Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the rate $O(\varepsilon^{1/2})$ of convergence in periodic homogenization of forced graphical mean curvature flows in the laminated setting. We also discuss with an example that a faster rate cannot be obtained by utilizing Lipscthiz estimates.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the CR (Cauchy-Riemann) Yamabe flow with zero CR Yamabe invariant. We use the CR Poincaré inequality and a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type interpolation inequality to show that this flow has the long time solution and the solution converges to a contact form with flat pseudo-Hermitian scalar curvature exponentially.

Abstract:Recently, Pipoli and Sinestrari [Pipoli, G. and Sinestrari, C., Mean curvature flow of pinched submanifolds of ℝℙ n , Comm. Anal. Geom. , 25 , 2017, 799–846] initiated the study of convergence problem for the mean curvature flow of small codimension in the complex projective space ℝℙ m . The purpose of this paper is to develop the work due to Pipoli and Sinestrari, and verify a new convergence theorem for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in the complex projective space. Namely, the authors prove that if the initial submanifold in ℝℙ m satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow converges to a round point in finite time, or converges to a totally geodesic submanifold as t → ∞. Consequently, they obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in the complex projective space.

Abstract:We consider the Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems with periodically distributed inclusions whose conduction parameter exhibits a significant contrast compared to the background media. We develop a unified method to quantify the convergence rates both as the periodicity of inclusions tends to zero and as the parameter approaches either zero or infinity. Based on the obtained convergence rates and a Campanato-type scheme, we also derive the regularity estimates that are uniform both in the periodicity and the contrast.

Abstract:We study the optimal rate of convergence in periodic homogenization of the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation $u^\varepsilon_t + H(\frac{x}{\varepsilon},Du^\varepsilon) = \varepsilon \Delta u^\varepsilon$ in $\mathbb R^n\times (0,\infty)$ subject to a given initial datum. We prove that $\|u^\varepsilon-u\|_{L^\infty(\mathbb R^n \times [0,T])} \leq C(1+T) \sqrt{\varepsilon}$ for any given $T>0$, where $u$ is the viscosity solution of the effective problem. Moreover, we show that the $O(\sqrt{\varepsilon})$ rate is optimal for a natural class of $H$ and a Lipschitz continuous initial datum, both theoretically and through numerical experiments. It remains an interesting question to investigate whether the convergence rate can be improved when $H$ is uniformly convex. Finally, we propose a numerical scheme for the approximation of the effective Hamiltonian based on a finite element approximation of approximate corrector problems.

Abstract:We study the rate of convergence in periodic homogenization for convex Hamilton--Jacobi equations with multiscales, where the Hamiltonian $H=H(x, y, p): \mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R }$ depends on both of the spatial variable and the oscillatory variable. In particular, we show that for the Cauchy problem, the rate of convergence is $O(\sqrt{\epsilon})$ by optimal control formulas, scale separations and curve cutting techniques. We also show the rate $O(\sqrt{\epsilon})$ of homogenization for the static problem based on the same idea. Additionally, we provide examples that illustrate the rate of convergence for the Cauchy problem is optimal.

Abstract:Let (M, g) be a closed Riemann surface. Castéras (Pac J Math 276:321–345, 2015) introduced a mean field type flow and obtained its global existence. For $$\rho \ne 8N\pi $$ , assuming in addition that $$J_\rho (v(t))\ge -C$$ for $$\rho >8\pi $$ , they showed the convergence of the flow. In this paper, we will prove the convergence of the flow for the critical case $$\rho =8\pi $$ with some appropriate initial data $$v_0$$ and some geometric hypothesis. In particular, this gives a new proof of Ding–Jost–Li–Wang’s result in (Asian J Math 1:230–248, 1997).

Abstract:We prove convergence of the nonlocal Allen-Cahn equation to mean curvature flow in the sharp interface limit, in the situation when the parameter corresponding to the kernel goes to zero fast enough with respect to the diffuse interface thickness. The analysis is done in the case of a $W^{1,1}$-kernel, under periodic boundary conditions and in both two and three space dimensions. We use the approximate solution and spectral estimate from the local case, and combine the latter with an $L^2$-estimate for the difference of the nonlocal operator and the negative Laplacian from Abels, Hurm <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.02264" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.02264">arXiv:2307.02264</a>. To this end, we prove a nonlocal Ehrling-type inequality to show uniform $H^3$-estimates for the nonlocal solutions.

Abstract:We revisit the homogenization problem for the Poisson equation in periodically perforated domains with zero Neumann data at the boundary of the holes and prescribed Dirichlet data at the outer boundary. It is known that, if the periodicity of the holes goes to zero but their volume fraction remains fixed and positive, the limit problem is a Dirichlet boundary value problem posed in the domain without the holes, and the effective diffusion coefficients are non-trivially modified; if that volume fraction goes to zero instead, i.e. the holes are dilute, the effective operator remains the Laplacian (that is, unmodified). Our main results contain the study of a "continuity" in those effective models with respect to the volume fraction of the holes and some new convergence rates for homogenization in the dilute setting. Our method explores the classical two-scale expansion ansatz and relies on asymptotic analysis of the rescaled cell problems using layer potential theory.
Convergence Rates for the Stationary and Non-stationary Navier-Stokes Equations over Non-Lipschitz Boundaries

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the higher-order convergence rates for the 2D stationary and non-stationary Navier-Stokes Equations over highly oscillating periodic bumpy John domains with $C^{2}$ regularity in some neighborhood of the boundary point (0,0). For the stationary case and any $\gamma\in (0,1/2)$, using the variational equation satisfied by the solution and the correctors for the bumpy John domains obtained by Higaki, Prange and Zhuge \cite{higaki2021large,MR4619004} after correcting the values on the inflow/outflow boundaries $(\{0\}\cup\{1\})\times(0,1)$, we can obtain an $O(\varepsilon^{2-\gamma})$ approximation in $L^2$ for the velocity and an $O(\varepsilon^{2-\gamma})$ convergence rates in $L^1$ approximated by the so called Navier's wall laws, which generalized the results obtained by Jäger and Mikelić \cite{MR1813101}. Moreover, for the non-stationary case, using the energy method, we can obtain an $O(\varepsilon^{2-\gamma}+\exp(-Ct))$ convergence rate for the velocity in $L_x^1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a polynomial convergence rate for homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi equations with quasi-periodic potentials. We establish a connection between the convergence rate of homogenization and the regularity of the effective Hamiltonian, by using a new quantitative ergodic estimate for bounded quasi-periodic functions with Diophantine frequencies. As an application, we also study the convergent rate for Birkhoff average of unbounded quasi-periodic functions.

Abstract:Proving homogenization has been a subtle issue for geometric equations due to the discontinuity when the gradient vanishes. A sufficient condition for periodic homogenization using perturbed correctors is suggested in the literature Caffarelli and Monneau (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 212:503–574, 2014) to overcome this difficulty. However, some noncoercive equations do not satisfy this condition. In this note, we prove homogenization of geometric equations without using perturbed correctors, and therefore we conclude homogenization for the noncoercive equations. Also, we provide a rate of periodic homogenization of coercive geometric equations by utilizing the fact that they remain coercive under perturbation. We also present an example that homogenizes with a rate slower than .

Abstract:The introduced notion of locally-periodic two-scale convergence allows to average a wider range of microstructures, compared to the periodic one. The compactness theorem for the locally-periodic two-scale convergence and the characterisation of the limit for a sequence bounded in $H^1(\Omega)$ are proven. The underlying analysis comprises the approximation of functions, which periodicity with respect to the fast variable depends on the slow variable, by locally-periodic functions, periodic in subdomains smaller than the considered domain, but larger than the size of microscopic structures. The developed theory is applied to derive macroscopic equations for a linear elasticity problem defined in domains with plywood structures.

Asymptotic convergence for a class of fully nonlinear inverse curvature flows in a cone

Abstract:For a given smooth convex cone in the Euclidean $(n+1)$-space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which is centered at the origin, we investigate the evolution of strictly mean convex hypersurfaces, which are star-shaped with respect to the center of the cone and which meet the cone perpendicularly, along an inverse curvature flow with the speed equal to $\left(f(r)H\right)^{-1}$, where $f$ is a positive function of the radial distance parameter $r$ and $H$ is the mean curvature of the evolving hypersurfaces. The evolution of those hypersurfaces inside the cone yields a fully nonlinear parabolic Neumann problem. Under suitable constraints on the first and the second derivatives of the radial function $f$, we can prove the long-time existence of this flow, and moreover the evolving hypersurfaces converge smoothly to a piece of the round sphere.

Sigma-convergence for thin heterogeneous domains and application to the upscaling of Darcy-Lapwood-Brinkmann flow

Abstract:The sigma-convergence concept has been up to now used to derive macroscopic models in full space dimensions. In this work, we generalize it to thin heterogeneous domains given rise to phenomena in lower space dimensions. More precisely, we provide a new approach of the sigma-convergence method that is suitable for the study of phenomena occurring in thin heterogeneous media. This is made through a systematic study of the sigma-convergence method for thin heterogeneous domains. Assuming that the thin heterogeneous layer is made of microstructures that are distributed inside in a deterministic way including as special cases the periodic and the almost periodic distributions, we make use of the concept of algebras with mean value to state and prove the main compactness results. As an illustration, we upscale a Darcy-Lapwood-Brinkmann micro-model for thin flow. We prove that, according to the magnitude of the permeability of the porous domain, we obtain as effective models, the Darcy law in lower dimensions. The effective models are derived through the solvability of either the local Darcy-Brinkmann problems or the local Hele-Shaw problems.
