Abstract:In this paper, we provide some of the necessary mathematics to describe higher order Lions-Taylor expansions. The Lions derivative of a functional on the Wasserstein space of measures quantifies infinitesimal perturbations on measures in terms of infinite variation on a linear space of random variables.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new interpretation of the Lions derivative as the Radon-Nikodym derivative of a vector measure, which provides a canonical extension of the Lions derivative for functions taking values in infinite dimensional Banach spaces. This is of particular relevance for the analysis of Hilbert space valued Mean-Field equations. As an illustration we derive a mild Ito-formula for Mean-Field stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs), which provides the basis for a higher order Taylor expansion and higher order numerical schemes.

Abstract:Let (X, tau(1)) and (Y, tau(2)) be two Hausdorff locally convex spaces with continuous duals X, and Y', respectively, L (X, Y) be the space of all continuous linear operators from X into Y, K (X, Y) be the space of all compact operators of L (X, Y). Let WOT and UOT be the weak operator topology and uniform operator topology on K (X, Y), respectively. In this paper, we characterize a full-invariant property of K (X, Y); that is, if the sequence space X has the signed-weak gliding hump property, then each; lambda-multiplier WOT-convergent series Sigma(i) T-i in K(X, Y) must be X-multiplier convergent with respect to all topologies between WOT and UOT if and only if each continuous linear operator T: (X, tau(1)) --> or (lambda(beta), sigma(lambda(beta),lambda)) is compact. Abstract:This paper derives a way to express differentiable complex-valued functions as the sum of powers of $(1-e^{\lambda x})$, where $\lambda\in\mathbb{R}$, with an explicit formula for the remainder. This formulation is then used to associate an infinite series to $C^\infty$ functions, which is shown to recover the original function under suitable conditions on the remainder. These results are also used to calculate some infinite series involving Stirling Numbers, as well as providing a few examples.

Abstract:The solutions of parabolic and hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by an infinite dimensional Brownian motion, which is a martingale, are in general not semi-martingales any more and therefore do not satisfy an Itô formula like the solutions of finite dimensional stochastic differential equations (SODEs). In particular, it is not possible to derive stochastic Taylor expansions as for the solutions of SODEs using an iterated application of the Itô formula. However, in this article we introduce Taylor expansions of solutions of SPDEs via an alternative approach, which avoids the need of an Itô formula. The main idea behind these Taylor expansions is to use first classical Taylor expansions for the nonlinear coefficients of the SPDE and then to insert recursively the mild presentation of the solution of the SPDE. The iteration of this idea allows us to derive stochastic Taylor expansions of arbitrarily high order. Combinatorial concepts of trees and woods provide a compact formulation of the Taylor expansions.

Abstract:We study properties of distributions of random variables with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized L\"{u}roth series (GLS) expansions (the family of GLS-expansions contains L\"{u}roth expansion and $Q_{\infty}$- and $G_{\infty}^2$-expansions). To this end, we explore fractal properties of the family of Cantor-like sets $C[\mathit{GLS},V]$ consisting of real numbers whose GLS-expansions contain only symbols from some countable set $V\subset N\cup\{0\}$, and derive exact formulae for the determination of the Hausdorff--Besicovitch dimension of $C[\mathit{GLS},V]$. Based on these results, we get general formulae for the Hausdorff--Besicovitch dimension of the spectra of random variables with independent identically distributed GLS-symbols for the case where all but countably many points from the unit interval belong to the basis cylinders of GLS-expansions.

Abstract:Fractional calculus is the calculus of differentiation and integration of non-integer orders. In a recently paper (Annals of Physics 323 (2008) 2756-2778), the Fundamental Theorem of Fractional Calculus is highlighted. Based on this theorem, in this paper we introduce fractional series expansion method to fractional calculus. We define a kind of fractional Taylor series of an infinitely fractionally-differentiable function. Further, based on our definition we generalize hypergeometric functions and derive corresponding differential equations. For finitely fractionally-differentiable functions, we observe that the non-infinitely fractionally-differentiability is due to more than one fractional indices. We expand functions with two fractional indices and display how this kind of series expansion can help to solve fractional differential equations.

Abstract:Higher order derivatives of functions are structured high dimensional objects which lend themselves to many alternative representations, with the most popular being multi-index, matrix and tensor representations. The choice between them depends on the desired analysis since each presents its own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we highlight a vectorized representation, in which higher order derivatives are expressed as vectors. This allows us to construct an elegant and rigorous algebra of vector-valued functions of vector variables, which would be unwieldy, if not impossible, to do so using the other representations. The fundamental results that we establish for this algebra of differentials are the identification theorems, with concise existence and uniqueness properties, between differentials and derivatives of an arbitrary order. From these fundamental identifications, we develop further analytic tools, including a Leibniz rule for the product of functions, and a chain rule (Faà di Bruno's formula) for the composition of functions. To complete our exposition, we illustrate how existing tools (such as Taylor's theorem) can be incorporated into and generalized within our framework of higher order differential calculus.

Extensional Taylor Expansion

Abstract:We introduce a calculus of extensional resource terms. These are resource terms à la Ehrhard-Regnier, but in infinitely eta-long form. The calculus still retains a finite syntax and dynamics: in particular, we prove strong confluence and normalization. Then we define an extensional version of Taylor expansion, mapping ordinary lambda-terms to (possibly infinite) linear combinations of extensional resource terms: like in the ordinary case, the dynamics of our resource calculus allows us to simulate the beta-reduction of lambda-terms; the extensional nature of this expansion shows in the fact that we are also able to simulate eta-reduction. In a sense, extensional resource terms contain a language of finite approximants of Nakajima trees, much like ordinary resource terms can be seen as a richer version of finite Böhm trees. We show that the equivalence induced on lambda-terms by the normalization of extensional Taylor-expansion is nothing but H*, the greatest consistent sensible lambda-theory - which is also the theory induced by Nakajima trees. This characterization provides a new, simple way to exhibit models of H*: it becomes sufficient to model the extensional resource calculus and its dynamics. The extensional resource calculus moreover allows us to recover, in an untyped setting, a connection between Taylor expansion and game semantics that was previously limited to the typed setting. Indeed, simply typed, eta-long, beta-normal resource terms are known to be in bijective correspondence with plays in the sense of Hyland-Ong game semantics, up to Melliès' homotopy equivalence. Extensional resource terms are the appropriate counterpart of eta-long resource terms in an untyped setting: we spell out the bijection between normal extensional resource terms and isomorphism classes of augmentations (a canonical presentation of plays up to homotopy) in the universal arena.

Abstract:In this article, we study $m$-order logarithmic Laplacian $\mathcal{L}_m$, which is a singular integro-differential operator with symbol $\big(2\ln |\cdot|\big)^m$ by the Fourier transform. Moreover, we analyze qualitative properties of these operators based on the order $m$, such as basic regularity and the Dirichlet eigenvalues.

Abstract:Originating in Girard's Linear logic, Ehrhard and Regnier's Taylor expansion of $\lambda$-terms has been broadly used as a tool to approximate the terms of several variants of the $\lambda$-calculus. Many results arise from a Commutation theorem relating the normal form of the Taylor expansion of a term to its Böhm tree. This led us to consider extending this formalism to the infinitary $\lambda$-calculus, since the $\Lambda_{\infty}^{001}$ version of this calculus has Böhm trees as normal forms and seems to be the ideal framework to reformulate the Commutation theorem. We give a (co-)inductive presentation of $\Lambda_{\infty}^{001}$. We define a Taylor expansion on this calculus, and state that the infinitary $\beta$-reduction can be simulated through this Taylor expansion. The target language is the usual resource calculus, and in particular the resource reduction remains finite, confluent and terminating. Finally, we state the generalised Commutation theorem and use our results to provide simple proofs of some normalisation and confluence properties in the infinitary $\lambda$-calculus.

Riemannian Geometry to Higher Order in the Infinitesimals

Abstract:Differential geometry may be generalized to allow infinitesimals to any order. The purpose of the present contribution is to show that the theory so developed expands received geometrical ideas in an interesting way, rich in potential for future exploration. The first order of business is to furnish the notion of a higher tangent vector, as defined abstractly by means of commutative algebra, with a workable interpretation in terms of spatial intuition. Then we introduce the differential calculus of the so-called jet connection, viz., an extension of the usual affine connection that takes higher tangent vectors as its arguments -- thereby enabling us to give a sense to parallel transport in the direction of a higher tangent, what has (to our knowledge) never been entertained before. After generalizing the Riemannian metric tensor to include a dependence up to any order in the infinitesimals, we arrive at natural analogues of the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor which display novel phenomena rooted in interactions among infinitesimals differing in order. Finally on the integral side, an intrinsic theory of integration adapted to integrands possibly of higher than first order in the differentials is developed, with a view towards eventually defining an action functional that will be applicable in the general theory of relativity.

Abstract:A general fractional Taylor formula and its computation for insufficiently smooth functions are discussed. The Aitken delta square method and epsilon algorithm are implemented to compute the critical orders of the local fractional derivatives, from which more critical orders are recovered by analysing the regular pattern of the fractional Taylor formula. The Richardson extrapolation method is used to calculate the local fractional derivatives with critical orders. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:We give an elementary symmetric function expansion for the expressions and when in terms of what we call -parking functions and lattice -parking functions. Here, and are certain eigenoperators of the modified Macdonald basis and . Our main results, in turn, give an elementary basis expansion at for symmetric functions of the form whenever F is expanded in terms of monomials, G is expanded in terms of the elementary basis, and J is expanded in terms of the modified elementary basis . Even the most special cases of this general Delta and Theta operator expression are significant; we highlight a few of these special cases. We end by giving an e-positivity conjecture for when t is not specialized, proposing that our objects can also give the elementary basis expansion in the unspecialized symmetric function.

Asymptotic Expansions of the Limit Laws of Gaussian and Laguerre (Wishart) Ensembles at the Soft Edge

Abstract:The large-matrix limit laws of the rescaled largest eigenvalue of the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic $n$-dimensional Gaussian ensembles -- and of the corresponding Laguerre ensembles (Wishart distributions) for various regimes of the parameter $\alpha$ (degrees of freedom $p$) -- are known to be the Tracy-Widom distributions $F_\beta$ ($\beta=1,2,4$). We will establish (paying particular attention to large, or small, ratios $p/n$) that, with careful choices of the rescaling constants and the expansion parameter $h$, the limit laws embed into asymptotic expansions in powers of $h$, where $h \asymp n^{-2/3}$ resp. $h \asymp (n\,\wedge\,p)^{-2/3}$. We find explicit analytic expressions of the first few expansions terms as linear combinations, with rational polynomial coefficients, of higher order derivatives of the limit law $F_\beta$. With a proper parametrization, the expansions in the Gaussian cases can be understood, for given $n$, as the limit $p\to\infty$ of the Laguerre cases. Whereas the results for $\beta=2$ are presented with proof, the discussion of the cases $\beta=1,4$ is based on some hypotheses, focussing on the algebraic aspects of actually computing the polynomial coefficients. For the purposes of illustration and validation, the various results are checked against simulation data with large sample sizes.

Abstract:We deal with the higher-order fractional Laplacians by two methods: the integral method and the system method. The former depends on the integral equation equivalent to the differential equation. The latter works directly on the differential equations. We first derive nonexistence of positive solutions, often known as the Liouville type theorem, for the integral and differential equations. Then through an delicate iteration, we show symmetry for positive solutions.

Abstract:This paper presents a reformulation of the Leibniz product rule as a finite sum that expresses the fractional derivative of the product of two differentiable functions. This paper then proves the cases for when the product consists of an arbitrary differentiable function and a Sheffer sequence , and the case for when the product consists of an arbitrary differentiable function and a confluent hypergeometric limiting function with a positive integer order. Finally, this paper provides example expressions for certain Sheffer sequences: any Apell sequence, the falling factorial, the rising factorial, the exponential polynomial, and the Associated Laguerre polynomial.

Abstract:We generalise Ehrhard and Regnier's Taylor expansion from pure to probabilistic $\lambda$-terms through notions of probabilistic resource terms and explicit Taylor expansion. We prove that the Taylor expansion is adequate when seen as a way to give semantics to probabilistic $\lambda$-terms, and that there is a precise correspondence with probabilistic Böhm trees, as introduced by the second author.

Higher Order Potential Expansion for the Continuous Limits of the Toda Hierarchy

Abstract:A method for introducing the higher order terms in the potential expansion to study the continuous limits of the Toda hierarchy is proposed in this paper. The method ensures that the higher order terms are differential polynomials of the lower ones and can be continued to be performed indefinitely. By introducing the higher order terms, the fewer equations in the Toda hierarchy are needed in the so-called recombination method to recover the KdV hierarchy. It is shown that the Lax pairs, the Poisson tensors and the Hamiltonians of the Toda hierarchy tend towards the corresponding ones of the KdV hierarchy in the continuous limit.
