Abstract:The non-Hermitian skin effect is a distinctive phenomenon in non-Hermitian systems, which manifests as the anomalous localization of bulk states at the boundary. To understand the physical origin of the non-Hermitian skin effect, a bulk band characterization based on the dynamical degeneracy on an equal frequency contour is proposed, which reflects the strong anisotropy of the spectral function. In this paper, we report the experimental observation of both phenomena in a two-dimensional acoustic crystal, and reveal their remarkable correspondence by performing single-frequency excitation measurements. Our work not only provides a controllable experimental platform for studying the non-Hermitian physics, but also confirms the correspondence between the non-Hermitian skin effect and the dynamical degeneracy splitting, paving a new way to characterize the non-Hermitian skin effect.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the non - Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) in non - Hermitian systems and its relationship with the dynamical degeneracy splitting (DDS). Specifically, the paper aims to experimentally observe the geometry - dependent skin effect (GDSE) in two - dimensional acoustic crystals and explore its correspondence with DDS. This helps to understand the physical origin of boundary states in non - Hermitian systems and provides a new method to characterize the non - Hermitian skin effect. ### Background of the Paper In quantum physics, the Hamiltonian of a system is usually Hermitian to ensure probability conservation. However, when the system interacts with the external environment, the Hamiltonian may become non - Hermitian. Non - Hermitian physical phenomena have been widely studied in the past two decades, especially in the fields of condensed - matter physics, photonics, and phononics. Non - Hermitian systems have some unique properties, such as complex energy levels, non - orthogonal eigenstates, exceptional points (EPs), non - Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), etc. ### Non - Hermitian Skin Effect (NHSE) The non - Hermitian skin effect refers to the fact that in a non - Hermitian system, all eigenstates are localized on the boundary of the system. This effect is more complex in two - dimensional systems and can be divided into different modes, such as corner modes, edge modes, and hybrid modes. The number of these modes is related to the geometry of the system. ### Dynamical Degeneracy Splitting (DDS) Dynamical degeneracy splitting means that on the equal - frequency contour (EFC), the lifetimes of different momentum points are different. This phenomenon can be used to predict the existence or non - existence of the non - Hermitian skin effect at a specific frequency and explain which boundaries or corners will form skin modes. ### Research Methods 1. **Theoretical Model**: A tight - binding model containing four sites was designed, where the sites have tuned onsite electric potentials and non - Hermitian properties. 2. **Experimental Verification**: The model was mapped into an acoustic lattice, and the existence of the non - Hermitian skin effect was verified through local acoustic measurements. 3. **Spectral Function Analysis**: By measuring the acoustic pressure distribution and Fourier - transforming it into momentum space, the spectral function \( A(E, \mathbf{k}) \) was obtained to observe the DDS phenomenon on the EFC. ### Main Findings - **Experimental Observation**: The non - Hermitian skin edge mode was observed in the triangular geometry, but not in the square geometry. - **Correspondence between DDS and NHSE**: By measuring the field distributions at different frequencies, a significant correspondence between the existence of DDS and the non - Hermitian skin effect was confirmed. - **Physical Mechanism**: The scattering behavior of wave packets on different boundaries was explained, revealing the physical mechanism of the non - Hermitian skin effect. ### Conclusion Through experimental and theoretical analysis, the paper successfully demonstrated the correspondence between dynamical degeneracy splitting and the non - Hermitian skin effect in non - Hermitian systems, providing a new perspective for understanding and characterizing the non - Hermitian skin effect. This research not only deepens the understanding of non - Hermitian physics but also provides an experimental basis for future research on non - Hermitian systems in higher dimensions.
