk is significantly reduced. Since only one coupler qutrit is used, the circuit resources is minimized. The entanglement transfer is completed with a single-step operation only, thus this proposal is quite simple. The third energy level of the coupler qutrit is not populated during the state transfer, therefore decoherence from the higher energy level is greatly suppressed. Our numerical simulations show that high-fidelity transfer of two-cqubit entangled states from two transmission line resonators to the other two transmission line resonators is feasible with current circuit QED technology. This proposal is universal and can be applied to accomplish the same task in a wide range of physical systems, such as four microwave or optical cavities, which are coupled to a natural or artificial three-level atom.

Abstract:Quantum emitters are a key component in photonic quantum technologies. Enhancing their single-photon emission by engineering the photonic environment using cavities can significantly improve the overall efficiency in quantum information processing. However, this enhancement is often constrained by the need for precise nanoscale control over the emitter's position within micro- or nano-cavities. Inspired by the fascinating physics of moiré patterns, we present an approach to strongly modify the spontaneous emission rate of a quantum emitter using a finely designed multilayer moiré photonic crystal with a robust isolated-flatband dispersion. Theoretical analysis reveals that, due to its nearly infinite photonic density of states, the moiré cavity can simultaneously achieve a high Purcell factor and exhibit large tolerance over the emitter's position. We experimentally demonstrate the coupling between this moiré cavity and a quantum dot through the cavity-determined polarization of the dot's emission. The radiative lifetime of the quantum dot can be tuned by a factor of 40, ranging from 42 ps to 1692 ps, which is attributed to strong Purcell enhancement and Purcell inhibition effects. Our findings pave the way for moiré flatband cavity-enhanced quantum light sources, quantum optical switches, and quantum nodes for quantum internet applications.

Proposal for a cavity-induced measurement of the exchange coupling in quantum dots

Abstract:In spin qubit arrays the exchange coupling can be harnessed to implement two-qubit gates and to realize intermediate-range qubit connectivity along a spin bus. In this work, we propose a scheme to characterize the exchange coupling between electrons in adjacent quantum dots. We investigate theoretically the transmission of a microwave resonator coupled to a triple quantum dot (TQD) occupied by two electrons. We assume that the right quantum dot (QD) is always occupied by one electron while the second electron can tunnel between the left and center QD. If the two electrons are in adjacent dots they interact via the exchange coupling. By means of analytical calculations we show that the transmission profile of the resonator directly reveals the value of the exchange coupling strength between two electrons. From perturbation theory up to second order we conclude that the exchange can still be identified in the presence of magnetic gradients. A valley splitting comparable to the inter-dot tunnel coupling will lead to further modifications of the cavity transmission dips that also depend on the valley phases.

Abstract:Demands for single-photon sources are ubiquitous in quantum information processing as well as in quantum metrology. In many protocols for producing single photons, a cavity-emitter configuration is used. In such cavity quantum electrodynamical systems, the cavity can enforce a well-defined output mode for the photon and enhance its collection efficiency, while the emitter is indispensable for single photon emission. Here we show the two cavity-one two-level emitter configuration can be used to produce exclusively photon pairs, with each photon in a separate mode. Conditioning on detecting a photon in one of the modes, one heralds with high fidelity a single photon in the other mode. Counterintuitively, upon decreasing the coupling of the emitter to one of the modes, the heralding fidelity can further increase.
