Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to revisit the proof of the Gearhardt–Prüss–Huang–Greiner theorem for a semigroup S ( t ), following the general idea of the proofs that we have seen in the literature and to get an explicit estimate on the operator norm of S ( t ) in terms of bounds on the resolvent of the generator. In Helffer and Sjöstrand (From resolvent bounds to semigroup bounds. ArXiv:1001.4171v1, math. FA, 2010) by the first two authors, this was done and some applications in semiclassical analysis were given. Some of these results have been subsequently published in three books written by the two first authors Helffer (Spectral theory and its applications. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2013) and Sjöstrand (Lecture notes : Spectral properties of non-self-adjoint operators. Journées équations aux dérivées partielles (2009), article no. 1), (Non self-adjoint differential operators, spectral asymptotics and random perturbations. Pseudo-differential Operators and Applications, Birkhäuser (2018)). A second work Helffer and Sjöstrand (Integral Equ Oper Theory 93(3), 2021) presents new improvements partially motivated by a paper of Wei (Sci China Math 64:507–518, 2021). In this third paper, we continue the discussion on whether the aforementioned results are optimal, and whether one can improve these results through iteration. Numerical computations will illustrate some of the abstract results.

Stability criteria for positive semigroups on ordered Banach spaces

Abstract:We consider generators of positive $C_0$-semigroups and, more generally, resolvent positive operators $A$ on ordered Banach spaces and seek for conditions ensuring the negativity of their spectral bound $s(A)$. Our main result characterizes $s(A) < 0$ in terms of so-called \emph{small-gain conditions} that describe the behaviour of $Ax$ for positive vectors $x$. This is new even in case that the underlying space is an $L^p$-space or a space of continuous functions. We also demonstrate that it becomes considerably easier to characterize the property $s(A) < 0$ if the cone of the underlying Banach space has non-empty interior or if the essential spectral bound of $A$ is negative. To treat the latter case, we discuss a counterpart of a Krein-Rutman theorem for resolvent positive operators. When $A$ is the generator of a positive $C_0$-semigroup, our results can be interpreted as stability results for the semigroup, and as such, they complement similar results recently proved for the discrete-time case. In the same vein, we prove a Collatz--Wielandt type formula and a logarithmic formula for the spectral bound of generators of positive semigroups.

Abstract:In this paper, some remarks on the paper (Ciepliński in Bull Malays Math Sci Soc 46:62, 2023) are provided. The main results of the manuscript enhance those presented by Ciepliński. We establish the Hyers–Ulam stability and hyperstability under various conditions, addressing open problems posed by Ciepliński. Our results, provide broader and more general results compared to previous findings.

Abstract:We consider a -semigroup on a Banach space such that the resolvent is uniformly bounded on the right half-plane. In this paper we provide a condition on the resolvent which is sufficient and necessary for the uniform exponential stability of such a semigroup. As a consequence, we give an alternative proof of Gearhart's theorem (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 236 , 385–394 (1978)). The approach lies on a complex inversion formula and tempered distributions.

Abstract:Using the error bound results established in the present paper for approximate solutions, we study the stability issues when perturbed by possibly nonaffine smooth maps E for the abstract inequality system F >=(K) 0 defined by a (possible nonclosed) convex cone K and a Frechet differentiable function F satisfying the (extended) weak gamma-condition. We provide some sufficient conditions, in terms of the information at a solution x(0), for ensuring the lower semicontinuity and/or the Lipschitz-like continuity at x(0) of the solution mapping for the perturbed system F + E >=(K) 0 with smooth perturbation E. Explicit upper bounds of the Lipschitz-like moduli are also provided.

Abstract:We give a relation between the exponential stability of $ C_{0}- $semigroup $ \textbf{T}=\left\lbrace T(t) \right\rbrace_{t\geq 0} $ and the solutions of Lyapunov inequality $ \left\langle QAx,x\right\langle +\left\langle Qx,Ax\right\langle \leq -||x||^{2}, $ in $ B^{+}(X,X^{*}) $, with $ X $ is a Banach space. The solutions of this inequality characterizes, the boundedness of the resolvent $ R(\lambda,A) $ inside and outside of the left half-plane $ \Re\lambda\geq 0 $, and also the left invertibility of the $ C_{0}- $semigroup T.

Abstract:We revisit the theory of one-parameter semigroups of linear operators on Banach spaces in order to prove quantitative bounds for bounded holomorphic semigroups. Subsequently, relying on these bounds we obtain new quantitative versions of two recent results of Xu related to the vector-valued Littlewood–Paley–Stein theory for symmetric diffusion semigroups.

Abstract:The Heisenberg product is an associative product defined on symmetric functions which interpolates between the usual product and the Kronecker product. In 1938, Murnaghan discovered that the Kronecker product of two Schur functions stabilizes. We prove an analogous result for the Heisenberg product of Schur functions.

Asymptotic Cohomology and Uniform Stability for Lattices in Semisimple Groups

Abstract:It is, by now, classical that lattices in higher rank semisimple groups have various rigidity properties. In this work, we add another such rigidity property to the list: uniform stability with respect to the family of unitary operators on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces equipped with submultiplicative norms. Namely, we show that for (most) high-rank lattices, every finite-dimensional unitary "almost-representation" of $\Gamma$ is a small deformation of a (true) unitary representation. This extends a result of Kazhdan (1983) for amenable groups and of Burger-Ozawa-Thom (2013) for SL(n,Z) (for n>2). Towards this goal, we first build an elaborate cohomological theory capturing the obstruction to such stability, and show that the vanishing of second cohomology implies uniform stability in this setting. This cohomology can be roughly thought of as an asymptotic version of bounded cohomology, and sheds light on a question raised in Monod (2006) about a possible connection between vanishing of second bounded cohomology and Ulam stability.

B-Fredholm theory in Banach algebras

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a systematic B-Fredholm theory in semiprime Banach algebras. We first generalize Smyth's important punctured neighbourhood theorem to B-Fredholm elements. Then using this result, we investigate the local spectral theory of B-Fredholm elements, including the localized left (resp. right) SVEP and a classification of components of B-Fredholm resolvent set. Finally, in semisimple Banach algebra context, we characterize element $f$ such that $f^{n}$ belongs to the socle for some $n \in \mathbb{N}$ from two different perspectives: one is the invariance of the B-Fredholm spectrum under commuting perturbation $f$, the other is the Rieszness and the B-Fredholmness of $f$.

Abstract:The reconstruction theorem and the multilevel Schauder estimate have central roles in the analytic theory of regularity structures [17]. Inspired by [26], we provide elementary proofs for them by using the semigroup of operators. Essentially, we use only the semigroup property and the upper estimates of kernels. Moreover, we refine the several types of Besov reconstruction theorems [18, 7] and introduce the new framework "regularity-integrability structures". The analytic theorems in this paper are applied to the study of quasilinear SPDEs [5] and an inductive proof of the convergence of random models [4].

Abstract:We study rates of decay for $C_0$-semigroups on Banach spaces under the assumption that the norm of the resolvent of the semigroup generator grows with $\vert s\vert^{\beta}\log(\vert s\vert)^b$, $\beta, b \geq 0$, as $\vert s\vert\rightarrow\infty$, and with $\vert s\vert^{-\alpha}\log(1/\vert s\vert)^a$, $\alpha, a \geq 0$, as $\vert s\vert \rightarrow 0$. Our results do not suppose that the semigroup is bounded. In particular, for $a=b=0$, our results improve the rates involving Fourier types obtained by Rozendaal and Veraar (J. Funct. Anal. 275(10): 2845-2894, 2018).

Abstract:We are concerned with the problem of determining the nonlinear term in a semilinear elliptic equation by boundary measurements. Precisely, we improve [5, Theorem 1.3], where a logarithmic type stability estimate was proved. We show actually that we have Hölder stability estimate with less boundary measurents and less regular nonlinearities. We establish our stability inequality by following the same method as in [4]. This method consists in constructing special solutions vanishing at a subboundary of the domain.

Abstract:This is an expository-survey on weak stability of bounded linear operators acting on normed spaces in general and, in particular, on Hilbert spaces. The paper gives a comprehensive account of the problem of weak operator stability, containing a few new results and some unanswered questions. It also gives an updated review of the literature on the weak stability of operators over the past sixty years, including present-day research trends. It is verified that the majority of the weak stability literature is concentrated on Hilbert-space operators. We discuss why this preference occurs and also why the weak stability of unitary operators is central to the Hilbert-space stability problem.

Abstract:In his monograph on Infinite Abelian Groups, I. Kaplansky raised three ``test problems" concerning their structure and multiplicity. As noted by Azoff, these problems make sense for any category admitting a direct sum operation. Here, we are interested in the operator theoretic version of Kaplansky's second problem which asks: if $A$ and $B$ are operators on an infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space and $A \oplus A$ is equivalent to $B \oplus B$ in some (precise) sense, is $A$ equivalent to $B$? We examine this problem under a strengthening of the hypothesis, where a ``primitive" square root $J_2(A)$ of $A\oplus A$ is assumed to be equivalent to the corresponding square root $J_2(B)$ of $B \oplus B$. When ``equivalence" refers to similarity of operators and $A$ is a compact operator, we deduce from this stronger hypothesis that $A$ and $B$ are similar. We exhibit a counterexample (due to J. Bell) of this phenomenon in the setting of unital rings. Also, we exhibit an uncountable family $\{ U_\alpha\}_{\alpha \in \Omega}$ of unitary operators, no two of which are unitarily equivalent, such that each $U_\alpha$ is unitarily equivalent to $J_n(U_\alpha)$, a ``primitive" $n^{th}$ root of $U_\alpha \oplus U_\alpha \oplus \cdots \oplus U_\alpha$.

Abstract:The stability space of a module is the cone of vectors which make the module semistable. These cones are defined in terms of inequalities; in this paper we draw insights from considering the dual description in terms of non-negative linear spans. We show how stability spaces of thin modules are related to order polytopes. In the case of non-thin modules, we show how the stability spaces of string and band modules are related to the stability spaces of the thin modules corresponding to the abstract string and band. We use this to analyse the way in which the stability space of a band module is the limit of stability spaces of string modules. Namely, the stability space of the band module is a union of cones, each of which is the limit of the stability spaces of a family of string modules.
