Abstract:We prove a low characteristic counterpart to the main result in (Peluse, 2019), establishing power saving bounds for the polynomial Szemerédi theorem for certain families of polynomials. Namely, we show that if $P_1, \dots, P_m \in (\mathbb{F}_p[t])[y]$ satisfy an equidistribution condition, which is a natural variant of the independence condition in (Peluse, 2019) for our context, then there exists $\gamma > 0$ such that for any $q = p^k$ and any $A_0, A_1, \dots, A_m \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$, \begin{align*} \left| \left\{ (x,y) \in \mathbb{F}_q^2 : x \in A_0, x + P_1(y) \in A_1, \dots, x + P_m(y) \in A_m \right\} \right| = q^{-(m-1)} \prod_{i=0}^m{|A_i|} + O_{q \to \infty; P_1, \dots, P_m} \left( |A_0|^{1/2} q^{3/2 - \gamma} \right). \end{align*} In particular, if $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$ contains no pattern $\{x, x + P_1(y), \dots, x + P_m(y)\}$ of cardinality $m+1$, then \begin{align*} |A| \ll_{P_1, \dots, P_m} q^{1 - \gamma/ \left( m + \frac{1}{2} \right)}. \end{align*}

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to establish power - saving bounds for some polynomial families in finite fields with low characteristics in order to prove the polynomial Szemerédi theorem. Specifically, the goal of the paper is to provide results for polynomial patterns in low - characteristic finite fields similar to those already available in large - characteristic finite fields. ### Problem Background 1. **Existing Results**: In high - characteristic finite fields, there have been some studies on polynomial configurations, such as Theorem 1.1 (quoted from [P19]). These results show that under specific conditions, the existence and distribution of polynomial patterns can be well described. 2. **Research Motivation**: However, when the characteristic is low (i.e., when the characteristic \(p\) is fixed), the properties of polynomials change, and in particular, the behavior of high - degree polynomials (degree \(d\geq p\)) is more complex. Therefore, new methods and techniques are required to handle such problems. ### Specific Problems The paper mainly focuses on the following two aspects: 1. **Existence of Polynomial Patterns**: Prove that in a low - characteristic finite field \(F_q\), if polynomials \(P_1,\ldots,P_m\in(F_p[t])[y]\) satisfy a certain uniform distribution condition, then there exists \(\gamma > 0\) such that for any \(q = p^k\) and any subsets \(A_0,A_1,\ldots,A_m\subseteq F_q\), we have: \[ \left|\left\{(x,y)\in F_q^2:x\in A_0,x + P_1(y)\in A_1,\ldots,x + P_m(y)\in A_m\right\}\right| = q^{-(m - 1)}\prod_{i = 0}^m|A_i|+O_{q\rightarrow\infty;P_1,\ldots,P_m}\left(|A_0|^{1/2}q^{3/2-\gamma}\right). \] 2. **Non - Existence of Polynomial Patterns**: In particular, if a set \(A\subseteq F_q\) does not contain any non - trivial pattern of the form \(\{x,x + P_1(y),\ldots,x + P_m(y)\}\), then its size satisfies: \[ |A|\ll_{P_1,\ldots,P_m}q^{1-\frac{\gamma}{\binom{m + 1}{2}}}. \] ### Methods and Techniques To achieve the above goals, the paper introduces the following key techniques: - **Weyl - type Equidistribution Theorem**: Study the distribution behavior of polynomials in low - characteristic finite fields, especially the distribution of high - degree polynomials. - **Joint Ergodicity Criterion**: Connect the ergodic properties of polynomials with combinatorial results through the joint ergodicity criterion (Theorem 1.14) on finite commutative groups. - **New Variant of PET Induction**: Induct based on the derivational degree of polynomials to handle the case of high - degree polynomials. Through these methods, the paper successfully establishes results in low - characteristic finite fields similar to the polynomial Szemerédi theorem in high - characteristic finite fields.
