Abstract:We give combinatorial proofs of several recent results due to Merca on the sum of different parts congruent to $r$ modulo $m$ in all partitions of $n$. The proofs make use of some well known involutions from the literature and some new involutions introduced here.

Abstract:Andrews and Merca [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 203 (2024), Art. 105849] recently obtained two interesting results on the sum of the parts with the same parity in the partitions of $n$ (the modulo $2$ case), the proof of which relies on generating functions. Motivated by Andrews and Merca's results, we define six statistics related to the partitions of $n$ and show that the two triples of the six statistics are equidistributed. From this equidistributed result, we derive modulo $m$ extensions of Andrews and Merca's results for all integers $m\ge 2$. The proof of the main result is based on a general bijection on the set of partitions of $n$.

Abstract:In a recent article on overpartitions, Merca considered the auxiliary function $a(n)$ which counts the number of partitions of $n$ where odd parts are repeated at most twice (and there are no restrictions on the even parts). In the course of his work, Merca proved the following: For all $n\geq 0$, \begin{align*} a(4n+2) &\equiv 0 \pmod{2}, \textrm{\ \ and} \\ a(4n+3) &\equiv 0 \pmod{2}. \end{align*} Merca then indicates that a classical proof of these congruences would be very interesting. The goal of this short note is to fulfill Merca's request by providing two truly elementary (classical) proofs of these congruences.

Abstract:Recently, Andrews and El Bachraoui (2024) proved three very interesting $q$-series identities, from which three simple looking identities involving certain restricted partitions into distinct even parts and $4$-regular partitions follow. In this short note, we give combinatorial proofs of these identities. We also prove the counterpart identities for the restricted partitions into distinct odd parts.

Abstract:In 2012, Andrews and Merca proved a truncated theorem on Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Their work has opened up a new study of truncated series. Recently, Ballantine and Merca posed a conjecture on infinite families of inequalities involving b6(n) , which counts the number of 6-regular partitions of n . In this paper, we confirm Ballantine and Merca's conjecture on linear equalities of b6(n) based on a formula of the number of partitions of n into parts not exceeding 3 due to Cayley.

Abstract:Buryak, Feigin and Nakajima computed a generating function for a family of partition statistics by using the geometry of the $Z/cZ$ fixed point sets in the Hilbert scheme of points on $C^2$. Loehr and Warrington had already shown how a similar observation by Haiman using the geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points on $C^2$ could be made purely combinatorial. We extend the techniques of Loehr and Warrington to also account for cores and quotients. In particular, we construct a multigraph $M_{r,s,c}$ that is a direct refinement of Loehr and Warrington's multigraphs $M_{r,s}$, retains the relevant partition data, and is preserved by an involution $I_{r,s,c}$ which we use to prove the equidistribution of a family of partition statistics. As a consequence, we obtain a purely combinatorial proof of a result of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima. More precisely, we define a family of partition statistics $\{h_{x,c}^+, x\in [0,\infty)\}$ and give a combinatorial proof that for all $x$ and all positive integers $c$, \begin{equation*} \sum q^{|\lambda|}t^{h_{x,c}^+(\lambda)}=q^{|\mu|}\prod_{i\geq 1}\frac{1}{(1-q^{ic})^{c-1}}\prod_{j\geq 1}\frac{1}{1-q^{jc}t}, \end{equation*} where the sum ranges over all partitions $\lambda$ with $c$-core $\mu$. Section 2 recalls background on partitions, cores and quotients and is written with those new to the subject in mind.

Abstract:We consider the number of various partitions of $n$ with parts separated by parity and prove combinatorially several inequalities between these numbers. For example, we show that for $n\geq 5$ we have $p_{od}^{eu}(n)<p_{ed}^{ou}(n)$, where $p_{od}^{eu}(n)$ is the number of partitions of $n$ with odd parts distinct and even parts unrestricted and all odd parts less than all even parts and $p_{ed}^{ou}(n)$ is the number of partitions of $n$ with even parts distinct and odd parts unrestricted and all even parts less than all odd parts. We also prove a conjectural inequality of Fu and Tang involving partitions with parts separated by parity with restrictions on the multiplicity of parts.

A note on odd partition numbers

Abstract:Ramanujan's celebrated partition congruences modulo $\ell\in \{5, 7, 11\}$ assert that $$ p(\ell n+\delta_{\ell})\equiv 0\pmod{\ell}, $$ where $0<\delta_{\ell}<\ell$ satisfies $24\delta_{\ell}\equiv 1\pmod{\ell}.$ By proving Subbarao's Conjecture, Radu showed that there are no such congruences when it comes to parity. There are infinitely many odd (resp. even) partition numbers in every arithmetic progression. For primes $\ell \geq 5,$ we give a new proof of the conclusion that there are infinitely many $m$ for which $p(\ell m+\delta_{\ell})$ is odd. This proof uses a generalization, due to the second author and Ramsey, of a result of Mazur in his classic paper on the Eisenstein ideal. We also refine a classical criterion of Sturm for modular form congruences, which allows us to show that the smallest such $m$ satisfies $m<(\ell^2-1)/24,$ representing a significant improvement to the previous bound.

Abstract:abstract: We generalize the theory of linked partition ideals due to Andrews using finite automata in formal language theory and apply it to prove three Rogers--Ramanujan type identities for modulus 14 that were posed by Nandi through a vertex operator theoretic construction of the level 4 standard modules of the affine Lie algebra $A^{(2)}_{2}$.

Elementary Proofs of Congruences for POND and PEND Partitions

Abstract:Recently, Ballantine and Welch considered various generalizations and refinements of POD and PED partitions. These are integer partitions wherein the odd parts must be distinct (in the case of POD partitions) or the even parts must be distinct (in the case of PED partitions). In the process, they were led to consider two classes of integer partitions which are, in some sense, the ``opposite'' of POD and PED partitions. They labeled these POND and PEND partitions, which are integer partitions wherein the odd parts cannot be distinct (in the case of POND partitions) or the even parts cannot be distinct (in the case of PEND partitions). In this work, we study these two types of partitions from an arithmetic perspective. Along the way, we are led to prove the following two infinite families of Ramanujan--like congruences: For all $\alpha \geq 1$ and all $n\geq 0,$ \begin{align*} pond\left(3^{2\alpha +1}n+\frac{23\cdot 3^{2\alpha}+1}{8}\right) &\equiv 0 \pmod{3}, \textrm{\ \ \ and} \\ pend\left(3^{2\alpha +1}n+\frac{17\cdot 3^{2\alpha}-1}{8}\right) &\equiv 0 \pmod{3} \end{align*} where $pond(n)$ counts the number of POND partitions of weight $n$ and $pend(n)$ counts the number of PEND partitions of weight $n$. All of the proof techniques used herein are elementary, relying on classical $q$-series identities and generating function manipulations, along with mathematical induction.

A combinatorial proof of a partition perimeter inequality

Abstract:The partition perimeter is a statistic defined to be one less than the sum of the number of parts and the largest part. Recently, Amdeberhan, Andrews, and Ballantine proved the following analog of Glaisher's theorem: for all $m \geq 2$ and $n \geq 1$, there are at least as many partitions with perimeter $n$ and parts $\not \equiv 0 \pmod{m}$ as partitions with perimeter $n$ and parts repeating fewer than $m$ times. In this work, we provide a combinatorial proof of their theorem by relating the combinatorics of the partition perimeter to that of compositions. Using this technique, we also show that a composition theorem of Huang implies a refinement of another perimeter theorem of Fu and Tang.

Abstract:In 2021, Andrews mentioned that George Beck introduced partition statistics $M_w(r,m,n)$, which denote the total number of ones in the partition of $n$ with crank congruent to $r$ modulo $m$. Recently, a number of congruences and identities involving $M_w(r,m,n)$ for some small $m$ have been developed. We establish the 11-dissection of the generating functions for $M_{\omega}(r,11,n)-M_{\omega}(11-r,11,n)$, where $r=1,2,3,4,5$. In particular, we discover a beautiful identity involving $M_{\omega}(r,11,11n+6)$.

Abstract:A proof of several identities of Ramanujan involving theta functions of level $7$ is given which uses a specific modular function for $\Gamma_1(7)$ and Klein's projective representation of $PSL(2,7)$ into $PSL(3, \mathbb{C})$. Four identities of Berndt and Zhang are derived as algebraic corollaries of the main proof.

Congruence properties modulo prime powers for a class of partition functions

Abstract:Let $p$ be prime, and let $p_{[1,p]}$ denote the function whose generating function is $\prod (1-q^n)^{-1}(1 - q^{pn})^{-1}$. This function and its generalizations $p_{[c^{\ell}, d^m]}$ are the subject of study in several recent papers. Let $\ell \geq 5$, and let $j\geq 1$ and let $p \in \{2, 3, 5 \}$. In this paper, we prove that the generating function for $p_{[1, p]}(n)$ in the progression $\beta_{p, \ell, j}$ modulo $\ell^j$ with $24\beta_{p, \ell, j} \equiv p + 1\pmod{\ell^j}$ lies in a Hecke-invariant subspace of type $\{\eta(Dz)\eta(Dpz)F(Dz) : F(z) \in M_{s}(\Gamma_0(p), \chi)\}$ for suitable $D\geq 1$, $s\geq 0$, and character $\chi$. When $p\in \{2, 3, 5\}$, we use the Hecke-invariance of these subspaces to prove, for distinct primes $\ell$ and $m\geq 5$ and $j\geq 1$, congruences of the form \[ p_{[1, p]}\left(\frac{\ell^jm^k n + 1}{D}\right)\equiv 0\pmod{\ell^j} \] for all $n\geq 1$ with $m\nmid n$, where $k$ is an explicitly computable constant depending on the modular forms in the invariant subspace. Our proofs requires adapting and extending analogous results on $p(n)$ in [1] and [19].

Abstract: Let $b_k(n)$ denote the $k-$regular partitons of a natural number $n$. In this paper, we study the behavior of $b_k(n)$ modulo composite integers $M$ which are coprime to $6$.
