Abstract:We study the behavior of $r$-fold zeta-functions of Euler-Zagier type with identical arguments $\zeta_r(s,s,\ldots,s)$ on the real line. Our basic tool is an "infinite'' version of Newton's classical identities. We carry out numerical computations, and draw graphs of $\zeta_r(s,s,\ldots,s)$ for real $s$, for several small values of $r$. Those graphs suggest various properties of $\zeta_r(s,s,\ldots,s)$, some of which we prove rigorously. When $s \in [0,1]$, we show that $\zeta_r(s,s,\ldots,s)$ has $r$ asymptotes at $\Re s=1/k$ ($1\leq k\leq r$), and determine the asymptotic behavior of $\zeta_r(s,s,\ldots,s)$ close to those asymptotes. Numerical computations establish the existence of several real zeros for $2\leq r\leq 10$ (in which only the case $r=2$ was previously known). Based on those computations, we raise a conjecture on the number of zeros for general $r$, and gives a formula for calculating the number of zeros. We also consider the behavior of $\zeta_r(s,s,\ldots,s)$ outside the interval $[0,1]$. We prove asymptotic formulas for $\zeta_r(-k,-k,\ldots,-k)$, where $k$ takes odd positive integer values and tends to $+\infty$. Moreover, on the number of real zeros of $\zeta_r(s,s,\ldots,s)$, we prove that there are exactly $(r-1)$ real zeros on the interrval $(-2n,-2(n-1))$ for any $n \geq 2$.

Abstract:We present several formulae for the large $t$ asymptotics of the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$, $s=\sigma+i t$, $0\leq \sigma \leq 1$, $t>0$, which are valid to all orders. A particular case of these results coincides with the classical results of Siegel. Using these formulae, we derive explicit representations for the sum $\sum_a^b n^{-s}$ for certain ranges of $a$ and $b$. In addition, we present precise estimates relating this sum with the sum $\sum_c^d n^{s-1}$ for certain ranges of $a, b, c, d$. We also study a two-parameter generalization of the Riemann zeta function which we denote by $\Phi(u,v,\beta)$, $u\in \mathbb{C}$, $v\in \mathbb{C}$, $\beta \in \mathbb{R}$. Generalizing the methodology used in the study of $\zeta(s)$, we derive asymptotic formulae for $\Phi(u,v,\beta)$.

For $k\leq 1/2$, our bounds for the $2k$-th moments are expected to be almost optimal. Assuming a conjecture about the maximum size of the argument of the zeta function on the critical line, we obtain upper bounds for these negative moments of the same strength while summing over a larger subfamily of zeta zeros.

Abstract:Let $m$ be a positive integer, and define $$\zeta_m(s)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\omega(n)}}{n^s} \zeta^*_m(s)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\Omega(n)}}{n^s},$$ for $\Re(s)>1$, where $\omega(n)$ denotes the number of distinct prime factors of $n$, and $\Omega(n)$ represents the total number of prime factors of $n$ (counted with multiplicity). In this paper we study these two zeta functions and related arithmetical functions. We show that $$\sum^\infty_{n=1\atop n \text{is squarefree}}\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\omega(n)}}n=0\quad\text{if} m>4,$$ which is similar to the known identity $\sum_{n=1}^\infty\mu(n)/n=0$ equivalent to the Prime Number Theorem. For $m>4$, we prove that $$\zeta_m(1):=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\omega(n)}}n=0 \text{and} \zeta^*_m(1):=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{(-e^{2\pi i/m})^{\Omega(n)}}n=0.$$ We also raise a hypothesis on the parities of $\Omega(n)-n$ which implies the Riemann Hypothesis.

Abstract:Write $\zeta_m(n)$, $1\le m\le n-1$, for the negative zeros of the $n$-th Bell polynomial, ordered in decreasing size. In this paper, we prove the following asymptotic: for a positive integer $m$ we have $$ \lim_{n\to \infty}\frac{\zeta_m(n)}{-m\left(\displaystyle\frac{m}{m+1}\right)^{n-1}}=1. $$ The approach used to find this asymptotic applies to many other significant families of polynomials. In particular, analogous asymptotics are also proved for the negative rightmost zeros of Eulerian polynomials, $r$-Bell polynomials, linear combinations of $K$ consecutive Bell polynomials and many others.

Abstract:We introduce and study finite analogues of Euler's constant in the same setting as finite multiple zeta values. We define a couple of candidate values from the perspectives of a ``regularized value of $\zeta(1)$'' and of Mascheroni's and Kluyver--Nörlund's series expressions of Euler's constant using Gregory coefficients. Moreover, we reveal that the differences between them always lie in the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space spanned by 1 and values of a finite analogue of logarithm at positive integers.

Abstract:The exceptional group $G_2$ has two maximal parabolic subgroups $P_{long}$, $P_{short}$ corresponding to the so-called long root and short root. In this paper, the second author introduces two zeta functions associated to $(G_2,P_{long})$ and $(G_2,P_{short})$ respectively, and the first author proves that these zetas satisfy the Riemann Hypothesis.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of Laguerre polynomials Ln(αn)(z) as n→∞, where αn/n has a finite positive limit or the limit is +∞. Applying the Deift–Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method for Riemann–Hilbert problems, we derive the uniform asymptotics of such polynomials, which improves on the results of Bosbach and Gawronski (1998). In particular, our theorem is useful to obtain the asymptotics of complex Hermite polynomials and related double integrals.

Abstract:Let $S(t) = \frac{1}{\pi}\Im \log\zeta\left(\frac{1}{2}+it\right)$. We prove an unconditional lower bound on the measure of the sets $\{t\in [T,2T] \colon S(t) \geq V\}$ for $\sqrt{\log\log T} \leq V \ll \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$. For $V \leq (\log T)^{1/3-\varepsilon}$ our bound has a Gaussian shape with variance proportional to $\log\log T$. At the endpoint, $V \asymp \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$, our result implies the best known $\Omega$-theorem for $S(t)$ which is due to Tsang. We also explain how the method breaks down for $V \gg \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/3}$ given our current knowledge about the zeros of the zeta function. Conditionally on the Riemann hypothesis we extend our results to the range $\sqrt{\log\log T} \leq V \ll \left(\frac{\log T}{\log \log T}\right)^{1/2}$.

Abstract:This note gives some applications of the zeta distribution to number theory. First, a number of probabilistic proofs of the equality between the Riemann zeta functions and some number-theoretic functions are provided. Second, some problems of probability with respect to positive integers considered in the literature are discussed in the zeta distribution case. In contrast to usual heuristic arguments of probabilistic approach in number theory where the uniform distribution is assumed on positive integers, the proofs here are rigorous by utilizing the zeta distributions on positive integers.

Abstract:This is an expanded version. We study relations among special values of zeta functions, invariants of toric varieties, and generalized Dedekind sums. In particular, we use invariants arising in the Todd class of a toric variety to give a new explicit formula for the values of the zeta function of a real quadratic field at nonpositive integers. We also express these invariants in terms of the generalized Dedekind sums studied previously by several authors. The paper includes conceptual proofs of the above mentioned relations and explicit computations of the various zeta values and Dedekind sums involved.

Abstract:We give explicit expressions (or at least an algorithm of obtaining such expressions) of the coefficients of the Laurent series expansions of the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-functions at any integer points. The main tools are the Mellin-Barnes integral formula and the harmonic product formulas. The Mellin-Barnes integral formula is used in the induction process on the number of variables, and the harmonic product formula is used to show that the Laurent series expansion outside the domain of convergence can be obtained from that inside the domain of convergence.

Abstract:For any $\sigma$ with $0\leq \sigma\leq 1$ and any $T>10$ sufficiently large, let $N_{\zeta}(\sigma,K,T)$ be the number of zeros $\rho=\beta+i\gamma$ of $\zeta_{K}(s)$ with $|\gamma|\leq T$ and $\beta\geq \sigma$ and the zero being counted according to multiplicity. For $k\geq3,$ we have \[ N_{\zeta}(\sigma,K,T)\ll T^{\frac{2k}{6\sigma-3}(1-\sigma)+\varepsilon}, \] where \[ \frac{2k+3}{2k+6}\leq \sigma<1 \] and the implied constant may depend on the number field $K$ and $\varepsilon.$ This improves previous results for $k\geq3$ of certain range of $\sigma$. Some other related improved results are also given.

Abstract:The Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s):= \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} 1/n^s$ can be interpreted as the energy per point of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}$, interacting pairwisely via the Riesz potential $1/r^s$. Given a parameter $\Delta\in (0,1]$, this physical model is generalized by considering the energy per point $E(s,\Delta)$ of a periodic one-dimensional lattice alternating the distances between the nearest-neighbour particles as $2/(1+\Delta)$ and $2\Delta/(1+\Delta)$, keeping the lattice density equal to one independently of $\Delta$. This energy trivially satisfies $E(s,1)=\zeta(s)$ at $\Delta=1$, it can be easily expressed as a combination of the Riemann and Hurwitz zeta functions, and extended analytically to the punctured $s$-plane $\mathbb{C} \setminus \{ 1\}$. In this paper, we perform numerical investigations of the zeros of the energy $\{ \rho=\rho_x+{\rm i}\rho_y\}$, which are defined by $E(\rho,\Delta)=0$. The numerical results reveal that in the Riemann limit $\Delta\to 1^-$ theses zeros include the anticipated critical zeros of the Riemann zeta function with $\Re(\rho_x)=\frac{1}{2}$ as well as an unexpected -- comparing to the Riemann Hypothesis -- infinite series of off-critical zeros. The analytic treatment of these off-critical zeros shows that their imaginary components are equidistant and their real components diverge logarithmically to $-\infty$ as $\Delta\to 1^-$, i.e., they become invisible at the Riemann's $\Delta=1$.

Abstract:We prove a lower bound on the maximum of the Riemann zeta function in a typical short interval on the critical line. Together with the upper bound from the previous work of the authors, this implies tightness of $$ \max_{|h|\leq 1}|\zeta(\tfrac 12+{\rm i} \tau+{\rm i} h)|\cdot \frac{(\log\log T)^{3/4}}{\log T}, $$ for large $T$, where $\tau$ is uniformly distributed on $[T,2T]$. The techniques are also applied to bound the right tail of the maximum, proving the distributional decay $\asymp y e^{-2y}$ for $y$ positive. This confirms the Fyodorov-Hiary-Keating conjecture, which states that the maximum of $\zeta$ in short intervals lies in the universality class of logarithmically correlated fields.

Abstract:Recently, we have applied the generalized Littlewood theorem concerning contour integrals of the logarithm of the analytical function to find the sums over inverse powers of zeros for the incomplete gamma and Riemann zeta functions, polygamma functions, and elliptical functions. Here, the same theorem is applied to study such sums for the zeros of the Hurwitz zeta function ζ(s,z), including the sum over the inverse first power of its appropriately defined non-trivial zeros. We also study some related properties of the Hurwitz zeta function zeros. In particular, we show that, for any natural N and small real ε, when z tends to n = 0, −1, −2... we can find at least N zeros of ζ(s,z) in the ε neighborhood of 0 for sufficiently small |z+n|, as well as one simple zero tending to 1, etc.
