Abstract:For a directed polymer model in random environment, a characterization of the weak disorder phase in terms of the moment of the renormalized partition function has been proved in [S. Junk: Communications in Mathematical Physics 389, 1087-1097 (2022)]. We extend this characterization to a large class of unbounded environments which includes many commonly used distributions.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to characterize the weak - disorder phase in the directed polymer model by moments of the renormalized partition function in a large class of unbounded environments. Specifically, the paper extends previous research results in bounded environments and proposes a condition (Condition 1), which allows for control of the tail behavior of the random potential field \(\omega\), and on this basis, it is proved that for unbounded environments satisfying this condition, when the inverse temperature \(\beta\) is less than a certain critical value \(\beta_c\), the \(L^p\) norm of the renormalized partition function is bounded. This provides a more powerful tool for understanding the weak - disorder phase.
### Background of the Paper
The directed polymer model is a mathematical model that describes the behavior of polymer chains in a random environment. In this model, the path of the polymer chain is affected by the random potential field, resulting in its statistical properties being significantly different from those in a pure environment. According to the different disorder intensities, the model can be divided into a strong - disorder phase and a weak - disorder phase. An important feature of the weak - disorder phase is that the moments of the renormalized partition function have a certain finiteness, which reflects the finiteness of the influence of disorder on the system.
### Main Contributions of the Paper
1. **Proposal of Condition 1**: The paper introduces a new condition (Condition 1), which requires that the behavior of the exponential moment of the random potential field \(\omega\) at large values is controllable. Specifically, for any \(\beta>0\), there exist constants \(\alpha_1 = \alpha_1(\beta)>1\) and \(\theta_1=\theta_1(\beta)>0\) such that for all \(\alpha>\alpha_1\), we have:
\[
\mathbb{E}\left[\exp\left(\beta \omega - \lambda(\beta)\right) \mid \omega > \alpha\right] \leq \theta_1 \exp(-\beta \alpha)
\]
This condition is stronger than the previous finite - exponential - moment assumption but still applies to many common distributions.
2. **Proof of the Main Theorem**: The paper proves that in unbounded environments satisfying condition 1, when the inverse temperature \(\beta < \beta_c\), the \(L^p\) norm of the renormalized partition function is bounded. Specifically, there exists \(p = p(\beta)>1\) such that:
\[
\sup_{N \in \mathbb{N}} \left\| \frac{\mathcal{Z}_N^\beta}{\mathbb{E}[\mathcal{Z}_N^\beta]} \right\|_p < \infty
\]
This result shows that in the weak - disorder phase, the moments of the renormalized partition function have good finiteness, thus providing a theoretical basis for understanding the statistical properties of the system.
### Applications of the Paper
The results of this paper not only extend the scope of application of existing theories but also provide new tools for studying other types of disordered systems. In particular, in the field of biochemistry and medicine, the directed polymer model can be used to describe the disorder effects in processes such as protein folding and DNA replication, so these results have important application values.
### Conclusion
The paper, by introducing a new condition (Condition 1) and proving that in unbounded environments satisfying this condition, the characteristics of the weak - disorder phase can be characterized by moments of the renormalized partition function. This result provides a new perspective for understanding the behavior of disordered systems and lays the foundation for further research.
