Abstract:We exhibit a new approach to the proofs of the existence of a large family of almost isometric ideals in nonseparable Banach spaces and existence of a large family of almost isometric local retracts in metric spaces. Our approach also implies the existence of a large family of nontrivial projections on every dual of a nonseparable Banach space. We prove three possible formulations of our results are equivalent. Some applications are mentioned which witness the usefulness of our novel approach.

Abstract:This paper gives a survey over some of the most important methods and results of nonlinear functional analysis in ordered Banach spaces. By means of iterative techniques and by using topological tools, fixed point theorems for completely continuous maps in ordered Banach spaces are deduced, and particular attention is paid to the derivation of multiplicity results. Moreover, solvability and bifurcation problems for fixed point equations depending nonlinearly on a real parameter are investigated. In order to demonstrate the importance of the abstract results, there are given some nontrivial applications to nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. But, of course, the abstract techniques and results of this paper apply also to a variety of other problems which are not considered here. This paper presents in a unified manner most of the recent work in this field. In addition, by making consequent use of the fixed point index for compact maps, short and simple proofs are obtained for most of the classical results contained in M. A. Krasnoselskiis book [11].

Abstract:Motivated by new examples of functional Banach spaces over the unit disk, arising as the symbol spaces in the study of random analytic functions, for which the monomials exhibit features of an unconditional basis yet they often don't even form a Schauder basis, we introduce a notion called solid basis for Banach spaces and p-Banach spaces and study its properties. Besides justifying the rich existence of solid bases, we study their relationship with unconditional bases, the weak-star convergence of Taylor polynomials, the problem of a solid span and the curious roles played by c 0 . The two features of this work are as follows: (1) during the process, we are led to revisit the axioms satisfied by a typical Banach space of analytic functions over the unit disk, leading to a notion of (and ), as well as a number of related functorial constructions, which are of independent interests; (2) the main interests of solid basis lie in the case of non-separable (p-)Banach spaces, such as BMOA and the Bloch space instead of VMOA and the little Bloch space.

Abstract:A set of all symmetric Banach function spaces defined on [0,1] is equipped with the partial order by the relation of continuous inclusion. Properties of symmetric spaces, which do not depend of their position in the ordered structure, are studied. With the help of the J. Peetre's interpolation scheme it is shown that for any pair of symmetric spaces E, F such that F is absolutely continuously included in E there exists an intermediate (so called, Peetre's) space K(E,F;W), where W is a space with an unconditional basis, that is reflexive or, respectively, weakly sequentially complete provided W also is reflexive or, respectively, weakly sequentially complete.

Abstract:This paper treats linear algebra over a semiring pair, in a wide range of applications to tropical algebra and related areas such as hyperrings and fuzzy rings. First we present a more general category of ``pairs'' with their morphisms, called ``weak morphisms,'' paying special attention to supertropical pairs, hyperpairs, and the doubling functor. Then we turn to matrices and the question of whether the row rank, column rank, and submatrix rank of a matrix are equal. Often the submatrix rank is less than or equal to the row rank and the column rank, but there is a counterexample to equality, discovered some time ago by the second author, which we provide in a more general setting (``pairs of the second kind'') that includes the hyperfield of signs. Additional positive results include a version of Cramer's rule, and we find situations when equality holds, encompassing results by Akian, Gaubert, Guterman, Izhakian, Knebusch, and Rowen. We pay special attention to the question of whether $n+1$ vectors of length $n$ need be dependent. At the end, we introduce a category with stronger morphisms, that preserve a surpassing relation.

Abstract:In a previous paper, the second author introduced a compact topology τr on the space of closed ideals of a unital Banach algebra A. If A is separable, then τr is either metrizable or else neither Hausdorff nor first countable. Here it is shown that τr is Hausdorff if A is C1[0, 1], but that if A is a uniform algebra, then τr is Hausdorff if and only if A has spectral synthesis. An example is given of a strongly regular, uniform algebra for which every maximal ideal has a bounded approximate identity, but which does not have spectral synthesis. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification 46H10.

Abstract:Extending the theory of systems, we introduce a theory of Lie semialgebra ``pairs'' which parallels the classical theory of Lie algebras, but with a ``null set'' replacing $0$. A selection of examples is given. These Lie pairs comprise two categories in addition to the universal algebraic definition, one with ``weak Lie morphisms'' preserving null sums, and the other with ``$\preceq$-morphisms'' preserving a surpassing relation $\preceq$ that replaces equality. We provide versions of the PBW (Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt) Theorem in these three categories.

Abstract:We extend the definition of the bivariant $K$-theory $kk^{ban}$ from plain Banach algebras to Banach algebras equipped with an action of a locally compact Hausdorff group $G$. We also define a natural transformation from Lafforgue's theory $KK^{ban}_G$ into the new equivariant theory, overcoming some technical difficulties that are particular to the equivariant case. The categorical framework allows us to systematically define a descent homomorphism and to prove a Green-Julg theorem, a dual version of it and a generalised version that involves the action of a proper $G$-space. We also include a naïve Poncaré duality theorem.

Abstract:Sequences of bivariate orthogonal polynomials written as vector polynomials of increasing size satisfy a couple of three term relations with matrix coefficients. In this work, introducing a time-dependent parameter, we analyse a Lax-type pair system for the coefficients of the three term relations. We also deduce several characterizations relating the Lax-type pair, the shape of the weight, Stieltjes function, moments, a differential equation for the weight, and the bidimensional Toda-type systems.

Bibasic sequences in Banach lattices

Abstract:Given a Schauder basic sequence $(x_k)$ in a Banach lattice, we say that $(x_k)$ is bibasic if the expansion of every vector in $[x_k]$ converges not only in norm, but also in order. We prove that, in this definition, order convergence may be replaced with uniform convergence, with order boundedness of the partial sums, or with norm boundedness of finite suprema of the partial sums. The results in this paper extend and unify those from the pioneering paper "Order Schauder bases in Banach lattices" by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://A.Gumenchuk" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> et al. In particular, we are able to characterize bibasic sequences in terms of the bibasis inequality, a result they obtained under certain additional assumptions. We then embark on a deeper study of their properties. We show that they are independent of ambient space, stable under small perturbations, and preserved under sequentially uniformly continuous norm isomorphic embeddings. We consider several special kinds of bibasic sequences, including permutable sequences, i.e., sequences for which every permutation is bibasic, and absolute sequences, i.e., sequences where expansions remain convergent after we replace every term with its modulus. We provide several equivalent characterizations of absolute sequences, showing how they relate to bibases and to further modifications of the basis inequality. We further consider bibasic sequences with unique order expansions. We show that this property does generally depend on ambient space, but not for the inclusion of $c_0$ into $\ell_\infty$. We also show that small perturbations of bibases with unique order expansions have unique order expansions, but this is not true if "bibases" is replaced with "bibasic sequences". Finally, we consider uo-bibasic sequences, which are obtained by replacing order convergence with uo-convergence in the definition of a bibasic sequence. We show that such sequences are very common.

Abstract:We introduce an abstract framework to study certain classes of stably embedded pairs of models of a complete $\mathcal{L}$-theory $T$, called \textit{beautiful pairs}, which comprises Poizat's belles paires of stable structures and van den Dries-Lewenberg's tame pairs of o-minimal structures. Using an amalgamation construction, we relate several properties of beautiful pairs with classical Fraïssé properties. After characterizing beautiful pairs of various theories of ordered abelian groups and valued fields, including the theories of algebraically, $p$-adically and real closed valued fields, we show an Ax-Kochen-Ershov type result for beautiful pairs of henselian valued fields. As an application, we derive strict pro-definability of particular classes of definable types. When $T$ is one of the theories of valued fields mentioned above, the corresponding classes of types are related to classical geometric spaces and our main result specializes to their strict pro-definability. Most notably, we exhibit the strict pro-definability of a natural space of types associated to Huber's analytifications. In this way, we also recover a result of Hrushovski-Loeser on the strict pro-definability of stably dominated types in algebraically closed valued fields, which corresponds to Berkovich's analytifications.

Abstract:We propose a new framework for Conley index theory. The main feature of our approach is that we do not use the notion of index pairs. We introduce, instead, the notions of compactifiable subsets and index neighbourhoods, and formulate and prove basic results in Conley index theory using these notions. We treat both the discrete time case and the continuous time case.

Abstract:This paper surveys Campana's theory of C-pairs (or "geometric orbifolds") in the complex-analytic setting, to serve as a reference for future work. Written with a view towards applications in hyperbolicity, rational points, and entire curves, it introduces the fundamental definitions of C-pair-theory systematically. In particular, it establishes an appropriate notion of "morphism", which agrees with notions from the literature in the smooth case, but is better behaved in the singular setting and has functorial properties that relate it to minimal model theory.

Abstract:We investigate connections between upper/lower estimates for Banach lattices and the notion of relative s-decomposability, which has roots in interpolation theory. To get a characterization of relatively s-decomposable Banach lattices in terms of the above estimates, we assign to each Banach lattice X two sequence spaces XU and XL that are largely determined by the set of p, for which lp is finitely lattice representable in X. As an application, we obtain an orbital factorization of relative K-functional estimates for Banach couples (X0, X1) and (Y0, Y1) through some suitable couples of weighted Lp-spaces provided if Xi, Yi are relatively s-decomposable for i = 0, 1. Also, we undertake a detailed study of the properties of optimal upper and lower sequence spaces XU and XL, and, in particular, prove that these spaces are rearrangement invariant. In the Appendix, a description of the optimal upper sequence space for a separable Orlicz space as a certain intersection of some special Musielak-Orlicz sequence spaces is given

Abstract:The contraction condition in the Banach contraction principle forces a function to be continuous. Many authors overcome this obligation and weaken the hypotheses via metric spaces endowed with a partial order. In this paper, we present some coupled fixed point theorems for the functions having mixed monotone properties on ordered vector metric spaces, which are more general spaces than partially ordered metric spaces. We also define the double monotone property and investigate the previous results with this property. In the last section, we prove the uniqueness of a coupled fixed point for non-monotone functions. In addition, we present some illustrative examples to emphasize that our results are more general than the ones in the literature.

Abstract:We revisit the paper of Alexander Grothendiek where he introduced Grothendieck pairs and discuss the relation between profinite rigidity and left/right Grothendieck rigidity. We also show that various groups are left and/or right Grothendieck rigid and, in particular, all ascending HNN extensiona of finitely generated free groups are right Grothendieck rigid. Along the way we present a number of questions and suggestions for further research.
