Abstract:In this paper we prove that Sweller has a strategy so that the Sweller-Start Competition-Independence game lasts at least $(5n+3)/13$ moves for every tree. Moreover, we show that there exist arbitrarily large trees such that the Sweller-Start Competition-Independence game lasts at most $(5n+26)/12$ moves, disproving a conjecture by Henning.

Abstract:In this paper we consider positional games where the winning sets are tree universal graphs. Specifically, we show that in the unbiased Maker-Breaker game on the complete graph $K_n$, Maker has a strategy to occupy a graph which contains copies of all spanning trees with maximum degree at most $cn/\log(n)$, for a suitable constant $c$ and $n$ being large enough. We also prove an analogous result for Waiter-Client games. Both of our results show that the building player can play at least as good as suggested by the random graph intuition. Moreover, they improve on a special case of earlier results by Johannsen, Krivelevich, and Samotij as well as Han and Yang for Maker-Breaker games.

Computer analysis of Sprouts with nimbers

Abstract:Sprouts is a two-player topological game, invented in 1967 in the University of Cambridge by John Conway and Michael Paterson. The game starts with p spots, and ends in at most 3p-1 moves. The first player who cannot play loses. The complexity of the p-spot game is very high, so that the best hand-checked proof only shows who the winner is for the 7-spot game, and the best previous computer analysis reached p=11. We have written a computer program, using mainly two new ideas. The nimber (also known as Sprague-Grundy number) allows us to compute separately independent subgames; and when the exploration of a part of the game tree seems to be too difficult, we can manually force the program to search elsewhere. Thanks to these improvements, we reached up to p=32. The outcome of the 33-spot game is still unknown, but the biggest computed value is the 47-spot game ! All the computed values support the Sprouts conjecture: the first player has a winning strategy if and only if p is 3, 4 or 5 modulo 6. We have also used a check algorithm to reduce the number of positions needed to prove which player is the winner. It is now possible to hand-check all the games until p=11 in a reasonable amount of time.

Abstract:The domination game is played on a graph G. Vertices are chosen, one at a time, by two players Dominator and Staller. Each chosen vertex must enlarge the set of vertices of G dominated to that point in the game. Both players use an optimal strategy---Dominator plays so as to end the game as quickly as possible while Staller plays in such a way that the game lasts as many steps as possible. The game domination number of G is the number of vertices chosen when Dominator starts the game and the Staller-start game domination number of G when Staller starts the game. In this paper these two games are studied when played on trees and spanning subgraphs. A lower bound for the game domination number of a tree in terms of the order and maximum degree is proved and shown to be asymptotically tight. It is shown that for every k, there is a tree T with game domination number k and Staller-start game domination number k+1, and it is conjectured that there is no tree with game domination number k and Staller-start game domination number k-1. A relation between the game domination number of a graph and its spanning subgraphs is considered. It is proved that for any positive integer n, there exists a graph G and its spanning tree T such that the game domination number of G is at least n more than the game domination number of T. Moreover, there exist 3-connected graphs G having a spanning subgraph such that the game domination number of the spanning subgraph is arbitrarily smaller than that of G.

Trees with many leaves in tournaments

Abstract:Sumner's universal tournament conjecture states that every $(2n-2)$-vertex tournament should contain a copy of every $n$-vertex oriented tree. If we know the number of leaves of an oriented tree, or its maximum degree, can we guarantee a copy of the tree with fewer vertices in the tournament? Due to work initiated by Häggkvist and Thomason (for number of leaves) and Kühn, Mycroft and Osthus (for maximum degree), it is known that improvements can be made over Sumner's conjecture in some cases, and indeed sometimes an $(n+o(n))$-vertex tournament may be sufficient. In this paper, we give new results on these problems. Specifically, we show i) for every $\alpha>0$, there exists $n_0\in\mathbb{N}$ such that, whenever $n\geqslant n_0$, every $((1+\alpha)n+k)$-vertex tournament contains a copy of every $n$-vertex oriented tree with $k$ leaves, and ii) for every $\alpha>0$, there exists $c>0$ and $n_0\in\mathbb{N}$ such that, whenever $n\geqslant n_0$, every $(1+\alpha)n$-vertex tournament contains a copy of every $n$-vertex oriented tree with maximum degree $\Delta(T)\leqslant cn$. Our first result gives an asymptotic form of a conjecture by Havet and Thomassé, while the second improves a result of Mycroft and Naia which applies to trees with polylogarithmic maximum degree.

Analysis of misere Sprouts game with reduced canonical trees

Abstract:Sprouts is a two-player topological game, invented in 1967 by Michael Paterson and John Conway. The game starts with p spots, lasts at most 3p-1 moves, and the player who makes the last move wins. In the misere version of Sprouts, on the contrary, the player who makes the last move loses. Sprouts is a very intricate game, and the first computer analysis in 1991 reached only p=11. New results were made possible in 2007 up to p=32 by using combinatorial game theory: when a position is a sum of independant games, it is possible to replace some of these games by a natural number, called the nimber, without changing the winning or losing outcome of the complete position. However, this reduction does not apply to the misere version, making the analysis of Sprouts (and more generally of any game) more difficult in the misere version. In 1991, only p=9 was reached in misere Sprouts, and we describe in this paper how we obtained up to p=17. First, we describe a theoretical tool, the reduced canonical tree, which plays a role similar to the nimber in the normal version. Then, we describe the way we have implemented it in our program, and detail the results it allowed us to obtain on misere Sprouts.

Abstract:We study Nash equilibria in the network creation game of Fabrikant et al.[10]. In this game a vertex can buy an edge to another vertex for a cost of $\alpha$, and the objective of each vertex is to minimize the sum of the costs of the edges it purchases plus the sum of the distances to every other vertex in the resultant network. A long-standing conjecture states that if $\alpha\ge n$ then every Nash equilibrium in the game is a spanning tree. We prove the conjecture holds for any $\alpha>3n-3$.

Creating spanning trees in Waiter-Client games

Abstract:For a positive integer $n$ and a tree $T_n$ on $n$ vertices, we consider an unbiased Waiter-Client game $\textrm{WC}(n,T_n)$ played on the complete graph~$K_n$, in which Waiter's goal is to force Client to build a copy of $T_n$. We prove that for every constant $c<1/3$, if $\Delta(T_n)\le cn$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, then Waiter has a winning strategy in $\textrm{WC}(n,T_n)$. On the other hand, we show that there exist a positive constant $c'<1/2$ and a family of trees $T_{n}$ with $\Delta(T_n)\le c'n$ such that Client has a winning strategy in the $\textrm{WC}(n,T_n)$ game for every $n$ sufficiently large. We also consider the corresponding problem in the Client-Waiter version of the game.

Abstract:We consider two-player games over graphs and give tight bounds on the memory size of strategies ensuring safety objectives. More specifically, we show that the minimal number of memory states of a strategy ensuring a safety objective is given by the size of the maximal antichain of left quotients with respect to language inclusion. This result holds for all safety objectives without any regularity assumptions. We give several applications of this general principle. In particular, we characterize the exact memory requirements for the opponent in generalized reachability games, and we prove the existence of positional strategies in games with counters.

A theoretical expansion of the Sprout game

Abstract:Sprout is a two-player pen and paper game which starts with $n$ vertices, and the players take turns to join two pre-existing dots by a subdivided edge while keeping the graph sub-cubic planar at all times. The first player not being able to move loses. A major conjecture claims that Player 1 has a winning strategy if and only if $n \equiv 3,4,5$ ($\bmod~6$). The conjecture is verified until $44$, and a few isolated values of $n$, usually with the help of a computer. However, to the best of our understanding, not too much progress could be made towards finding a theoretical proof of the conjecture till now. In this article, we try to take a bottom-up approach and start building a theory around the problem. We start by expanding a related game called Brussels Sprout (where dots are replaced by crosses) introduced by Conway, possibly to help the understanding of Sprout. In particular, we introduce and study a generalized version of Brussels Sprout where crosses are replaced by a dot having an arbitrary number of ``partial edges'' (say, general cross) coming out, and planar graphs are replaced by any (pre-decided) hereditary class of graphs. We study the game for forests, graphs on surfaces, and sparse planar graphs. We also do a nimber characterization of the game when the hereditary class is taken to be triangle-free planar graphs, and we have started the game with two arbitrary generalized crosses. Moreover, while studying this particular case, we naturally stumble upon a circular version of the same game and solve a difficult nimber characterization using the method of structural induction. The above mentioned proof may potentially be one approach to solving the Sprout conjecture.

Abstract:In the Maker-Breaker domination game played on a graph $G$, Dominator's goal is to select a dominating set and Staller's goal is to claim a closed neighborhood of some vertex. We study the cases when Staller can win the game. If Dominator (resp., Staller) starts the game, then $\gamma_{\rm SMB}(G)$ (resp., $\gamma_{\rm SMB}'(G)$) denotes the minimum number of moves Staller needs to win. For every positive integer $k$, trees $T$ with $\gamma_{\rm SMB}'(T)=k$ are characterized and a general upper bound on $\gamma_{\rm SMB}'$ is proved. Let $S = S(n_1,\dots, n_\ell)$ be the subdivided star obtained from the star with $\ell$ edges by subdividing its edges $n_1-1, \ldots, n_\ell-1$ times, respectively. Then $\gamma_{\rm SMB}'(S)$ is determined in all the cases except when $\ell\ge 4$ and each $n_i$ is even. The simplest formula is obtained when there are at least two odd $n_i$s. If $n_1$ and $n_2$ are the two smallest such numbers, then $\gamma_{\rm SMB}'(S(n_1,\dots, n_\ell))=\lceil \log_2(n_1+n_2+1)\rceil$. For caterpillars, exact formulas for $\gamma_{\rm SMB}$ and for $\gamma_{\rm SMB}'$ are established.

Beyond Value Iteration for Parity Games: Strategy Iteration with Universal Trees

Abstract:Parity games have witnessed several new quasi-polynomial algorithms since the breakthrough result of Calude et al. (STOC 2017). The combinatorial object underlying these approaches is a universal tree, as identified by Czerwiński et al. (SODA 2019). By proving a quasi-polynomial lower bound on the size of a universal tree, they have highlighted a barrier that must be overcome by all existing approaches to attain polynomial running time. This is due to the existence of worst case instances which force these algorithms to explore a large portion of the tree. As an attempt to overcome this barrier, we propose a strategy iteration framework which can be applied on any universal tree. It is at least as fast as its value iteration counterparts, while allowing one to take bigger leaps in the universal tree. Our main technical contribution is an efficient method for computing the least fixed point of 1-player games. This is achieved via a careful adaptation of shortest path algorithms to the setting of ordered trees. By plugging in the universal tree of Jurdziński and Lazić (LICS 2017), or the Strahler universal tree of Daviaud et al. (ICALP 2020), we obtain instantiations of the general framework that take time $O(mn^2\log n\log d)$ and $O(mn^2\log^3 n \log d)$ respectively per iteration.

Finding Safe Strategies for Competitive Diffusion on Trees

Abstract:We study the two-player safe game of Competitive Diffusion, a game-theoretic model for the diffusion of technologies or influence through a social network. In game theory, safe strategies are mixed strategies with a minimum expected gain against unknown strategies of the opponents. Safe strategies for competitive diffusion lead to maximum spread of influence in the presence of uncertainty about the other players. We study the safe game on two specific classes of trees, spiders and complete trees, and give tight bounds on the minimum expected gain. We then use these results to give an algorithm that suggests a safe strategy for a player on any tree. We test this algorithm on randomly generated trees and show that it finds strategies that are close to optimal.

Abstract:Consider a rooted Galton-Watson tree $T$, to each of whose edges we assign, independently, a weight that equals $+1$ with probability $p_{1}$, $0$ with probability $p_{0}$ and $-1$ with probability $p_{-1}=1-p_{1}-p_{0}$. We play a game on this rooted, edge-weighted Galton-Watson tree, involving two players and a token. The token is allowed to be moved from where it is currently located, say a vertex $u$ of $T$, to any child $v$ of $u$. The players begin with initial capitals that amount to $i$ and $j$ units respectively, and a player wins if either she is the first to amass a capital worth $\kappa$ units, where $\kappa$ is a pre-specified positive integer, or her opponent is the first to have her capital dwindle to $0$, or she is able to move the token to a leaf vertex, from where her opponent cannot move it any farther. This paper is concerned with studying the probabilities of the three possible outcomes (i.e. win for the first player, loss for the first player, and draw for both players) of this game, as well as finding conditions under which the expected duration of this game is finite. The theory we develop in this paper for the analysis of this game is further supported by observations obtained via computer simulations, and these observations provide a deeper insight into how the above-mentioned probabilities behave as the underlying parameters and / or offspring distributions are allowed to vary. We conclude the paper with a couple of conjectures, one of which suggests the occurrence of a phase transition phenomenon whereby the probability of draw in this game goes from being $0$ to being strictly positive as the parameter-pair $(p_{0},p_{1})$ is varied suitably while keeping the underlying offspring distribution of $T$ fixed.

Abstract:In the famous network creation game of Fabrikant et al. a set of agents play a game to build a connected graph. The $n$ agents form the vertex set $V$ of the graph and each vertex $v\in V$ buys a set $E_v$ of edges inducing a graph $G=(V,\bigcup\limits_{v\in V} E_v)$. The private objective of each vertex is to minimize the sum of its building cost (the cost of the edges it buys) plus its connection cost (the total distance from itself to every other vertex). Given a cost of $\alpha$ for each individual edge, a long-standing conjecture, called the tree conjecture, states that if $\alpha > n$ then every Nash equilibrium graph in the game is a spanning tree. After a plethora of work, it is known that the conjecture holds for any $\alpha>3n-3$. In this paper we prove the tree conjecture holds for $\alpha>2n$. This reduces by half the open range for $\alpha$ with only $[n, 2n)$ remaining in order to settle the conjecture.

Maker-Breaker on Galton-Watson trees

Abstract:We consider the following combinatorial two-player game: On the random tree arising from a branching process, each round one player (Breaker) deletes an edge and by that removes the descendant and all its progeny, while the other (Maker) fixates an edge to permanently secure it from deletion. Breaker has won once the tree's root is contained in a finite component, otherwise Maker wins by building an infinite path starting at the root. It will be analyzed both as a positional game (the tree is known to both players at the start) and with more restrictive levels of information (the players essentially explore the tree during the game). Reading the number of available edges for play as a random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ allows us to derive the winning probability of Breaker via fixed point equations in three natural information regimes. These results provide new insights into combinatorial game theory and random structures, with potential applications to network theory, algorithmic game design and probability theory.

Abstract:Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe is a variant of the well known tic-tac-toe (noughts and crosses) board game. Two players compete to win three aligned "fields", each of them being a tic-tac-toe game. Each move determines which field the next player must play in. We show that there exist a winning strategy for the first player, and therefore that there exist an optimal winning strategy taking at most 43 moves; that the second player can hold on at least 29 rounds; and identify any optimal strategy's first two moves.

Complexity of Maker-Breaker Games on Edge Sets of Graphs

Abstract:We initiate the study of the algorithmic complexity of Maker-Breaker games played on the edge sets of general graphs. We mainly consider the perfect matching game and the $H$-game. Maker wins if she claims the edges of a perfect matching in the first, and a copy of a fixed graph $H$ in the second. We prove that deciding who wins the perfect matching game and the $H$-game is PSPACE-complete, even for the latter in small-diameter graphs if $H$ is a tree. Toward finding the smallest graph $H$ for which the $H$-game is PSPACE-complete, we also prove that such an $H$ of order 51 and size 57 exists. We then give several positive results for the $H$-game. As the $H$-game is already PSPACE-complete when $H$ is a tree, we mainly consider the case where $H$ belongs to a subclass of trees. In particular, we design two linear-time algorithms, both based on structural characterizations, to decide the winners of the $P_4$-game in general graphs and the $K_{1,\ell}$-game in trees. Then, we prove that the $K_{1,\ell}$-game in any graph, and the $H$-game in trees are both FPT parameterized by the length of the game, notably adding to the short list of games with this property, which is of independent interest. Another natural direction to take is to consider the $H$-game when $H$ is a cycle. While we were unable to resolve this case, we prove that the related arboricity-$k$ game is polynomial-time solvable. In particular, when $k=2$, Maker wins this game if she claims the edges of any cycle.

Abstract:The domination game is played on a graph G by two players, Dominator and Staller, who alternate in selecting vertices until each vertex in the graph G is contained in the closed neighbourhood of the set of selected vertices. Dominator's aim is to reach this state in as few moves as possible, whereas Staller wants the game to last as long as possible. In this paper, we prove that if G has n vertices and minimum degree at least 2, then Dominator has a strategy to finish the domination game on G within 10n/17+1/17 moves, thus making progress towards a conjecture by Bujtás, Iršič and Klavžar.

Team Correlated Equilibria in Zero-Sum Extensive-Form Games via Tree Decompositions

Abstract:Despite the many recent practical and theoretical breakthroughs in computational game theory, equilibrium finding in extensive-form team games remains a significant challenge. While NP-hard in the worst case, there are provably efficient algorithms for certain families of team game. In particular, if the game has common external information, also known as A-loss recall -- informally, actions played by non-team members (i.e., the opposing team or nature) are either unknown to the entire team, or common knowledge within the team -- then polynomial-time algorithms exist (Kaneko & Kline 1995). In this paper, we devise a completely new algorithm for solving team games. It uses a tree decomposition of the constraint system representing each team's strategy to reduce the number and degree of constraints required for correctness (tightness of the mathematical program). Our approach has the bags of the tree decomposition correspond to team-public states. Our algorithm reduces the problem of solving team games to a linear program with at most $O(NW^{w+1})$ nonzero entries in the constraint matrix, where $N$ is the size of the game tree, $w$ is a parameter that depends on the amount of uncommon external information, and $W$ is the treewidth of the tree decomposition. In public-action games, our program size is bounded by the tighter $2^{O(nt)}N$ for teams of $n$ players with $t$ types each. Our algorithm is based on a new way to write a custom, concise tree decomposition, and its fast run time does not assume that the decomposition has small treewidth. Since our algorithm describes the polytope of correlated strategies directly, we get equilibrium finding in correlated strategies for free -- instead of, say, having to run a double oracle algorithm. We show via experiments on a standard suite of games that our algorithm achieves state-of-the-art performance on all benchmark game classes except one.
