Abstract:We propose a systematic approximation scheme to calculate general $n$-point $HSSA$ of open bosonic string theory. This stringy scaling loop expansion contains finite number of vacuum diagram terms at each loop order of scattering energy due to a vacuum diagram contraint and a topological graph constraint. In addition, we calculate coefficient and give the vacuum diagram representation and its Feynman rules for each term in the expansion of the $HSSA$. As an application to extending our previous calculation of $n$-point leading order stringy scaling behavior of $HSSA$, we explicitly calculate some examples of $4$-point next to leading order stringy scaling violation terms.

Abstract:We discover an infinite number of recurrence relations among Regge string scattering amplitudes [11, 30] of different string states at arbitrary mass levels in the open bosonic string theory. As a result, all Regge string scattering amplitudes can be algebraically solved up to multiplicative factors. Instead of decoupling zero-norm states in the fixed angle regime, the calculation is based on recurrence relations and addition theorem of Kummer functions of the second kind. These recurrence relations among Regge string scattering amplitudes are dual to linear relations or symmetries among high-energy fixed angle string scattering amplitudes discovered previously.

Abstract:We give a proof that the pure spinor superstring theory in a novel infinite tension limit, as was discussed recently by Berkovits, reproduces the tree-level scattering amplitudes of the ten-dimensional $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 super Yang-Mills in its heterotic version and type II supergravity in its type II version. The Yang-Mills case agrees with the result obtained by Mafra, Schlotterer, Stieberger and Tsimpis.

Abstract:Very recently two of the present authors have studied the chaos exponent of some Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK)-like models for arbitrary interaction strength [1]. These models carry supersymmetric (SUSY) or SUSY-like structures. Namely, bosons and Majorana fermions are both present and each of them interacts with ( q − 1) particles, but the model is not necessarily supersymmetric. It was found that the chaos exponents in different models, no matter whether they carry SUSY(-like) structures or not, all follow a universal single-parameter scaling law for large q , and by tuning that parameter continuously a flow from maximally chaotic to completely regular motion results. Here we report a string-theoretical analog of this chaotic phenomenon. Specifically, we consider closed string scattering near the two-sided AdS black hole, whose amplitude grows exponentially in the Schwarzschild time, with a rate determined by the Regge spin of the Pomeron exchanged during string scattering. We calculate the Pomeron Regge spin for strings of different types, including the bosonic string, the type II superstring and the heterotic superstring. We find that the Pomeron Regge spin also displays a single-parameter scaling behavior independent of string types, with the parameter depending on the string length and the length scale characterizing the spacetime curvature; moreover, the scaling function has the same limiting behaviors as that for the chaos exponent of SYK-like models. Remarkably, the flow from maximally chaotic to completely regular motion in SYK-like models corresponds to the flow of the Pomeron Regge spin from 2 to 1.

Abstract:We study the conformal field theory data (CFT-data) of planar 4D $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory in the strong 't Hooft coupling limit. This regime explores the physics of massive short strings in the flat-space limit of the dual AdS. We focus on the CFT-data of the massive short strings exchanged in the operator product expansion (OPE) of the four-point function dual to the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude. This CFT-data arranges itself into Regge trajectories in the flat-space limit. Using inputs from recent advances in the computation of the AdS Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude, integrability, and a stipulation based on analyticity of the CFT-data in spin, we are able to fix all the CFT-data on the four unique sub-leading Regge trajectories, at leading non-trivial order, as a function of the string-mass level. One of our predictions is that one of the four unique sub-leading Regge trajectories decouples from the OPE in the flat-space limit. This hints at an emergent selection rule in the flat-space limit, similar to our previous results in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2310.06041" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2310.06041">arXiv:2310.06041</a>. Our procedure should be applicable in a variety of similar setups like for the AdS Veneziano amplitude or in ABJM.

Abstract:In a recent note we presented a compact formula for the complete tree-level S-matrix of pure Yang-Mills and gravity theories in arbitrary spacetime dimension. In this paper we show that a natural formulation also exists for a massless colored cubic scalar theory. In Yang-Mills, the formula is an integral over the space of n marked points on a sphere and has as integrand two factors. The first factor is a combination of Parke-Taylor-like terms dressed with U(N ) color structures while the second is a Pfaffian. The S-matrix of a U(N ) × U(Ñ ) cubic scalar theory is obtained by simply replacing the Pfaffian with a U(Ñ ) version of the previous U(N ) factor. Given that gravity amplitudes are obtained by replacing the U(N ) factor in Yang-Mills by a second Pfaffian, we are led to a natural color-kinematics correspondence. An expansion of the integrand of the scalar theory leads to sums over trivalent graphs and are directly related to the KLT matrix. Combining this and the Yang-Mills formula we find a connection to the BCJ color-kinematics duality as well as a new proof of the BCJ doubling property that gives rise to gravity amplitudes. We end by considering a special kinematic point where the partial amplitude simply counts the number of color-ordered planar trivalent trees, which equals a Catalan number. The scattering equations simplify dramatically and are equivalent to a special Y-system with solutions related to roots of Chebyshev polynomials. The sum of the integrand over the solutions gives rise to a representation of Catalan numbers in terms of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of an A-type Dynkin diagram.
The Stringy S-matrix Bootstrap: Maximal Spin and Superpolynomial Softness

Abstract:We explore the space of meromorphic amplitudes with extra constraints coming from the shape of the leading Regge trajectory. This information comes in two guises: it bounds the maximal spin of exchanged particles of a given mass; it leads to sum rules obeyed by the discontinuity of the amplitude, which express the softness of scattering at high energies. We assume that the leading Regge trajectory is linear, and we derive bounds on the low-energy Wilson coefficients using the dual and primal approaches. For the graviton-graviton scattering in four dimensions, the maximal spin constraint leads to slightly more stringent bounds than those that follow from general constraints of analyticity, crossing, and unitarity. The exponential softness at high energies is manifest in our primal approach and is not used in our implementation of the dual approach. Nevertheless, we observe the agreement between the bounds obtained from both. We conclude that high-energy superpolynomial softness does not leave an obvious imprint on the low-energy observables. We exhibit a unitary three-parameter deformation of the Veneziano amplitude for the open string case. It has a novel, exponentially soft behavior at high energies and fixed angles. We generalize the previous analysis of this regime and present a stringy version of the lower bound on high-energy, fixed-angle scattering by Cerulus and Martin.

Anomalous Dimensions from Soft Regge Constants

Abstract:Using an effective field theory (EFT) formalism for forward scattering, we reconsider the factorization of $2\to 2$ scattering amplitudes in the Regge limit. Expanding the amplitude in gauge invariant operators labelled by the number of Glauber exchanges, allows us to further factorize the standard impact factors into separate collinear and soft functions. The soft functions are universal, and describe radiative corrections to the Reggeized gluon states exchanged by the collinear projectiles. Remarkably, we find that the one-loop soft function for the single Reggeized gluon state is given to $\mathcal{O}(\epsilon)$ in terms of the two-loop cusp and two-loop rapidity anomalous dimensions. We argue that this iterative structure follows from the simple action of crossing symmetry in the forward scattering limit, which in the EFT allows us to replace the divergent part of a soft loop by a much simpler Glauber loop. We use this correspondence to provide a simple calculation of the two-loop Regge trajectory using the EFT. We then explore its implications at higher perturbative orders, and derive the maximally matter dependent contributions to the Regge trajectory to all loop orders, i.e.~the terms $\sim \alpha_s^{k+1}n_f^k$ for any $k$, where $n_f$ is the number of massless flavors. These simplifications suggests that the EFT approach to the Regge limit will be helpful to explore and further understand the structure of the Regge limit.

Abstract:We calculate explicitly residues of all n -point Koba-Nielsen (KN) amplitudes by using on-shell recursion relation of string scattering amplitudes (SSA). In addition, we show that the residues of all SSA including the KN amplitudes can be expressed in terms of the Lauricella functions. This result demonstrates the exact SL(K+3,C) symmetry of the tree-level open bosonic string theory. Moreover, we derive an iteration relation among the residues of a given SSA. This iteration relation is related to the SL(K+3,C) symmetry and can presumably be used to soften the well-known hard SSA.

Abstract:We review the Regge and multi-Regge limit of scattering amplitudes in gauge theory, focusing on QCD and its maximally supersymmetric cousin, planar ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We identify the large logarithms that are developed in these limits, and the progress that has been made in resumming them, towards next-to-next-to-leading logarithms for BFKL evolution in QCD, as well as all-orders proposals in planar ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory and the perturbative checks of those proposals. We also cover the application of single-valued multiple polylogarithms to this important kinematical limit of particle scattering.

Abstract:In {\em Phys.\ Lett.} {\bf B 660}, 583 (2008), it was proposed that the D-brane geometry could be produced by open string quantum effects. In an effort to verify the proposal, we consider scattering amplitudes involving {\em massive} open superstrings. The main goal of this paper is to set the ground for two-loop "renormalization" of an oriented open superstring on a D-brane and to strengthen our skill in the pure spinor formulation of a superstring, an effective tool for multi-loop string diagrams. We start by reviewing scattering amplitudes of massless states in the 2D component method of the NSR formulation. A few examples of massive string scattering are worked out. The NSR results are then reproduced in the pure spinor formulation. We compute the amplitudes using the massive vertex operator constructed by Berkovits and Chandia in {\em JHEP} {\bf 0208}, 040 (2002). We point out that it may be possible to discover new Riemann type identities involving Jacobi $\vartheta$-functions by comparing a NSR computation and the corresponding pure spinor computation.

Scattering amplitudes of stable curves

Abstract:Equations of hypertree divisors on the Grothendieck-Knudsen moduli space of stable rational curves, introduced by Castravet and Tevelev, appear as numerators of scattering amplitude forms for n massless particles in N=4 Yang-Mills theory in the work of Arkani-Hamed, Bourjaily, Cachazo, Postnikov and Trnka. Rather than being a coincidence, this is just the tip of the iceberg of an exciting relation between algebraic geometry and high energy physics. We interpret leading singularities of scattering amplitude forms of massless particles as probabilistic Brill-Noether theory: the study of statistics of images of n marked points under a random meromorphic function uniformly distributed with respect to the translation-invariant volume form of the Jacobian. We focus on the maximum helicity violating regime, which leads to a beautiful physics-inspired geometry for various classes of algebraic curves: smooth, stable, hyperelliptic, real algebraic, etc.

A KLT-like construction for multi-Regge amplitudes

Abstract:Inspired by the calculational steps originally performed by Kawai, Lewellen and Tye, we decompose scattering amplitudes with single-valued coefficients obtained in the multi-Regge-limit of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory into products of scattering amplitudes with multi-valued coefficients. We consider the simplest non-trivial situation: the six-point remainder function complementing the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov ansatz for multi-loop amplitudes. Utilizing inverse Mellin transformations, all single-valued amplitude components can indeed be decomposed into multi-valued amplitude components. Although the final expression is very similar in structure to the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye construction, moving away from the highly symmetric string scenario comes with several imponderabilities, some of which become more pronounced when considering more than six external legs in the remainder function.

Abstract:In a previous paper we proposed a factorization principle for the correlation functions of Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) operators in free $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. These correlators are conjectured to described physical string amplitudes in an infinitely curved Ramond-Ramond pp-wave background. There was a puzzle that the factorization seems to break down for $S$-channel in the $2\rightarrow 2$ scattering process. Here we resolve this puzzle by including some diagrams missed in the previous paper. We also observe some interesting relations which further support the interpretation of higher genus correlators as physical string loop amplitudes.
Complex Saddles of Truncated String Amplitudes

Abstract:String scattering amplitudes in the high energy asymptotic region have been studied by saddle point approximation. Recently, it was pointed out that infinitely many complex saddles contribute to string amplitudes even at tree-level after redefining the original formal integration contour so that the new contour analytically continues amplitudes appropriately. It is a challenging problem to identify which saddles contribute to higher genus corrections of string amplitudes. In this paper, we construct QFT toy models which have the same infinite mass tower as string amplitudes but ignoring degeneracies. Their higher loop Feynman diagrams are evaluated by identifying their contributing complex saddles. We find that the saddles associated with infinitely many stringy excitations provide highly oscillatory terms to the amplitudes. We conjecture that string amplitudes, as functions of momenta, approach multi-fractal functions in the high energy asymptotic regions if higher genus contributions are fully included. Their fractal dimensions should be determined purely by the type of string theory and the spacetime dimension where string scatterings occur.

On the number of Regge trajectories for dual amplitudes

Abstract:Regge poles connect the analytic structure of scattering amplitudes, analytically continued in spin, to the high-energy limit in momentum space. Dual models are expected to have only Regge poles, and string theory suggests there should be an infinite number of them. In this study, we investigate the number of Regge trajectories these models may have. We prove, based solely on crossing symmetry and unitarity, that meromorphic amplitudes, with or without subtractions, cannot produce a reggeizing amplitude if they contain any finite number of Regge trajectories. We argue that this should exclude the existence of such amplitudes altogether. Additionally, we develop and apply a linear programming dual bootstrap method to exclude these amplitudes directly in momentum space.

Abstract:The IR-divergent scattering amplitudes of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be regulated in a variety of ways, including dimensional regularization and massive (or Higgs) regularization. The IR-finite part of an amplitude in different regularizations generally differs by an additive constant at each loop order, due to the ambiguity in separating finite and divergent contributions. We give a prescription for defining an unambiguous, regulator-independent finite part of the amplitude by factoring off a product of IR-divergent "wedge" functions. For the cases of dimensional regularization and the common-mass Higgs regulator, we define the wedge function in terms of a form factor, and demonstrate the regularization independence of the n-point amplitude through two loops. We also deduce the form of the wedge function for the more general differential-mass Higgs regulator, although we lack an explicit operator definition in this case. Finally, using extended dual conformal symmetry, we demonstrate the link between the differential-mass wedge function and the anomalous dual conformal Ward identity for the finite part of the scattering amplitude.

Relations Between Anomalous Dimensions in the Regge Limit

Abstract:We extend the recent formalism developed for computing rapidity anomalous dimension of form factors using unitarity to the problem of high-energy near forward scattering. By combining the factorization of $2\rightarrow 2$ scattering in the effective field theory (EFT) for Glauber operators with definite signature amplitudes, we derive an expression that relates anomalous dimensions (including Regge trajectories) to cut amplitudes, leading to significant computational simplifications. We demonstrate this explicitly by computing the one and two-loop Regge trajectories. Our formalism can also be used to bootstrap anomalous dimensions of operators not related by symmetries. As an example, we show that the full anomalous dimensions (including both the Regge pole and cut pieces) of the two Glauber operator anti-symmetric octet operator, can be determined from the anomalous dimension of the single Glauber exchange operator. Many other such relations exist between other color channels at each order in $\alpha$.

Abstract:We analyze all individual cosmic strings of various lengths in a large ensemble of the global cosmic string networks in the post-inflationary scenario, obtained from numerical simulations on a discrete lattice with $N^3 = 4096^3$. A strong evidence for a logarithmically growing spectral index of the string power spectrum during the evolution is newly reported as our main result. The logarithmic scaling is checked against two different approaches for generating initial random field configurations, namely fat-string type and thermal phase transition. We derive the analytic relation between two power spectra of cosmic strings and axions which should be valid under some assumptions, and the validity of those assumptions is discussed. We argue that our analytic result strongly supports the correlated spectra of cosmic strings and axions. Additionally, we initiate the statistical analysis of the causal dynamics of the cosmic strings.
