Abstract:We consider Markovian open quantum dynamics (MOQD). We show that, up to small-probability tails, the supports of quantum states evolving under such dynamics propagate with finite speed in any finite-energy subspace. More precisely, we prove that if the initial quantum state is localized in space, then any finite-energy part of the solution of the von Neumann-Lindblad equation is approximately localized inside an energy-dependent light cone. We also obtain an explicit upper bound for the slope of this light cone.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in an open quantum system, when the Hamiltonian is the standard Schrödinger operator \(H = -\Delta + V(x)\), prove the existence of an energy - dependent light cone, that is, the maximum speed at which an initially localized quantum state propagates within the finite - energy subspace is bounded.
Specifically, the paper considers Markovian Open Quantum Dynamics (MOQD) and proves that if the initial quantum state is spatially localized, then the finite - energy part of the solution to the von Neumann - Lindblad equation is approximately localized within the energy - dependent light cone. In addition, the paper also gives an explicit upper bound for the slope of this light cone.
### Background and Motivation
- **Non - relativistic quantum theory**: Although non - relativistic quantum theory does not have a strict light - cone structure, in many cases, its dynamics still exhibits a maximum - speed boundary, except for a small - probability leakage.
- **Existing research**: The existence of light cones has been strictly derived in standard quantum mechanics, non - relativistic quantum electrodynamics models, nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and quantum spin systems. Lieb and Robinson first derived the existence of light cones in quantum spin systems, and this result developed into a very active research area in the early 21st century.
- **Open quantum systems**: Previous research on the maximum - speed boundary of MOQD either focused on lattice systems or excluded the case where the Hamiltonian is the standard Schrödinger operator. This paper solves this problem and proves that quantum - mechanical particles coupled to the environment cannot accelerate any finite - energy part.
### Main Results
- **Existence of light cone**: For any energy \(E\), there exists a constant \(\kappa=\kappa(E)>0\) such that for any initial condition \(\rho_0\) localized in \(X\subset\mathbb{R}^d\), and for any \(c > \kappa\), the probability that the system is located within \(H_E\cap X_{c}^c\) in the state \(\rho_t\) is arbitrarily small as \(t\rightarrow\infty\).
- **Energy - dependent speed**: The slope \(\kappa\) of the light cone can be estimated as \(\kappa\leq C(1 + |E|)^{1/2}\), where \(C\) is a fixed constant.
### Mathematical Framework
- **Von Neumann - Lindblad equation**:
\[
\frac{\partial\rho_t}{\partial t}=-i[H,\rho_t]+\frac{1}{2}\sum_{j\geq1}\left([W_j,\rho_tW_j^{\ast}]+[W_j\rho_t,W_j^{\ast}]\right)
\]
where \(\rho_t\) is the density operator, \(H\) is the quantum Hamiltonian, and \(\{W_j\}\) are bounded operators generated by environmental interactions.
- **Main assumptions**:
- **(H)**: The potential function \(V(x)\) satisfies certain decay conditions.
- **(W1)**: \(\{W_j\}\) are bounded operators, and the series \(\sum_{j\geq1}W_j^{\ast}W_j\) converges strongly in the bounded operator space \(B(H)\).
- **(W2)**: Micro - localization techniques involving non - commutative operators \(H\) and \(x_j\).
### Conclusion
By introducing the concept of an energy - dependent light cone, the paper proves that in an open quantum system, the propagation speed of an initially localized quantum state within the finite - energy subspace is bounded. This result not only extends the existing light - cone theory but also provides a new perspective for understanding the non - equilibrium properties of open quantum systems.
