Abstract:Abstract Thermal radiation is found from a moving point charge along a special, globally defined, continuous accelerated trajectory. The calculation is entirely classical (despite the appearance of ħ) but is shown to have an immediate connection to quantum field theory via the moving mirror model. A precise recipe is given for the functional mathematical identity of the electron-mirror duality that allows one to map between (1) the classical radiation of an ordinary accelerating point charge in 3+1 Minkowski spacetime and (2) the quantum radiation of a moving mirror in 1+1 flat spacetime, for a given rectilinear trajectory.

Abstract:Although non-intuitive, an accelerated electron along a particular trajectory can be shown to emit classical electromagnetic radiation in the form of a Fermi-Dirac spectral distribution when observed in a particular angular regime. We investigate the relationship between the distribution, spectrum, and particle count. The result for the moving point charge is classical, as it accelerates along an exactly known trajectory. We map to the semi-classical regime of the moving mirror model with a quantized spin-0 field. The scalars also possess a $\beta$ Bogoliubov coefficient distribution with Fermi-Dirac form in the respective frequency regime.

Abstract:The relativistic problem of motion of a classical electrical point charge that has been placed between the plates of a charged capacitor and then released from rest is well-posed in Bopp-Landé-Thomas-Podolsky (BLTP) electrodynamics. That theory introduces a single new parameter, Bopp's $\varkappa$, a reciprocal length. The present article concerns the small-$\varkappa$ regime. Radiation-reaction effects on the motion are shown to appear at order $\varkappa^3$. It is found that in the initial phase the motion is accurately accounted for by test particle theory, with the inertia determined by the bare mass of the particle. Subsequently, radiation-reaction effects cause substantial deviations from the test particle motion.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of quantum radiation produced by a uniformly accelerating charged particle undergoing thermal random motions, which originates from the coupling to the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. Because the thermal random motions are regarded to result from the Unruh effect, this quantum radiation is termed Unruh radiation. The energy flux of Unruh radiation is negative and smaller than that of Larmor radiation by one order in a/m, where a is the constant acceleration and m is the mass of the particle. Thus, the Unruh radiation appears to be a suppression of the classical Larmor radiation. The quantum interference effect plays an important role in this unique signature. The results is consistent with the predictions of a model consisting of a particle coupled to a massless scalar field as well as those of the previous studies on the quantum effect on the Larmor radiation.

Abstract:Generation of electromagnetic fields by moving charges is a fascinating topic where the tight connection between classical electrodynamics and special relativity becomes particularly apparent. One can gain direct insight into the fascinating structure of such fields by visualizing the electric field lines. However, the calculation of electric field lines for arbitrarily moving charges is far from trivial. Here, we derive an equation for the direction that points from the retarded position of a moving charge towards a specific field line position, which allows for a simple construction of these lines. We analytically solve this equation for several special but important cases: for an arbitrary rectilinear motion, for the motion within the wiggler magnetic field of a free electron laser, and for the motion in a synchrotron.
Angular momentum of radiation from ultrarelativistic charge

Abstract:The angular momentum of radiation from an arbitrarily moving relativistic charge is studied. The angular momentum is presented as the sum of the angular momentum relative to the point where the charge is located at a retarded moment of time and the angular momentum relative to an arbitrary stationary center. In particular, the instantaneous center of curvature of the trajectory is considered as such a center. Explicit expressions for the angular distribution of these components of angular momentum fluxes are obtained and studied. It is shown that the angular momentum of the field relative to the position of the charge is determined only by the properties of the electromagnetic radiation field, and the angular momentum relative to an arbitrarily distant point is the vector product of the displacement of this point and the force corresponding to radiation pressure. It is shown that in the ultrarelativistic limit, the canonical angular momentum of the radiation coincides with the angular momentum following from the symmetrized energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field.

Electromagnetic field quantization in the presence of a moving nano-particle

Abstract:An appropriate Lagrangian is considered for a system comprising a moving nanoparticle in a semi-infinite space, and the electromagnetic and matter fields are quantized. Through an analysis of the absorbed power radiation, it is demonstrated that the quantum friction experienced by high-velocity nanoparticles can be identified as a dissipative term in the radiation power of the nanoparticle. The absorbed power radiation for a moving nanoparticle is derived and compared with that of a static one. By considering two different temperature scenarios, it is explicitly shown that the absorbed power radiation for a moving nanoparticle always contains a negative term in its power spectrum, which can be attributed to the power lost due to non-contact quantum friction.

Abstract:Classical radiation from a single relativistically accelerating electron is investigated where the temperature characterizing the system highlights the dependence on acceleration. In the context of the dynamic Casimir effect with Planck-distributed photons and thermal black hole evaporation, we demonstrate analytic consistency between the ideas of constant acceleration and equilibrium thermal radiation. For ultra-relativistic speeds, we demonstrate a long-lasting constant peel acceleration and constant power emission, which is consistent with the idea of balanced equilibrium of Planck-distributed particle radiation.

On Radiation Reaction in Classical Electrodynamics

Abstract:The Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac equations (LAD) may be the most commonly accepted equation describing the motion of a classical charged particle in its electromagnetic field. However, it is well known that they bare several problems. In particular, almost all solutions are dynamically unstable, and therefore, highly questionable. The question remains whether better equations of motion than LAD can be found to describe the dynamics of charges in the electromagnetic fields. In this paper we present an approach to derive such equations of motions, taking as input the Maxwell equations and a particular charge model only, similar to the model suggested by Dirac in his original derivation of LAD in 1938. We present a candidate for new equations of motion for the case of a single charge. Our approach is motivated by the observation that Dirac's derivation relies on an unjustified application of Stokes' theorem and an equally unjustified Taylor expansion of terms in his evolution equations. For this purpose, Dirac's calculation is repeated using an extended charge model that does allow for the application of Stokes' theorem and enables us to find an explicit equation of motion by adapting Parrott's derivation, thus avoiding a Taylor expansion. The result are second order differential delay equations, which describe the radiation reaction force for the charge model at hand. Their informal Taylor expansion in the radius of the charge model used in the paper reveals again the famous triple dot term of LAD but provokes the mentioned dynamical instability by a mechanism we discuss and, as the derived equations of motion are explicit, is unnecessary.

Quantum radiation pressure on a moving mirror at finite temperature

Abstract:We compute the radiation pressure force on a moving mirror, in the nonrelativistic approximation, assuming the field to be at temperature $T.$ At high temperature, the force has a dissipative component proportional to the mirror velocity, which results from Doppler shift of the reflected thermal photons. In the case of a scalar field, the force has also a dispersive component associated to a mass correction. In the electromagnetic case, the separate contributions to the mass correction from the two polarizations cancel. We also derive explicit results in the low temperature regime, and present numerical results for the general case. As an application, we compute the dissipation and decoherence rates for a mirror in a harmonic potential well.

Abstract:The fundamental solution for the linearized relativistic Vlasov equation with Maxwell's equations is obtained. The unperturbed state is assumed to be spatially homogeneous and time independent, with no electric or magnetic fields. The unperturbed distribution function depends only on the magnitude of relativistic momentum. An examination of the asymptotic behavior of the electric field for large time permits a general description of the solution. The electric field may be expressed as the sum of transverse and longitudinal parts. The transverse part looks like an ordinary electromagnetic wave extremely close to the light cone, and within the light cone it oscillates rapidly with varying frequency and wave number and a local phase velocity greater than the speed of light. Near the origin of the disturbance there is a transition to an ordinary plasma oscillation. In addition to a weak precursor wave, the longitudinal wave propagates outward with a definite speed and behind its wavefront the electric field oscillates with local phase velocity greater than the speed of light. Another ordinary plasma oscillation is left near the origin of the disturbance. The longitudinal speed of propagation goes to zero in the nonrelativistic case and to the speed of light in the extreme relativistic limit. The transverse and longitudinal fields defined according to the Fourier transform modes are not each zero outside the light cone, but their sum is zero. Thus, no signal travels faster than the speed of light. This peculiarity illustrates some unnatural aspects of the separation of a solution into modes of Fourier components.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the signature of the Unruh effect in quantum radiation from an accelerated charged particle interacting with vacuum fluctuations. Because a charged particle in uniformly accelerated motion exhibits thermal random motion around the classical trajectory because of the Unruh effect, its quantum radiation might be termed Unruh radiation. We show that the energy flux of the quantum radiation is negative and that its amplitude is smaller than the classical Larmor radiation by a factor of $a/m$, where $a$ is the acceleration and $m$ is the mass of the particle. The total radiation flux of the classical Larmor radiation and the quantum radiation is positive; therefore, the quantum radiation appears to suppress the total radiation. Interestingly, the results are consistent with the prediction for the quantum correction to classical Larmor radiation, which were obtained using a different approach.

Abstract:A charge accelerating in a straight line following the Schwarzschild-Planck moving mirror motion emits thermal radiation for a finite period. Such a mirror motion demonstrates quantum purity and serves as a direct analogy of a black hole with unitary evolution and complete evaporation. Extending the analog to classical electron motion, we derive the emission spectrum, power radiated, and finite total energy and particle count, with particular attention to the thermal radiation limit. This potentially opens the possibility of a laboratory analog of black hole evaporation.

Abstract:It is pointed out that the coupling of macroscopic test masses to the gravi-dilaton background of string theory is non geodesic, in general, and cannot be parametrized by a Brans-Dicke model of scalar-tensor gravity. The response of gravitational antennas to dilatonic waves should be analyzed through a generalized equation of geodesic deviation, taking into account the possible direct coupling of the background to the (composition-dependent) dilatonic charge of the antenna.

Abstract:Radiation from an accelerating charge is a basic process that can serve as an intersection between classical and quantum physics. We present two exactly soluble electron trajectories that permit analysis of the radiation emitted, exploring its time evolution and spectrum by analogy with the moving mirror model of the dynamic Casimir effect. These classical solutions are finite energy, rectilinear (nonperiodic), asymptotically zero velocity worldlines with corresponding quantum analog beta Bogolyubov coefficients. One of them has an interesting connection to uniform acceleration and Leonardo da Vinci's water pitcher experiment.

Anomalous Luttinger equivalence between temperature and curved spacetime: From black hole's atmosphere to thermal quenches

Abstract:Building on the idea of Tolman and Ehrenfest that heat has weight, Luttinger established a deep connection between gravitational fields and thermal transport. However, this relation does not include anomalous quantum fluctuations that become paramount in strongly curved spacetime. In this work, we revisit the celebrated Tolman-Ehrenfest and Luttinger relations and show how to incorporate the quantum energy scales associated with these fluctuations, captured by gravitational anomalies of quantum field theories. We point out that such anomalous fluctuations naturally occur in the quantum atmosphere of a black hole. Our results reveal that analogous fluctuations are also observable in thermal conductors in flat-space time provided local temperature varies strongly. As a consequence, we establish that the gravitational anomalies manifest themselves naturally in non-linear thermal response of a quantum wire. In addition, we propose a systematic way to identify thermal analogues of black hole's anomalous quantum fluctuations associated to gravitational anomalies. We identify their signatures in propagating energy waves following a thermal quench, as well as in the energy density of heating Floquet states induced by repeated quenches.

Abstract:Studies of the classical theory of charged particles and their radiation initiated by Lorentz and Abraham have attracted our attention over a century. Nevertheless, the correct equation to describe the motion of a point charged particle is still a matter of controversy. And what about a charge "living" inside Flatland, a hypothetical world of two spatial dimensions? What is the equation of motion of a point charge in six dimensions? This book provides a self-contained and systematic introduction to problems of radiation and radiation reaction in classical field theory. Abstract:The trajectories of relativistic particles in an intense electromagnetic field can be described by the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation, where radiation reaction (RR) is accounted for via a self-force, and interparticle fields are often neglected as an approximation. Yet, the inclusion of interparticle fields is necessary to ensure energy-momentum conservation, in particular during coherent emission. We present a simple generalization of the LL equation for many bodies, which includes coherence effects in the self-force. This theory is shown both analytically and numerically to satisfy energy-momentum conservation as expected. By simulating a neutral, relativistic bunch of electrons and positrons ($e^-/e^+$) colliding with a laser pulse, we show that the inclusion of interparticle fields can significantly affect the particle dynamics and the emission spectrum, even though the external field dominates over the interparticle fields.

A scalar photon theory for near-field radiative heat transfer

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional model of radiative heat transfer for which the effect of the electromag- netic field is only from the scalar potential and thereby ignoring the vector potential contribution. This is a valid assumption when the distances between objects are of the order of nanometers. Using Lorenz gauge, the scalar field is quantized with the canonical quantization scheme, giving rise to scalar photons. In the limit as the speed of light approaches infinity, the theory reduces to a pure Coulomb interaction governed by the Poisson equation. The model describes very well parallel plate capacitor physics, where a new length scale related to its capacitance emerges. Shorter than this length scale we see greater radiative heat transfer. This differs markedly from the usual Rytov fluctuational electrodynamics theory in which the enhancement is due to evanescent modes shorter than the thermal wavelengths. Our theory may explain recent experiments where charge fluctuations instead of current fluctuations play a dominant role in radiative heat transfer. Finally, due to the asymmetric electron-bath couplings, thermal rectification effects are also observed and reported.

Abstract:Thermophoresis is the migration of a particle due to a thermal gradient. Here, we theoretically uncover the quantum version of thermophoresis. As a proof of principle, we analytically find a thermophoretic force on a trapped quantum particle having three energy levels in $\Lambda$ configuration. We then consider a model of N sites, each coupled to its first neighbors and subjected to a local bath at a certain temperature, so as to show numerically how quantum thermophoresis behaves with increasing delocalization of the quantum particle. We discuss how negative thermophoresis and the Dufour effect appear in the quantum regime.
