Abstract:The Basel problem consists in finding the sum of the reciprocals of the squares of the positive integers. It was finally solved in 1735 by Leonhard Euler. In this paper, we propose a simple proof based on the Weierstrass Sine product formula and L'Hôpital's rule.

Abstract:Euler's solution in 1734 of the Basel problem, which asks for a closed form expression for the sum of the reciprocals of all perfect squares, is one of the most celebrated results of mathematical analysis. In the modern era, numerous proofs of it have been produced, each emphasizing a different style of calculation, as a way of testing the power of some demonstration method. It's often thought that solutions using calculus need to involve advanced contour integration techniques or geometric coordinate transformations. We show that this is not the case, as the result can be derived by analyzing basic properties of a particular one-dimensional integral, and as such, can be obtained with techniques typical of regular calculus tests and math competitions.

Abstract:Many interesting solutions of the so-called Basler problem of evaluating the Riemann zeta function ζ( s ) when s = 2, which was of vital importance to Euler and the Bernoulli brothers (Jakob and Johann Bernoulli), have appeared in the mathematical literature ever since Euler first solved this problem in the year 1736. The main object of the present paper is to investigate rather systematically several interesting evaluations and representations of ζ( s ) when s ∈ ℕ¼ {1}. In one of many computationally useful special cases considered here, it is observed that ζ(3) can be represented by means of a series which converges much more rapidly than that in Euler's celebrated formula as well as the series used recently by Apery in his proof of the irrationality of ζ(3). Symbolic and numerical computations using Mathematica (Version 4.0) for Linux show, among other things, that only 50 terms of this series are capable of producing an accuracy of seven decimal places.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present series expansions for even powers of the number $\pi$. This is accomplished by generalizing Euler's method for solving the Basel Problem, which was published in 1735. We employ elementary symmetric polynomials, transform them into nested sums, and thereby derive nice series formulas for even powers of the number $\pi$ such as \[ \frac{\pi^2}{3!}= \sum_{\ell_1=1}^\infty\frac{1}{\ell_1^2} \;;\quad\quad \frac{\pi^4}{5!} = \sum_{\ell_2=2}^\infty \sum_{\ell_1=1}^{\ell_2-1} \frac{1}{\ell_1^2\cdot\ell_2^2} \;;\quad\quad \frac{\pi^6}{7!}= \sum_{\ell_3=3}^\infty \sum_{\ell_2=2}^{\ell_3-1} \sum_{\ell_1=1}^{\ell_2-1}\frac{1}{\ell_1^2\cdot\ell_2^2\cdot\ell_3^2} \;;\quad\cdots \] Many of these formulas do not seem to be widely known.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:Ever since the time of Euler, the so-called Euler sums have been evaluated in many different ways. We give here a (presumably) new proof of the classical Euler sum. We show that several interesting analogues of the Euler sums can be evaluated by systematically analyzing some known summation formulas involving hypergeometric series. Many other identities related to the Euler sums are also presented.

Abstract:In this note I give simple proofs of classical results of Euler, Legendre and Sylvester showing that for certain integers M there are no (or only a few) solutions of $x^3 + y^3 = M$, with $x$ and $y$ in $\mathbb{Q}$. The proofs all use a single argument -- infinite 3-descent in the ring $\mathcal{O} = \mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ of Eisenstein integers. (Everything needed about $\mathcal{O}$ is developed from scratch.) The reader only needs the briefest acquaintance with complex numbers, fields and congruence modulo an element of a commutative ring. In particular I never say anything about ideals or elliptic curves (though I do mention cubic reciprocity in passing), and a clever high-school student might well enjoy the note. A few new results with $M$ in $\mathcal{O}$ and $x$ and $y$ in $\mathbb{Q}[\omega]$ are also derived.

Abstract:Translated from the Latin original "Novae demonstrationes circa resolutionem numerorum in quadrata" (1774). E445 in the Enestrom index. See Chapter III, section XI of Weil's "Number theory: an approach through history". Also, a very clear proof of the four squares theorem based on Euler's is Theorem 370 in Hardy and Wright, "An introduction to the theory of numbers", fifth ed. It uses Theorem 87 in Hardy and Wright, but otherwise does not assume anything else from their book. I translated most of the paper and checked those details a few months ago, but only finished last few parts now. If anything isn't clear please email me.

Abstract:In this presentation dedicated to the tricentennial birth anniversary of the great eighteenth-century Swiss mathematician, Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), we begin by remarking about the so-called Basler problem of evaluating the Zeta function zeta (s) [in the much later notation of Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866)] when s = 2, which was then of vital importance to Euler and to many other contemporary mathematicians including especially the Bernoulli brothers [Jakob Bernoulli (1654-1705) and Johann Bernoulli (1667-1748)], and for which a fascinatingly large number of seemingly independent solutions have appeared in the mathematical literature ever since Euler first solved this problem in the year 1736. We then investigate various recent developments on the evaluations and representations of zeta(s) when s is an element of N\{1}, N being the set of natural numbers. We emphasize upon several interesting classes of rapidly convergent series representations for zeta (2n + 1) (n is an element of N) which have been developed in recent years. In two of many computationally useful special cases considered here, it is observed that zeta(3) can be represented by means of series which converge much more rapidly than that in Euler's celebrated formula as well as the series used recently by Roger Apery (1916-1994) in his proof of the irrationality of zeta(3). Symbolic and numerical computations using Mathematica (Version 4.0) for Linux show, among other things, that only 50 terms of one of these series are capable of producing an accuracy of seven decimal places.

Abstract:The conjecture of Lehmer is proved to be true. The proof mainly relies upon: (i) the properties of the Parry Upper functions $f_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ associated with the dynamical zeta functions $\zeta_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ of the Rényi--Parry arithmetical dynamical systems, for $\alpha$ an algebraic integer $\alpha$ of house "$house(\alpha)$" greater than 1, (ii) the discovery of lenticuli of poles of $\zeta_{house(\alpha)}(z)$ which uniformly equidistribute at the limit on a limit "lenticular" arc of the unit circle, when $house(\alpha)$ tends to $1^+$, giving rise to a continuous lenticular minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(house(\alpha))$ of the Mahler measure ${\rm M}(\alpha)$, (iii) the Poincaré asymptotic expansions of these poles and of this minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(house(\alpha))$ as a function of the dynamical degree. With the same arguments the conjecture of Schinzel-Zassenhaus is proved to be true. An inequality improving those of Dobrowolski and Voutier ones is obtained. The set of Salem numbers is shown to be bounded from below by the Perron number $\theta_{31}^{-1} = 1.08545\ldots$, dominant root of the trinomial $-1 - z^{30} + z^{31}$. Whether Lehmer's number is the smallest Salem number remains open. A lower bound for the Weil height of nonzero totally real algebraic numbers, $\neq \pm 1$, is obtained (Bogomolov property). For sequences of algebraic integers of Mahler measure smaller than the smallest Pisot number, whose houses have a dynamical degree tending to infinity, the Galois orbit measures of conjugates are proved to converge towards the Haar measure on $|z|=1$ (limit equidistribution).

Abstract:In 1874 Brill and Noether designed a seminal geometric method for computing bases of Riemann-Roch spaces. From then, their method has led to several algorithms, some of them being implemented in computer algebra systems. The usual proofs often rely on abstract concepts of algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. In this paper we present a short self-contained and elementary proof that mostly needs Newton polygons, Hensel lifting, bivariate resultants, and Chinese remaindering.

Abstract:We study the equation (x‚ąí4r)3+(x‚ąí3r)3+(x‚ąí2r)3+(x‚ąír)3+x3+(x+r)3+(x+2r)3+(x+3r)3+(x+4r)3=yp , which is a natural continuation of previous works carried out by A. Arg√°ez-Garc√≠a and the fourth author (perfect powers that are sums of cubes of a three, five and seven term arithmetic progression). Under the assumptions 0 , p‚Č•5 a prime and gcd(x,r)=1 , we show that solutions must satisfy xy=0 . Moreover, we study the equation for prime exponents 2 and 3 in greater detail. Under the assumptions r>0 a positive integer and gcd(x,r)=1 we show that there are infinitely many solutions for p=2 and p=3 via explicit constructions using integral points on elliptic curves. We use an amalgamation of methods in computational and algebraic number theory to overcome the increased computational challenge. Most notable is a significant computational efficiency obtained through appealing to Bilu, Hanrot and Voutier's Primitive Divisor Theorem and the method of Chabauty, as well as employing a Thue equation solver earlier on.

Abstract:The problem of finding the sum of a polynomial's values is considered. In particular, for any $n\geq 3$, the explicit formula for the sum of the $n$th powers of natural numbers $S_n=\sum_{x=1}^{m}x^{n}$ is proved: $$\sum_{x=1}^{m}x^{n}=(-1)^{n}m(m+1)(-\frac{1}{2}+\sum_{i=2}^{n}a_i(m+2)(m+3)...(m+i)),$$ here $a_i=\frac{1}{i+1}\sum_{k=1}^{i}\frac{(-1)^{k}k^{n}}{k!(i-k)!}$, $(i=2,3,...,n-1)$, $a_n=\frac{(-1)^n}{n+1}$. Note that this formula does not contain Bernoulli numbers.

Abstract:This paper proposes an elementary solution to a special case of finding all perfect squares that can be written as sum of consecutive integer cubes. It is shown that there are no non-trivial solutions if the perfect square is a prime power, i.e., it is divisible by two different primes if a non-trivial one exists. Solution mostly depends on $v_{p}(x)$ and general forms of Pythagorean triples.

Abstract:This paper is purely expositional. The statement of the Abel-Ruffini theorem on unsolvability of equations using radicals is simple and well-known. We sketch an elementary proof of this theorem. We do not use the terms 'field extension', 'Galois group' and even 'group'. However, our presentation is a good way to learn (or recall) starting idea of the Galois theory. Our exposition follows `Mathematical Omnibus' of S. Tabachnikov and D.B. Fuchs (in English, http://www.math.psu.edu/tabachni/Books/taba.pdf). The main difference is that we show how the proof could have been invented. The paper is accessible for students familiar with complex numbers, and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians. The material is presented as a sequence of problems, which is peculiar not only to Zen monasteries but also to advanced mathematical education; most problems are presented with hints or solutions.
An improved bound on sums of square roots via the subspace theorem

Abstract:The sum of square roots is as follows: Given $x_1,\dots,x_n \in \mathbb{Z}$ and $a_1,\dots,a_n \in \mathbb{N}$ decide whether $ E=\sum_{i=1}^n x_i \sqrt{a_i} \geq 0$. It is a prominent open problem (Problem 33 of the Open Problems Project), whether this can be decided in polynomial time. The state-of-the-art methods rely on separation bounds, which are lower bounds on the minimum nonzero absolute value of $E$. The current best bound shows that $|E| \geq \left(n \cdot \max_i (|x_i| \cdot \sqrt{a_i})\right)^{-2^n} $, which is doubly exponentially small. We provide a new bound of the form $|E| \geq \gamma \cdot (n \cdot \max_i|x_i|)^{-2n}$ where $\gamma $ is a constant depending on $a_1,\dots,a_n$. This is singly exponential in $n$ for fixed $a_1,\dots,a_n$. The constant $\gamma$ is not explicit and stems from the subspace theorem, a deep result in the geometry of numbers.
