Abstract:We study the equivalence of several well-known sufficient optimality conditions for a general quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP). The conditions are classified in two categories. The first one is for determining an optimal solution and the second one is for finding an optimal value. The first category of conditions includes the existence of a saddle point of the Lagrangian function and the existence of a rank-1 optimal solution of the primal SDP relaxation of QCQP. The second category includes $\eta_p = \zeta$, $\eta_d = \zeta$, and $\varphi = \zeta$, where $\zeta$, $\eta_p$, $\eta_d$, and $\varphi$ denote the optimal values of QCQP, the dual SDP relaxation, the primal SDP relaxation and the Lagrangian dual, respectively. We show the equivalence of these conditions with or without the existence of an optimal solution of QCQP and/or the Slater constraint qualification for the primal SDP relaxation. The results on the conditions are also extended to the doubly nonnegative relaxation of equality constrained QCQP in nonnegative variables.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the equivalence study of the global optimality conditions in Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Program (QCQP). Specifically, the author explores the equivalence relationships among several known sufficient global optimality conditions, which can be divided into two major categories: 1. **Conditions for determining the optimal solution**: These conditions are mainly used to judge whether a feasible solution is a global optimal solution. They include: - Existence of saddle points of the Lagrangian function. - Existence of rank - 1 optimal solutions of the original semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation. 2. **Conditions for determining the optimal value**: These conditions are mainly used to judge whether a certain lower bound is the global optimal value. They include: - \( \eta_p=\zeta \), where \( \eta_p \) is the optimal value of the original SDP relaxation. - \( \eta_d = \zeta \), where \( \eta_d \) is the optimal value of the dual SDP relaxation. - \( \phi=\zeta \), where \( \phi \) is the optimal value of the Lagrangian dual. Through strict mathematical derivations, the author shows the equivalence of these conditions under different assumptions, especially when the Slater constraint qualification condition is satisfied or when the QCQP has a minimizing solution, these conditions are equivalent. In addition, the paper also extends these results to the doubly non - negative (DNN) relaxation of the equality - constrained QCQP with non - negative variables. ### Main contributions 1. **Proof of equivalence relationships**: The author has detailedly proven the equivalence relationships among these global optimality conditions, including the equivalence under some mild assumptions. 2. **Analysis of exceptional cases**: Through specific examples, it shows that in some special degenerate cases, these conditions may not be equivalent. 3. **Extension of DNN relaxation**: These conditions are extended to the DNN relaxation of the equality - constrained QCQP with non - negative variables, further strengthening the validity of the conditions. ### Key concepts - **QCQP**: Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming problem. - **Lagrangian function**: A combination of the objective function and constraint conditions used in optimization problems. - **SDP relaxation**: Relaxing a non - convex optimization problem into a semidefinite programming problem to solve for approximate solutions. - **DNN relaxation**: On the basis of SDP relaxation, further considering non - negativity constraints, and usually can provide a tighter lower bound. - **Slater constraint qualification condition**: A common constraint qualification condition used to ensure the establishment of strong duality. ### Conclusion When the QCQP has a finite optimal value and satisfies the Slater constraint qualification condition or has a minimizing solution, these global optimality conditions are equivalent. These results provide a theoretical basis for understanding and solving QCQP problems and are of great significance in practical applications.
