Abstract:In this article, explicit formulas for finding the determining number and the metric dimension of the zero-divisor graph of Z_n and non-Boolean semisimple rings are given. In the case of Boolean rings, an upper bound of the determining number and the metric dimension of zero-divisor graph is determined. Further, the determining number and the metric dimension of some important graphs other than zero-divisor graphs, are proved and the open problem by Boutin, regarding the determining number of graphs is settled.

Abstract:For a graph and an assignment of black and white colors to its vertices, the zero forcing color-change rule operates as follows: if a vertex u and all of its neighbors except v are black, then v is forced to change its color to black. A proper subset S of V is called a zero forcing set if by initially assigning the black vertices to be the elements of S and repeatedly applying this rule to G , all vertices are eventually forced to change their colors to black. Abstract:We study the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues over a collection of matrices associated with a graph. Lower bounds are derived based on the existence or non-existence of certain cycle(s) in a graph. A key result proves that every Johnson graph has a signed variant with exactly two distinct eigenvalues. We also explore applications to weighing matrices, linear ternary codes, tight frames, and compute the minimum rank of Johnson graphs. Further results involve the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues for graphs in association schemes, distance-regular graphs, and Hamming graphs. We also draw some connections with simplicial complexes and higher-order Laplacians.

Bounds on zero forcing using (upper) total domination and minimum degree

Abstract:While a number of bounds are known on the zero forcing number $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$ expressed in terms of the order of a graph and maximum or minimum degree, we present two bounds that are related to the (upper) total domination number $\gamma_t(G)$ (resp. $\Gamma_t(G)$) of $G$. We prove that $Z(G)+\gamma_t(G)\le n(G)$ and $Z(G)+\frac{\Gamma_t(G)}{2}\le n(G)$ holds for any graph $G$ with no isolated vertices of order $n(G)$. Both bounds are sharp as demonstrated by several infinite families of graphs. In particular, we show that every graph $H$ is an induced subgraph of a graph $G$ with $Z(G)+\frac{\Gamma_t(G)}{2}=n(G)$. Furthermore, we prove a characterization of graphs with power domination equal to $1$, from which we derive a characterization of the extremal graphs attaining the trivial lower bound $Z(G)\ge \delta(G)$. The class of graphs that appears in the corresponding characterizations is obtained by extending an idea from [D.D.~Row, A technique for computing the zero forcing number of a graph with a cut-vertex, Linear Alg.\ Appl.\ 436 (2012) 4423--4432], where the graphs with zero forcing number equal to $2$ were characterized.

Exploring the Influence of Graph Operations on Zero Forcing Sets

Abstract:Zero forcing in graphs is a coloring process where a colored vertex can force its unique uncolored neighbor to be colored. A zero forcing set is a set of initially colored vertices capable of eventually coloring all vertices of the graph. In this paper, we focus on the numbers $z(G; i)$, which is the number of zero forcing sets of size $i$ of the graph $G$. These numbers were initially studied by Boyer et al. where they conjectured that for any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, $z(G; i) \leq z(P_n; i)$ for all $i \geq 1$ where $P_n$ is the path graph on $n$ vertices. The main aim of this paper is to show that several classes of graphs, including outerplanar graphs and threshold graphs, satisfy this conjecture. We do this by studying various graph operations and examining how they affect the number of zero forcing sets.

Abstract:The concept of zero forcing involves a dynamic coloring process by which blue vertices cause white vertices to become blue, with the goal of forcing the entire graph blue while choosing as few as possible vertices to be initially blue. Past research in this area has focused on structural arguments, with approaches varying from graph substructures to the interplay between local and global graph structures. This paper explores the use of these structural concepts when determining the zero forcing number of complex classes of graphs, specifically two infinite classes of graphs each defined on multiple parameters.

Abstract:VC-dimension and VC-density are measures of combinatorial complexity of set systems. VC-dimension was first introduced in the context of statistical learning theory, and is tightly related to the sample complexity in PAC learning. VC-density is a refinement of VC-dimension. Both notions are also studied in model theory, in the context of \emph{dependent} theories. A set system that is definable by a formula of first-order logic with parameters has finite VC-dimension if and only if the formula is a dependent formula. In this paper we study the VC-dimension and the VC-density of the edge relation $Exy$ on Johnson graphs and on Hamming graphs. On a graph $G$, the set system defined by the formula $Exy$ is the vertex set of $G$ along with the collection of all \emph{open neighbourhoods} of $G$. We show that the edge relation has VC-dimension at most $4$ on Johnson graphs and at most $3$ on Hamming graphs and these bounds are optimal. We furthermore show that the VC-density of the edge relation on the class of all Johnson graphs is $2$, and on the class of all Hamming graphs the VC-density is $2$ as well. Moreover, we show that our bounds on the VC-dimension carry over to the class of all induced subgraphs of Johnson graphs, and to the class of all induced subgraphs of Hamming graphs, respectively. It also follows that the VC-dimension of the set systems of \emph{closed neighbourhoods} in Johnson graphs and Hamming graphs is bounded. Johnson graphs and Hamming graphs are well known examples of distance transitive graphs. Neither of these graph classes is nowhere dense nor is there a bound on their (local) clique-width. Our results contrast this by giving evidence of structural tameness of the graph classes.

Zero Forcing and Vertex Independence Number on Cubic and Subcubic Graphs

Abstract:Motivated by a conjecture from the automated conjecturing program TxGraffiti, in this paper the relationship between the zero forcing number, $Z(G)$, and the vertex independence number, $\alpha(G)$, of cubic and subcubic graphs is explored. TxGraffiti conjectures that for all connected cubic graphs $G$, that are not $K_4$, $Z(G) \leq \alpha(G) + 1$. This work uses decycling partitions of upper-embeddable graphs to show that almost all cubic graphs satisfy $Z(G) \leq \alpha(G) + 2$, provides an infinite family of cubic graphs where $Z(G) = \alpha(G) + 1$, and extends known bounds to subcubic graphs.

Abstract:Given a simple, finite graph with vertex set V ( G ), we define a zero forcing set of G as follows. Choose and color all vertices of S blue and all vertices in white. The color change rule is if w is the only white neighbor of blue vertex v , then we change the color of w from white to blue. If after applying the color change rule as many times as possible eventually every vertex of G is blue, we call S a zero forcing set of G . Z ( G ) denotes the minimum cardinality of a zero forcing set. We show that if G is 2-edge-connected, claw-free, and cubic, then . We also study a similar graph invariant known as the loop zero forcing number of a graph G which happens to be the dual invariant to the Grundy domination number of G . Specifically, we study the loop zero forcing number in two particular types of planar graphs.

Abstract:This article investigates multiset dimensions in zero divisor graphs (ZD-graphs) associated with rings. Through rigorous analysis, we establish general bounds for the multiset dimension (Mdim) in ZD-graphs, exploring various commutative rings including the ring Z_n of integers modulo n, Gaussian integers and quotient polynomial rings. Additionally, we examine the behavior of Mdim under algebraic operations and discuss bounds in terms of diameter and maximum degree. This study enhances our understanding of algebraic structures and their graphical representations.

Abstract:The zero forcing number is the minimum number of black vertices that can turn a white graph black following a single neighbour colour forcing rule. The zero forcing number provides topological information about linear algebra on graphs, with applications to the controllability of linear dynamical systems and quantum walks on graphs among other problems. Here, I investigate the zero forcing number of undirected simple graphs with a power law degree distribution $p_k\sim k^{-\gamma}$. For graphs generated by the preferential attachment model, with a diameter scaling logarithmically with the graph size, the zero forcing number approaches the graph size when $\gamma\rightarrow2$. In contrast, for graphs generated by the deactivation model, with a diameter scaling linearly with the graph size, the zero forcing number is smaller than the graph size independently of $\gamma$. Therefore the scaling of the graph diameter with the graph size is another factor determining the controllability of dynamical systems.

Abstract:<p>The concept of zero forcing is extended from graphs to uniform hypergraphs in analogy with the way zero forcing was defined as an upper bound for the maximum nullity of the family of symmetric matrices whose nonzero pattern of entries is described by a given graph: A family of symmetric hypermatrices is associated with a uniform hypergraph and zeros are forced in a null vector. The value of the hypergraph zero forcing number and maximum nullity are determined for various families of uniform hypergraphs and the effects of several graph operations on the hypergraph zero forcing number are determined. The hypergraph zero forcing number is compared to the infection number of a hypergraph and the iteration process in hypergraph power domination.</p>

Abstract:This article investigates the concept of dominant metric dimensions in zero divisor graphs (ZD-graphs) associated with rings. Consider a finite commutative ring with unity, denoted as R, where nonzero elements x and y are identified as zero divisors if their product results in zero (x.y=0). The set of zero divisors in ring R is referred to as L(R). To analyze various algebraic properties of R, a graph known as the zero-divisor graph is constructed using L(R). This manuscript establishes specific general bounds for the dominant metric dimension (Ddim) concerning the ZD-graph of R. To achieve this objective, we examine the zero divisor graphs for specific rings, such as the ring of Gaussian integers modulo m, denoted as Zm[i], the ring of integers modulo n, denoted as Zn, and some quotient polynomial rings. Our research unveils new insights into the structural similarities and differences among commutative rings sharing identical metric dimensions and dominant metric dimensions. Additionally, we present a general result outlining bounds for the dominant metric dimension expressed in terms of the maximum degree, girth, clique number, and diameter of the associated ZD-graphs. Through this exploration, we aim to provide a comprehensive framework for analyzing commutative rings and their associated zero divisor graphs, thereby advancing both theoretical knowledge and practical applications in diverse domains.

Abstract:In this paper the recently introduced concept of equidistant dimension $eqdim(G)$ of graph $G$ is considered. Useful property of distance-equalizer set of arbitrary graph $G$ has been established. For Johnson graphs $J_{n,2}$ and Kneser graphs $K_{n,2}$ exact values for $eqdim(J_{n,2})$ and $eqdim(K_{n,2})$ have been derived, while for Johnson graphs $J_{n,3}$ it is proved that $eqdim(J_{n,3}) \le n-2$. Finally, exact value of $eqdim(J_{2k,k})$ for odd $k$ has been presented.
