Abstract:We give a decomposition of the jacobian variety of a generalized Fermat curve. This extends a result obtained by Auffarth, Lucchini-Arteche and Rojas on Humbert-Edge curves, which are a particular case of generalized Fermat curves.

Abstract:A \textit{Humbert-Edge curve of type} $n$ is a non-degenerate smooth complete intersection of $n-1$ diagonal quadrics. Such a curve has an interesting geometry since it has a natural action of the group $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^n$. We present here a decomposition of its Jacobian variety as a product of Prym-Tyurin varieties, and we compute the kernel of the corresponding isogeny.

Abstract:In this note we give explicit constructions of decomposable hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties over fields of characteristic $0$. These include hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties that are isogenous to a product of two absolutely simple hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties, a square of a hyperelliptic Jacobian variety, and a product of four hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties three of which are of the same dimension. As an application, we produce families of hyperelliptic curves with infinitely many quadratic twists having at least two rational non-Weierstrass points; and families of quadruples of hyperelliptic curves together with infinitely many square-free $d$ such that the quadratic twists of each of the curves by $d$ possess at least one rational non-Weierstrass point.

Abstract:Given a compact Riemann surface X with an action of a finite group G, the group algebra Q[G] provides an isogenous decomposition of its Jacobian variety JX, known as the group algebra decomposition of JX. We obtain a method to concretely build a decomposition of this kind. Our method allows us to study the geometry of the decomposition. For instance, we build several decompositions in order to determine which one has kernel of smallest order. We apply this method to families of trigonal curves up to genus 10.

Abstract:Let be a smooth geometrically connected projective curve over the field of fractions of a discrete valuation ring , and a modulus on , given by a closed subscheme of which is geometrically reduced. The generalized Jacobian of with respect to is then an extension of the Jacobian of by a torus. We describe its Néron model, together with the character and component groups of the special fibre, in terms of a regular model of over . This generalizes Raynaud's well-known description for the usual Jacobian. We also give some computations for generalized Jacobians of modular curves with moduli supported on the cusps.

Abstract:A set of multi-homogeneous equations for the Jacobian of a genus two curve is given. The approach used is to write down affine equations for the Jacobian minus various tranlations of the Theta-divisor by [2]-division points, and then to write down affine glue equations for the overlaps. Taking multi-projective completions for all of these then yields a complete multi-projective two-dimensional variety whose points are in one-to-one correspondence with degree zero divisor classes on the curve (i.e. the Picard group). This multi-projective variety then becomes a complete projective two-dimensional variety under the Segre imbedding.

Abstract:Let $m\geq3$ be an integer. We show that every torsor of the Jacobian of the universal family of degree-$m$ Fermat curve is necessarily a connected component of the Picard scheme. We show that the Jacobian of the generic degree-$m$ Fermat curve has uncountably many non-isomorphic torsors. We give some results towards the Franchetta type problem for torsors of the Jacobian of the universal family of genus-$g$ curves over $\mathcal{M}_g$.

Abstract:The term degenerate is used to describe abelian varieties whose Hodge rings contain exceptional cycles -- Hodge cycles that are not generated by divisor classes. We can see the effect of the exceptional cycles on the structure of an abelian variety through its Mumford-Tate group, Hodge group, and Sato-Tate group. In this article we examine degeneracy through these different but related lenses. We specialize to a family of abelian varieties of Fermat type, namely Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of the form $y^2=x^m-1$. We prove that the Jacobian of the curve is degenerate whenever $m$ is an odd, composite integer. We explore the various forms of degeneracy for several examples, each illustrating different phenomena that can occur.

Various results on the finiteness and infiniteness of the set of generalized Jacobians with the above property are obtained depending on the geometric conditions on the support of , as well as on the conditions on the field k . These results are applied to the problem of the periodicity of a continued fraction expansion constructed in the field of formal power series for special elements of the field of functions of the hyperelliptic curve .

Abstract:Cardona and Lario ['Twists of the genus 2 curve ', J. Number Theory209 (2020), 195–211] gave a complete classification of the twists of the curve . In this paper, we study the twists of the curve whose automorphism group is defined over a biquadratic extension of the rationals. If the twists are of type B or C in the Cardona–Lario classification, we find a pair of elliptic curves whose product is isogenous with the Jacobian of the twist.

Abstract:L. Moret-Bailly constructed families of genus 2 curves with supersingular Jacobian. In this paper we first classify the reducible fibers of a Moret-Bailly family using linear algebra over a quaternion algebra. The main result is an algorithm that exploits properties of two reducible fibers to compute a hyperelliptic model for any irreducible fiber of a Moret-Bailly family.

Abstract:For a complex polynomial $D(t)$ of even degree, one may define the continued fraction of $\sqrt{D(t)}$. This was found relevant already by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev, concerning integration of (hyperelliptic) differentials; they realized that, contrary to the classical case of square roots of positive integers treated by Lagrange and Galois, we do not always have pre-periodicity of the partial quotients. In this paper we shall prove that, however, a correct analogue of Lagrange's theorem still exists in full generality: pre-periodicity of the {\it degrees} of the partial quotients always holds. Apparently, this fact was never noted before. This also yields a corresponding formula for the degrees of the convergents, for which we shall prove new bounds which are generally best possible (halving the known ones). We shall further study other aspects of the continued fraction, like the growth of the heights of partial quotients. Throughout, some striking phenomena appear, related to the geometry of (generalized) Hyperelliptic Jacobians. Another conclusion central in this paper concerns the poles of the convergents: there can be only finitely many rational ones which occur infinitely many times. (This is crucial for applications to a function field version of a question of McMullen.) Our methods rely, among other things, on linking Padé approximants and convergents with divisor relations in generalized Jacobians; this shall allow an application of a version for algebraic groups, proved in this paper, of the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem.

Simplicity of some Jacobians with many automorphisms

Abstract:We study an explicit $(2g-1)$-dimensional family of Jacobian varieties of dimension $\frac{d-1}2(g-1)$, arising from quotient curves of unramified cyclic coverings of prime degree $d$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge 2$. By using a deformation argument, we prove that the generic element of the family is simple. Furthermore, we completely describe their endomorphism algebra, and we show that they admit a rank $\frac{d-1}2-1$ group of non-polarized automorphisms. As an application of these results, we prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map for étale cyclic coverings of hyperelliptic curves of odd prime degree under some slight numerical restrictions. This result generalizes in several directions previous results on genus 2.

Abstract:We study the Abel-Jacobi image of the Ceresa cycle $W_{k, e}-W_{k, e}^-$, where $W_{k, e}$ is the image of the $k$th symmetric product of a curve $X$ with a base point $e$ on its Jacobian variety. For certain Fermat quotient curves of genus $g$, we prove that for any choice of the base point and $k \leq g-2$, the Abel-Jacobi image of the Ceresa cycle is non-torsion. In particular, these cycles are non-torsion modulo rational equivalence.

Abstract:Using the compactified universal jacobian over the moduli space of stable marked curves, we give an expression in terms of natural classes of the zero section of the compactified universal jacobian the (rational) Chow ring. After extending variants of the Abel-Jacobi map to a locus containing curves of treelike type we give a formula for the pullback of the said zero section along these extensions. The same approach is also applied to recover known formulas for the pullback of theta divisors to the moduli space of marked stable curves.

Adinkra height functions and the Jacobian of a generalized Fermat curve

Abstract:Adinkras are highly structured graphs developed to study 1-dimensional supersymmetry algebras. A cyclic ordering of the edge colors of an Adinkra, or rainbow, determines a Riemann surface and a height function on the vertices of the Adinkra determines a divisor on this surface. We study the induced map from height functions to divisors on the Jacobian of the Riemann surface. In the first nontrivial case, a 5-dimensional hypercube corresponding to a Jacobian given by a product of 5 elliptic curves each with $j$-invariant 2048, we develop and characterize a purely combinatorial algorithm to compute height function images. We show that when restricted to a single elliptic curve, every height function is a multiple of a specified generating divisor, and raising and lowering vertices corresponds to adding or subtracting this generator. We also give strict bounds on the coefficients of this generator that appear in the collection of all divisors of height functions.

On Jacobians of geometrically reduced curves and their Néron models

Abstract:We study the structure of Jacobians of geometrically reduced curves over arbitrary (i. e., not necessarily perfect) fields. We show that, while such a group scheme cannot in general be decomposed into an affine and an Abelian part as over perfect fields, several important structural results for these group schemes nevertheless have close analoga over non-perfect fields. We apply our results to prove two conjectures due to Bosch-Lütkebohmert-Raynaud about the existence of Néron models and Néron lft-models over excellent Dedekind schemes in the special case of Jacobians of geometrically reduced curves. Finally, we prove some existence results for semi-factorial models and related objects for general geometrically integral curves in the local case.

Abstract:Plectic Stark-Heegner points were recently introduced to explore the arithmetic of higher rank elliptic curves: the concept was inspired by Nekovář and Scholl's plectic philosophy, while the construction is based on Bertolini and Darmon's groundbreaking use of the $p$-adic uniformization of Shimura curves to study the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. In this note we give a geometric interpretation of plectic Heegner points using the non-Archimedean uniformization of higher-dimensional quaternionic Shimura varieties. To this end, we define and study a plectic Jacobian functor from a category of Mumford varieties to topological groups extending the classical Jacobian functor on Mumford curves.
