Abstract:We study the critical behavior at the ordinary surface universality class of the three-dimensional O($N$) model, bounded by a two-dimensional surface. Using high-precision Monte Carlo simulations of an improved lattice model, where the leading bulk scaling correction is suppressed, and finite-size scaling analysis of the fourth cumulant of the surface magnetization, we obtain precise estimates of the scaling dimension of the surface field operator for $N=2,3,4$. We also determine the fixed-point values of two renormalization-group invariant observables, which characterize the finite-size scaling behavior at the ordinary transition.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the study of the critical behavior of the three - dimensional O(N) model in the ordinary surface universality class. Specifically, through high - precision Monte Carlo simulations and finite - size scaling analysis, the author aims to accurately estimate the scaling dimension \(\Delta\hat{\phi}\) of the surface - field operator for the cases of \(N = 2, 3, 4\). In addition, the paper also determines the fixed - point values of two renormalization - group invariants, which characterize the finite - size scaling behavior in the ordinary phase transition. ### Background and Problems of the Paper 1. **Critical Phenomena under Boundary or Defect Conditions**: In recent years, the study of critical phenomena under boundary or defect conditions has regained attention. In particular, some unexpected boundary exponents have been discovered in quantum spin models, which has inspired a great deal of research interest. 2. **Surface Universality Class of the Three - Dimensional O(N) Model**: For a three - dimensional O(N) model restricted by a two - dimensional surface, the ordinary surface universality class always exists. In this case, the surface interaction is not enhanced, and there is only one relevant surface operator, namely the order parameter, whose two - point function decays rapidly, making the surface susceptibility finite. 3. **Deficiencies in Existing Research**: Previous research has some small deviations in certain cases, especially when \(N = 2, 3\), there are differences between Monte Carlo (MC) results and truncated conformal bootstrap (TCB) results. For \(N = 4\), there are only a small number of MC studies. ### Research Methods 1. **Improved Lattice Model**: The author uses an "improved" lattice model in which the main volume - scaling corrections are suppressed, thereby improving the accuracy of numerical simulations. 2. **Monte Carlo Simulation**: The model is sampled through high - statistics Monte Carlo simulations, combined with the Metropolis, over - relaxation and Wolff single - cluster update algorithms. 3. **Finite - Size Scaling Analysis**: The scaling dimension \(\Delta\hat{\phi}\) of the surface - field operator is estimated by performing a finite - size scaling analysis on the fourth - order cumulant \(\chi_4^s\) of the surface field. ### Main Results 1. **Accurate Estimation of the Scaling Dimension**: For \(N = 2, 3, 4\), the author provides accurate numerical estimates of the scaling dimension \(\Delta\hat{\phi}\) of the surface - field operator. 2. **Fixed - Point Values of Renormalization - Group Invariants**: The fixed - point values of two renormalization - group invariants are determined, which are helpful for further numerical improvement and theoretical verification. ### Conclusion This research provides a benchmark for future research, especially for the application of the conformal bootstrap method. Through the improved model and accurate numerical methods, the author's results are more reliable than previous estimates and provide new insights into understanding the critical behavior of the three - dimensional O(N) model in the ordinary surface universality class.
