Abstract:In the era of the Web of Things, the Metaverse is expected to be the landing site for the next generation of the Internet, resulting in the increased popularity of related technologies and applications in recent years and gradually becoming the focus of Internet research. The Metaverse, as a link between the real and virtual worlds, can provide users with immersive experiences. As the concept of the Metaverse grows in popularity, many scholars and developers begin to focus on the Metaverse's ethics and core. This paper argues that the Metaverse should be centered on humans. That is, humans constitute the majority of the Metaverse. As a result, we begin this paper by introducing the Metaverse's origins, characteristics, related technologies, and the concept of the human-centric Metaverse (HCM). Second, we discuss the manifestation of human-centric in the Metaverse. Finally, we discuss some current issues in the construction of HCM. In this paper, we provide a detailed review of the applications of human-centric technologies in the Metaverse, as well as the relevant HCM application scenarios. We hope that this paper can provide researchers and developers with some directions and ideas for human-centric Metaverse construction.
Human-Computer Interaction
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the concept, importance, and implementation of the Human-Centric Metaverse (HCM). The paper first introduces the basic concepts, characteristics, and related technologies of the Metaverse, including immersion, spatiotemporal characteristics, sustainability, and closed economic systems. The author emphasizes six key technologies required to build the Metaverse: blockchain, human-computer interaction, video games, artificial intelligence (AI), network and computing technologies, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Subsequently, the paper proposes the concept of the "Human-Centric Metaverse" and discusses its necessity. The author believes that the Metaverse should be human-centered because its primary service targets are human users; its development should focus on improving human quality of life. The Metaverse needs to consider not only the user experience but also its operating mechanisms and human rights protection issues within it. The paper further defines four key aspects of HCM: 1. **Human Aspect**: HCM is owned by users or humans, not companies; it advocates for human will and interests, not just the interests of promoters or companies. 2. **Technological Aspect**: HCM is an organic combination of different human-centered technologies aimed at providing rich sensory experiences, low-latency networks, and real social life experiences. 3. **Application Aspect**: HCM is an application model that focuses on the real world, supplementing the real world through virtual reality, enabling people to achieve various experiences in the virtual world that are impossible in reality. 4. **Ethical Aspect**: HCM combines interdisciplinary approaches, effective development practices, and other means to ensure fairness, privacy protection, ethical norms, and human decision-making rights during the development process. Finally, the paper discusses the key technologies required to achieve HCM, including sensory feedback technology, faster and better user experience technologies (such as 5G/6G communication technologies, cloud computing, and edge computing), and social interaction technologies among users. The paper also points out the shortcomings of existing technologies, such as VR/AR technologies currently only providing audiovisual simulation. In the future, brain-computer interface technology needs to be introduced to achieve tactile and taste simulation, aiming for comprehensive sensory simulation.
